Golda Irene Kirk
Golda Irene Kirk, 84, Clear Lake, Iowa, died Sunday,
June 21, 1998 at the Ebenezer Ridges Care Center in
Burnsville, Minn.
Funeral services were held Thursday, June 25 at
the Agape Christian Family Church in Clear Lake,
with the Pastor David Toyne officiating. Interment
was in the Lincoln Township Cemetery, rural Fertile,
Iowa.
The family suggests memorials be made to the
Golda I. Kirk Memorial Fund.
Golda was born Dec. 21, 1913 in Teopa, Minn., the
daughter of Samuel and Winnifred (Ebaugh) Severson.
Golda attended school in Fertile, and then attended
Iowa State Teachers College, Cedar Falls, Iowa. She
taught country school in Grant Township School,
rural Fertile.
On May 24, 1936 she was united in marriage to
Horace Kirk at the Church of Christ in Fertile,
Iowa. They farmed in the Fertile area until 1956
when they moved to Wisconsin. In 1959 they moved to
Clear Lake.
Golda enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening,
traveling and church activities.
She is survived by one daughter, Patricia Turner
of Omaha, Neb.; two sons, James Kirk and his wife,
Linda, Lakeville, Minn., and Sam Kirk and his wife,
Linda of Atlanta, Ga.; one sister, Nelda Halverson,
Clear Lake; six grandchildren, Randall Turner and
his wife, Sandy, Portland, Ore., Rodrick Turner and
his wife, Katie, Memphis, Tenn., Roberta Turner,
Omaha, Neb., Chris Kirk and his wife, Augusta,
Crystal, Minn., Kristen Kirk, Atlanta, Ga., and Kari
Kirk, Lakeville, Minn.; one great-grandchild, Derick
Turner, Memphis.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her
husband; a brother, Glen Severson; and a sister,
Cora Ouverson.
John B. Wallace
John B. Wallace, 78, of Mason City, Iowa,
formerly of Burchinal, Iowa, died Thursday, June 25,
1998, at home after a long illness.
Inurnment will take place at a later date in
Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City. Open memorials
may be sent to the house. Ward-Van Slyke Colonial
Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
John was born Dec. 30, 1919 to Albert and Mary
Wallace in Mason City. John served in military
active duty during World War II overseas, with the
11th airborne from Fort Rose Crantz, Calif. He
worked for Northwestern States Portland Cement
Company until retiring in 1983 after 31 years. He
took pride in many years of service work for less
fortunate people through Salvation Army, and private
projects for Elders in South Dakota. His greatest
joy in life was visits with his family and
grandchildren, and his new great-grandson. John
spent his last days being cared for at home after a
nine year illness.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Wallace,
Mason City; three daughters, Patricia Abele and her
husband, John, Klemme, Iowa, Priscilla Wallace, and
Richard Maise, Margaret Bagur of Mason City; five
grandchildren, Angela O’Donnell, and her husband,
Shawn of Thornton, Iowa, Bobbi Mary, and Joseph
Mary, of Klemme, Heather Siesseger, and Michael K.
Bagur, of Mason City; and one great-grandson, Hunter
Allen O’Donnell, Thornton, Iowa; a brother, Pat
Wallace and his wife, Dixie, Mason City; two
sisters-in-law, Marlene Wallace, and Joyce Wallace,
both of Mason City; and special friends, Chuck and
Michelle Dunn, Danny O’Donnell and Brenda Gatton.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and
brothers, William, James and Robert.
Glen J. Amosson
Glen J. Amosson, 88, of Clear Lake, died at his
home, Monday, June 29, 1998.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 2,
at 11 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, with
the Rev. Kermit Roisen and Rev. Dean Hess
officiating. Interment will be in the Clear Lake
Cemetery. Visitation will be at Ward-Van Slyke
Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, today (Wednesday), July
1, from 3 to 7 p.m. and one hour prior to the
service at the church. Memorials may be made to the
Clear Lake Senior Citizens or Opportunity Village.
Glen was born April 12, 1910 at Renwick, Iowa,
the son of Amos and Julia (Jurgenson) Amosson. He
married Agnes Ulstad Jan. 14, 1933 in Sioux City,
Neb. They moved south of Clear Lake where they
farmed. Glen and Agnes moved into their present home
in Clear Lake in 1975, but continued to help his
sons on the farm.
He enjoyed going down to the Senior Citizens
Center to play cards, shooting pool, and fishing
with his boys. Time spent with his family was very
important to Glen.
Glen was a former member of the FHA board, Zion
Lutheran Board of Trustees, Burchinal Elevator Co-op
Board, (25 years), Mt. Vernon Township Trustee,
Farmer’s Co-op Gas and Oil Board, Mason City, Iowa,
Clear Lake Senior Citizens (Board Past President),
and past Farm Bureau president.
He is survived by his wife, Agnes Amosson, Clear
Lake; three sons, Roger Amosson and his wife,
Barbara, Clear Lake, Ron Amosson and his wife,
Susan, West Des Moines, Iowa, Bob Amosson and his
wife, Patricia, Rockwell, Iowa; one brother, Orville
Amosson and his wife, Ann, of Ottumwa, Iowa; one
sister Rozella Anderson and her husband, Clifford,
of Colorado Springs, Colo.; six grandchildren, Vicky
Bertz, Susan Finnegan and her husband, Mike, Amy
Pierce and her husband, Jeff, Scott Amosson and his
wife, Vonnie, Jeremy Amosson and Aaron Amosson;
eight great-grandchildren, Jenny Bertz, Sarah Bertz,
Chris Finnegan, Patrick Finnegan, Nicholas Pierce,
Meg Pierce, Whitney Dye and Colby Dye.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two
sisters, Gladys Jotten and Bertha Hansen; and six
brothers, Sam Amosson, Eddy Amosson, Harold Amosson,
Duane Amosson, Donald Amosson and Richard Amosson.
Laura M. Daleske
Laura M. Daleske, 64, of Renton, Wash., formerly
of Clear Lake, died Monday, June 22, 1998, at the
Renton Hills Care Center, Renton, of cancer.
Inurnment service will be held in early
September. Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear
Lake, is in charge of services.
Laura was born in Renton, and moved to the Clear
Lake area in 1966. She married Merle H. Daleske on
June 11, 1954, at Eglin Airforce Base, Fla.
Following Merle’s death Sept. 1, 1984, Laura
returned to Renton.
She is survived by five sons, Donald Daleske, and
his wife, Becky, Ft. Morgan, Colo., Michael Daleske,
and his wife, Josie, Granite Falls, Wash., Gary
Daleske, Renton, Robert Daleske and his wife, Sarah,
Evansdale, Iowa, J. James Daleske, Renton; one
daughter, Carole Lindecrantz and her husband, Carl,
Waterloo, Iowa; three grandchildren, Robert D.
Daleske, Christopher P. Daleske, and Casey J.
Lindecrantz.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her
husband; and one infant.

Vivian Lenora Nelson
Vivian Lenora Nelson, 88, formerly of Clear Lake,
died Thursday, July 2, 1998 at the Ft. Madison
Community Hospital, Ft. Madison, Iowa.
Funeral services were held Monday, July 6, at the
First Congregational Church, Clear Lake, with the
Rev. Thomas Healey officiating. Interment was at the
Ventura Cemetery, Ventura. Memorials may be made to
the Vivian Nelson Memorial Fund.
Vivian was born Dec. 15, 1909, the daughter of
John and Mabel (Ogden) Norris at Galt, Iowa. She
attended Clarion High School, graduating in 1927.
She married Rasmus Nelson March 6, 1932 in Clear
Lake. After they were married, they lived near
Ventura on a rented farm until they purchased a farm
near Clear Lake in 1936 Vivian moved to Ft. Madison
in March, 1996.
Vivian was a 70 year member of the Rebekah’s. She
joined Lena Rebekah Lodge No. 279, Galt, Iowa, in
March, 1928; transferred to Tina Rebekah Lodge No.
105, Clear Lake; President Rebekah Assembly of Iowa,
1950-51, President Department Association Ladies
Auxiliary Patriarchs Militant, 1959-60; Rebekah
Assembly Secretary, 20 years and received Secretary
Emeritus; President, International Association of
Rebekah Assembly Secretaries, 1983-84; Member,
Pioneer Auxiliary L.A.P.M. No. 3, Des Moines;
Member, First Congregational Church, Clear Lake. Her
favorite pastimes included crafts, knitting and
crocheting.
She is survived by her daughter, Norma L. Miller
and her husband, Larry, Ft. Madison, Iowa;
granddaughters, Cristi Prenger and her husband,
James, Quincy, Ill., and Stephanie Miller, Ft.
Madison; and great-grandsons, Matthew Prenger and
Jeffrey Prenger.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her
husband; and one brother.
Lyle William Hepperly
Lyle William Hepperly, 77, of Mason City, Iowa,
died Sunday, July 5, 1998, at North Iowa Mercy
Health Center East Campus.
A memorial service will be held today
(Wednesday), July 8, at Hogan Bremer Colonial
Chapel, 126 3rd St. NE, Mason City, with the Rev.
Thomas McAndrew officiating. The body was cremated.
Inurnment will take place prior to the service at
9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Evergreen Cemetery, Britt,
Iowa.
Lyle William Hepperly was born May 14, 1921 in
Britt, the son of George W. and Mary Eda (Yarke)
Hepperly. He married Lucille Katherine Hanig on Nov.
18, 1940 in Wesley, Iowa.
Lyle grew up in Britt. He then lived in the Clear
Lake and Britt area until moving to Mason City in
1962. Lyle farmed and also worked over 30 years at
Northwestern Portland Cement retiring in 1984.
He loved to play poker and cribbage. He went to
many rummage sales and especially enjoyed spending
time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by three sons, Gary Hepperly and
his wife, Dorothy, Duane Hepperly and his wife,
Sandy, and Ronald Hepperly, all Mason City; one
sister, Lola Mattoon, Fremont, Ohio; one brother,
Louis Hepperly, Clear Lake; eight grandchildren; six
great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Ila Fish,
Riverview, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his
wife; one brother, Ernest Hepperly; two sisters,
Stella Clark and Marietta Cockrell.
Robert Lee
Hanley
Robert Lee Hanley, 85, died Wednesday, July 1,
1998, in Superior, Wash.
Funeral services were held Monday, July 6, at
Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with the
Rev. Thomas Healey of the First Congregational
Church, Clear Lake, officiating. Interment will be
at the Clear Lake Cemetery. Memorials may be given
to the Robert L. Hanley Memorial. Ward-Van Slyke
Colonial Chapels were in charge of arrangements.
Robert was born Marcy 19, 1913 in Hamburg, Iowa.
His parents were James Albert and Poca (Vanderpool)
Hanley. He married Addie Miller on Jan. 5, 1936 at
the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa.
Robert worked several years at different
implement dealers, including Debryne & Pugh, and
then went to work for Northern Natural Gas in
Ventura. He was transferred to Belmont and
Dickeyville, Wis. in 1961. Robert and Addie moved to
Superior, Wis. in 1974 and resided there until his
death.
Robert worked at the Surf Ballroom in the 1940s
and early 50s. He also liked to fish. Robert was a
former member of the Clear Lake Methodist Church and
a member of the Itasca Presbyterian Church in
Superior, Wis.
He is survived by his daughters, Shirley Zinn,
Superior, Wis., and Karen Schultz and her husband,
Gerald, South Range, Wis.; grandchildren, Yvette
Talarico and her husband, Darryn, Superior, Wis.,
Stuart Schultz, South Range, Wis., and Royal
Bonjour, Superior, Wis.; great-grandchildren, Kyle
Talarico, Kesondra Talarico, Superior, Wis.; one
sister, Elizabeth Thurtle, Clear Lake; several
in-laws; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his
wife, Addie in 1993; and his brothers, Guy Hanley,
Leonard Hanley, Richard Hanley and James Hanley.

| Howard D. Hofbauer
Mr. Howard D. Hofbauer, 75, of Ventura, Iowa,
died Wednesday, July 8, 1998 at the North Iowa Mercy
Health Center East Campus, Mason City, Iowa.
Funeral services were held Saturday, July 11, at
the Ventura United Methodist Church, Ventura, with
the Rev. Paul Hasel and Rev. David Gobeli
officiating. Graveside services were held at
Graceland Cemetery, Buffalo Center, Iowa. The family
suggests memorials to the Howard D. Hofbauer
Memorial Fund. Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear
Lake, was in charge.
Howard was born Dec. 27, 1922 in Buffalo Center,
Iowa, the son of Jacob and Jane (Jannsen) Hofbauer.
He attended Buffalo Center School. Howard worked for
his father on the family farm. Howard married Ora
Anderson Aug. 17, 1942 in Bethany, Mo.
Howard served in the Army during World War II.
Following the service he moved back to Buffalo
Center where he worked for the Buffalo Center Co-op.
In 1961 the couple moved to Dike, Iowa where he
worked for Farmers Elevator. Later that year they
moved to Ventura where he worked for Land O Lakes in
the warehouse and as a trucker until his retirement
in 1985.
Howard enjoyed caneing chairs, playing cards and
was known for telling jokes. He was a kind, loving
husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed his
church family, where he was very active. He was a
member of Ventura United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Ora Hofbauer,
Ventura; two daughters, Sandra Heerkes and her
husband, Vern, Dike, Iowa and Mary Beth Brown and
her husband, Bill, Elkridge, Md.; five
grandchildren, Christopher Heerkes and his wife,
Rhonda, Dike, Michael Heerkes and his wife, Karen,
Dike, Robert Heerkes, Waucoma, Iowa, Bethany Anne
Heerkes, Dike, and Tammy Plassman and her husband,
Chris, Sykesville, Md.; four great-grandchildren,
Krue Heerkes, Karson Heerkes, Bailey Heerkes and
Noah Heerkes; three brothers, Henry Hofbauer,
Buffalo Center, Jack Hofbauer and his wife, Dorothy,
Lake Havasu City, Ariz., and Don Hofbauer and his
wife, Darlene, Leland, Iowa; three sisters, Ruth
Harris, Yuma, Ariz., Billie Weaver, Buffalo Center,
and Marjorie Roths and her husband, Tom, Garner,
Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two
brothers, George and Harvey; and four sisters,
Goldie, Florence, Caroline and Bertha.
Alice A. Borton
Mrs. Alice A. Borton, 86, formerly of Clear Lake,
died Wednesday, July 8, 1998 at Good Shepherd Care
Center, Mason City, Iowa.
Funeral services were held Monday, July 13, at
the United Methodist Church, Clear Lake, with the
Rev. Kathy Graves officiating, the chaplain of
Hospice of North Iowa. Interment was in Clear Lake
Cemetery. The family suggests memorials to Hospice
of North Iowa. Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear
Lake, was in charge. Alice was born Sept. 30,
1911 in rural Ventura, the daughter of John C. and
Maude (Thomas) Grell. She graduated from Ventura
High School in 1929 as class valedictorian.
Alice worked in the community following school.
She married Miles C. Borton June 26, 1934 in Garner,
Iowa. They farmed in the Ventura and Clear Lake
area. She had lived her entire life in the Ventura
and Clear Lake area.
Alice was the manager of Clear Lake Rexall Drug
under the ownership of A.E. Peterson. She enjoyed
reading, being a creative cook, living on the farm
and most of all her husband, Miles, and her children
and grandchildren.
Alice was a member of United Methodist Church,
Clear Lake, and was active with her church circle;
the Sing and Sew Club, the Rural Lakettes Club and
the Golden Wedding Jubilee Club of North Iowa.
She is survived by a son, Ronald M. Borton,
LaPorte, City, Iowa; and one daughter, Nadine E.
Paullus and her husband, Fred J., Mason City, Iowa;
four grandchildren, Nancy Bathen and her husband,
Richard, LaPorte City, Boyd Borton and his wife,
Julie, Waterloo, Iowa, Isaac Borton, Anamosa, Iowa,
and Molly Paullus, Iowa City, Iowa; two
great-grandchildren, Melissa and Zachary Bathen,
LaPorte City; four sisters, Nettie Zook, Clear Lake,
Ruby Barlow, Clear Lake, Mildred Caffrey, McIntire,
Iowa, and Corie Spurrier of Garden City, Calif.; and
a daughter-in-law, Karen Borton.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband
in 1987; and two brothers, Walter and Carl Grell.
Helen Louise
Hermann
Helen Louise Hermann, 89, of Clear Lake, died
Friday, July 10, 1998, at the Muse-Norris Hospice
In-Patient Unit, Mason City.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 14, at
St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Des Moines, with the
Monsignor Joseph Slepicka and the Rev. Remigius
Okere as co-celebrants. Burial was in the Sunset
Memorial Gardens, Des Moines.
Memorial contributions may be given to Hospice of
North Iowa, 232 2nd St. S.E., Mason City, or St.
Patrick’s Catholic Church, Clear Lake.
Helen was born at Ft. Dodge, Iowa. She spent most
of her life in Des Moines, and moved to Clear Lake
in 1979. She was a file clerk for the State of Iowa
Department of Revenue.
Helen was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic
Church, Clear Lake, and a member of the St.
Patrick’s Daily Mass Group in which she was a
founder and charter member.
She is survived by a daughter, Faith Mary Shaw of
Des Moines; four sons, Franz Hermann and Rolla
Hermann, both of Des Moines, Dennis Hermann of
Arlington, Texas, and Jack Hermann of Chula Vista,
Calif.; 19 grandchildren; and 13
great-grandchildren.

Mortensen
Mrs. Donna Marie Mortensen, 53, of Clear Lake,
died Thursday, July 16, 1998 at the Muse-Norris
Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa.
Funeral services were held Saturday, July 18, at
the United Methodist Church, Clear Lake, with the
Rev. Fred Lewis officiating. Interment was in the
Clear Lake Cemetery. The family suggests memorials
to Hospice of North Iowa.
Donna was born in Winnebago, Minn., the daughter
of Raymond E. and Lillian Esther (Toppin) Doolittle.
The family moved to Clear Lake in 1958. She
graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1962 and
then continued her education at LaJames College of
Hairstyling and Cosmetology, Mason City.
Donna married Ken Mortensen on Sept. 20, 1964 at
the United Methodist Church, Clear Lake. She worked
for her aunt, Ruth Toppin in the Beauty Shop. In
1983 she started her own business of painting and
wall papering with the help of her good friend Kathy
Hinrichs.
Donna enjoyed her cats, traveling, playing
marbles and most of all her grandchildren. She was a
member of the United Methodist Church, Clear Lake.
She is survived by her husband, Ken Mortensen,
Clear Lake; her mother, Esther Doolittle, Clear
Lake; one daughter, Shelley Cobb and her husband,
Fred, Riverside, Iowa; and one son, David Mortensen
and his wife, Joy, Coralville, Iowa; two grandsons,
Hunter and Tucker Cobb; five sisters, Kathryn Clark,
Yakima, Wash., Mary Helen Hopkins, Fresno, Calif.,
Ruth Cordes, Grove City, Minn., Karen Curry, St.
James, Minn., and Judy Watson, Clear Lake; two
brothers, Earl Doolittle, Fairmont, Minn., and
Richard Doolittle, Pensacola, Fla.
She was preceded in death by her father; and
an infant daughter, Nancy.
Joseph Frank Weiner
Joseph Frank Weiner, 48, died Monday, July 13,
1998 at his home, Executive Cottage at Opportunity
Village, Clear Lake.
A funeral Mass was held Thursday, July 16 at Holy
Name Catholic Church, Rockford, with the Rev. Roger
Katz and Monsignor Joseph J. Slepicka officiating.
Burial was in Riverside Cemetery, Rockford.
Joseph Frank Weiner was born June 8, 1950, in
Charles City, son of Frank J. and Ann (Cooling)
Weiner. Joe attended school in Floyd and then was
the first resident at Comprehensive Systems in
Charles City.
In 1974, he moved to Opportunity Village, Clear
Lake, where he was presently serving as mayor of the
village. Joe loved spending time with his family and
he enjoyed being involved in the family business at
Cartersville Elevator. Joe also enjoyed traveling
and spending time with his many friends.
He is survived by his parents, Frank and Ann
Weiner, Nora Springs; two sisters, Janet Hanig and
her husband, Frank, Cartersville, Barb Rooney and
her husband, Larry, Rockford; three brothers, Gary
Weiner and his `wife Sheryl, Cartersville, Dick
Weiner and his wife, Barb, Nora Springs, and Steve
Weiner and his wife, Jill, Portland; two
grandmothers, Kathryn Weiner, Rockwell, and Aileen
Cooling, Mason City; 19 nieces and nephews; several
aunts, uncles, and cousins; and his special family
at Opportunity Village.
He was preceded in death by his grandfathers,
Frank Weiner Sr., and Francis Cooling; one nephew,
Adam Hanig; and one sister-in-law, Judene Weiner.
Melvin L. Larsen
Mr. Melvin L. Larsen, 84, Clear Lake, formerly of
Brandon, Iowa, recently passed away.
Funeral services were held Monday, 20, at the
Brandon United Methodist Church, Brandon, with the
Rev. Chad Lierman officiating. Inurnment was in the
Brandon Cemetery. The family suggests memorials to
the Brandon United Methodist Church.
Melvin was born May 25, 1914 in Jesup, Iowa, the
son of Martin and Alvina (Sorensen) Larsen. He
graduated from Jesup High School. Melvin worked at
the grain elevator in Jesup before entering the Army
in 1944, where he was stationed in Northern France
until his discharge in 1946. Following his discharge
returned to the elevator. They moved to Brandon
where they owned and operated a grocery store, until
he became Postmaster of Branon in 1952 and later
transferred to Rural Letter Carrier in 1958. He
retired in 1979.
Melvin married Beulah Kizer on Aug. 26, 1937 in
Brandon.
Melvin was a member of Brandon United Methodist
Church, Brandon Methodist Men, National Rural Letter
Carriers Ass., American Legion Post #342 and Brandon
Alumni.
He is survived by his son, Martin J. Larsen and
his wife, Kathy, Clear Lake; one grandson, Jeremy
Larsen, Cedar Falls, Iowa; two step-grandchildren,
Jamie Weaver and his wife, Kelly, Aurora, Ill., and
Jolene Weaver, Des Moines; three
step-great-grandchildren, Gina, Amanda and Declan.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife in
1991; and three sisters, Alice, Lydia and Florence.
Jane Reese Schultz
Jane Reese Schultz, 76, of St. Joseph, Mo., died
Wednesday, July 15, 1998 at Hope House in St.
Joseph.
Memorial services were held Saturday, July 18, at
Christ Episcopal Church in St. Joseph. The body was
cremated.
Jane Reese was born July 12, 1922 in Columbia,
Mo. On Sept. 1, 1945 she married Alfred "Dutch"
Schultz in Columbia, and they moved to Clear Lake in
1946. While living in Clear Lake, she was involved
in the Twentieth Century Club, St Andrew’s and St.
John’s Episcopal Churches in Clear Lake and Mason
City, the Clear Lake Arts Council, and the MacNider
Museum. Mrs. Schultz’s contributions to the arts and
humane treatment of animals will be remembered by
family and friends. Mr. and Mrs. Schultz moved to
St. Joseph in 1996.
Jane was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, the
Oak Grove Homemakers Club, Pi Beta Phi Alumnae
Association, and the Runcie Club, all of St. Joseph.
She is survived by two daughters, Amy Grier of
St. Joseph, and Sara Nelson of Green Bay, Wis.; a
son, Fred Schultz, Green Bay; and nine
grandchildren, Sara, Beth, Becky and Fred Grier of
St. Joseph, Amie, Jacquie and Steve Nelson and Molly
Schultz of Green Bay, and Chuck W. Schultz of
Durango.
She was preceded in death by her son, Steve
Schultz; and her parents, Anna and Herbert Reese.
Clifford "Bill"
Thomas
Clifford "Bill" Thomas, 81, of Clear Lake, died
Monday, July 20, 1998.
Memorial services will be held today (Wednesday),
July 22, at 11 a.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in
Clear Lake with the Rev. Kermit Roisen officiating.
Music will be provided by organist, Joyce TenHaken.
Eulogist will be Dan Thomas. Burial will be at a
later date in Clear Lake Cemetery. His body was
donated to the University of Iowa Department of
Anatomy for medical research.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to
services at the church. Memorials may be directed to
Zion Lutheran Church, Opportunity Village or the
Concord Care Center, Garner. Cataldo Funeral Home
was in charge of arrangements.
Clifford James Thomas, the son of William G. and
Mary Winifred (Simmons) Thomas, was born Oct. 1916
on a farm near Homestead, Iowa. He graduated from
Marengo High School in 1935. On Feb. 16, 1945 he was
married to Betty Lorraine Spilman at Clear Lake. He
worked as a printer for small maintenance
departments for Northern Natural Gas in Ventura for
22 years before retiring in 1975.
He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Clear
Lake.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Thomas, Clear
Lake; two sons, Dan Thomas and his wife, Jennie, of
Hastings, Minn., and Jim Thomas of Evansville, Ind.;
two grandchildren, Lori and Joel Thomas of Hastings,
Minn.; a brother, Melvin Thomas, and his wife,
Eulalia "Stevie", of Evergreen, Colo.; three
sisters-in-law, Francis Thomas, Fresno, Calif., Mary
Hotz of Belleville, Ill., and Ruth Ann Thomas of
Fresno; and 23 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and
brothers and sisters, Roy Thomas and wife, Maxine,
Ralph Thomas and wife, Myrtie, Charles Thomas, Glenn
Thomas and wife, Mary, Richard Thomas, Robert
Thomas, Elizabeth Thomas, Marianne Heineman and
husband, Charles, and an infant brother, Allen
Thomes.

Lee Friedrichs
Lee Friedrichs, 70, of Clear Lake, Iowa, died
Saturday, July 25, 1998 at his home.
A funeral Mass was held Tuesday, July 28 at St.
Patrick’s Catholic Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev.
Dennis Cahill officiating. Interment followed at the
Clear Lake Cemetery with full military honors
conducted by the Clear Lake VFW.
Lee was born Sept. 17, 1927 in Butler County to
Carl and Hattie (Abben) Friedrichs. The family later
moved to rural Floyd County where Lee attended the
Marble Rock Consolidated School. After graduation he
enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in the Pacific
Theater during the latter period of World War II. He
was a continuous member of the VFW Post 4868 in
Clear Lake for 35 years and served as Quarter master
for a number of years.
He was united in marriage to Marilou Klassen on
Aug. 12, 1950 at Immaculate Conception Catholic
Church, Elma, Iowa. The couple lived in Greene, Iowa
a short time before moving to Des Moines, Iowa,
where Lee was employed by the district division of
the Ford Motor Co. His job position progressed to
Zone Field Manager which included dealer contact
work over a good share of Iowa. In 1963 Lee
purchased the Ford dealership in Clear Lake which he
operated into the 70’s. He later was a partner in
several local businesses and purchased Clear Lake
Appliance in 1978 which he operated until 1992 when
he retired.
Lee thoroughly enjoyed the 25 years he lived on
North Shore and fully participated in both summer
and winter activities on the lake. He was a
dedicated Hawkeye fan and overall sports fan. His
most favorite pastime was playing golf. He was also
an avid reader.
He is survived by his wife, Marilou, Clear Lake;
a daughter, Sandy Paulson, West Branch, Iowa; two
sons, Bob Friedrichs and his wife, Debbie, Mason
City, Iowa, and Scott Friedrichs, Philadelphia,
Penn.; three grandchildren, Kristin Paulson, West
Branch, Iowa, Jessica Friedrichs and Joe Friedrichs,
both of Mason City, Iowa; four sisters, Evelyn
Staudt and her husband, Clarence, Marble Rock, Iowa,
Carol Davis and her husband, Ron, Rockford, Iowa,
Mary Koenigsfeld and her husband, Stephen, Marble
Rock, and Wilma Bock and her husband, Richard,
Charles City, Iowa; one brother, Robert Friedrichs
and his wife, Elva, Lisbon, Iowa; and many nieces
and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son
in infancy, James; and one sister, Edna Garl.
Ruth I. Wolfe
Ruth I. Wolfe, 85, of Fertile, Iowa, died
Wednesday, July 22, 1998 at North Iowa Mercy Health
Center, Mason City, Iowa.
Funeral services were held Saturday, July 25 at
Pilot Knob Lutheran Church, Forest City, Iowa, with
the Pastor Robert Snitzer officiating. Interment was
at Brush Point Cemetery, Fertile.
Ruth I. Wolfe, the daughter of Ben and Mollie
(Nelson) Myhre, was born Dec. 1, 1912 at Fertile.
She attended the Fertile schools and later received
her G.E.D. from NIACC at the age of 75.
On Aug. 26, 1936 she was married to Leslie "Mike"
Wolfe at the Fertile Lutheran parsonage. The couple
made their home in the rural Fertile area all of
their lives. Ruth spent her early years raising her
children and teaching piano lessons. She continued
to teach piano up until her death. She loved being
church organist for many years and enjoyed reading,
sewing, the neighborhood Birthday Club, and 62 years
of marriage.
Ruth was an active member of Pilot Knob Lutheran
Church and belonged to the Pilot Knob Women of Life.
She was also a member of the Fertile Garden Club,
Music Teachers of North Iowa as well as the State
and National Music Teacher’s Association.
She is survived by her husband, Leslie "Mike"
Wolfe of Fertile; four children, Deanna Jordan and
her husband, Raymond, Fertile, Harold Wolfe of Clear
Lake, Bob Wolfe and Sandy Yuhouse, Clear Lake, and
Linda Nuehring and her husband, Lowell, of Clear
Lake; 14 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a
sister, Delilah Olson, Forest City; and a brother,
Lloyd Myhre and his wife, Velma, Clear Lake.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and two
sons.
Honorary pallbearers were Dana Nuehring, Nicole
Gomez, Michelle Jurgensen, Candis Wolfe, Kim Wood,
Allison Wolfe, and Danielle Risetter.
Pallbearers were Aaron Wolfe, John Jordan,
Wendell Wolfe, Lindsay Jordan, Doug Jordan, Matt
Jurgensen, and Michael Wolfe.
