Jerome J.
(Jerry) Schmitz, 72 of 19784 Heather Ave., Clear
Lake,
Iowa died Wednesday, Sept. 27. 1994, at North
Iowa Mercy Health
Center's east campus, Mason City, Iowa.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday,
Sept. 29, 1995 at St.
Patrick's Catholic Church, Clear Lake. Msgr.
Joseph J. Slepicka
officiated. Marie Faber was organist and the
St. Patrick's Choir provided music. Following
services, the body was cremated.

The family suggests memorials in his name.
Jerry was born Nov. 10, 1922 in Minneapolis,
Minn., the son of
Francis and Anna Schmitz. The family moved to
Chicago, Ill, when Jerry was five months old.
He graduated from Lane Tech High School in
Chicago and went on to earn a degree in civil
engineering from the University of Chicago.
He served in the United States Navy during
World War II as a civil
engineer Sea Bee, helping to build the air strip

He was united in marriage to Mercedes Black
June 15, 1946 in
Chicago, Ill.
He began employment as a civil engineer for
the Rock Island
Railroad (then Chicago Northwestern) Feb. 18,
1946. He was employed by the line for 33 years.
After living in Minnesota and Iowa for many
years, the couple
moved to Clear Lake, Iowa in 1970.
Jerry enjoyed collecting stamps and H.O.
model trains, as well as
golf, deer hunting and working in the yard.
He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic
Church and Ducks
Unlimited.
He is survived by his wife, Mercedes Schmitz,
of Clear Lake; five
children, J.J. and his wife Annie Schmitz of
Waterloo, Iowa,
Patricia Swanson and her husband Charles of
Hastings, Minn.,
Susan Riordan and her husband Kevin of
Carbondale, Colo.,
Faith Bratton and her husband Joe of Clive, Iowa
and Edward Schmitz of St. Paul, Minn.; a sister,
Cecillia DeDecker of Phoenix, Ariz.; and 18
grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a
brother,
Bernard Schmitz; and a grandson, Jeffery William
Riordan.

Ruth Stokes, 73, of 115 13th Ave. S., Clear
Lake,
Iowa, died Friday, Sept. 29, 1995 at Muse Norris
Hospice Inpatient
Unit, Mason City, Iowa.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday,
Oct. 2, 1995 at First Congregational Church, 205
W. 10th Ave. S., Clear Lake, with the Rev.
Charles Williams officiating. Burial was in the
Clear Lake Cemetery.
Visitation was held Sunday at Ward-Van Slyke
Colonial Chapel, 101 4th St. N., Clear Lake, and
one hour prior to service time Monday at the
church.
Pat Treloar was organist and Deloris Williams
was soloist.
Pallbearers were Shane Stokes, Shelby Pierce,
Tim Stokes, Charles G. Thompson, Christian
Stokes, Glenn Shropshire, and Gary Miller.
Anna Ruth Stokes was born Aug. 23, 1922 at
Clear Lake, the
daughter of Earl Miller and Ida Miller (nee)
Jahnke. She attended Clear Lake schools and
graduated from Clear Lake High School
in 1940. She worked for a brief time in
Waterloo, Iowa then traveled
to Milton, Fla. where she was married to Wayne
Stokes on June 24,
1943. While her husband served overseas in the
U.S. Navy, she lived with her sister-in-law in
San Francisco, Calif. In 1945, when her husband
was discharged from the service, the couple
returned to Clear Lake and resided there ever
since.
She was a member of First Congregational
Church where she served as deaconess, served on
various committees, and was known for
her contribution in making candy, mince meat and
crafts for the church Christmas bazaars. She was
also a member of Lake Plungers Investment Club
and enjoyed her birthday clubs and coffee
groups.
She loved to swim and in her younger days
swam across Clear Lake. Her greatest joys in
life were her family, grandchildren and giving
of her time and gifts to others.
Survivors include her husband, Wayne Stokes
of Clear Lake; a son, Gordon Stokes and his
wife, Gayle, of Clear Lake; two grandsons, Shane
Stokes and his wife, Teresa, of Iowa City, and
Christian Stokes and his friend, Amy Hirt, both
of Riverside; a great-grandson, Hunter Stokes of
Iowa City; a sister, Gretchen Miller of Clear
Lake; a sister-in-law, Viola Stokes of Clear
Lake; several nieces and nephews; and many, many
friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one
sister, Helen Miller; and one brother, Adam
Miller.

Robert Kennedy
James Robert Kennedy, 74, of 2300 Main Ave.,
Clear Lake, Iowa
died Saturday, Sept. 30, 1995 at home from a
rare neurological disease of brief duration.
The funeral service will be 1:30 p.m
Wednesday, Oct. 4, 1995 at the United Methodist
Church in Clear Lake. The Rev. Fred Lewis will
officiate. Burial will be in the Clear Lake
Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by
Clear Lake V.F.W. Post No. 4868.
Visitation was Tuesday, Oct. 3 at the
Ward-Van Slyke Colonial
Chapel, Clear Lake.
The family requests no flowers, but suggests
any memorials be given to Opportunity Village or
the United Methodist Church of Clear Lake.
He was born in Clear Lake Aug. 29, 1921, the
son of the late
Mary Williams Kennedy and Samuel Kennedy, Jr.
He attended Clear Lake Public Schools and
graduated with a degree in mechanical
engineering from Iowa State University, where he
was a member and president of Phi Kappa Psi
Fraternity.
He entered the Army Air Corps and took flight
engineering training
shortly therber and president of Phi Kappa Psi
Fraternity.

shortly thereafter and was commissioned a Second
Lieutenant. He
served with valor in the South Pacific as a
flight engineer aboard a B-29 bomber and was
awarded the Purple Heart medal after his plane
was shot down over Tokyo Bay.
He returned to Clear Lake following World War
II and entered the
family business of vegetable growing with his
father and brother and
later his son.
In 1949 he married Nancy N. Nix of Los
Angeles, Calif., then a
teacher at Clear Lake High School.
Mr. Kennedy was active in business and
community affairs. He
served on the Clear Lake School Board and was
active in the United
Methodist Church and Boy Scouts. He was a
member of the Masonic Lodge and the American
Legion, the North Iowa Men's Garden Club. He
was a charter 50-year member of the V.F.W. and
an enthusiastic Rotarian for 49 years. He was a
Paul Harris Fellow and past president of the
Clear Lake Rotary Club.

Applying advanced engineering methods he
became a leader in
vegetable farming. He was a member of the Iowa
State Irrigators
Association, the Farm Bureau and past president
of the Iowa State
Vegetable Growers Association. He received many
awards including the Iowa State Horticultural
Society Merit Award.

John Raymond Oliver, 57 of 1200 10th Ave. N.
#45, died
Thursday, Sept. 28 1995, at home. There will
be no visitation.
His body was cremated. Memorial services were
held at 11 a.m.

John Raymond Oliver was born Dec. 21, 1937 in
Anadarko, Okla.,
son of John A. Oliver and Hazel Oliver (nee)
O'Neal. He was
married to Geneva Henningsen on April 4, 1970 at
the Little
Brown Church, Nashua.
John grew up in Bakersfield, California, and
graduated from
Bakersfield High School in 1956. He served in
the United States
Air Force and was stationed at Parks Air Force
Base in California.
He moved to Mason City in 1961 and worked for
Armours for 19 years.
John enjoyed coin collecting and reading
poetry and westerns. He
was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose and
former member of the Local P38 AFLCIO.
Survivors include his parents, John A. and
Hazel Oliver, Lake City,
Minn.; his former wife and dear friend, Geneva
"Jimmie" Henningsen,
Clear Lake; two sisters, Marilyn Chant, Lake
City, Minn.; and
Phyllis Moranville, Humble, Texas; one brother,
Alan Oliver,
Houston, Texas; and one niece and two nephews

G. Amos, 80, of Clear Lake, died Sunday, Oct. 8,
1995, at
the Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake.
A funeral Mass was held at 10 am. Tuesday,
Oct. 10, 1995, at St.
Patrick's Catholic Churchin Clear Lake with
Msgr. Joseph J. Slepicka
officiating.
Burial was in the Elmwood St. Joseph Cemetery
in Mason City. The Ward-Van Slyke Colonial
Chapel, Clear Lake, was in charge of services.
Frances G. Amos was born on April 11, 1915,
in Emmetsburg, Iowa the daughter of Robert
Laughlin and Katherine Laughlin (nee) Jackman.
She attended Emmetsburg Grade School and
graduated from Holy Family City Junior College
in 1934. She was united in marriage to
Joseph Burton Amos on Oct. 4, 1936, and he was
killed in action in
the battle for Iwo Jima in 1945.
Frances was a long time resident of Mason
City, moving to Clear
Lake in 1960, where she enjoyed antique hunting
with her special sister-in-law Arlene Jacobson
Laughlin. She also loved the lake and the
activities there and was an avid fishing
enthusiast.
She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic
Church in Clear Lake.
Left to cherish her memory is a daughter,
Kathryn "Kate" Quinn
and her husband David of Grayslake, Ill.; and a
son, John Amos and his wife Mary, of Clear Lake;
three grandchildren, Matthew Justin Amos of
Clear Lake, Jennifer Sarah Ingersol of Edwards
Air Force Base, Calif. and David Sullivan Quinn
of Lake Villa, Ill; one great-grandson, Mark
Allen Ingersoll; one sister, Margaret Morgan and
her husband John of Austin, Minn.; one brother,
Patrick Laughlin of Webster City, Iowa; three
sisters-in-law, Doris, Hazel, and Arlene
Laughlin; as well as other relatives and
friends.
Besides her husband, she was also preceded in
death by her
parents; two sisters, Cassie Essley and Virginia
Scott; and
three brothers, Robert Laughlin, John Laughlin,
and Jerry Laughlin.

Marie Eason, 91, of La Mesa, Calif., died
Monday, Sept. 25,
1995 at Golden Palms Nursing Home in San Diego,
Calif. The body was cremated. Graveside
service will be held later with burial at the
Sanborn Cemetery in Sanborn, Iowa.
Dolly Marie Lynam was born Dec. 28, 1903 in
Woodbury County,
Iowa, daughter of Sylvester Lynam and Grace
(nee) Bolin Lynam.
She married Dr. John Marden Eason, D.D.S., on
June 2, 1925 at
Orange City, Iowa.
Marie grew up near Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, a
member of a large and
loving family. She attended rural school
through eighth grade and later [a] beauty school
in Sioux City, Iowa. Following completion of
beauty school, she took a job in Sanborn, Iowa,
where she met and mararied Dr. Eason. She lived
in Sanborn until 1972 when she moved to La Mesa,
Calif., after the death of her husband.
Thereafter she made her home with her daughter
and family in California.
Marie took great pride in her children and
grandchildren and was
always very close to her parents, sisters and
brothers. She was a good cook, a good friend
and a devoted mother and grandmother. Her
hobbies included baking, crewel embroidery and
painting plaster
figurines. She was a member of the D.A.R.
Survivors include two sons, John Verne Eason
and his wife Mary,
of Clear Lake, Iowa and James Marden Eason of
Lakeside Calif.; one
daughter, Joan Marie Horne and her husband John
of La Mesa, Calif.; five grandchildren, John
Mark Horne and his wife Cindy of San Diego,
Calif.; Julia Marie Russell and Jane Mary Horne,
both of La Mesa, Calif.; John Jay Eason and his
wife Sara of Ankeny, Iowa and Melanie Kay
Eason of Fairmont, Minn.; three
great-grandchildren, Russell Johnson and
Samantha and Caleb Horne; three sisters, Thelma
Burmeister and her husband Clarence of Bend,
Ore.; Sylvia Rumohr of Moville, Iowa and Dorothy
Willer of Santa Maria, Calif and many nieces and
nephews.
Marie was proceeded in death by her parents;
husband; five
brothers, Jacob Lynam, Jim Ed Lynam, Harry
Lynam, Stanley Lynam and Everett Lynam; and four
sisters Mabel (nee) Lynam,
Nell (nee) Lynam, Elsie (nee) Lynam and Blanche
(nee) Lynam.

Mrs. Ida A. Morse, 70, of Fertile, Iowa died
Sunday, Oct. 8, 1995 at the North Iowa Mercy

at 10:30 a.m. at
Church of Christ, Fertile, Iowa with the Rev.
Dennis Ganz officiating.

Oct. 12 at the Ventura Cemetery, Ventura, the

Ward-Van Slyke Colonial chapel, Clear Lake, was
in charge.

Ida was born Oct. 24, 1924 in Ventura, Iowa,
the daughter of
Addison H. Cooley and Elina C. Bach Cooley. She
graduated
from Ventua High School in 1942.
Ida worked at the Clear Lake Bakery and then
Clear Lake Mirror.
She married Harry E. Morse Dec. 22, 1945 in
Ventura, Iowa.
They lived in the North Iowa area until
moving back to Fertile, Iowa
in 1962 where she lived ever since. She
operated Lime Rock Cafe
in Fertile and also was a well known cook in the
area.
Ida enjoyed doing all types of crafts, and
made dog booties for
Libby Riddles dog sled team in Iditarod Dog Sled
Race in Alaska.
Ida is survived by seven children, Sandy
Gjerdahl and her husband
Dave, Rake, Iowa; Steve Morse and his wife Geri,
St. Paul Park, Minn.; Tim Morse and his wife
Kathy, Colorado Springs, Colo.; Scott Morse,
Anchorage, Ala.; Pat Morse and his wife Elida,
Clear Lake, Iowa; Jon Morse and his wife Debbie,
Anchorage, Ala.; and Elin Miner and her husband
Harold "Shorty" Miner, Fertile, Iowa; 18
grandchildren; three great- grandchildren; one
sister, Evalena Coe and her husband Ted
Coe, Ventura, Iowa; and one brother Orland
Cooley and his wife Doris, Ridgeway, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her parents;
husband in 1963;
grandson Troy Burke; three brothers, Lawrence
Cooley, Arnold Cooley, and Clarence Cooley.
