Keith E. Neal
Keith E. Neal, 74, of Clear Lake, Iowa, died Friday,
June 6, 1997 at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient
Unit, Mason City, Iowa.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 10 at
the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with
the Rev. Fred Lewis officiating. Inurnment services
will be held at a later date in Memorial Park
Cemetery, Mason City.
Memorials may be given to Hospice of North Iowa
or the Clear Lake United Methodist Church in memory
of Keith E. Neal.
Keith E. Neal was born Dec. 5, 1922 at Clear
Lake, the son of Evert \'d2Heinie\'d3 and Manilla
Bay (Fromm) Neal. He received his education in the
Clear Lake schools, graduating in 1940.
His hobbies as a youth were photography and
developing his photos, radio and woodworking.
He became and Eagle Scout, was the president of
the Eagle Scout Club and later in life was a Scout
leader.
Keith was employed in the family business, Neal
the Cleaners, until he entered the U.S. Air Force on
Oct. 19, 1942. He spent almost four years stationed
in various parts of the United States, receiving
technical training at the University of Chicago and
Truax Field in Madison, Wis.
He returned home after his military service and
became a partner in the family business.
On May 19, 1950, he married Bernice Heitland at
the United Methodist Church Parsonage, Clear Lake.
In April 1961, the cleaners moved into a new
building at 413 1st Avenue S. and Keith and Bernice
operated it along with their daughter until their
retirement in 1989.
In recent years, Keith enjoyed corresponding with
old friends.
At one time Keith was active in Jaycees, was a
member of the Lions, later a Rotarian, a 50 year
lodge member of the American Legion, and a member of
the Clear Lake United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Bernice Neal, Clear
Lake; one daughter, Karen Neal, Clear Lake; one
sister, Donna Butler and her husband, Don, Thornton,
Iowa; and nine nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Myra
Aileen (York) Eastman
Myra Aileen (York) Eastman, 82, longtime Clear
Lake, Iowa resident, died Saturday, June 7, 1997, at
the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason
City, Iowa.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 10 at
the United Methodist Church in Clear Lake with the
Rev. Fred Lewis officiating. Burial was in the Clear
Lake Cemetery. The Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel
was in charge of arrangements.
The family of Myra Aileen (York) Eastman has
requested that memorial contributions be made to the
United Methodist Church in Clear Lake or to the
Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City, in
her memory.
Myra Aileen (York) Eastman was born on Oct. 9,
1914, in Clear River, Minn., the daughter of Harry
and Emmeline Nettie (Reinhart) York. She attended
and received her education in the Warroad, Minn.
Schools graduating from Warroad High School in 1932,
and began teaching country school at the age of 16.
She graduated from Bemidji State Teachers College in
1938 and taught school in Williams and Staples,
Minn. While teaching in Staples she met her future
husband, Donald Spilman Eastman, and they were
united in marriage on Sept. 20, 1946, and made their
home in Clear Lake. He preceded her in death in
February 1985. Myra was a substitute teacher in
Clear Lake for many years and was also a Brownie
Scout Leader. She also helped her husband, Don, at
the grain elevator during harvest. In more recent
years she had been active in the Methodist Church
Altar Guild, Ruth Circle, Clear Lake Women's Club,
Craft Club, Methodist Lunch Bunch, and the Double F
(Fat Fighters) Club. She was also a member of the
Tina Rebekah Lodge #105, of Clear Lake.
She is survived by her daughter, Miriam Eden and
her husband, Jim, of Mason City, step-daughter,
Millus Charlson of Waterloo, Iowa; a sister, Ada
Gifford Simons of Rosedale, Minn.; a brother, Harold
York of Bemidji, Minn.; a niece, Linda York Bowman
of Bemidji; sister-in-law, Violet White Larson of
Clear Lake; step-grandchildren, Steve Charlson,
Waterloo, Anne Hatoum and her husband, Nassir of
West Des Moines, Iowa, Carolyn Ferry and her
husband, Mark, of Ft. Dodge, Iowa, Susan Charlson,
Ft. Dodge, and Chris and Lori Eden, Brett and Kim
Eden and Jason Eden all of Mason City; as well as
many nieces and nephews and other relatives and
friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents;
parents-in-law, Earl and Annie Eastman; her husband,
Donald Spilman Eastman in February 1985; step-son,
Earl James Eastman; a brother, Alan York;
sisters-in-law, Carroll Baago and Carol York;
brothers-in-law, Clarence Gifford, E. Wesley Simons,
and Robert White Sr.; nephew, Robert White Jr.; and
step-grandson, Scott James Eden.

Honorary pallbearers were all of her many
friends.
Pallbearers were Richard White, Russell White,
Tadley White, Ron White, Jason White, Kim
Pleggenkuhle.
Donald
A. Rice
Donald A. Rice, 74, of Scottsdale, Ariz., died
June 7, 1997 at his residence
Memorial services will be held Thursday, June 12,
at 10:30 a.m. at Messinger Mortuary Chapel, 7601 E.
Indian School Rd., Scottsdale, Ariz. There will be a
visitation one-half hour before the service.
Born in Auburn, Iowa, Donald moved to Arizona 18
years ago from Iowa. He was a Marine Corps veteran
of World War II. He was retired and had worked for
Air Services International, leasing and maintaining
helicopters.
Donald was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church
and of the American Legion Sipe-Peterson Post #44,
both in Scottsdale, Ariz.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley J. Rice of
Scottsdale; daughters, Linda Rice of Phoenix, Ariz.,
Lu Ann Brown and her husband, Darrell, Spokane,
Wash., Kay C. Zahn and her husband, Jim, Tempe,
Ariz.; sons, D. Steven Rice of Scottsdale, Rusty
Morris and his wife, Judy, Tempe; nine
grandchildren, Justin Roths, Kyle Peterson, Brandon
Rice, Erica Rice, Tyler Zahn, Jamie Zahn, Candace
Morris, Mattison Morris and Eli Brown.

Michael D. Hyde Michael D. Hyde, 36, died Saturday, June 7, 1997
at North Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City,
Iowa.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 11, at
Church of Christ, Fertile, Iowa, with the Rev.
Dennis Ganz officiating. Interment was in the Clear
Lake Cemetery, Clear Lake, Iowa. Fr. John Kramer
officiated.
Michael D. Hyde was born in Mason City, Iowa on
Oct. 30, 1960, the son of Dale and Sheilah (Lynch)
Hyde. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Patrick's
Catholic Church in Clear Lake. He attended Forest
City schools and graduated from Forest City High
School in 1979. he was involved in football and
wrestling and active in 4-H Club during his school
years. Mike enjoyed being outdoors. He had been
working on the family farm south of Fertile and also
worked for other area farmers. He loved horses,
hunting and woodworking. Time spent with his nieces
and nephews was special to Mike. He could always be
counted on to lend a helping hand when needed.
He is survived by his parents, Sheilah Hyde of
Forest City, Iowa, and Dale Hyde of Fertile; two
brothers, Brian Patrick Hyde, Fertile, and Jeffrey
Hyde, Las Vegas, Nev.; four sisters, Delia Hyde,
Laguna Beach, Calif., Donna Rezendes, Niceville,
Fla., and June Lackore and Jamie Hyde, both of
Forest City; and several nieces and a nephew.
He was preceded in death by a sister who died in
infancy, Debra Lee.
Pallbearers were Dean Ouverson, Tom Hyde, Mark
Anderson, Ron Almelien, Marv Vavrik, and Randy
Pederson.
Donald
Marvin Swale
Donald Marvin Swale, 66, died Monday, June 9,
1997.
Funeral services were held Thursday, June 12 at
Burnham-Wood Funeral Home, West Union, Iowa, with
the Rev. Kay Roath officiating. Interment was in
West Union Cemetery.
Donald Marvin Swale, son of Albert and Ethel (Matzenger)
Swale, was born March 13, 1931 at West Union, Iowa.
He was a 1949 graduate of West Union High School.
Don was self-employed for the last 25 years doing
lawn and sidewalk maintenance. Before that he worked
for Bostroms Grocery Store and H & H Food service.
He enjoyed his cats and gardening (always sharing
his garden produce), liked visiting about the West
Union people and knew a lot about the history of
local families. Don enjoyed his nieces and nephews,
was generous with his family and shared what he had
with friends and relatives.
He is survived by two brothers, Ralph and his
wife, Sylvia, Clear Lake, Iowa, and Albert, Jr. of
Villa Park, Ill.; one sister, Mary and her husband,
Bernard Hamilton of Victor, Iowa; two nieces and
four nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Madelon M. Mullan
Mrs. Madelon M. Mullan, 88, of Clear Lake, died
Sunday, June 15, 1997 at North Iowa Mercy Health
Center East Campus, Mason City, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday),
June 18, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic
Church, Clear Lake, with the Msgr. Joseph J.
Slepicka officiating. Interment will be in Clear
Lake Cemetery, Clear Lake. A scriptural wake was
held Tuesday, June 17 at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial
Chapel.
Madelon was born Oct. 16, 1908 in Sheffield,
Iowa, the daughter of Ruben and Maude (Ormrod)
Esslinger. She graduated from Sheffield High School
in 1926 and then attended Hamilton Business College,
Mason City.
Madelon worked at Harry Mason Ford Garage in
Clear Lake, as a bookkeeper for two years then
joined her parents in operating the Lions Cafe in
Clear Lake for two years.
On June 23, 1931 she married Francis (Frank)
Mullan at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mason City.
She was the bookkeeper at Esslinger-Mullan Farm
Implement and helped her husband operate the
business until 1955.
She enjoyed cooking, gardening, raising flowers,
doing ceramics, playing 500, traveling, watching the
Lawrence Welk show, going north fishing, and the
Clear Lake Senior Citizens. She was a member of St.
Patrick's Catholic Church, Clear Lake.
She is survived by two sons, Don Mullan and his
wife, Marcia, Bella Vista, Ark., and Terry Mullan
and his wife, Nancy, Clear Lake; one sister-in-law,
Kathryn Mullan, Mason City; four grandchildren,
Kevin Mullan, Denver, Colo., Scott Mullan, San
Francisco Calif., Mark Mullan, Tempe, Ariz., and
Monty Mullan, Brooklyn Park, Minn.; two
step-children, Jason Dasch, Des Moines, Iowa, and
Brenda Dasch, Clear Lake; and three
great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband
in 1993; and one infant sister.
Fred
F. Hollatz Jr.
Fred F. Hollatz Jr., 91, of Clear Lake, died
Monday, June 16, 1997 at the Oakwood Care Center.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 19,
at 11 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church, rural
Garner, with the Rev. Carl Hedberg officiating.
Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, rural
Garner.
Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at
Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St.,
and one hour prior to services on Thursday at the
church.
Fred F. Hollatz Jr. was born May 1, 1906, on the
family farm near Clear Lake, the son of Fred Hollatz
Sr. and Mary (Manthei) Hollatz.
He was baptized in 1906 and reaffirmed the faith
of his baptism through confirmation in 1921 at St.
John's Lutheran Church, rural Garner.
He attended and received his elementary education
in the Grant Township school system and attended St.
John's Lutheran Church, rural Garner.
On May 1, 1926 he was united in marriage to Flora
Hansen at St. John's Lutheran Church, rural Garner.
She preceded him in death in 1972.
During his life, Fred worked for Williams
Furniture and funeral home.
He also owned and operated a neighborhood grocery
store in Clear Lake.
During World War II, Fred and Flo lived in Los
Angeles, Calif., where he worked at a civil defense
factory.
He also worked for Ward's Funeral Home until his
retirement.
After his retirement he opened a furniture repair
and reupholster shop in his home in Clear Lake.
Fred enjoyed fishing, playing cards and visiting
with his many friends.
He was a lifelong member of St. John's Lutheran
Church, rural Garner, and was a member of the Clear
Lake Senior Citizens.
He is survived by a sister-in-law, Dorothy Hansen
of Clear lake; five nieces, Margaret Seitel of Santa
Monica, Calif., Darlene Jacot and her husband,
Robert of St. Ansgar, Norma Jean Gobeli and her
husband, Daryl of Mason City, Pat Davis of Garden
Grove, Calif., and Lucille Hersey and her husband,
Jerry, of Issaquah, Wash; three nephews, Bob Hansen
of Minneapolis, Minn., Harold Hansen of Shakopee,
Minn., and Gordon Bruchner of Anacortes, Wash.; as
well as other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife; he parents;
an infant daughter, Lois; and four brothers,
William, Walter, Adolph and Arthur Hollatz..
