Marjorie Benner
Norma Marjorie Benner, 79, of Clear Lake, Iowa, died
Wednesday, March 5, 1997, at the Oakwood Care Center
in Clear Lake.
Funeral services were held Saturday, March 8 at
the Clear Lake United Methodist Church, Clear Lake,
with the Rev. Fred Lewis officiating. Interment was
in the Clear Lake Cemetery, Clear Lake. Ward-Van
Slyke Colonial Chapel was in charge of services.
The family requests memorial contributions be
made to the United Methodist Church in Clear Lake in
her memory.
Norma Marjorie Benner was born on Nov. 13, 1917,
in Marble Rock, Iowa, the daughter of Alton Martin
and Maude Beatrice (Davis) Preston. She attended and
received her education in the Marble Rock Schools
graduating from Marble Rock High School in 1935.
After completing her education she began working in
the print room for State Brand Creamery in Mason
City, Iowa, in 1937. She was united in marriage to
Rodney Duane Benner on Oct. 16, 1938 in Princeton,
Mo. After their marriage they lived in Mason City,
Ventura and in October 1952, they moved to Clear
Lake where she cleaned cottages in Clear Lake for
several years.
She enjoyed traveling, country music, cooking,
watching Soap Operas on T.V., and reading, but her
great love and enjoyment was her family and
grandchildren.
Norma was a member of the United Methodist Church
in Clear Lake and the VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post
$1658 in Clear Lake.
She is survived by her husband, Rodney Benner of
Clear Lake; three daughters, Norma Jean Benner of
Iowa City, Iowa, Nancy Lee Hicks, of Ft. Meyers,
Fla., and Carol Marie Hayes, Orlando, Fla.; one son,
James Duane Benner of the Oakwood Care Center in
Clear Lake; five grandchildren; five
great-grandchildren; one sister, Lanora Schultz of
Marble Rock, as well as other relatives and
friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one
grandson, Eddie Wendall Hahn; two brothers, Ralph
and Marvin Preston; and one sister, Audrey Billette.
Honorary pallbearers were Bill Brower and Leo
Lallier.
Pallbearers were Roy Schumacher, Ron Springer,
Walt Gorman, William (Sparky) Sparks, Ernie Woiwood,
Darrell Avery.

Roger D. Olson
Roger D. Olson, 56, of Ventura, died Tuesday,
March 4, 1997 at the Austin Medical Center in
Austin, Minn.
Funeral services were held Saturday, March 8 at
the United Methodist Church in Klemme, Iowa, with
the Rev. Jerry Robertson officiating. Burial was in
Elk Township Cemetery in Klemme.
Roger Duane Olson, son of Melvin A. and Christina
Louise (Schwartz) Olson, was born April 1, 1940 on a
farm near Clear Lake. Roger attended school at
Ventura, Iowa, and Klemme. On May 28, 1960 he
married Linda L. Wolters at the Little Brown Church
near Nashua Iowa. He worked as a truck driver for
the Doden Truck Line in Woden, Iowa, for the Klemme
Cooperative Elevator, Land O\'d5Lakes in Mason City,
Iowa, for 16 years and then farmed west of Ventura
from 1963, until the time of his death. He did
custom trucking and baling, fed feeder cattle and
was a cattle buyer. He enjoyed his three grandsons,
family and just plain working.
He is survived by his wife, Linda L. Olson of
Ventura; two sons, Dan Olson and his wife, Eenja,
and their two sons, Jacob and Daniel, all of Tague,
South Korea and Gregory Olson and his wife,
Kimberly, and their son, Zachary, of Kansas City,
Mo.; his mother, Christina Olsen and her husband,
Arlin, of Klemme; his father, Melvin Olson and his
wife, Mary, of Mason City; three brothers, Merlyn
Olson and his wife, Audrey, of Santa Maria, Calif.,
Harland Olsen and his wife, Janet, of Mason City and
Randy Olsen and his wife, Monica, Garner; a sister,
Susie Olsen of Klemme and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents; and
a special uncle, Herbert Schwartz.
Mrs. Seth Priebe, organist, accompanied soloist
Doug Hayes.
Honorary pallbearers were DuWayne Bitker, Merle
Pannhoff, Dean Michaelson, Scott Huerter, Lynn
Wolters, Robert Wolters, DeJay Wolters, Jim Olsen
and Ryan Olsen.
Pallbearers were Tom Boehnke, Tom Waddingham,
Gary Anderson, Raymond Pannhoff, Roger Schmidt and

Judith 'Judy' Elaine Sharp
Judith 'Judy' Elaine Sharp, 57, of Clear Lake,
Iowa, died Friday, March 7, 1997, at her home in
Clear Lake.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 11, at
the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, with the Rev.
David Langer of the First Congregational Church in
Buffalo Center, Iowa, officiating. Following the
services the body was cremated.
The family of Judith 'Judy' Elaine Sharp has
requested that memorial contributions be made to the
Judith 'Judy' Elaine Sharp memorial fund in her
memory.
Judith 'Judy' Elaine Sharp was born on Feb. 16,
1940, in Decatur, Ill., the daughter of James Russel
and Zola Frances (Riley) Jenkins. She attended and
received her high school education in the Mason City
High School, Mason City, Iowa, graduating from Mason
City High School in 1958. After completing her
education she worked as a secretary in the Mason
City area. She was united in marriage to James R.
Dickirson. He preceded her in death on May 3, 1987.
She enjoyed sewing, needlework, walking, the
outdoors and car rides around the lake, but her
great love and enjoyment was being a housewife,
mother, friend to all and being a babysitter to a
special boy, Joshua Trimble of Clear Lake.
She was a former member of the Moose Lodge #1328
in Mason City.
She is survived by her father, James Jenkins,
Buffalo Center; one daughter, Jody R. Cramer and her
husband, John B. of Medford, Minn.; three step-sons,
Lee Hoffman, Clear Lake, Mike Sharp of Michigan and
Allan Sharp of Ft. Dodge, Iowa; four step-daughters,
Darcy Skellenger and her husband, Dan of Clear Lake,
Diana Byington and her husband, Tim, of Clear Lake,
Pam West and her husband, Bill, of Ft. Dodge, Debra
Evans and her husband, Kenneth, of Ft. Dodge; 12
grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one sister,
Jill Larson and her husband, James, of Buffalo
Center; one nephew, Jeff Ellis and his wife, Connie,
of Mason City; and a special cousin, Ann Brown of
Niantic, Ill.; as well as other relatives and
friends.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Frances
Jenkins; two husbands, James R. Dickirson and Virgil
Sharp; and a step-daughter, Linda Nelson Lindstrom.
Organist Mary Jane Reynolds was accompanied by
Marilyn Sadler.
Honorary pallbearers were Dean VanHorn, Stan
Barnes and Earl Hoffman.
Esther A. 'Thompson'
Nauman
Esther A. 'Thompson' Nauman, 74, of Mason City,
Iowa, died Friday, March 7, 1997 at St. Mary's
Hospital, Rochester, Minn.
Graveside Inurnment services were held Tuesday,
March 11 at Memorial Park Cemetery, with the Rev.
David Olson of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Manly,
Iowa, officiating.
Esther was born Feb. 25, 1923 at Forest City,
Iowa, the daughter of Edward and Anna (Rodberg)
Vaage. She graduated from the Hanlontown High
School. She was united in marriage to Orville
Thompson on Oct. 11, 1942 at Albany, Mo. She made
her home with her parents while Orville served his
country during World War II. Following his return
they lived near Hanlontown, Iowa, and Fertile, Iowa.
Following his death in 1963 she raised her family in
Hanlontown and Clear Lake. On July 6, 1965 at
Charles City, Iowa, she married Arthur Nauman. They
then lived in St. Charles, Mo. and later Davenport,
Iowa. In 1968 they moved to Mason City, where she
made her home since. Arthur preceded her in death in
1984.
She is survived by three sons, James and his
wife, Sheryl Thompson, Manly, Steven and his wife,
Peggy Thompson, St. Ansgar, Iowa, and Jeffrey
Thompson, Mason City; one sister, Mrs. Robert
(Sylvia) Elwood, Jonesburg, Mo.; and one brother,
Arthur, and his wife, Maxine Vaage, Des Moines,
Iowa; and five grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two
husbands, Orville and Arthur; and two brothers, Earl
and Orvin Vaage.
Norma E.
Fatland
Mrs. Norma E. Fatland, 67, of Ventura, Iowa died
Monday, March 10, 1997 at home.
Funeral services were held Friday, March 14 at
Ventura United Methodist Church, Ventura, with the
Rev. David Gobeli officiating. Graveside services
were held at Ell Township Cemetery, Klemme, Iowa.
The Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, was
in charge of services. The family suggests memorials
to the Norma E. Fatland Memorial Fund.
Norma was born Sept. 10, 1929 north of Mason
City, Iowa, the daughter of Clarence Robert and
Helen Marie Elizabeth (Hagge) Holmes. She moved with
her family to a farm north of Ventura in 1937 and
graduated from Ventura High School in 1947. Norma
married Harold Albers Sept. 28, 1947 at the Clear
Lake United Methodist Church, Clear Lake, Iowa.
They farmed in the Klemme area until 1962, then
moved to a farm north of Ventura. In 1966 they moved
to Ventura Heights, where she has lived ever since.
Harold preceded her in death June 3, 1968.
Norma worked at Clear Lake Bank and Trust, Clear
Lake, from 1972-1992. Norma married James Fatland
Jan. 7, 1977 at the Reformed Church, Klemme, Iowa.
He preceded her in death April 17, 1995.
Norma enjoyed growing flowers, gardening, playing
cards, being with her family and spending time with
her sister. She was truly an angel among her family
and friends.
Norma was a member of the Ventura United
Methodist Church, Ventura.
She is survived by her children, Cheryl Lutz and
her husband, Randy, Mason City, Charlene Fatland and
her husband, Silas, Wiley, Colo., Sinva Opheim and
her husband, Randy, Plymouth, Iowa and Olina Blasi
and her husband, Jim, Hampton, Iowa; 10
grandchildren, Lisa Lutz, Jesse Lutz, Nicole
Fatland, Krystal Fatland, Kari Neuberger, Kyle
Neuberger, Aaron Opheim, Megan Opheim, Chad Hanneman
and Corey Hanneman; one great-granddaughter, Alexis
Hanneman; one sister, Carolyn Albers, Ventura; and
one brother, DuWayne Holmes and his wife, Darlene,
Clear Lake.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two
husbands; and one infant brother.
Temen Benford Peterson
Mr. Temen Benford Peterson, 79, of Clear Lake,
Iowa, died Thursday, March 13, 1997 at his home.
Funeral services were held Monday, March 17 at
the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with
the Rev. Dean Hess officiating of Zion Lutheran
Church, Clear Lake. Graveside services were held at
the Fremont Lutheran Church, rural Cresco, Iowa. The
family suggests memorials may be made to the Temen
Benford Peterson Memorial Fund.
Temen was born July 14, 1917 in rural Cresco,
Iowa, the son of Ole and Nicolena (Granhaug)
Peterson. He attended rural Fremont #3 school, rural
Cresco.
Temen worked on the farm with his family, until
entering the Army Air Forces in May 1941 and serving
as a radio operator and gunner. Sgt. Peterson was
awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for
extraordinary achievement during the Eighth Air
Force bombing attacks on vital German industrial
targets and enemy held installations. The official
citation accompanying the award of the DFC commented
on the courage, coolness and skill displayed by Sgt.
Peterson on all occasions. As a member of the Third
Bombardment Division which was cited for the now
historic England-Africa shuttle mission to
Messerschmitt factories at Regensburg, Germany in
August 1943, he also earned the Air Medal and three
Oak Leaf Clusters to the Air Medal.
After the service, Temen returned to the family
farm. In 1946, he moved to Chicago, Ill., where he
drove a city bus. He later was employed by Greyhound
Transportation. In 1955, he returned to Iowa and
worked on the family farm at Cresco until 1957. He
was a driver for the Indianhead Transport terminal
in Clear Lake. In 1963 he moved to Clear Lake and
resided there until his death.
Temen enjoyed his family, especially spending
time with his three children. His hobbies included
an interest in antique tractors. He was a member of
Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake.
He is survived by his children, Gale Temen
Peterson, Clear Lake, Pamela Peterson and her
husband, Brent, Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Verlene
Vanderpool and her husband, J. David of Clive, Iowa;
two grandchildren, Alli and David Vanderpool; two
sisters, Alice Johnson and Helen Syverud, both of
Evansdale, Iowa; and a brother, Jens Peterson,
Decorah, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and
seven brothers and sisters.

Arlin Bigalk, Brent Peterson, David Vestweber, Dean

Sharon
Janine Hayungs
Sharon Janine Hayungs, 48, of Clear Lake, Iowa,
died Saturday, March 15, 1997 at North Iowa Mercy
Health Center East Campus, Mason City, Iowa.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 18 at
the Rudd United Methodist Church, Rudd, Iowa, with
the Rev. Deborah Stowers officiating. Burial was in
the Evergreen Cemetery, Rudd.
The family suggests memorials may be made in her
name.
Sharon was born May 4, 1948 in Charles City,
Iowa, the daughter of John and Betty (Raymond)
Hayungs. She graduated from Rudd-Rockford-Marble
Rock High School in 1967. Following graduation she
moved to California and lived with her aunt.
Sharon returned to Mason City and was employed at
the Good Shepherd Nursing Home and Klipto. She also
assisted in Dr. Kopal's office. She moved to Clear
Lake in 1976, where she owned and operated the White
Glove Cleaning Service. She was also employed at
Shady Beach, Town Pump, V.F.W. Club, Lake Lanes and
the Lady of the Lake.
She was an avid hockey fan, who also enjoyed
bowling, playing pool, ceramics and collecting
bells. She loved to care for others.
She is survived by her father and mother, John
and Betty Hayungs of Rudd; her very special friend
of 20 years, Louie Ziesman of Clear Lake; two
brothers, Darrell and John R. Hayungs Jr., both of
Rudd; a sister, Karen Courter of Rudd; and a very
special niece, Lisa Courter of Rudd.
She was preceded in death by her brother, David
Hayungs; an infant brother, Richard Hayungs; and her
grandparents..
Mary Malli
Mary Malli, 54, of Ft. Atkinson, Iowa, died
Saturday, March 15, 1997 at U.C.M.H. in Decorah,
Iowa, of cancer.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 18 at
St. John's Catholic Church, Ft. Atkinson, with the
Rev. Jacob Roth officiating. Burial was in Mt.
Olivet Cemetery, Waukon, Iowa.
Mary Ceceil Manton was born on March 6, 1943 at
LaCrosse, Wis. to John and Mary (Marley) Manton. She
received her education at St. George in Lansing,
Iowa.
On Feb. 20, 1965 she married Robert K. Malli at
Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Lansing,
Iowa. Mary lived in the Lansing area until 1965 when
Mary and Robert moved to Waukon. They lived there
until 1988 when they moved to Ft. Atkinson. She was
employed at Lickety Split in Ft. Atkinson, and K & S
Super Valu in Decorah.
Mary was a member of St. John's Catholic Church.
She is survived by her mother; husband; four
children, Suzanne Malli, Rochester, Minn., Robert
Malli, Washington D.C., Mike and Chrissa Malli,
Decorah, and Patrick Malli, U.S.A.F. in Germany; a
sister, Kathleen Keenan, McGregor, Iowa; and one
granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her father.
Pallbearers were Bill Keenan, Dick Keenan, Brian
Keenan, Paul Farley, Ray Mullarkey and Robert
Rausch.
Mabel Emily Bitker
Mrs. Mabel Emily Bitker, 93, of Clear Lake, Iowa,
died Friday, March 21, 1997 at the Willow Creek
Health Care, Mason City, Iowa. Services are pending
at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake.
Neva Armsbury
Mrs. Neva Armsbury, 84, of Clear Lake, Iowa, died
Monday, March 24, 1997 at the North Iowa Mercy
Health Center East Campus, Mason City, Iowa. Funeral
services are pending at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial
Chapel, Clear Lake.
