Florence Walker
Florence Elverda Walker, 93, of Mediapolis, Iowa, died Saturday, Dec. 21, 1996
at the Community Care of America of Mediapolis. Funeral services were held
Tuesday, Dec. 24 at Hagele and Honts Funeral Home, Mediapolis, with the Rev.
Judith Shields officiating. Interment was at the Kossuth
Cemetery. A general memorial has been established in her name.
Florence Walker was born Jan. 11, 3 1903 at Joslin, Ill., the daughter of John
and Amanda (Letsch) Johnson. On Dec. 24, 1931 she married Rothel A. Walker at
Barstow, Ill. He died May 10, 1994. She taught school for 32 years in Des Moines
County rural schools including Yarmouth, Huron, and Kingston. She was a member
of the Iowa and National Retired Teachers Association, a member of the Iowa
State Education Association, member of the White Star Chapter of O.E.S. #388 of
Mediapolis, the Sunshine Club, a member of the Kingston United Methodist Church
and the United Methodist Women.
She is survived by one daughter, Dianne Woodard, Clear Lake, Iowa; one son,
William (Bill) Walker, Mediapolis; two grandsons and six great-grandchildren;
one brother, Millard Johnson, Morning Sun, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one brother; and two sisters.
Music was provided by Korkee Carruthers.
Pallbearers were Robert Blooming, Johnny Johnson, Jim Johnson, Mick Johnson,
Michael Kennedy and Dennis Kennedy.

Francis J. “Cy” Ungs, Ventura,
Iowa died Thursday, Dec. 26, 1996 at St. Mary’s Hospital, Rochester, Minn.
Memorial services were held Monday, Dec. 30 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church,
Clear Lake, with Msgr. Joseph J. Slepicka officiating.
Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, was in charge of services.
The body was cremated and inurnment will take place at a later date in Clear
Lake Cemetery.
Francis was born on a farm near North Washington, Iowa on Sept. 10, 1922, the
son of Michael and Elizabeth (Nee Raush) Ungs. He was baptized and confirmed in
the Catholic faith at Immaculate Conception Church in North Washington. He
attended grade school and graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in
North Washinsrthn
Francis enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served for the duration of World War II.
He also attended Northwestern University, earning a B.A. degree in business
administration.
While residing and working in Des Moines, Iowa he married Carrol Bartz. Prior to
retirement in 1980, Francis was the general manager of Forest City Industries
for 21 years.
He enjoyed reading, playing cards, fishing and golfing and was an avid carver of
water fowl.
He is survived by his wife, Carrol, Ventura; a daughter, Cheri Grauer and her
husband, Ted, of Van Meter, Iowa; a son, Curtis Ungs and his wife, Laurie, West
Des Moines, Iowa; granddaughter, Katelyn Ungs; grandsons Ben Grauer and Casey
Ungs; three sisters, Mildred Nosbisch and her husband Vic, Edna Long and Luella
Bentz, all of New Hampton, Iowa; and a brother, Clarence Ungs and his wife,
Mary, of New Hampton.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one infant brother, Clement
Ungs; two brothers, Edward and Reynold Ungs; and one sister, Elaine
Gates.

Fletcher
Mrs. Marjorie R. (Wubben) Fletcher, 85, of
Clear Lake, Iowa, formerly of Mason City, Iowa, died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 1996 at
her son’s home in Clear Lake.
Funeral services were held Friday, Dec. 27, at the Ward-Van Slyke
Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Herbert Shaffer officiating of
Grace United Methodist Church, Mason City. Interment was in the
Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, Iowa.

Marjorie was born May 6, 1911 in LeRoy, Minn., the daughter of Hiram and Cecil
Campbell. She married Simon Andrew Wubben and they lived in the Mason City area.
After his death in 1956 she married Bob Fletcher in 1965. He also, preceded her
in death.
Marjorie moved to Clear Lake in July 1995 to live with her son. She was an avid
country western music fan, a member of George Jones fan club, avid Cub and
Hawkeye fan and was a member of First Baptist Church, Mason City.
She is survived by two sons, Larry Wubben and his wife, Ramona, Hudson, Wis.,
and Jerry Wubben and his wife, Elenor, Clear Lake; a twin sister, Margarite
Beisel, Mason City; one sister-in-law, Alma Campbell, Mason City; and several
nieces and nephews; 12 grandchildren; 14 great- grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; one daughter, Phyllis L.
Salyers; two infant sons, Dickie and Jackie Wubben; and one son, Si Jr. Wubben.
Soloist Mary Meske was accompanied by organist Mary Jane Reynolds.
Honorary pallbearers were Debby Lancaster, Donald Sampson, Randy Trost, Tamala
Wubben.
Pallbearers were Paul Wubben, Andy Wubben, Kenya Trost, Dale
Wubben, Mark Wubben, Mary Wubben.

Clyde E. Neel
Clyde E. Neel, 68, of Clear Lake, Iowa, died
Tuesday, Dec. 31, 1996 at
North Iowa Mercy Health Center East Campus.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 4 at the Clear Lake United Methodist
Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Fred Lewis officiating. Burial was in Clear
Lake Cemetery. An dependent Order of Odd Fellows service was held Friday, Jan.
3. The Ward Van-Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, was in charge of
arrangements.

Clyde E. Neel was born March 27, 1928, in Humboldt, Iowa, the son of
Cecil B. and Leona (Hunt) Neel. He married Shirley Bacon on Feb. 5, 1954
in Clear Lake and found joy in each of their 43 years of marriage.
Clyde grew up in the Mason City, Iowa, area and attended school in Clear Lake.
He served in the U.S. Army During the Korean War. After his marriage, he worked
at the Clear Lake Bakery for 13 years and then he was custodian at Lincoln
Elementary school for 18 years until retiring in 1990. After retirement, he and
his wife spent their winters in Arizona and Texas.
Clyde was an avid collector and enjoyed going to auctions. He enjoyed camping
and being outdoors. He enjoyed being with his family, especially his
grandchildren, and took pleasure visiting with friends.
He was a member of the Clear Lake United Methodist Church and the IOOF Lodge
#187.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Neel, Clear Lake; four children, Cathy Neel,
Clear Lake, Steven Neel and his wife, Bonnie, Hinckley, Minn,, David Neel and
his wife, Lori, Mason City, Nancy McCoid and her husband, Mike, Manly, Iowa;
five grandchildren, Alaina, Benjamin and Jared Neel, all of Hinckley, and
Danielle and Jessica McCoid, both of Manly; three sisters, Doris HoIm and her
husband, Johnie, Grand Meadow, Minn., Ina Neel, Sacramento, Calif., and Della
Swift, Richmond, Calif.; five brothers, Dale Neel and his wife, Betty, Manly,
Kent Neel, Mesa, Ariz., John Neel and his wife, Sharon, Chariton, Iowa, Harvey
Neel and his wife, Mary Lou, Scarville, Iowa, and Delmer Neel and his wife,
Vonnie, Hanover Park, Ill.; two brothers-in-law, Ray Headley, Fountain, Colo.,
and Keith Coates, Apache Junction, Colo., and many nieces, nephews and other
family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Ruth Coates and Vida

Vida Neel Headley, 74, of Fountain, Cob., died Monday, Dec. 30, 1996 at the
Hospice Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 2, 1997 in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Burial was in Memorial Gardens.
Vida Neel Headley was born Dec. 19, 1922 in Livermore, the daughter of C. B.
(Cecil) and Leona Hunt Neel. She graduated from Clear Lake High School, Clear
Lake, Iowa, in 1940 and from the St. Joseph Mercy College of Nursing in Sioux
City, Iowa in 1945. Vida worked as a private duty nurse and worked the last 11
years before her retirement at the Union Printers Home in Colorado Springs, Cob.
On Sept. 22, 1949 she was married to Raymond Headley of Norton County, Kan.
She is survived by her husband, Ray, Fountain; two daughters, Cynthia of
Fountain, and Marcia of Allen, Texas; two sons, Ray Jr. of Swink, Colo. and
Clifford, Fountain; three sisters, Doris Holm, of Grand Meadow, Minn., and Della
Neel Swift of Richmond, Calif.; six brothers, Dale Neel, Manly, Iowa, Clyde
Neel, Clear Lake, Kent Neel, Mesa, Ariz., John Neel, Chariton, Iowa, Harvey
Neel, Scarville, Iowa, and Delmer Neel of Hanover Park, Ill.

Patricia (Tice) Reams, 64, of Phoenix, Ariz., died Wednesday, Jan.
1, 1997 at Phoenix.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 7 at Ward-Van Slyke
Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, Iowa, with the Rev. Larry Squier of the Clear Lake
Christian Church officiating.
Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, Iowa.

Patricia (Tice) Reams was born Feb. 29, 1932 at Clear Lake, the
daughter of Charles W. and Mollie (Schwartz) Tice. She grew up and received her
education in Clear Lake, graduating from Clear Lake High School in 1950.
On June 25, 1950 she married Gilbert Reams at the Clear Lake
Methodist Church. She was employed as an accounting clerk for Sears in
Burnsville, Minn., and then in Phoenix for 20 years.
She is survived by her husband, Gilbert Reams, Phoenix; two
daughters, Karen Plaman and her husband, Ron, Eagan, Minn., Rhonda Anderson and
her husband, Bradley, Phoenix; one son, Lon Reams and his wife, Jean, Litchfield
Park, Ariz.; four grandchildren, Robert Plaman, Eagan, Nicole Anderson, Phoenix,
Mollie Reams and Jeffrey Reams, Litchfield; two sisters, Vivian Kraft,
Northwood, Iowa, Reva Peters, Swaledale, Iowa; three brothers, Gayle Tice,
Garner, Iowa, Harvey Tice, Birmingham, A1a.; Donald Tice and his wife, Ruth,
Clear Lake; one sister-in-law, Myrtle Tice, Omaha, Neb.; and many nieces and

Leonard Ralph Kubly, 77, of Clear Lake, Iowa, died Wednesday, Jan. 1, 1997 at
the IOOF Home, Mason City, Iowa.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 4 at Zion Lutheran
Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Kermit Roisen and the Rev. Gary Kubly
officiating. Burial was in Clear Lake Cemetery.
The Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, was in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be given in memory of Leonard R. Kubly to Zion Lutheran Church,
Clear Lake, or to the IOOF Home, Mason City.
Leonard Ralph Kubly was born Aug. 7, 1919 on a farm at rural Luverne, Iowa, the
son of F. Wilbert and Marie (Kraft) Kubly. He was baptized and confirmed at
Luverne.
In 1941, Leonard married LaVon Haaland in Blue Earth, Minn. Leonard and LaVon
farmed at rural Garner until 1974 when they retired to Clear Lake.
He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake.
He is survived by his wife, LaVon Kubly, Clear Lake; two sons, Ronald Kubly,
Denison, Texas, and Gary Kubly and his wife, Patricia, Granite Falls, Minn.; one
daughter, Deanne Kubly, Shoreview, Minn.; six grandchildren, Matthew, Jason,
Aaron, Andrew, Erin and Jenna Kubly; one great-grandchild, Jerod Kubly; two
brothers, Orville Kubly, St. James, Minn., Marvin Kubly, Crystal, Minn.; one
sister, Velva Haugen, Glenwood, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Mabel Ramsvig.

Riley John Yoder, son of Charles and Dora Ann DeLaFuente Yoder
of Kalona was stillborn Friday, Jan. 3, 1997 at University Hospital in Iowa
City.
Surviving with his parents are a sister, Morgan; grandparents, Joe and Josephine
DeLaFuente of Clear Lake, Iowa and J. Carl and Laverta Yoder of Weliman;
great-grandparents, Carmen Osegaro of Mason City, Iowa, and Daniel H. Miller of
Kalona.
Graveside services were held Monday, Jan. 6 at the Holy Trinity Catholic
Cemetery in Richmond with the Rev. Scott Lemaster officiating. Yoder-Powell
Funeral Home in Kalona was in charge of arrangements.

Mary Makar
Mary F. Makar, 83, of Laramie,
Wyo., died Thursday, Jan. 9, 1997 at her home.
Funeral Liturgy was held Saturday, Jan. 11 at St. Paul’s Newman Center with
the Rev. Fr. Roger W. Schmit, OSB, officiating.
Mary was born May 3, 1913 in Chicago, Ill., the daughter of James and Marie
(Weiss) Vyziblo. She was raised and received her education in Chicago.
On Sept. 3, 1934 she married Edward F. Makar in Chicago. They continued to
live in Chicago where she was president of the PTA for several years. She
also was founder of the Women’s Club and a past president of the club. In
1951 they moved to South Bend, Ind., where they operated the Palais Royale
Ballroom and owned and operated the Ed-Mar Catering Service.
They later built the Palais D’or Restaurant which they operated. She
was a member of the Christ Child Society and the Progress Club in South
Bend. She and her husband worked in ballroom management and in 1972
moved to Clear Lake and were owner and managers of the Surf Ballroom. In
1974 they moved to California, moving to Louisville, Ky. in 1985 where she
lived until 1991 when she came to Laramie.
Mary was also a volunteer at the Humana Hospitals and medical records in
Louisville, Ky., California, and Laramie. After coming to Laramie she
volunteered at Ivinson Memorial Hospital. She was a member of St. Paul’s
Newman Center, the Eppson Center of Seniors, and the Laramie Garden Club.
She is survived by two daughters, Yvonne Middleton and Naomi Heitzrnan, both
of Laramie; three grandchildren, .Joseph Heitzman Ill and Mark E. Heitzman,
both of Louisville, and Yvonne Ratliff of Laramie; five great-grandchildren;
and a brother James Bodei of Arlington Heights, Ill.
She was pre death by her parents; and her husband, Edward in 1983.

Dorothy Burns
Dorothy A. Burns, 80, of Clear Lake, Iowa, died Monday, Jan. 6, 1997 at
North Iowa Mercy Health Center East Campus.
Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 10 at Zion Lutheran Church, Clear
Lake, with the Rev. Dean Hess officiating. Following funeral services,
cremation took place and a memorial service will be held in Colorado at a
later date.
The Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, was in charge of
arrangements.
Memorials may be given to the Dorothy A. Burns Memorial Fund, which will be
directed toward the Adult Day Health Center, Mason City, Iowa.
Dorothy A. Burns was born Nov. 17, 1916 at Davenport, Iowa, the daughter of
John and Bertha (Schmidt) Woehlk. She grew up and attended school in
Davenport.
She married Eugene F. Burns in 1937 at the Little Brown Church at Nashua,
Iowa. Dorothy was very involved in school and church activities when her
children were growing up, participating in Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts and the
PTA, serving as president.
She enjoyed cooking, sewing, watching and feeding the animals in her yard.
She loved her grandchildren dearly and was very interested in their various
activities.
Dorothy especially loved the cabin she shared with her family on the Grand
Mesa in Colorado and spent some of her happiest times there. She filled the
cabin front with native wild flowers.
She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake. She was
a honorary member of the Peace Circle and served in the past as its
president. She was also a member of the Altar of Guild.
She is survived by her husband, Eugene F. Burns, Clear Lake; three
children, Ron Burns and his wife Brenda, Dublin Ohio; Dennis Burns
and his Wife, Barbara, Dexter, Ore., Wendy Keen and her husband, Will,
Mason City; grandchildren, Jon, Jeff, Roddy and Tom Burns, Heather
Preston, Briceanne Bailey, Nancy Frame, Brent Bailey, Johannah Keil,
Korenza Burns and Jennifer, Aimee and Nathan Keen; one brother, Johnny
Woehik, Chicago, Ill.

Ryan was born July 15, 1974 in Albert Lea, Minn, the son of Reuben and Linda
(Villarreal) Escherich Jr. He was baptized at the Scarville Norwegian Synod
Lutheran Church Scarville Ryan graduated from Clear Lake High School in
1992, North Iowa Area Community College in 1994 and was attending Iowa State
University, Ames, Iowa. He was active in chorus, school band, plays, a
enjoyed his trip to France with his high school French
class. While attending NIACC he was in Quodlibet. Ryan enjoyed collection
comics, was a Dallas Cowboys fan, and enjoyed attending Billy Joel and Elton
John concerts in Ames.
He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake.
He is survived by his parents, Reuben and Linda Escherich, Clear
Lake; a brother, Robert Ryan Escherich, Clear Lake; maternal
grandparents, Albert and Isabel Villarreal, Albert Lea, Minn.; paternal

Rhonda Renee Wood Smith, 35, of Garner Iowa died Wednesday,
Jan. 15 1997 at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center East Campus, Mason City,
Iowa.
Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 20 at the Ward-Van
Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with the Rev. John W. Hemann and Chaplain
Rosie Schlueter officiating.
Interment was in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City. The family
suggests memorials to Hospice of North Iowa or the Rhonda Wood Smith
Memorial Fund.
Rhonda was born Feb. 20, 1961 in Mason City the daughter of Ronald K and
Barbara L (Anderson) Wood She graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1979
Rhonda worked for NIACOG in Mason City until going to work for Simmering and
Cory lnc. in Clear Lake as a municipal consultant.
Rhonda has lived in Garner the last 16 years, where she was on the city
council and was mayor of Garner the last three years. She was the first
female mayor of Garner. Rhonda enjoyed golfing, reading, debating, people
and most of all, her children She was a member of Iowa League of
Municipalities, selective service board, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, Garner,
Garner PTO and was a former member of Crown Jewel Committee, Garner.
She is survived by two children, Ronald David Smith and Taylor Louise Smith,
both of Garner; her parents, Ronald K. and Barbara L. Wood, Clear Lake;
three brothers, Steven Wood and his special friend, Karla, Boise, Idaho,
Keith Wood and his wife, Leslie, Mason
City, and David Wood and his wife, Shannon, Clear Lake; maternal
grandmother, Mabel Anderson Francis, Osage, Iowa; paternal
grandmother, Frances L. Wood, Hamburg, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Melvin S.
Anderson; paternal grandfather, Willis Wood; and one sister, Debra
Louise Wood.

Susan J. Baker, 65, died Friday, Jan. 10, 1997 at her home in Alexandria,
Va., of kidney cancer.
Funeral services were held at Post Chapel, Ft. Myers, Va., on Thursday, Jan.
16 with burial at Arlington National Cemetery.
Susan J. Baker was born May 30, 1931 in Mason City, Iowa, the daughter of
Edward R. and Vivian Oakes Boyle. She grew up in Clear Lake and graduated
from Clear Lake High School. Susan attended the College of Saint Catherine
in St. Paul, Minn. and graduated from the University of Iowa in 1953 where
she was a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority.
On Feb. 6, 1954 she married Frank H. Baker. She first came to the
Washington, D.C. area with her husband in 1959 and maintained a home there
since 1967. She lived in Germany for eight years While her husband was on
duty with the Army there.
From 1980 until the early 90’s she was a real estate agent with both
Merkli McGuire and WJD Associates. She was active in collecting and selling
antiques. Since 1984 she had owned an antique shop in Fredericksburg, Va.
Susan was a volunteer docent at the Woodlawn Plantation since 1991.
She received the National Trust for Historic Preservation President
Award for outstanding service.
She was a long time member of the Signal Officers Wives Club and in 197 was
involved in starting the Signal Ball, which has been an annual even since.
Susan was a member of the St Louis Catholic Church in Alexandria.
She is survived by her husband o 42 years, retired Army Brigadier General
Frank H. Baker of Alexandria, one daughter, Barbara G. Wyatt of Fort Worth,
Texas; two sons, Bradley R. an Marshal F. of Alexandrià; five grandchildren;
her mother Vivian Boyle, Rochester, Minn.; and sister, Mrs. Judy Stout,
Prior Lake Minn.

Mrs. June Carr, 82, of Clear Lake, Iowa, died Monday, Jan.20, l997 at the
North Iowa Mercy Health Center East Campus, Mason City, Iowa.

Nauss
Fred Nauss, 94, Estherville, Iowa, died Thursday, Jan: 16, 1997 at the Holy
Family Hospital, Estherville.
Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 20 at the First Presbyterian Church,
Estherville, with the Pastor Mark Gabbard
officiating. Burial was at East Side Cemetery, Estherville.
Fred Nauss was born April 9, 1902 in Iona, Minn., the son of Herman
Frederick Nauss and Ann Marie Ehrhardt Haffer. He received his education in
the rural country schools.
On Oct. 10, 1929 he married Elvira “Vera” C. Ritterholz in Estherville.
After their marriage, the couple lived and farmed in rural Estherville. Vera
died March 9, 1990. After Vera’s death, Fred lived with his daughter,
Juanita in Clear Lake, for four years. Fred had
been a resident of the Rosewood Manor Care Center in Estherville.
Fred was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Estherville.
He is survived by a son, Jerry Nauss and his wife, Sherry,
Estherville; daughter, Juanita Leslie and her husband, Walt, Clear Lake;
eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Edward Nauss,
Estherville.
He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Vera; three brothers,
Willie, Albert, Carl; two sisters, Ida and Rose Daniels Graff.

Archie M Olsen
Archie M Olsen, 86, of Mason City, Iowa, died Thursday, Jan. 16, 1997 at the
Good Shepherd Care Center, Mason City.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 18, at Ward-Van Slyke
Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with the Chaplain Kathy Graves of Hospice of
North Iowa officiating. Interment was in the Clear Lake Cemetery on Monday,
Jan. 20. The family suggests memorials to the Archie M. Olsen memorial fund.
Archie was born Nov. 14, 1910 at the Olson homestead farm near Clear Lake,
the son of Arne and Minnie (Golien) Olson. He received his education in
rural schools. He married Elizabeth Bitker in 1932. He lived in Mason City
and the Clear Lake area all of his life where he worked many years at the
Hanford Hotel and Bergo’s. He
married Rachael Curtis in 1951. Archie enjoyed gardening and dancing.
He is survived by a special friend, Ethel Jacot, Mason City; two
daughters, Rosemary Ward and her husband, Chan, Clear Lake, and Rhonda
Williams, Waterloo, Iowa; one son, David Rockow, Columbus, Ohio; stepson,
Glen Curtis, Northwood, Iowa; two sisters, Ameila Neil, Forest City, Iowa
and Nell Smith and her
husband, Erv, Clear Lake; one brother Melvin Olson, Mason City; five
grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wives Elizabeth and Rachael; and
one sister, Alma Tinkham.
Pallbearers were David Parks, George Wilson, Doug Ward, Scott
Wilson.

Eva Pearl Bowlin
Mrs. Eva Pearl Bowlin, ‘90, Clear L Iowa, died Sunday, Jan.
19, 1997 at The North Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City, Iowa.
Funeral services will beheld today (Wednesday), Jan. 22, at 1:30 p.m. at the
Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with the Rev. David Gobeli
officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.
The family suggests memorials to the Eva Bowlin Memorial fund.
Eva was born Feb. 26,1906 in rural Burchinal, Iowa, the daughter of Fred and
Ida (Barlow) Best. She married Harry H. Bowlin at the Little Brown Church in
Nashua, Iowa. They moved to Clear Lake to live in 1951. While living in
Clear Lake she did babysitting jobs and cleaned houses.
Eva enjoyed crocheting, raising flowers and was noted for her independence.
She is survived by her daughter, Viola Christenson, Clear Lake; three
grandchildren, Joe Medlin and his wife, Sherry, Altoona, Iowa; Julie
Rubalcava and her husband, John, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Connie Strom and
her husband, Harry, New Sharon, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Joe Rubalcava,
Jason Rubalcava, Ben
Medlin, John Medlin, Bobbie Jo Medlin, Jennifer Buren and Julie
Buren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, three brothers, Floyd,
Freddie and Laurence Best; three sisters, Leila Rowe, Leora Robinson and
Doris Walls.

Leland Hubert Kelly
Leland Hubert Kelly, 69, of Clear Lake, died
Friday, Jan. 24, 1997
at North Iowa Mercy Health Center’s East Campus, Mason City, Iowa.
A celebration of life service was held Monday, Jan. 27 at the Clear Lake United
Methodist Church with the Rev. Fred Lewis officiating. Ward-Van Slyke Colonial
Chapel, Clear Lake, was in charge of arrangements. There was no visitation. The
body was cremated and burial will take place at a later date.
The family suggests memorials be given to the Leland H. Kelly Memorial Fund.
Leland was born May 14, 1927 in Burr Oak, Iowa, the son of Hugh
Joseph and Verlie May (Pierce) Kelly.
He attended school at St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Mason City.
He served in the United States Army during World War II in France. After the
service, he returned to work in Spencer, Iowa. He moved to Mason City and was
employed at the Brand Cemetery. He later worked for Thermogas in Mason City as a
driver- salesman for 37 years until his retirement in 1987.
Leland was an avid sportsman who loved to play pool and golf. He was a devoted
Notre Dame fan.
He is survived by his wife, Lois, of Clear Lake; three children, Ann Lovell,
Osceola, Iowa, Kevin 0 Kelly and his wife, Jeni, Plymouth, Min and Erin
Kelly-Day and her husband, Tim, of Ames, Iowa; his -mother-in-law, Dorothy
Pedersen, Clear Lake; five brothers,
Parnell Joseph Kelly, Vere Eugene Kelly and his wife, Rose, and Larry Paul Kelly
and his wife, Janet, all of Mason City, Robert Francis Kelly and his wife,
Ardith, Charles City, Iowa, and Hugh Allen Kelly, Marshalltown, Iowa; a sister,
Vivian Marie Bell, Mason City; and two grandchildren, Coleman Lee Kelly and Wade
Michael Kelly.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Virginia Kelly and Dorothy
Sprinkle.

Virginia Lee Roach
Virginia Lee Roach, 75, formerly of Clear
Lake, Iowa, died Monday, Jan. 20, 1997 at the Good Shepherd Nursing Home in
Mason City, Iowa.
Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 24, at the Ward-Van Slyke
Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dean Hess officiating. Burial was in
Clear Lake Cemetery.
The family suggests memorials to the Alzheimer’s Association.
Virginia was born Aug. 30, 1921 in Britt, Iowa, the daughter of Daniel and
Frieda (Tegtmeyer) Dye.
On July 5, 1949 she married Charles Roach in Albert Lea, Minn. Charles preceded
her in death on April 22, 1973. Although the couple resided in several
Midwestern states while Charles was employed with construction on the pipeline,
they always regarded Clear Lake as their home.
Virginia worked for E.F. Johnson in Clear Lake and later Sperry Univac until her
retirement in 1983.
Her hobbies included reading, gardening and refinishing furniture. She also
enjoyed the lake.
June was a resident of the Good Shepherd for six years with Alzheimer’s Disease.
She is survived by a daughter, Rebecca Schneider, and her husband, Mark, of St.
Paul, Minn.; a son, Douglas Jacobson, Davenport, Iowa; a brother, Clayton “Bud”
Dye” and his wife, Jean, of Clear Lake; a half-brother, Keith• Dye and his wife,
Vivian, California; a - sister, Dorothea Miller, Hemet, Calif.; four
grandchildren, Ryann Marie Schneider, Matthew Schneider, Chris Jacobson and Eric
Jacobson; and one great-grandchild, Emily Jacobson.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband.

Mary Lee Collins
Mary Lee Collins, 61, of Clear Lake, Iowa,
died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 1997 at her home. Funeral services were held Monday, Jan.
27 at First Covenant Church, Mason City, with the Rev. Richard G. Murray
officiating. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, Mason City, was in charge of arrangements.
Mary Lee Collins was born Aug.24, 1935, in Crawford, W.Va., daughter of Wert and
Violet (McCray) Smith. She married Louis Collins on May 9, 1970, in Minneapolis,
Minn.
Mary grew up in rural West Virginia, and graduated from high school in Weston,
W.Va. She graduated from North Central Bible College in Minneapolis, Minn. with
a degree in Christian education.
She worked at K-Mart for six years and for the past few years, she worked as a
dietary aide for Good Samaritan Nursing Home, Forest City, Iowa. Mary loved
sports and was an avid Cubs fan.
She was an active member of First Covenant Church serving on the church council
and singing in the choir.
She’ is survived by her husband, Louis Collins, Clear Lake; two sons, Gregory
Collins and his wife, Barbara, Buffalo Center, Iowa, and David Collins, a
student at Iowa State University, Ames; one grandson, Caleb Collins, Buffalo
Center; four sisters, Jean Lowther, Wildcat, W.Va., Virginia Ellis, Delaware,
Madeline Eckes, Weston, W.Va., and Elsie Stearman, Delaware; and two brothers,
Kemp Smith, Bucchannon, W.Va., and Bill Smith, Alexandria, Va.;
and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Gayle Smith.

James Dean True, 18, of Nora Springs, Iowa,
died Sunday, Jan. 26, 1997 at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center East Campus,
Mason City, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday), Jan. 29, at 1:30 p.m. at St.
Luke’s Lutheran Church, Nora Springs, with the Rev. Ruth Hanson and Rev. Jim
Gochenouer officiating.
Interment will be in Park Cemetery, Nora Springs. The family suggests memorials
to the James Dean True memorial fund.
James was born June 26, 1978 in Iowa City, the son of James E. and Jennie
(Roethier) True. James attended school at Sheffield-Chapin Meservey-Thornton.
James enjoyed roller blading, skate boarding, snow boarding, biking
and fishing with his grandfather.
He is survived by his mother, Jennie and her husband, Donnie Blau,
Meservey, Iowa; his father, James E. True, Colorado Springs, Colo.; one brother,
Cody True, Fort Dodge, Iowa; two sisters, Krystal and Melissa Blau, Meservey; a
maternal grandmother,
Phyllis Roethler, Nora Springs; paternal grandparents, Gordon and
Linda True, Clear Lake; maternal great-grandmother, Eleanore Jackson, Mason
City; an uncle Steven Roethier, Houston, Texas; and aunt, Debbie Roethier,
Grants, New Mexico, several great uncles and aunts.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather Vincent Roethier; great
grandparents, Lyle and Miriam Schwieger and his special beloved friend Amanda

Mrs. June Alice (Young) Carr, 82, Clear Lake,
Iowa, died Sunday, Jan. 20, 1997 at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center East
Campus, Mason City, Iowa.
Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 24, 1997 at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial
Chapel, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Fred Lewis officiating. Interment was in
Bohemian Cemetery, Plymouth, Iowa. The family suggests memorials to Hospice of
North Iowa.
June was was born June 9, 1914 in rural Nora Springs, Iowa in Mitchell County,
the daughter of Warren Edward and Bessie Leota (Ashmore) Young. She graduated in
1932. She married Clarence William Carr on Aug. 29, 1947 at the Little Brown
Church, Nashua, Iowa.
June worked at Salsbury Lab in Charles City, Iowa. She was known as a
dressmaker.
She is survived by her daughter, Alice Ann Parr, Fremont, Calif.; two sisters,
Sadie Deets, Clear Lake, and Erna Jacobson of Minneapolis, Minn.; as well as
many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and son-in-law, Douglas Parr.
Pallbearers were Jeff Deets, Mike Deets, T.R. Sammis, Doug Deets, Nathan Deets,
Dan Deets.
