Sarah Neiman

Sarah Neiman, age 56, of Mission Township, Minn., died Sunday, Nov. 30, 1997 at her home.


Services were held Saturday, Dec. 6, 1997 at 3 p.m. at the ELCA Lutheran Church in Crosslake, Minn. with the Rev. Richard Osness officiating. Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter, Minn. was in charge.

Sarah Neiman was born April 13, 1941 in Austin, Minn., daughter of Beldon and Olive (Esse) Keck. She graduated from high school in Rochester, Minn. in 1959. She was married to Paul Chaffee in Austin.  She moved to Mankato with her husband. They moved to Hunington Beach, Calif. where she was a homemaker for a few years. They then moved to Plain View, Minn. for a few years. They then moved to Clear Lake, Iowa.

She was married to Dr. Edward L. Chappell in Clear Lake in 1968. She was active in civic affairs in Clear Lake. Her husband died in 1975.  She remarried David Neiman in 1976. They moved to Mission Township in 1980. She was the first female firefighter in Minnesota, where she specialized in arson in Mission Township. Sarah was a co-founder of the Mission Township First Responder Team. She was vice-president of the Area Lake Association. She was instrumental in revitalizing the  Crow Wing Mounted Patrol. She was an honorary Crow Wing County Deputy Sheriff. She was affiliated with the Mid Minnesota Women’s Center for 13 years where she was a dedicated volunteer and employee. Sarah enjoyed cooking and entertaining her family and friends, reading, music, gardening, animals, bird watching and environmental issues.

Sarah is survived by three sons, Bradley Chaffee of Watertown, NY, Brian Chaffee of Cheney, Wash., Bruce Chaffee of Naytahwaushi, Minn. and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward, her parents, and one brother.

Marilyn Margaret Golien

Marilyn Margaret Golien, 52, Clear Lake, Iowa, died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 1997 at her home.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 6, 1997 at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church, Clear Lake, Iowa with the Rev. Fred Lewis officiating. Interment was in the Clear Lake Cemetery, Clear Lake, Iowa.

The Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, was in charge. The family suggests memorials to the Marilyn Margaret Golien Memorial Fund.

Marilyn was born July 22, 1945 in Waverly, Iowa the daughter of Howard and Gertrude (Schoentag) Parmely. She graduated from Lamont High School in 1963, and then attended Mason City Junior College and Buena Vista College.

On June 18, 1966 she was united in marriage to Leslie Golien at the United Methodist Church in Lamont, Iowa. The couple lived in Marshalltown, Iowa for six months before moving to Muscatine, Iowa in 1967, where Marilyn worked for the Bandad Corp. as a bookkeeper. They moved to Clear Lake in 1970.

In 1980, Marilyn started an upholstery business out of her house and made artistic pillows for people. In 1985, she was employed by Quality Quick Print and Simmering-Cory. She was the bookkeeper, and later manager, of Milepost 194 Truck Stop. She later worked at Neal Cleaners and Hewitt Wholesale.

Marilyn enjoyed gardening, interior decorating, flower arranging and shopping. One of her favorite hangouts was The Hobby Lobby. She especially loved being with her family and having coffee with friends.

She is survived by her husband, Leslie Golien, Clear Lake; a daughter, Michaela Cookman and her husband, Todd, and their two children, Colton and Tanner, Clear Lake; a son, Christopher Golien, Clear Lake, and his special friend, Lisa Johnson, of Cincinnati, Ohio; four sisters, Claudia Morris and her husband, Elgin, of Clear Lake, Carolyn Streicher and her husband, Larr,y of Arlington, Iowa, Joan Wilker and her husband, Jim, of Garnavillo, Iowa, and Debra Sizer and her husband, Jeff, of Ft. Collins, Colo.; a brother, John Parmely and his wife, Betty, of Dundee, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Connie Roloff and her husband, John, of Marietta, Ga; nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; in-laws Maybelle and Lester Golien; and an infant son, Robert Golien.


** Jake P. Funk Jr.

Jake P. Funk Jr., 86, of Manly, Iowa, died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 1997 at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East Campus, Mason City, Iowa.     Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Mason City Baptist Church with the Rev. Jerry Hull officiating. Burial was in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.

Hogen-Bremer Colonial Chapel, Mason City, was in charge.

Jake’s family requests that memorials be directed to the Jake P. Funk Jr. Memorial Fund or to the Mason City Baptist Church, 1805 S Wilson, in his memory.

Jake P. Funk Jr. was born Oct. 11, 1911 at Mason City, the son of Jacob and Louise (Schmidt) Funk.

In 1964, he was united in marriage to Margaret Luna, at the Baptist Church in Albert Lea, Minn.

He was employed by the Armour plant for 48 years and after his retirement there, was employed by the Mason City Police Department as a parking attendant for two and one-half years.

Jake loved playing softball. He entered the River City Softball Hall of Fame in 1993. He also enjoyed watching wrestling and football on television, and reading.

He was a member of the Mason City Baptist Church for 40 years and served as an usher at the church for many years. He also was a member of the Hispanic American Club.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Funk, Manly; one son, Dennis Funk, Santa Rosa, Calif.; five stepchildren, Gloria Fielder and her husband, Jim, Northwood, Iowa; Clarence Mayo and his wife, Denise, Manly; Tony Mayo, Texas; Felix Mayo and his wife, Jolene, Manly; Lucinda Bryant and her husband, Dale, Huxley, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; three step grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; three brothers, Frank Funk and Fritz Funk, both of Mason City; and Philip Funk, Marquette, Mich.; three sisters, Betty Funk, Mason City, Mary Jane Allen and her husband, Jesse, Plymouth, Iowa; Regina Ackerson and her husband, Robert, Waterloo, Iowa; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Jeanette, in 1958; two sons, Jake Funk III and his wife, Connie, and Donald Funk; one sister, Rosa; four brothers, Albert, Herman, Joseph, and Willie Funk.
 


Merlin W. Brinkman

Mr. Merlin W. Brinkman, 64, of Ventura, Iow, died Friday, Dec. 5, 1997. Memorial services were held Monday, Dec. 8, 1997 at the Ventura United Methodist Church, Ventura, with the Rev. David Gobeli officiating. Memorials may be given to the Merlin W. Brinkman memorial fund. Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, was in charge of services.

Merlin was born August 29, 1933 in Klemme, Iowa, the son of Martin and Meta (Baack) Brinkman. He graduated from Klemme High School. Following high school he served in the Army from 1953-1955. After the service he moved back to Klemme and attended Hamilton College and earned a degree in accounting. He worked for Dewey Electric as an accountant.

Merlin married Ina VanBuskirk June 15, 1963 in Goodell, Iowa. He was in the banking business in the area for over 30 years.

Merlin was a member of Ventura United Methodist Church, Ventura.

Merlin is survived by his wife, Ina Brinkman, Ventura; two sons, Jeff Brinkman and his wife, Tricia, Portage, Mich. and Dan Brinkman, at Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa; and one grandson, Lane Brinkman; three brothers, Garland Brinkman and his wife, Karna, Garner, Iowa, Ronald Brinkman and his wife, Alice, Klemme, and Martin Brinkman Jr. and his wife, Lois, Sheffield, Iowa and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Leo.

Organist was Dorothy Schnuelle.


Irene A. Stebbins

Irene A. Stebbins, 64, of Britt, Iowa, died Friday, December 5, 1997, at the Hancock County Hospital in Britt.

According to the wishes of the family, her body was cremated. There will be no services.

The family of Irene A. Stebbins has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Irene A. Stebbins Memorial Fund in her memory.

Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 North 4th Street, Clear Lake, was in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Irene A. Stebbins, was born on August 6, 1933, in Leicester, Mass., the daughter of Wilfred and and Annette (Berthiaume) Barton.

She was united in marriage to Alfred Stebbins. Irene moved to Iowa in 1996, to be closer to her family.

She was a member of the Jehovah Witness in Garner, Iowa, and was a former member of the Palmer Jehovah Witness in Massachusetts.

Survivors include her husband, Alfred Stebbins, of Britt; three children, Debi Schutzer and her husband, Tom, of Britt; John Stebbins and his wife, Francine of Lacota, Iowa, and Laura Wood of Pitchburg, Pa.; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, and one sister.


Mabel Lillian Amundson

Mrs. Mabel Lillian Amundson, 99, formerly of Clear Lake, Iowa died Monday, Dec. 8, 1997 at the Bethany Manor Care Center, Story City, Iowa. Funeral services are pending at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake.


Izetta Lucas Cone

Izetta Lucas Cone, 95, died on Sunday, Dec. 14, 1997 at the Flfth Avenue Healthcare Center in San Rafael, Calif. A resident of California for the past 64 years, Mrs. Cone was born Feb. 6, 1902 in Clear Lake, lowa.

As a teenager, she moved with her parents, Stella Donaldson Lucas and Will Lucas, to Sheridan, Wyo., where her family homesteaded 1,000 acres of dry farm land. There she became a skilled horsewoman, regularly taking 20 mile rides on her family's property.

Mrs. Cone was an accomplished musician and played with her father's five-piece dance combo, the Lucas Jazz Band. The combo included banjo, violin and drums with Mrs. Cone on piano and her father on saxophone and clarinet. The musical group played regularly at dude ranch dances. Mrs. Cone also provided piano accompaniment for silent films. She used the proceeds from her musical performances to underwrite her college tuition.

In 1920, Mrs. Cone attended Finch Junior College in New York City where she studied music, languages and psychology While visiting at home in Wyoming, she met her husband-to-be, Russell Glenn Cone, and was married in June of 1922 in Sheridan, Wyo. In June of 1923, Mrs. Cone gave birth to her only child, Russell Glenn Cone, Jr., who, as an adult, distinguished himself as a city hall reporter for the San Francisco Examiner.

In pursuit of her husband's career, the couple live in Philadelphia, Pa., where Mr. Cone oversaw the building and management of the Philadelphia-Camden (now the Ben Franklin) and Ambassador suspension bridges and managed the Tacony-Palmyra Bridge. In 1933, Mr. Cone was hired by Joseph Strauss to come to San Francisco to oversee construction of the Golden Gate Bridge, then the longest suspension bridge in the world.. In 1937 the couple was divorced.

During World War II, Mrs. Cone worked for the Office of War Information where she prepared and decoded teletype messages for radio broadcast and served as assistant supervisor.

She later worked for the New York Times as press wire operator and research assistant for its west coast correspondent and helped cover the 1946 founding of the United Nations in San Francisco. She also worked as a radio teletype operator for Mackay Radio. In 1948, Mrs. Cone began a 20-year career as a medical transcriptionist/secretary for the Veterans Administration.

Mrs. Cone is survived by her daughter-in-law, Mary Hitchcock Cone of San Anselmo, Calif, and her grand-daughters, Christine Steele Cone of Petaluma, Calif and Lucinda Cone Sicilia and her husband Michael Sicilia, of Sacramento, Calif.


Phebe Rogers

Phebe Rogers, 91, of Clear Lake, Iowa died Sunday, Dec. 14, 1997 at Good Shepherd Healthcare Center, Mason City, lowa.

Funeral services will he held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. 4th St., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Thomas Healey of First Congregational Church, Clear Lake, offleiating. Burial will be in Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Saturday.

Phebe Rogers was born Aug. 18, 1906 in Clear Lake, the daughter of Ross Richardson and Harriet Adelaide (Rice) Rogers. Phebe graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1923 and then graduated from Mason City Junior College. She worked for four years as a secretary to the Superintendent of Clear Lake Schools.

Phebe attended Hamilton Business College for nine months and worked for a couple of years ion Mason City. In 1935, Phebe went to Washington D.C. and worked for the government for three years. She then transferred to Chicago, lll., still working for the Securities and Exchange Commission. While in Washington, she took a night course at George Washington University.

After 15 years in the government, Phebe started working in private industry. She worked for Oxford Ltd. Furniture Company and then worked for Curtis Candy Company, a subsidiary of Standard Brands and then of Nabisco Brands. She retired from Curtis Candy Company in 1971 and returned to Clear Lake. Phebe enjoyed playing bridge, golfing and bowling.

She was a member of the First Congregational Church, Clear Lake; the Crescent Club; the Hi-Lo Bridge Club and Monday Bridge Club; and the NARFE Organization (National Association of Federal Employees).

Survivors include one niece, Mary Marshall and her husband, Gary Canoga Park, Calif; two nephews, Richard Rogers of Clear Lake, and John Rogers and his wife, June, of Burlington, Iowa; one sister-in-law, Darlene Rogers, Clear Lake; many great-nieces amd great-nephews; and several great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews .

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Kingsley Rogers.


Mabel Amundson

Mabel Lillian Amundson 99, of Bethany Manor Care Center, Story City, Iowa, formerly of Clear Lake, Iowa, died Monday Dec. 8, 1997 at the Bethany Care Center.

Funeral services were Friday Dec. 12, 1997 at 11 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake with the Rev. Dean Hess officiating. Interment was in Clear Lake Cemetery, Clear Lake. The Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, was in charge. Memorials may be given in memory of Mabel Lillian Amundson .

Mabel was born April 30, 1898 in Radcliffe, Iowa, the daughter of Lewis and Martha (Engelson) Amundson. She was baptized and confirmed in Immanuel Lutheran Church west of Radcliffe.

Mabel was employed for a number of years as a nurse at Iowa State Soldiers Home in Marshalltown, Iowa, later going to Clear Lake to help care for her elderly parents for the rest of their lives. After the death of her parents (her father in 1947 and her mother in 1966) she and her sister, Ida, continued to reside in Clear Lake until April 1982 when Mabel entered the Bethany Manor Care Center in Story City.

Mabel enjoyed reading, including her Bible which she had read through several times. She was a kind and happy person from childhood to old age.

Mabel is survived by her sisters, Harriet Olsen, Marshalltown, Ida Amundson, Story City, and one brother, Leroy Amundson and his wife, Agnes, Kensett, Iowa; several nieces, nephews and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, Josephine Heng, Amy Linn and Laura Rickman; two brothers, Thomas Amundson and Oscar Amundson.

The organist at the service was Karen Harthan and the soloist was Marilyn Sadler.

Pall bearers were Howard Amundson Leonard Amundson, Harold Amundson, Warren Amundson, Ivan Miller and Chester Amundson.


Savannah Manley

Savannah Sue Manley, seven-month-old daughter of Tom and Angela Manley, of Ventura, Iowa, died Sunday, Dec. 14,1997 at North Iowa Mercy Health Center, East Campus, Mason City, lowa.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Dee. 18, 1997 at the United Methodist Church in Ventura with the Rev. David Gobeli as officiant. Dorothy Schnuelle will be organist. Grandfathers Jerry Flo and Bill Manley will be casketbearers.

Burial will be in Salem Memorial Cemetery north of Lake Mills, Iowa.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel, 160 E. 4th St, Garner, lowa.

Savannah Sue Manley was born May 15, 1997 at Albert Lea, Minn., the daughter of Tom E. and Angela K. Manley.

She is survived by her parents Tom and Angela Manley of Ventura; a brother, Travis Wayne Manley and a sister, Samantha Flo Manley, both of Ventura; maternal grandparents, Jan Thomas of Palm Springs, Calif and Jerry Flo of Bullhead City, Ariz.; paternal grandparents, Bill and Linda Manley of Gooding, Ind.; maternal great-grandparents, Lester and Anna Flo of Lake Mills and John and Arelly Badje of Albert Lea, Minn.; paternal great-grandparent, Delores Clawson of Twin Falls, Ind.; and many aunts and uncles.

She was loved by all and will be deeply missed.


Pauline Edith Kroneman

Pauline Edith Kroneman, 80, of St. Ansgar, Iowa, died Tuesday, Dec. 16, 1997 at the Muse Norris Inpatient Unit in Mason City, Iowa.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Dec. 18, 1997, at 1:30 p.m. at the St. John’s Lutheran Church, Rock Township, Mitchell County, Iowa with Rev. Rose Marie Lewis officiating. Burial was in the St. Ansgar Cemetery, St. Ansgar, Iowa. The Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, St. Ansgar, was in charge.

Pauline Edith Thompson was born at Plainfield, Iowa on March 16, 1917, to Eugene Ellsworth Thompson and Lucille Holmes Thompson. She was baptized into the Christian faith on Dec. 8, 1940 (which 50 years later became the same birth date as her one granddaughter) at St. John’s Lutheran Church and was also confirmed then by Pastor F. C. Ide. In 1919 the family moved to a farm one and one-half miles northeast of St. Ansgar. She attended Spring Valley rural school graduating from St. Ansgar High School in 1934. Pauline then graduated from St. Ann’s Business College in LeSueur, Minn.

She was united in marriage to Alvin George Kroneman on April 14, 1940 at St. John’s Lutheran Church. He brought her to the life she loved, farming. As a youngster, Pauline followed in her father’s footsteps learning to love the great outdoors and love of animals and nature. This love of the land was passed on to their only son, Allan Dean Kroneman. Alvin and Pauline farmed in Rock Township for nearly 40 years with special interest in cattle. She served the county as 4-H leader of the "Core Girls" for 15 years. Showing cattle at State Fair was a highlight for many years. Upon retirement in 1976 they built a home in St. Ansgar.

Pauline took great pride in her retirement years in maintaining well groomed flower beds and landscaping at her home and around town. Restoration and preservation of nature were an important part of her life. You could see her feeding her birds and then watching them with her binoculars. She was a member of the Garden Club, Women’s Club, served on the days of elections and served as a member of the Osage Faith Home Board.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her husband, Alvin, of St. Ansgar; one child, Allan and his wife, Joann; and one granddaughter, Jennie Jo Kroneman all of rural Clear Lake, Iowa; one sister, Mrs. John (Frances) Patterson; nieces and nephews.


Arthur Dale Merwin

Arthur Dale Merwin, 80, Clear Lake, Iowa, died Wednesday, Dec. 17, 1997 at the Willowcreek Health and Rehabilitation Center, Mason City, Iowa.

Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 22 at the Evangelical Free Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Tim Merwin and the Rev. David Wiersbe officiating. Burial was in the Grant Center Township Cemetery, rural Fertile, Iowa. Those planning an expression sympathy may direct memorials to the Arthur Dale Merwin Memorial Fund.

Arthur Dale Merwin was born on Dec. 31, 1916 at Jasper, Texas, the son of Chauncey and Alice (Eyestone) Merwin. He attended various schools in Texas before moving to Des Moines, Iowa, in the late 1920s. He moved to Clear Lake in October 1933 and started driving trucks with his dad.

On June 24, 1939 he married Mabel Van Hoosen at her home in Clear Lake.

Arthur was employed by the Milwaukee Railroad in 1942 and worked there for 35 years until his retirement in 1978. After this he drove a school bus.

He enjoyed railroading and traveling and driving his school bus. He was a member of the Assembly of God, and a lifetime member of the United Transportation Union.

He is survived by a son, Larry Merwin and his wife, Hilda, Titusville, Fla; three daughters, Marilyn Jackson and her husband, Eugene, Greensburg, Ind., Glenys Schloemer and her husband, Al, Mason City, Phyllis Rush and her husband, Robert, Mason City; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; nine sisters, Helen Anderson, Clear Lake, Kathryn "Kit" Zirbel and her husband, Stan, Clear Lake, Ruth Hill and her husband, Richard, Clear Lake, Jane Levisay and her husband, Jim, Ponca, Neb., Doris Bowman and her husband, Johnny, Jackson, Tenn., Carol Mae Wilson and her husband, E. C., Jackson, Tenn., Althea McClendon, Henderson, Tenn., Sara Lyon and her husband, Ed, Memphis, Tenn., Pauline "Honey" Milam and her husband, Sam, Paducah, Ky.; three brothers, Chaunce "Jim" Merwin, Clear Lake, Ralph Merwin and his wife, Helen, Franklin, Tenn., Paul "Bud" Merwin and his wife, Tillie, McKenzie, Tenn.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mabel on June 30, 1997; his parents; one sister, Elizabeth "Betty" Ebaugh; one brother, David Merwin; and one son-in-law, Edgar Randolph.


Stella Margaret Trimble

Stella Margaret Trimble, 89, of Clear Lake, Iowa, died Tuesday, Dec. 16, 1997 at the Good Shepherd Care Center, Mason City, Iowa.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 22, at the First Congregational Church, 205 West 10th Ave. North, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Thomas Healey officiating. Burial was in the Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City. The Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, was in charge of arrangements.

The family of Stella Margaret Trimble has requested that memorial contributions be made to Hospice of North Iowa in her memory.

Stella Margaret Trimble was born on Dec. 17, 1907, in Garner, Iowa, the daughter of Jacob John and Ida Elizabeth Viola (Eddy) Becker. She attended and received her education in the Mason City School System, graduating from Mason City High School in 1927. She also attended and received her teaching certificate from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa. After completing her education she taught school for three years in rural Clear Lake. She was united in marriage to Roy Elmer Trimble on Feb. 20, 1931, in Albert Lea, Minn. He preceded her in death in 1980. In the early 1940s they moved to Sacramento, Calif., where she stayed while her husband was in the service, moving back to Iowa in 1946, farming in rural Swaledale, before moving to Sacramento, Calif., in 1957, working for the State of California Motor Vehicle Drivers License Division until her retirement in 1969. In 1979, they moved back to Clear Lake.

She enjoyed traveling, gardening and animals.

She was a member of the First Congregational Church in Clear Lake and the Clear Lake Rebekah’s Lodge.

She is surived by a son, Robert Trimble and his wife, Donna, Sacramento, Calif.; a daughter, Mary Jo Stricklan and her husband, Dave of Southerlin, Ore.; three grandchildren, Tina Marie Trimble, Nadine Rene Abdeen and Terry Trimble, all of Sacremento; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; one niece, Luella Bacon and her husband, Carrol, Osage Beach, Mo., Tom Fretty and his wife, Jean, of Kensett, and Jake Fretty and his wife, Bev, of Fairmont, Minn., as well as other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Roy Elmer Trimble who died in 1980; and one sister, Ruby Fretty.


Marcella Eileen (Sally) Ballantyne

Marcella Eileen (Sally) Ballantyne, 75, of Chillicothe, Mo., died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 1997 at Hedrick Medical Center, Chillicothe, Mo.

Funeral services were Saturday, Dec. 27 at Calvary Baptist Church with the Bro. Alan Brock officiating and assisted by Bro. Larry Reeter.

Burial was in Edgewood Cemetery.

Memorials may be given to the Calvary Baptist Church or the Salvation Army.

Marcella Ballantyne was born Aug. 20, 1922 in Cerro Gordo County, Iowa, the daughter of Paul and Maude Conibear Mestad. She attended school in Clear Lake.

On Oct. 30, 1940, she married George L. Ballantyne in Bethany, Mo. He preceded her in death in 1967. She moved to Chillicoteh from Argos, Ind., where she lived for the last 50 years. Marcella was a homemaker and was employed by Boss Glove Factory in Chillicothe.

She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Chillicothe.

She is survived by a daughter, Sharon Ballantyne Barnes, Chillicothe; a son, Gary Ballantyne, Chillicothe; a sister, Beverly Tindall, Carol Stream, Ill.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren; and one nephew.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; and an infant brother.


Bennie W. “Ben” Bartleson

Bennie W. “Ben” Bartleson, 68, of Clear Lake, Iowa, died Friday, Dec. 26, 1997 at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa.

Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 29 at Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Kermit Roisen and Rev. Dean Hess officiating.

Burial was in the Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, with military honors conducted by the Clear Lake VFW post #4838.

Bennie W. Bartleson was born March 2, 1929 in Forest City, Iowa, the son of Benard Bartleson. He married Lorrain Carolus on May 2, 1953, in Belmond, Iowa.

Ben grew up in Forest City and attended Forest City schools. He entered the Navy in 1945 and served on the U.S.S. Hector. He worked for Home Insulation in Mason City for 35 years and then worked eight years at Zion Lutheran Church until retiring in 1994.

Ben was an avid golfer and he enjoyed fishing. He loved spending time with his grandson, Sam.

He was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church, the Clear Lake VFW, and All Vets Golf Course.

He is survived by his wife, Lorraine Bartleson, Clear Lake; one daughter, Dawn Treloar and her husband, Tim, Clear Lake; one grandson, Samuel Eli Treloar, Clear Lake; five sisters, Charlotte Klatt, Mason City, Vonnie Lynch and her husband, Bob, Marshalltown, Iowa, Mildred Wilkins and her husband, Bob, Marshalltown, Marian Bartleson, Clear Lake, and Anna Balmer, Marshalltown; three brothers, Russell Balmer, Green Mountain, Iowa, Carl Balmer, Marshalltown and Harold Balmer, Green Mountain; five brothers-in-law, Vernon Carolus, Radcliff, Iowa, Donald Carolus, and Merwin Carolus, both of Mason City, Merlin Carolus, Harlington, Texas and Everett Schrieber, Bloomington, Ill.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father; his grandparents; one brother, Carl Bartleson; three sisters, Alberta Iverson, Marie Schrieber and Val Bartleson; and a special niece, Marnie Vivalda.


Kenneth Wayne Stoakes

Kenneth Wayne Stoakes, 70, of Clear Lake, Iowa, died Thursday, Dec. 25, 1997, at his home in Clear Lake.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Dec. 28, at the United Methodist Church in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Fred Lewis officiating.

Funeral services were also held Monday, Dec. 29 at the United Methodist Church in Reinbeck, Iowa, with the Rev. Fred Harris officiating. Burial was in the Hazelwood Cemetery, Grinnell, Iowa. The family of Kenneth Wayne Stoakes has requested memorial contributions be made in his memory with a scholarship fund being set up in his memory. The French-Hand Funeral Home in Reinbeck was in charge of arrangements in Reinbeck.

Kenneth Wayne Stoakes was born on April 23, 1927, in Traer, Iowa in Tama County, the son of Newell Sherman and Julie Anne (Myers) Stoakes.

He attended and received his education in Hudson, Iowa, Cedar Falls Lab. Schools and rural country school in Geneseo, Iowa; graduating from Geneseo High School in 1945. He also attended Upper Iowa University in Fayette, Iowa. He was united in marriage to Neta Louise Neidiger on Aug. 8, 1948, at the United Methodist Church in Traer. After their marriage he received his BA degree in 1950, from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa. In 1954, he completed his masters degree from Colorado State Teachers College in Greely, Colo. He also worked on his doctorate degree at the University of Iowa, in Iowa City, Iowa. He was a recipient of the National Science Foundation Scholarship. At the age of 27 he was superintendent in Martelle, Iowa. In 1950, he was a coach for basketball and baseball and was acting principal in the Malcolm, Iowa schools; 1952 until 1955 he was a teacher and coach in the Orange Schools; from 1955 until 1960 he was superintendent in the Martelle schools; 1960 until 1966 was principal at Jefferson school in Mason City, Iowa; and from 1966 until 1989 was  Superintendent in Reinbeck and from 1989 until 1994 was curriculum director in Reinbeck until his retirement when he moved to Clear Lake.

He enjoyed reading, golf, woodworking and young people.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Clear Lake, Kiwanis Club in Mason City, Lions Club in Reinbeck, former member of the United Methodist Church in Reinbeck and was on numerous service and professional organizations throughout his life.

He is survived by his wife, Neta Stoakes, Clear Lake; his mother, Julia Stoakes of the Good Shepherd Health Care Center in Mason City; two daughters, Linda (Stoakes) Daseke and her husband, Bob, Vancouver, Wash., Kathleen Stoakes of Des Moines, Iowa; one son, Dr. David Stoakes and his wife, Jacquelyn of Grinnell, Iowa; three grandchildren, Christopher Stoakes and Heather Stoakes of Grinnell, and Meggan Daseke of Vancouver, Wash.; two sisters, Doris Nothnagel of Waterloo, Iowa, and Hazel Himebaugh and her husband, Marvin, of Cedar Falls; and one brother, Dr. Dean Stoakes and his wife, Gladys, of Salem, Ore.; as well as other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father.
