She attended the country schools in the area of the family farm and often recalled riding her Pinto pony as a youngster while playing with Indian children from the Fox and Sac Reservation whose families fished and hunted the Iowa River Valley. she was a self described rough and tumble ³tomboy.² Helen married Herman Gustav Gadow of Maynard, Iowa on June 8, 1917 at the Polk County Courthouse in Des Moines, Iowa, which she described as ³The most grand and opulent building she had ever been in.² Their honeymoon was the train ride back to Victor, Iowa. Herman, at the time, was a member of the Iowa National Guard. His unit had frequently trained for possible maneuvers along the Mexican border. It was during these exercises, in Iowa County, that he met Helen and asked for her hand. After returning to Victor for a brief time they traveled to Westgate, Iowa where Herman was employed on a nearby farm. Eventually they purchased their own land and farmed until the mid 1930ıs In later years Herman engaged in buying and selling livestock in Northeast Iowa and Helen, for several years worked as a medical assistant to Dr. Hall, but her top priorities were always her expended family of eight children.
