Shotton
Emma Shotton (Harms-Callanan),
77, originally of Clear Lake, Iowa, died July 22,
1997 in Weslaco, Texas.
Memorial services were held
Monday, Aug. 4 at Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake.
Interment was at Memorial Park.
Emma was born Jan. 10, 1920.
She was a homemaker who worked briefly as a welder
during World War II and as a sales associate at
Penney's Department Store. She married Rayman
Callanan on March 16, 1941. Rayman preceded her in
death on July 11, 1987. She was remarried to Robert
Shotton on Dec. 15, 1994.
She is survived by her
husband; three brothers, Floyd Harms of Mason City,
Iowa, Ralph Harms of Waterloo, Iowa, and Raymond
Harms of Dubuque, Iowa; two children, Sue Thorn,
Eagan, Minn. and Ron Callanan of Littleton, Colo.;
and four grandchildren.
Esther
Holmes
Esther Holmes, 80, of Clear
Lake, Iowa, died Tuesday, July 29, 1997, at
Integrated Health Services, Des Moines, Iowa.
A funeral service was held
Saturday, Aug. 2, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial
Chapel, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dean Hess of Zion
Lutheran Church officiating. Burial was in the Clear
Lake Cemetery.
Elnora Esther Holmes was born
July 22, 1917, in Mason City, Iowa, the daughter of
Herman and Tillie (Aswegen) Beenken. She married
Harry Holmes on March 10, 1934, in Mason City.
Esther and her husband farmed
in the Mason City and Clear Lake area. They moved
into Clear Lake in 1953. She enjoyed playing Bingo,
reading, gardening, and she loved to cook.
She is survived by three
children, Lindy Lee Holmes and his wife, Pat, Rolla,
Mo., May Lois Helvik and her husband, Kelvin, Fort
Dodge, Iowa, and Harry Martin Holmes and his wife,
Carolyn, Birdsboro, Pa.; one sister, Ida Thompson,
Sequim, Wash.; 15 grandchildren, Lindy L., Sidney,
Paul, David and Valerie Holmes, Dorothea Henderson,
Diana Lee and Carey Ward Pope, Allyn and Kevin
Roberts, Debra Hawkinson, Renee Marrs, Lorna Smith,
Daniel Hansen, Sarah Moen, and Jon, Michael, Brent
Helvik; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by
her parents; her husband; one daughter, Fay Marrs;
an infant son, Follett; and several brothers and
sisters.

(Kindred) Palmer
Mrs. Carol (Kindred) Palmer,
88, of Des Moines, Iowa, died Friday, Aug. 1, 1997
at Iowa Methodist Medical Center, Des Moines.
Memorial services were held
Monday, Aug. 4, at West Des Moines United Methodist
Church. The body was cremated.
The family suggests memorials
to the Good Samaritan Fund at Wesley Acres.
Carol Palmer was born in
Parkersburg, Iowa. She moved to Des Moines in 1988
from Clear Lake. She had lived in Mechanicsville,
Earlville, Mt. Vernon, Decorah, Marshalltown,
Indianola, Fayette, Waverly, Sioux City, Jefferson,
Mason City and Ventura, all in Iowa. Her first
husband was Rev. Arthur Kindred and after he passed
away she was married to Rev. Howard Palmer. As a
minister's wife, they served churches in several
communities. She taught school as a young woman and
after her marriage, she was a homemaker.
She was active in religious
clubs and other clubs, lodges and organizations.
Carol was a member of the West
Des Moines United Methodist Church and Chapter LE of
P.E.O.
She is survived by three sons,
Jeremy Kindred, Hana, Maui, Hawaii, Michael Kindred,
Columbus, Ohio, Stephen Kindred, New York City,
N.Y.; one brother, Kellogg Hunt, Tallahassee, Fla.;
and seven grandchildren.
Richard D. Balvin
Richard D. Balvin, 72, of
Clear Lake, Iowa, died Saturday, Aug. 2, 1997 at
North Iowa Mercy Health Center East Campus, Mason
City, Iowa.
Graveside services will be
held today (Wednesday), Aug. 6, at 1:30 p.m. at the
Riverside Cemetery Chapel in Marshalltown, Iowa.
Visitation will continue until the service at the
Cemetery Chapel.
Richard D. Balvin was born
July 29, 1925, in Marshalltown, the son of Edward
and Anna (Polak) Balvin. He married Effie M. Tigges
on Dec. 29, 1948, in Marshalltown.
Richard grew up in
Marshalltown and graduated from Marshalltown High
School in 1943. He served in the Navy during World
War II and was stationed in the South Pacific. He
then graduated from Bradley University in Peoria,
Ill. Richard worked for Cherry Burrell Company in
Cedar Rapids, Iowa, from 1952 until retiring in
1989. After retirement, he and his wife moved to
Clear Lake.
Richard was an avid golfer. He
enjoyed fishing and collecting sea shells.
He is survived by his wife,
Effie M. Balvin, Clear Lake; one daughter, Janet
Wiskus and her husband, Wesley, Clear Lake; one
brother, Donald Balvin and his wife, Doris, Plano,
Texas; three aunts, Rose Vajgrt, Mabel Polak, and
Gerri Polak, all of Marshalltown; and many nieces
and nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by
his parents.
Orville H.
Goodling
Orville H. Goodling, 88, of
Huxley, Iowa, died of a heart ailment Monday, July
28, 1997.
Memorial services were held
Wednesday, July 30 at Highland Park Presbyterian
Church in Des Moines, Iowa, of which he was a
member. The body was cremated. Burial will be in
Ventura, Iowa, at a later date.
Mr. Goodling, a native of
Ventura, had lived in Des Moines most of his life
and then at Lake Panorama before moving to Huxley
two years ago. He was a retired Montgomery Ward
salesman, an Army veteran of World War II, and a
member of Lions Club.
He is survived by his wife,
Kathryn; a daughter, Susan Wallace, Huxley; a
sister, Frances Pearson, Ventura; a brother,
Shirley, of Big Fork, Minn.; and a grandchild.

Lauritzen
Elinor Lauritzen, 69,
Sheffield, Iowa, died Friday, Aug. 1, 1997 at North
Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City, Iowa.
Funeral services were held
Tuesday, Aug. 5, at the United Methodist Church,
Thornton, Iowa, with the Rev. Jim Gochenauer
officiating. Burial was in Pleasant View Cemetery,
Thornton.
Elinor was born Oct. 27, 1927
in Thornton, Iowa, the daughter of Emil and Hannah
(Smith) Jacobsen. She attended the Thornton Public
School system graduating with the class of 1945. She
was united in marriage to Burger Lauritzen on July
28, 1956 in Forest City. They made their home
farming just west of Sheffield. Elinor enjoyed
flowers, bowling, playing Bingo and cards with her
family and friends.
She is survived by one
daughter, Brenda Hobbiebrunken and her husband, Ken,
of Thornton; one son, Bart Lauritzen and his wife,
Lanette, of Clear Lake; three grandchildren, Travis
and Trisha Hobbiebrunken of Thornton and Caitlin
Laurtizen of Clear Lake; one sister, Florine Peters,
and her husband, Ernest, of Thornton; three
brothers, Hans Jacobsen and his wife, Velma, of
Thornton, Alvin Jacobsen and his wife, Mary,
Torrance, Calif.; and Irvin Jacobsen and his wife,
Luella, Honolulu, Hawaii.
She was preceded in death by
her husband; parents; and one brother.
John Chapin
John Chapin, a former resident
of Clear Lake, died Tuesday, July 29, 1997.
John used to work for Ozark
Airlines and was transferred to Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
From there he went to Texas. John and Marrilyn were
presently living at 1034 Royal Oaks Drive,
Dickinson, Texas 77539.
Dr. V. Strode
Hinds
Dr. V. Strode Hinds, 69, died
unexpectedly Aug. 3, 1997.
Services will be held today
(Wednesday), Aug. 6, at 11 a.m. at the First United
Methodist Church with the Rev. Doresa Collogan
officiating. Burial will be in the Clear Lake
Cemetery, Clear Lake on Thursday, Aug. 7, with an 11
a.m. graveside service.
The family suggests memorials
be given to the Lewis and Clark Heritage Trail
Foundation.
Dr. Hinds was born Sept. 29,
1927 in Clear Lake, Iowa the son of Vern and Francis
(Strode) Hinds. He graduated from Clear Lake High
School. In 1945 he entered the U.S. Naval Reserves
and served until 1946 in Pacific and Southeast Asia
aboard the U.S.S. Saufley. He attended and graduated
from Mason City Junior College. In 1948 he entered
the University of Iowa School of Dentistry and
received his D.D.S. in 1952 and his M.S. in oral
surgery in 1954. He married Beverly Rowland on Sept.
6, 1953 in Osage. They lived in Iowa City where he
taught oral surgery at the University of Iowa
College of Dentistry until they moved to Sioux City
in 1958. He practiced oral surgery in Sioux City
until his retirement in June of 1992.
He was a member of the
American Dental Association, Iowa Dental Association
member and trustee, N.W. Iowa Dental Association,
Iowa Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons
member and past president, Midwest Society of Oral
and Maxillofacial Surgeons, Member medical staff of
St. Luke's Medical Center and Marian Health Center,
Chamber of Commerce member, Waterways Committee,
Past President Sioux City Rotary Club, 32nd degree
Scottish Rite Mason, Member Abu Bekr Shrine.
Dr. Hinds was active with Boys
Scouts, serving as committee chair and post advisor.
He was one of the founders of Rivercade and Port
Admiral in 1989, and was a member of National Lewis
and Clark Heritage Trail Foundation serving as
president from 1981-82. He also hosted the National
Convention in Sioux City in 1996 and he and his wife
received the Meritorious Achievement Award in 1996.
He was a member of First
United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife,
Beverly; two sons, Mark and his wife, Ann, Sioux
City, Steve and his wife, Maureen, DeSoto, Texas;
and one daughter, Lynne Hinds Peterson and her
husband, Walter; seven grandchildren, Sarah,
Katherine and Brad Hinds, Sioux City, Justin and
Jared Hinds, DeSoto, and Spenser and Alexis
Peterson, Sioux City.
He was preceded in death by
his parents.
Pallbearers will be Dr. C.
Edward Anderson, Dr. Darrel Baker, Dr. Wayne Barnes,
Dr. Richard Dohrmann, Dr. William Hollander and Dr.

Charlotte Luick

June E. Paulsen June E. Paulsen, 89, of Clear Lake, Iowa, and
formerly of Plainfield, Iowa, died Tuesday, Aug. 12,
1997, at Good Shepherd Health Center, Mason City,
where she had lived for the last seven days.
Funeral services were held Friday, Aug. 15, at
the Plainfield United Methodist Church with Pastor
James H. Davis officiating. Burial was in the Willow
Lawn Cemetery, Plainfield. The Kaiser-Corson Funeral
Home, Waverly, Iowa, was in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be directed to either the church or to
the family.
June was born on June 4, 1908 in Polk Township,
Bremer County, Iowa, the daughter of William H. and
Lydia (Farr) Good. June was confirmed at the
Methodist Church in Plainfield and graduated from
the Plainfield High School in 1927. She then went to
work at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., as a
lab technician, and on April 21, 1935, was united in
marriage to Clarence A. Paulsen at the Little Brown
Church in Nashua, Iowa. The couple made their home
in the Waterloo-Cedar Falls, Iowa area and in 1947
moved to Stout, Iowa, where they owned and operated
a grocery store for the next two years. In the
spring of 1950, they began farming in the
Clarksville-Plainfield area, and farmed until
retiring in 1972. They moved to their home in
Plainfield and Clarence died on Sept. 23, 1976. In
1994, June moved to Clear Lake to be closer to her
son and daughter-in-law, Mel and Anita Paulsen and
their family.
She had been a longtime member of the Plainfield
United Methodist Church and was an associate member
of the Clear Lake United Church. June had served on
the Bremer County Council on Aging, was membership
roll chairman for the Plainfield United Methodist
Church, was active with the Plainfield Senior
Citizens, and had been a member of the Eastern Star
in Clarksville, Iowa. She enjoyed reading, sewing,
and fancywork, but most of all, treasured the times
spent with her family and many friends.
She is survived by her two sons and their wives,
Mel and Anita Paulsen, Burnsville, Minn., Roger and
Marion Paulsen, Williston, N.D.; six grandchildren
and their spouses, Steve and Robin Paulsen, Linda
and Roger Nerdig, Ricky and Sherri Paulsen, Randy
Paulsen, Mike and Tracy Paulsen, Terri Paulsen; six
great-grandchildren, Amber, Andrew, Shannon, Cody,
Jessy, Tyler; one sister, Lucille Briggs, Waverly;
and two brothers and their wives, Willis and Martha
Good, Chariton, Iowa, Clark and Helen Good of Nashua
her nieces, nephews, and a host of special friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and her
husband, Clarence.

Stratton Lewerke
Yvonne Stratton Lewerke, 81, of Clear Lake, Iowa,
died Wednesday, Aug. 13, 1997 at North Iowa Mercy
Health Center's East Campus, Mason City, Iowa.
Funeral services were held Friday, Aug. 15 at the
Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with
Ivan Rogers officiating. Burial was in the Rockwell
Cemetery, Rockwell, Iowa.
The family suggests memorials may be made to
Hospice of North Iowa.
Yvonne Stratton Lewerke was born Jan. 15, 1916 at
McClean, Ill., the daughter of Charles and Dovie
(Wise) Stratton.
She spent most of her adult life devoted to the
welfare and development of Israel and the Jews,
'God's chosen people. She is now asleep in Jesus
awaiting `the hour in which all that are in their
graves shall hear his voice and come forth; they
that have done good unto the resurrection of life
...'3 John 5:28-29.
Yvonne loved teaching and was employed in the
Mason City School District for 10 years. She worked
with special needs and mentally challenged
children.
Her hobbies included reading, gardening, pulling
weeds, and watching birds from her window. She also
enjoyed the companionship of her dog, Muffin.
She is survived by her two daughters and their
husbands, Diane Lewerke Kafer and her husband, Bill,
of Manly, Iowa, and Ruth Lewerke Newman and her
husband, Jay Newman, of Kensett, Iowa; three sons,
Curtis Lewerke and his wife, Julie, of Clear Lake,
Dennis Lewerke and his wife, Jodie, Clear Lake, and
Jonathan Lewerke and his wife, JoEllen, of Mason
City; two sisters, Laura and her husband, Don
Spitler, Mulberry, Ark., and Ruth and her husband,
Paul Luttenegger, of Burlington, Iowa; a brother,
Sid and his wife, Ruth Stratton, of Burlington; 18
grandchildren, Chris Kafer, Kevin Lewerke, Scott
Lewerke, Todd Lewerke, Jayson Newman, Ben Lewerke,
Jonathan Lewerke, Cindy Hamlin, Vickie Hunemiller,
Tammy Kallenbach, Karen Wistrom, Karla Parker, Lisa
Lewerke, Brenda Jacobs, Aimee Kroeger, Jaymie Newman
and Jayna Newman; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; four
brothers, Russell Charles Jr., John Curtis and
Calvin; and one grandchild, Kristie Ann Lewerke.
Pat Treloar was organist. Special music was
provided by Jayna Newman and Aimee Kroeger.

Hunemiller, Tammy Kallenbach, Karen Wistrom, Karla

Mervin
D. Muhlenbruch
Mervin D. Muhlenbruch, 71, of Thornton, Iowa,
died Wednesday, Aug. 13, 1997, at the Muse-Norris
Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Aug. 16, at
the Swaledale United Methodist Church, with the Rev.
Bruce Witkers officiating. Burial was at Pleasant
View Cemetery, Thornton.
He was born on Oct. 10, 1925, the son of John and
Laura (Stadtlander) Muhlenbruch. He attended the
Swaledale School system before graduating from the
Thornton High School. He entered the United States
Army in the fall of 1946 serving with the
Occupational Forces until his discharge in May of
1947. Upon his return home he worked for G.A. Eddy
of Swaledale, Iowa, and Deckers in Mason City, Iowa,
until starting to farm in 1949.
In November of 1948 he was united in marriage to
Adeline Gruis. They farmed all his life around the
Swaledale and Thornton area until retiring in 1993.
Merv enjoyed spending time with his family,
especially his grandchildren, golfing and having
coffee with his friends. He was a member of the
Swaledale United Methodist Church, AMVETS of Clear
Lake, Iowa, and the Thornton Lions Club.
He is survived by his wife, Adeline, Thornton;
two daughters, Kay Squier and her husband, Wayne,
Nancy Payton and her husband, Ron; one son, Brian
Muhlenbruch and his wife, Pam, all of Thornton; six
grandchildren, Michele (Squier) Smuck and her
husband, Matt, Amy, Dana, and Laura Payton, Trisha
and Cole Muhlenbruch; two great-grandchildren, Derek
and Andrew Smuck; one brother, Wayne Muhlenbruch and
his wife, Alvina, Clear Lake; two sisters, Irene
Dannen and her husband, Else of Mason City, and
Mardene Berding, Mason City; a special friend, Pat
Knutson and her husband, Gary of Forsythe, Mo.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two
brothers.
Barbara B. Ransom
Barbara B. Ransom, 71, of Clear Lake, Iowa, died
Tuesday, Aug. 12, 1997, at the Muse-Norris Hospice
Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa.
There was no visitation. Her body was cremated.
Memorial services were held Saturday, Aug. 16, at
the Clear Lake United Methodist Church, with the
Rev. Fred. Lewis officiating. Ward-Van Slyke
Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, was in charge of
services. The family suggests memorials to the
Barbara B. Ransom Memorial Fund.
Barbara Beatrice Ransom was born Jan. 28, 1926,
at Gary, Ind., the daughter of Robert and Sally
(Burdick) Burton. She received her education in
Mason City schools.
On Aug. 27, 1947, she married James A. Ransom at
Clear Lake.
Barbara loved her family, her church, and her
many friends in the community. For the past 13
years, she volunteered her help at the Methodist
Church, and for many years, helped at the Oakwood
Care Center, where her mother resides. Barbara
enjoyed her bridge and 500 clubs, was a member of
the Clear Lake VFW Auxiliary, and was also a member
of the Clear Lake Library Board. She was a wonderful
person and will be missed, but forever remembered by
her family and friends.
She is survived by her husband, James Ransom,
Clear Lake; her mother, Sally Burdick, Clear Lake;
one daughter, Sue Harris, Scottsdale, Ariz.; one
son, Michael Ransom and his wife, Jeanine, and their
son, Benjamin, Rochester, Minn.; one sister, Bonnie
Forzano and her husband, Dick, East Liverpool, Ohio;
step-sister, Marilyn Klahn and her husband, Richard,
Marquette, Mich.; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father, Robert;
and one grandson, Tyler.
Organist Mary Jane Reynolds accompanied soloist
Marilyn Sadler.
Honorary pallbearers were Bud Heitland, Donna
Heitland, Les Heitland, Alberta Heitland, Ken
Thomsen, Ann Thomsen, Ed Callanan, Pauline Callanan,
Arthur Juhl, Ruth Juhl, Joe Lambert, Eugene King,
Duane Kuhlers, LaVern Miller, James Buck, Joe Buck,
and Robert Bortle.
Clifton C. Copas
Clifton C. Copas, 71, of Clear Lake, Iowa, died
Monday, Aug. 11, 1997 at his home.
Funeral services were held Friday, Aug. 15, at
St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Clear Lake, with
Msgr. Joseph J. Slepicka officiating. Interment was
in the Clear Lake Cemetery, Clear Lake. The Ward-Van
Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, was in charge of
arrangements.
Clifton was born Sept. 12, 1925 in Mitchell,
S.D., the son of Joseph and Gladys (Benson) Copas.
He moved with his folks at an early age to Britt,
Iowa. He graduated from Britt High School. After
graduating from high school, he served in the U.S.
Navy on the USS St. Louis as a seaman's first class
during World War II. He was awarded the American
Area Ribbon, Victory medal, Asiatic Pacific Ribbon,
seven stars, and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon,
one star.
Clifton was married to Virginia Johnson on Feb.
9, 1945 in Fairmont, Minn. They lived in Britt,
where he drove semi for Newbrough Trucking out of
Wesley, Iowa. They moved to Clear Lake in 1962.
Clifton drove semi for Stockberger Transfer and
Storage, in Mason City, Iowa, until his retirement.
Clifton enjoyed family gatherings and picnics. He
was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and
the 828 Teamsters union.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia Copas, Clear
Lake; 10 children, Louetta Best, Clear Lake, Edward
Copas and his wife, Kolene, Las Vegas, Nev., Diana
Allen, Mason City, Iowa, Douglas Copas and his wife,
Jo, Salina, Kan., Altha Garfin and her husband,
Andy, Litchfield, Minn., Gregory Copas and his wife,
Debbie, Glencoe, Minn., Vincent Copas, Clear Lake,
Phillip Copas of Opportunity Village, Clear Lake,
Monica VerHelst and her husband, Don, Mason City,
Timothy Copas and his wife, Suzanne, Ventura, Iowa;
26 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; his
mother, Gladys Copas, Britt; one brother, Bill Copas
and his wife, LaVonne, Salina, Kan.
He was preceded in death by his father in 1961;
and one son, Thomas Copas in 1985.
Sr. Mary Arnold was organist and special music
was by St. Patrick's Choir.
Pallbearers were Duane Polsdofer, Steve Meyers,
Dave Wilhelm, Denny Best, Bill Bielefeld, Curtis
Nelson.
Savanah Lynn Bradshaw
Savanah Lynn Bradshaw, 14-months, of Greene,
Iowa, died Saturday, Aug. 16, 1997 at St. Mary's
Hospital, Rochester, Minn.
Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday),
Aug. 20, at Agape Christian Family Church, Clear
Lake, Iowa with the Pastor David Toyne officiating.
Burial will be in Clear Lake Cemetery, Clear Lake,
Iowa.
The family suggests memorials in her name.
Savanah was born June 11, 1996 at North Iowa
Mercy Health Center's east campus in Mason City,
Iowa, the daughter of Jason and Julie (Osborn)
Bradshaw.
She will be remembered for her hugs and kisses,
as well as her adorable dimple. Savanah loved to
dance and enjoyed playing with her brother and
sister.
She is survived by her parents, Jason and Julie,
Greene; a brother, Spencer, and a sister, Sydney,
both at home; maternal grandparents, Jerry and Margo
Hannah of Forest City, Iowa; paternal grandparents,
Gary and Dureen Bradshaw, Clear Lake; great-maternal
grandparent, Theo Osborn, Wilmar, Minn.; five uncles
and aunts; 14 great aunts and uncles; and several
cousins.
She was preceded in death by her maternal
grandfather, Robert Osborn.
