Harvey Vinton Wallace
Brakke
Mr. Harvey Vinton Wallace Brakke, 74, of Clear Lake,
Iowa, died Thursday, May 8, 1997 at the Muse-Norris
Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa.
Funeral services were held Saturday, May 10 at
the Fertile Lutheran Church, Fertile, Iowa, with the
Rev. Roger Kampstra officiating. Interment was in
Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City. The family
suggests memorials to the Harvey Vinton Wallace
Brakke memorial.
Harvey was born on the family farm, rural Lake
Mills, Iowa, the son of Halver and Tillie (Thompson)
Brakke on May 8, 1922. He was baptized and confirmed
in the Winnebago Lutheran Church, rural Lake Mills.
Harvey attended rural school through eighth grade
and then helped his dad with the farming which
pleased his dad. Harvey married Irene Gladys Lovick
on May 21, 1943 at the Fertile Lutheran Church,
Fertile. They continued to live on the family farm
until 1 when they bought a farm north of Clear Lake,
where he had lived ever since.
Harvey enjoyed farming, going to farm sales,
vacationing in the summer and winters with his wife
and other family members, and fishing in the
summers. He always made time for visitors with a
game of cards, a light-hearted conversation and
refreshments.
He was a member of Fertile Lutheran Church,
Fertile.
He is survived by a son, Kenneth Brakke, Clear
Lake; three grandchildren, Jeff Brakke and his wife,
Theresa, and their children, Barak and Haley, Joice,
Iowa, Tom Brakke and his wife, Candy, and their
children, Tabitha and Sara, Clear Lake, Lori Brakke,
Scottsdale, Ariz.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife
on Jan. 14, 1992; one brother, Don; one
half-brother, Bob; and two half-sisters, Helen and
Ethel.
Pallbearers were Jeff Brakke, Rudy Monson,
Herbert Hangdahl, Tom Brakke, Ray Charlson, and
Wallace Johnson.
Hazel K. Friest
Hazel K. Friest, 93, of Clear Lake, Iowa, died
Wednesday, May 7, 1997 at the Oakwood Care Center in
Clear Lake.
Funeral services were held Saturday, May 10 at
Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake, with the Rev.
Dean Hess officiating. Burial will be in the Clear
Lake Cemetery, Clear Lake.
The family suggests memorials to the American
Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.
Hazel was born Oct. 9, 1903 on the family farm in
rural Clear Lake, the daughter of Soren and Johanna
K. (Madsen) Villadsen. She attended rural school in
Clear Lake.
On Jan. 27, 1921 she was united in marriage to
Chris Sorensen. They farmed together north of Clear
Lake. They eventually sold the farm to purchase a
grocery store located on North 8th Street, Clear
Lake. Chris preceded her in death on May 24, 1971.
Hazel was employed at the Clear Lake Creamery and
State Brand Creamery. She worked at the Surf
Ballroom until it burned, then was employed at
Billy's Casino in Clear Lake as a waitress. When the
Surf was rebuilt she returned to work at the Surf.
On Nov. 10, 1973 she married Marshall Friest. He
preceded her in death on Feb. 18, 1992.
Hazel was a member of the Patience Circle at Zion
Lutheran Church, where she was a member. She was
also a member of Danish Brotherhood. Her hobbies
included tatting, crocheting and raising flowers.
She is survived by four sons, Donald Friest and
his wife, Marge, of Mason City, Iowa, Jim Friest and
his wife, Rita, of Decorah, Iowa, Robert Friest and
his wife, Mary Sue, of Clear Lake and Ken Friest and
his wife, Anita, of Clear Lake; two sisters, Ellen
Steege, of Clear Lake, and Anna Freeman of Hammond,
Ind.; a sister-in-law, Lucille Villadsen, Lake
Station, Ind.; seven grandchildren, Jon Friest of
Indianola, Iowa, Blane Friest of Waukesha, Wis.,
Scott Friest and his wife, Sharon, of Clear Lake,
D.J. Friest of Decorah, Greg Friest and his wife,
Wendy, of Kensett, Iowa, Jennifer Friest of
Waterloo, Iowa, and Amy Friest of Mason City; five
great-grandchildren, Travis, Amanda, Kenneth, Jacob
and Dylan; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two
husbands; and five brothers.
Organist Joyce TenHaken accompanied soloist
Bonnie Hall.
Honorary pallbearers were Clair Heifner, Margaret
Casperson, Millie Matson, Eleanor Wubben
Pallbearers were Clayton Lincicum, Jack Gilles,
Gene Ehlert, Jesse Pate, Bill Stoyles, and Jim
Hovelson.
Gregory W. 'Greg' Hawley
Gregory W. 'Greg' Hawley, 30, of Clear Lake,
Iowa, died Wednesday, May 7, 1997, at North Iowa
Mercy Health Center, Mason City, Iowa.
Memorial services were held Monday, May 12 at
the United Methodist Church, Clear Lake, with the
Rev. Fred Lewis officiating. Burial was in the
Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.
Memorials may be given to the United Methodist
Church, Clear Lake, or the American Heart
Association in his memory.
Gregory W. Hawley was born July 4, 1966, in
Quincy, Ill., the son of Robert W. and Alice (Vanderwal)
Hawley.
The family lived in various cities throughout the
United States while he was growing up.
Greg graduated from high school in Germantown,
Tenn.
He then graduated from Columbia School of
Broadcasting in Memphis, Tenn.
He worked for Radio Shack at Plaza West, Mason
City, for two years and for the past three and
one-half years, he worked for KLSS/KRIB Radio
Station. Just recently he also went to work for New
Horizons Electronics out of Austin, Minn.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church,
Clear Lake; current president of the North Iowa
Amateur Radio Club, and a member of the Clear Lake
Christian Singles Group.
He is survived by his parents, Robert W. and
Alice Hawley, Clear Lake; a brother, Doug Hawley and
his wife, Jody, Des Moines, Iowa; a nephew, Joshua
Hawley, Des Moines; his paternal grandmother, Louise
Hawley of Mason City; and his maternal grandmother,
Gertrude Vanderwal of Pella, Iowa; and numerous
cousins.
He was preceded in death by his paternal
grandfather; his maternal grandfather; two uncles,
Chuck Glaman and David Hawley; one aunt, Julie
Hawley; and a cousin, Chris.

Nell A. Knapp
Memorial services for Nell A. Knapp, 89, formerly
of Clear Lake, Iowa, will be held Saturday, May 24,
at 10:30 a.m. at the Congregational Church, Clear
Lake, with the Rev. Thomas Healey officiating.
Inurnment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Congregational
Church, Clear Lake, or the University of Iowa
Department of Audiology and Speech Pathology.
Nell died Thursday, Feb. 27, 1997 at the
Crestview Care Center, West Branch, Iowa following a
long illness.
Edward Eugene Clifford
Edward Eugene Clifford, 43, of Clear Lake, Iowa,
died Wednesday, May 14, 1997 at the Muse-Norris
Hospice inpatient unit.
Funeral services were conducted at the Clear Lake
United Methodist Church Saturday, May 17, with the
Rev. Fred Lewis officiating. The Fullerton Patterson
James Funeral Chapel, 123 2nd St. S.E., Mason City,
was in charge of arrangements. Interment was at the
Clear Lake Cemetery with full military honors by the
Clear Lake American Legion. Memorials can be made to
the Edward Clifford Memorial Fund.
Edward was born on Nov. 29, 1953 in Nora Springs,
Iowa, the son of Eugene and Velma (Nihoff) Clifford.
He received his education in Nora Springs and Mason
City. He served his country in the Army from 1974 to
1977 while he was stationed in Alaska. Following his
honorable discharge he worked customizing vans for
Winnebago, and then was employed at Tonka Coolers.
He most recently was employed in maintenance at the
Nora Springs Care Center where he worked until his
illness forced him to quit on April 7, 1997.
Edward was united in marriage to Nancy Stover on
Aug. 7, 1993 in Clear Lake. Ed was a master of
gardening, tending his vegetable garden and everyone
enjoyed his flower and rock gardens as well. He also
enjoyed pheasant hunting and fishing at Clear Lake.
He is a member of the American Legion in Clear Lake.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy, of Clear Lake;
his mother, Velma, DeBolt, Florence, Ky.; one
daughter, Tonya Clifford; and one son, Jeramya
Clifford, both of Mason City; two step-daughters,
Tonya and her husband, Wayne Martin, Rockwell, Iowa,
Janan Walters, Rockford, Iowa; one step-son, Monte
and his wife, Tammi Walters, Osage, Iowa; two
sisters, Betty Clifford, Mason City, and Ruth Ann
and her husband, Jay Fredstrom, Florence, Ky.; a
granddaughter, Zelda Bass, Mason City; two
step-grandchildren, Abby and Colby Martin; and many
nieces and nephews; and his dearest and closest
friends, Janice Losee, and Marilyn and Rich Ritter.
He was preceded in death by his father, Eugene,
and his grandparents.
Harold Petersen
Mr. Harold Petersen, 81, of Mason City, Iowa,
died Tuesday, May 13, 1997 at the North Iowa Mercy
Health Center East Campus, Mason City.
Funeral services were held Friday, May 16, at the
Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with the
Rev. Daird Korth officiating. Interment was in the
Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City. Military honors
were held by the Mason City Veterans Memorial
Association. The family suggests memorials to the
Harold Peterson memorial fund.
Harold was born on the family farm in rural
Thornton, Iowa, the son of Marinus and Freda
(Nielsen) Petersen on July 11, 1915. He attended
rural school in Thornton.
Harold farmed with his father until 1942, then
entered the Army during World War II and served in
the European Pacific Theater. Following the service
he came back to the family farm.
Harold married Gladys Jean Lynch and they farmed
southeast of Rockwell, Iowa, for a number of years.
Harold moved to Marshalltown, Iowa in 1965 and
worked for Fisher Controls until his retirement in
1978. He then moved to the Sheffield, Iowa area and
later to his present home in Mason City.
He enjoyed keeping in contact with his army
buddies, doing wood working crafts, helping his
friends and especially his grandchildren. He was a
life member of the VFW Post #733, Mason City.
He is survived by his son, Chris Petersen and his
wife, Kristi, Clear Lake; three sisters, Sylvia
Pross and her husband, William D., Diamond Head,
Miss., Alma Laudner and her husband, W.C. Dugan,
Mason City, and Mrs. Roland (Norma) Salier, Nora
Springs, Iowa; one brother, Elmer Petersen, Proctor,
Minn.; two grandchildren, Rebecca and Matthew
Petersen.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his
wife, Jean; one brother; and a sister.
Honorary pallbearers were Dain Salier, Ronnie
Pross, Wayne Janssen, Dan Flugge, Kurt Stowe.
Pallbearers were Bill Salier, Greg Salier,
Matthew Petersen, Al Holm and Duane Fibelstad.
Donna Lee Akerberg
Mrs. Donna Lee Akerberg, 70, of Clear Lake, Iowa,
died Monday, May 12, 1997 at the Muse-Norris Hospice
Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa.
Memorial services were held Thursday, May 15, at
the Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev.
Kermit Roisen and Rev. Donald Simmonds officiating.
The body was cremated. Ward-Van Slyke Colonial
Chapel was in charge of services.
The family suggests memorials to the Hospice of
North Iowa.
Donna was born May 30, 1926 in Huron, S.D., the
daughter of Dick Edward and Leone (Bales) White. She
graduated from Central High School, Sioux City, Iowa
in 1944.
Donna married Warren Akerberg on May 31, 1945 in
Sioux City, Iowa. They moved to Clear Lake in 1951.
She was secretary for Kimball-White Seed Co. in
Clear Lake from 1952-54. She modeled for Lundberg's
Clothing in 1956. Donna was secretary at the
Congregational Church, Clear Lake in the 1970s.
Donna was one of the originators of Artichoke Two
Antiques and a cofounder of Antique Alley in Clear
Lake. She was a gray lady at North Iowa Medical
Center for over 10 years.
Donna and Warren enjoyed spending the last 13
winters on their boat, Checkers, in Marathon, Fla.,
where she was a great first mate and pilot. Donna
loved playing bridge, traveling, her friends and
especially her family.
She is survived by her husband, Warren Akerberg,
Clear Lake; three children, Jan Edward Akerberg and
his wife, Nora, Clayton, Mo., Deby Lee Cassill,
Talahasse, Fla., and Lon Paul Akerberg and his wife,
Lynn, Lawrence, Kan.; six grandchildren, Daniel
Cassill, Casie Akerberg, Nicholas Akerberg, Clinton
Akerberg, Christopher Kelly and Alexander Akerberg.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and one
sister, Patty Henry.
Allan S. Proctor
Memorial services were held for Allan S. Proctor
Friday, May 16, 1997, at Garden of Memories, Mason
City, Iowa, who died Nov. 28, 1996.
Friends and relatives were here from Baton Rouge,
La., Little Rock, Ark., Fifty Lakes, Minn., Clear
Lake, Latimer, Iowa Falls and Burchinal, Iowa.
Mandella Olive Huber
Mrs. Mandella Olive Huber, 85, of Clear Lake,
died Sunday, May 18, 1997, at the IOOF Home, Mason
City, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 22,
at 10:30 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake,
with the Rev. Dean Hess officiating. Interment will
be in the Clear Lake Cemetery, Clear Lake.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, May 21, from 5-8
p.m. at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear
Lake. The family suggests memorials to the Mandella
O. Huber Memorial Fund.
Mandella was born Oct. 15, 1911 in Radcliffe,
Iowa, the daughter of John and Ida (Anderson)
Amundson. She moved with her family to Clear Lake in
1923. Mandella graduated from Clear Lake High School
in 1929.
Mandella worked for several years for the Clear
Lake Telephone Company as a switchboard operator.
She married Paul Johannessen in 1934 and he preceded
her in death in 1945. She married Albert Huber in
1947.
Mandella enjoyed raising flowers, gardening,
playing cards, ballroom dancing, was noted for her
great cooking, making pies as she operated the
restaurant in the sale barn in Clear Lake. She
especially enjoyed being around her family.
Mandella was a member of Zion Lutheran Church,
Clear Lake; Rebekah Lodge 105 and Do Your Bit Club.
She is survived by three sons, Robert Johannessen
and his wife, Bonnie, Park Rapids, Minn., Allen
Johannessen, and his wife, Janet, Montrose, Colo.,
and Eugene Huber and his wife, Nancy, Clear Lake; 15
grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and many
nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two
husbands; two sisters; and six brothers.
Justine Weydert
Mrs. Justine Weydert, 102, of Clear Lake, died
Tuesday, May 20, 1997 at the Muse-Norris Hospice
Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa.

Marian R. Caspersen
Marian R. Caspersen Ashland Grimm, 69, of Clear
Lake, died Sunday, May 18, 1997 at North Iowa Mercy
Health Center's East Campus, Mason City, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday),
May 21, at 1:30 p.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church,
Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dean Hess and Rev. Kermit
Roisen officiating. Burial will be in the Clear Lake
Cemetery, Clear Lake.
The family suggests memorials to the Zion
Lutheran Church and the Leukemia Society.
Marian was born Aug. 12, 1927 in Rockwell, Iowa,
the daughter of Paul and Mary (O'Rourke) Caspersen.
She graduated from Rockwell High School in 1945.
On Jan. 25, 1949 she married Virgil Ashland. The
couple farmed until his death in 1977. She and
Virgil had five children.
In 1967, Marian became a licensed cosmetologist.
She operated Marian's Beauty Shop for a number of
years. Her work experience also included working as
an instructor at Capri School of Cosmetology in
Mason City, Iowa, as well as working as an
instructor at Capri School of Cosmetology in Mason
City, as well as working with Ruth Toppin, and later
with her daughter, Jane, at the Mane Salon and Hair
West, both in Clear Lake, until her retirement in
January 1996.
In 1982, she and Jay Grimm were married and
continued to reside south of Clear Lake until her
death following a brief illness.
She was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church
in Clear Lake.
She is survived by her husband, Jay Grimm, of
Clear Lake; five children, Susan Hrubes and her
husband, Marvin, of Woodbridge, Va., Jim Ashland,
Tom Ashland and his wife, Georgia, Jane Ashland
Trayers and Tim Ashland and his special friend,
Katie Donnelly all of Clear Lake; her father, Paul
Caspersen, Rockwell, Iowa; two brothers, Louis
Caspersen and his wife, Ceciela, of Houston, Texas,
and Leon Caspersen and his wife, Irene, of Clear
Lake; a sister, Phyllis Wickwire, or Rockwell, Iowa;
three step-children, Lowell Grimm and his wife,
Carrie, of Lakeville, Minn., Douglas Grimm of Clear
Lake, and Chris Grimm and his wife, Mary, of
Bettendorf, Iowa; eight grandchildren, Matthew and
Lisa Hrubes, Christopher and Jeremy Ashland, Amber
Ashland, Leigh, Danielle and Ashley Trayers; six
step-grandchildren, Tommy and Hannah Grimm, Delisha
Ransom, Desire\'d5e Grimm, and Christina and Katie
Grimm.
She was preceded in death by her first husband;
her mother; and a sister, Mercedes Doolan.

Justine Barbara Weydert
Justine Barbara Weydert, 102, of Clear Lake,
Iowa, died Tuesday, May 20, 1997, at the Muse-Norris
Hospice In-Patient Unit in Mason City, Iowa.
Funeral services were held Friday, May 23, at St.
Patrick's Catholic Church in Clear Lake, with Msgr.
Joseph J. Slepicka officiating. Burial was in Clear
Lake Cemetery. A scriptural wake service was held
Thursday, May 22. The family suggests memorials in
her name.
Justine was born April 23, 1895 in Whittemore,
Iowa, the third of eight children born to Simon Paul
and Pauline (Bonstetter) Weber Sr. She was educated
in the Whittemore area.
On Oct. 2, 1917 she was united in marriage to
Peter Weydert in Whittemore. The couple farmed at
Bode, Iowa until 1920. Later that year they moved to
Riceland, Minn. They returned to Iowa in 1928 and
farmed south of Whittemore. In 1928, they purchased
a farm south of Ventura, Iowa and farmed there until
1961. She then retired to her present Clear Lake
address.
She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church
in Clear Lake for 54 years and served in St. Ann's
Circle. She was a charter member of the Union Dozen
Club of Ventura.
She is survived by six children, Marvin Weydert,
Mason City, Pauline Weydert Quinn and her husband,
Lester, of Brandon, Minn., Grace Jones and her
husband, Joseph, Thornton, Iowa, Simon Weydert and
his wife, Phyllis, Rockwell, Iowa, Barbara Ann
Weydert Chisholm, Osage, Iowa, and Jackie Weydert
Quinn and her husband, Bud, of Ventura, Iowa; 30
grandchildren; 69 great-grandchildren; and 22
great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents;
husband; two granddaughters, Suzanne and Peggy Ann
Jones; a daughter-in-law, Anna Mae Weydert; a
son-in-law, James Chisholm; five brothers; and two
sisters.
Organist Seth Banwell accompanied soloist Angela
Willits.
Honorary pallbearers were all grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Marvin Weydert, Gary Quinn, Tim
Weydert, Mark Chisholm, Curt Quinn, and Denny Cook.
Hazel Mae McKinley
Hazel Mae McKinley, 77, of Clear Lake, Iowa, died
Monday, May 19, 1997 at the North Iowa Mercy Health
Center East Campus in Mason City, Iowa.
Funeral services were held Thursday, May 22, at
the Agape Christian Family Church, Clear Lake, with
the Rev. David Toyne and Rev. Dennis Toyne
officiating, both sons of Hazel McKinley. Burial was
in the Jefferson Cemetery, Jefferson, Iowa.
The family of Hazel Mae McKinley request memorial
contributions be made in her memory.
Hazel was born May 11, 1920, in the N.W.
Territory in Canada, the daughter of Pearl and Mary
Maude (McCarty) Burgher. She attended and received
her education in the Maloy, Iowa school system
graduating from high school. She also received her
teachers certificate from the Merryville, Mo.,
teachers college. After completing her education she
taught in rural country schools in southern Iowa.
She was united in marriage to Maurice Gail Toyne on
July 23, 1941 . He preceded her in death in 1961.
She was united in marriage to Clarence McKinley on
Nov. 7, 1964. He preceded her in death on May 20,
1986. Throughout her life she did volunteer work for
the Jefferson Hospital and other organizations.
She enjoyed gardening, flowers, birds, nature,
sewing and quilting, but her great love was being a
devoted Christian.
Hazel was a courageous survivor of cancer who
lived to love and care for her family.
She was a member of the Agape Christian Family
Church in Clear Lake, former member of the Assembly
of God Church in Hampton, Iowa, and was former
member of the Abundant Life Ministries Church in
Jefferson.
She is survived by three sons, Daniel Duane
Toyne and his wife, Lindy, of Reelsville, Ind., Rev.
Dennis Lee Toyne and his wife, Sandy of Greenbay,
Wis., Rev. David Lyle Toyne and his wife, Kristine,
Clear Lake; three daughters, Carol Ann Anderson and
her husband, Bernard of Broken Arrow, Okla., Darlene
May Toyne, Mason City, and Kyla Jones and her
husband, James Robert of Norwalk, Iowa; 13
grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a sister,
Doris Drake, Mt. Ayr, Iowa; and one brother, Bill
Burgher and his wife, Delores, Blairesburg, Neb.;
and many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two
husbands; one daughter, Maureen Kay Toyne; and three
brothers, Lyle, Donald and Howard Burgher.
Elaine Grace Phinney
Elaine Grace Phinney, 67, of Clear Lake, Iowa,
died Saturday, May 24, 1997 at her home.
Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday),
May 28, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church
in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Fred Lewis officiating.
Burial will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery.
The family suggests memorials be made to the
Elaine G. Phinney Memorial Fund.
Elaine was born July 25, 1929 in Vermillion,
S.D., the daughter of Raymond W. and Twila L.
(Clark) Harrington. She graduated from Vermillion
High School and attended the University of South
Dakota at Yankton, S.D., marjoring in music.
She married George Eugene Phinney Sept. 11, 1949
in Vermillion. The couple divorced Jan. 5, 1961.
Elaine moved to Clear Lake from Mason City in
1959 and resided here since. She was a bookkeeper
and receptionist for the Clear Lake Medical Group,
did babysitting, and was previously employed by the
Libby Owend Glass Co. She had been a realtor in
Clear Lake since 1972.
Her work as a realtor, along with the joys of
being a grandmother, were very important to her.
Elaine was a member and ambassador of the United
Methodist Church in Clear Lake. She also enjoyed
membership in the Clear Lake V.F.W. Auxiliary, Tina
Rebekah Lodge in Clear Lake, Clear Lake Lioness
Club, Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce, Chamber
First Mates and Clear Lake Board of Realtors.
She is survived by three sons, Douglas Phinney
and his wife, Leeza, of Ventura, Iowa, Dean Phinney
and his wife, Teresa, of Iowa City, Iowa, and Don
Phinney, of Clear Lake; a brother, Robert Harrington
and his wife, Ethel, of Clear Lake; and five
grandchildren, Justin, Melissa, Brandon, Ashley and
Anthony Phinney.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a
brother, Gordon Harrington; and an infant sister.
Ellen Marie Steege
Ellen Marie Steege, 88, of Clear Lake, died
Sunday, May 25, 1997 at Oakwood Care Center in Clear
Lake.
Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday),
May 28, at 1:30 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, Clear
Lake, with the Rev. Dean Hess and Rev. Kermit Roisen
officiating. Burial will be in Clear Lake Cemetery.
The family suggests memorials be made to Hospice
of North Iowa or Zion Lutheran Church.
Ellen was born on a farm Aug. 25, 1908 in rural
Clear Lake, the daughter of Sam and Johanna Kirstina
(Madsen) Villadsen. She attended country school.
On Sept. 23, 1925 she was united in marriage with
Glen H. Steege in Clear Lake. The couple farmed in
several locations around Clear Lake before moving
into town in 1942. Glen preceded her in death May 2,
1988.
Ellen worked as a clerk at the A&P Grocery Store
and later at State Brand Creamery. She retired in
1965. Her hobbies included crafts and hand work,
baking, cooking and traveling. She especially
enjoyed spending time with her family.
Her memberships at Zion Lutheran Church in Clear
Lake was very important in her life. She was an
honorary member of Grace Circle at the church. She
was also a member of Danish Sisterhood.
As Ellen's health declined, she moved to Oakwood
Care Center in Clear Lake.
She is survived by a son, Keith Steege and his
wife, Bonnie, of Clear Lake; two daughters, Alice
Nielsen and her husband, Floyd, Clear Lake, and
Joann Hokel and her husband, Harold of Webster City,
Iowa; a sister, Anna Freeman, Hammond, Ind.; a
sister-in-law, Lucille Villadsen, of Lake Station,
Ind.; eight grandchildren, Lonnie Brewington and her
husband, Andrew, Barbara Bendetti and her husband,
Bob, Diana Steeg, Criag Nielsen, Nancy Whaley and
her husband, Mark, Karl Hokel and his wife, Vicki,
Kyle Hokel and Kurt Hokel; six great-grandchildren,
Bobbi Frisby, Matthew Lamb, Ryan Whaley, Dane
Whaley, Megan Hokel, Tiffanee Hokel; and two
great-grandchildren, Audrey and Troy Frisby.
She was preceded in death by her husband;
parents; a sister, Hazel Friest; and five brothers,
Gunner, Nels, Gordon, Hans and Art Villadsen.
