Phyllis Marian Wilkins
Phyllis Marian Wilkins, 73, Carlsbad, Calif., widow of
William R. Wilkins, died Saturday, Jan. 21, 1995, at her home,
surrounded by loved ones. Memorial services were held Friday,
Jan. 27, at First Presbyterian Church, Mason City, with the
Rev. Donald Simmonds officiating. Burial was in the Memorial Park
Cemetery. There was no visitation. The body was cremated.
Phyllis was born Oct. 12, 1921, in Duluth, Minn., the daughter
of Roy and Laura Westfall. She was a graduate of Washburn High
School and attended the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.
On Aug. 24, 1940, she married William "Bill" Wilkins in Minneapolis,
where they resided. In 1954, they moved to Clear Lake, where they
made their home for 10 years before moving to Mason City in 1964.
Phyllis had a full and rewarding career as a homemaker for her family.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Mason City, for many
years. Over her lifetime, she served at several churches as Sunday
School teacher, Sunday School superintendent and also church librarian.
She was both a Cub Scout and Girl Scout leader for more than a decade.
Phyllis served as president of Music Mothers and other youth
organizations in Clear Lake as well as playing an integral role
in the "Reading Is Fundamental" (RIF) Program at Hoover Elementary
School in Mason City. Phyllis was a past member of Todays Club,
O.T. Club, Chapter L.K., P.E.O. and a member of S.C. Chapter of P.E.O.
in Carlsbad. Additionally, she was a member of the Solana Beach
Presbyterian Church in Solona Beach, Calif.
She was an avid reader, enjoyed golf, classical music, travel and
the challenge and adventure of life. In recent years, Phyllis took
courses and taught life story writing, having articles published in
local California publications.
She is survived by two sons, William R. Wilkins Jr. of Bellevue, Wash.,
and Todd R. Wilkins of Mill Creek, Wash.; two daughters,
Linda Beamer Shortreed of Idaho Falls, Idaho, and Holly Wilkins Stork,
San Diego, Calif.; nine grandchildren, Libby and Peter Wilkins,
Todd, Anne and Jennie Beamer, Allison Wilkins Hopper and
Timmy Wilkins, and Andrew and Alexander Stork; and one
great-granddaughter, Ashley Wilkins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Laura Westfall;
her husband, William R. Wilkins Sr.; and one sister, Joyce Belt.
Russell Ernest Wilson Marshall
Russell Ernest Wilson Marshall, 79, of Canoga Park, Calif.,
died Monday, Jan. 24, 1995, at his home.
Graveside services were held Friday, Jan. 27, at the Congregational
Church in Clear Lake, officiated. Burial will follow in the Clear Lake
Cemetery. The Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel was in charge of
services.
Russell was born Dec. 3, 1915 in Salem, Ind., the son of Preston and
Essie (Durnil) Marshall. He moved with his family to Clear Lake,
at an early age. He attended Clear Lake schools. In 1939, he moved
to California. He served as a private in the United States Army
during World War II. Employed as a house painter, he later worked
as a painter for the Portland, Ore. School District for 20 years,
retiring in 1977. After retirement he moved to Canoga Park, Calif.,
to live with his son.
Russell was an accomplished artist who was especially talented
painting landscapes, clowns and animals. He also enjoyed playing
golf and the banjo.
He is survived by his son, Gary Marshall and his wife, Mary,
Canoga Park, Calif.; four grandchildren, Sandra Rebbeck of
Reno, Nev., Barbara Curtiss of Littlerock, Calif., Darcy Marshall
of North Hills, Calif., and JoAnn Marshall, North Hollywood, Calif.;
five great-grandchildren, Brandy Marshall, North Hills, Calif.,
Talena, Lora and Debra and Russell Curtiss, all of Littlerock,
Calif.; a brother, Fred Marshall of Scappoose, Ore.; and a sister,
Leona Brooks, Scappoose, Ore.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ray
Marshall and Pally Marshall; three sisters, Zella Carter,
Ladell Dyer and Francys Pritchard. Pallbearers were Pat Marshall,
Gerald Jensen, Ralph (Red) Johnson and Dick Rogers.
John Kendall (Jr.) Johnson
Dr. J.K. Johnson, Jr., 91, Clear Lake, died Saturday, Jan.
28, 1995, at his home. A prayer service was held at the Ward-Van
Slyke Funeral Home Monday, Jan. 30, with the Rev. Donald Simmonds
of First Presbyterian Church officiating. Pat Treloar was the organist,
and Dee Williams, soloist.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 31, at First United
Methodist Church, Jefferson, Iowa, with the Dr. Allen Call officiating.
Interment was in Jefferson Cemetery, Jefferson.
Dr. Johnson asked that memorials be directed to Hospice of
North Iowa in Mason City and Genesis Development in Jefferson.
John Kendall Johnson, Jr., was born Feb. 24, 1903 in Jefferson, Iowa.
His parents regarded caring for others as a responsibility and a joy,
and the value they placed on service became in John an element of
character. He spent his life as a physician and community servant.
J.K. Johnson lived most of his life in Jefferson. He graduated
from Jefferson High School in 1921 and received his medical
training at Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine. Upon
completion of his medical education in 1927, he returned to
Jefferson to join his father's practice. He was passionate about
medicine, engaging in active practice for 63 years. Although he
retired in 1990 after moving to Clear Lake to be closer to....
He was a member of many local, state and national organizations
and an officer in most of them. With his wife, Vera, as his
constant and tireless partner, "Doc" was an energetic promoter
of Jefferson and his home state. It was as much a measure of his
vitality as a sign of his commitment to service that after moving
to Clear Lake at the age of 88, he quickly made a place for
himself in the community as a volunteer. His work on the Main
Street Clear Lake effort, the Convention and Visitors Bureau,
the Board of the Iowa Trolley Park and as the unofficial
photographer for the Chamber of Commerce, among other
activities, helped to make him a familiar face in his new home
town. Though motivated by the great pleasure he found in working
with people and somewhat ncomfortable with public recognition,
Dr. Johnson had the good fortune to be recognized and appreciated
during his life. He received many awards and acknowledgements for
his professional and volunteer activities.
He is survived by a daughter Mary Ann Hendricks and her
husband Dr. James Hendricks; grandchildren Thomas Hendricks
and his wife, Susan and their children, James and Megan, and
Dr. John Hendricks and his wife, Kathy, and their nephew, Josh.
Berneice Elizabeth Nassen
Berneice Elizabeth Nassen, 83, of Mason City, formerly of
Davenport, Iowa, died Friday, Jan. 27, 1995, at the Genesis Medical
Center East, in Davenport.
Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 30, at the Cunnick-Collins
Mortuary in Davenport. Burial was in the Davenport Memorial Park
Cemetery. Memorials can be made to the Moose Heart.
Berneice E. (nee) Carothers was born April 28, 1911, in Taylor Ridge,
Ill., the daughter of James L. and Nora (Roberts) Carothers.
On Aug. 7, 1931, she married Clifford Reem in Rock Island, Ill.
He died July 13, 1951. She later married Bernard Nassen on
Sept. 2, 1961, in Sioux Falls, S.D. He died Sept. 29, 1983.
She once was employed by the Mason City Schools in the cafeteria,
and more recently had been a housewife and homemaker. She was a
member of the St. James Lutheran Church, Mason City, the
Mason City V.F.W. auxiliary, the Mason City Women of the Moose,
where she also served as the senior reagent and the state recorder.
She also belonged to the Mason City Grandmothers Club, Mason City
Birthday Club, and....

Jane L. Anderson
Mrs. Jane L. Anderson, 82, of Garner, Iowa, died Monday,
Jan. 30, 1995, at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center East Campus,
Mason City, Iowa.
Memorial services were held Saturday, Feb. 4, 1995, at the
Jehovah Witnesses Kingdom Hall, Mason City, with Timothy Hartman
officiating. The family suggests memorials to the Jane Anderson
Memorial Fund.

Jane was born July 5, 1912, in Baltic, S. D., the daughter of
Knute and Emelia (Aker) Fossum. She graduated from Baltic
High School and then [from] Sioux Valley School of Nursing,
Sioux Falls, S.D. She worked as a nurse in the surgery unit.
On June 12, 1937, she married Martin Anderson, Jr., in Sioux Falls.
They lived on a farm near Dell Rapids, S.D., until 1938, when they
moved to Sioux Falls and lived there until 1980 when they moved to
Garner.
Jane loved to sew and crochet. She especially loved to read the
Bible and was excellent teacher of the Bible. She has been active
in the ministry for the Jehovah Witness for the past 58 years.
She is survived by her husband, Martin Anderson, Jr. Garner; one
son Lannie Anderson and his wife, Claudia, Garner; and two
grandchildren, Erik and Mariana Anderson.
She was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers,
Lawrence, Maurice, Joe, Art and Carl Fossum; and five infant sisters.

Larry David Hill
Larry David Hill, 51, of Clear Lake, died Tuesday, Jan.
31, 1995, at his home with his family and friends at his bedside.
Funeral services were held Friday, Feb. 3, at Zion Lutheran Church,
with the Sister Elaine Frank, chaplain at North Iowa Mercy Health
Center, will officiate. Burial was at the Clear Lake Cemetery.
The family suggests memorials in his name. Larry was born
Aug. 27, 1943 in Manhattan, Kan., the son of Dr. James K. Hill and
Jo Margaret Hill (nee) Foryth.
On Sept. 23, 1956 [??], he was married to Ada Tobey, in Bismark, N.D.
He was employed at Winnebago Industries at the time of his death.
He is survived by his wife, Ada Hill, Clear Lake; three sons,
Tim Hill, Las Vegas, Nev., Jim Hill, Clear Lake, and Ken Hill
and his fiance, Darcie Berghefer, of Clear Lake; his mother,
Peg Hill, Titonka, Iowa; and three brothers, Karry Hill, Tuscon,
Ariz., Robbin Hill, Mason City, and Jim Hill, Garner, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his father; and an infant sister.
Organist Mary Jane Reynolds accompanied soloist Paul Langholz.
Pallbearers were Oscar Hicks, Rudy Scheibel, Greg Hanson,
Terry Scheibel, Red Fullman.
Leona M. McEldoon
Leona M. McEldoon, 84, of Clear Lake, died Thursday,
Feb. 2, 1995, at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East Campus,
Mason City, Iowa.Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 4, at
the Christian Church in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Larry Squier officiating.
Burial was in the Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City. The family
suggests memorials in her name.
Leona was born Jan. 11, 1911, in Klemme, Iowa, the daughter of
Charles and Anna (Knoke) Schmidt. The family later moved to
Mason City.

On Nov. 23, 1929, she married James Paul McEldoon in Mason City.
The couple owned and operated McEldoon's Grocery Store from
1940-1952. She later worked at Verna's and The Villa, women's clothing
stores in Clear Lake. She enjoyed knitting, sports, travel and playing
cards and Bingo with her good friends at the Lakeland and Park
Apartments. She was a member of the Christian Church in Clear Lake
and a former member of Eastern Star.
She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Larry (Ruth Ann) Knoll,
Mason City, Mrs. Robert (Karen) Humphrey, Clear Lake, and
Mrs. Doug (Paula) Juhl of Waldorf, Md.; a daughter-in-law,

Rosie G. Christiansen
Mrs. Rosie G. Christiansen, 77, of Clear Lake, died Monday,
Feb. 6, 1995, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit,
Mason City, Iowa. Funeral services were held Thursday, Feb. 9,
at Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Kermit Roisen
officiating. Interment was in the Clear Lake Cemetery, Clear Lake.
The family suggests memorials in her name.
Rosie was born May 1, 1917, on a farm by Meservey, Iowa, in
Franklin County, the daughter of Ben and Sena (Ahrenholtz)
Vierkant. She attended rural school in Wisner Township.

On Nov. 11, 1945, she married Floyd (Smokey) Christiansen at the
Reformed Church Parsonage, Meservey. They farmed north of
Clear Lake until 1960 when they moved to Clear Lake.
Rosie loved to sew, make quilt tops for the church, and was a
member of Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake.
She is survived by a sister, Alice Esk, Clear Lake; three brothers,
Bernard Vierkant, Jacksonville, Texas, George Vierkant, Glenville,
Minn., and Henry Vierkant, Mason City, Iowa; several nieces and
nephews; a special friend, Verbena Friesleben, Clear Lake.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1987;
one sister, Grace Harms; and a brother Herman Vierkant.
Organist Karen Harthan accompanied soloist Marilyn Sadler.
Pallbearers were Rex Friesleben, LaVerne Lee, David Christiansen,
Steve Hammond, Bernie Vierkant, Robert Christiansen.
Gerald W. "Red" Smit
Gerald W. "Red" Smit, 62, of La Porte City, Iowa,
died Tuesday, Feb. 7, 1995, at home.
Funeral services were held Friday, Feb. 10, at American Lutheran
Church of LPC with the Rev. Laurel Nordin, Interim Pastor and
Rev. Otto J. Reitz, former pastor of American Lutheran Church
officiating. Interment was in the West View Cemetery of LPC.

Ralph Maxwell Smith
R. Max (Ralph Maxwell) Smith, 83, of Clear Lake, died
Monday, Feb. 13, 1995, at the Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake.
Funeral services were held Friday, Feb. 17, at the Clear Lake
United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Fred Lewis officiating.
The body was cremated, and interment will be in the Clear Lake
Cemetery at a later date. The family suggests memorials to the
Salvation Army, Russ Pearson Adult Day Care Center, Mason City,
or the United Methodist Church, Clear Lake.
R. Max Smith was born Aug. 27, 1911, at Morris, Minn., the son
of Peter H. Smith and Maude Lena Dexter Smith. He grew up and
attended school in Mason City, Iowa. Max went to work for
Deck Brothers Sporting Goods. Later he worked on the Al-Can
Highway for E.M. Duesenberg, a Clear Lake contractor. After the
project was completed, he worked for and retired from Great Lake
Pipeline Company, now known as Williams Brothers Pipeline Company.
On Oct. 6, 1934, he married Ruth Hanna Miller in Mason City. The
couple lived in Maason City until March 1, 1945, when they moved
to Clear Lake. Max was dearly loved by his wife, children,
grandchildren, relatives and friends. He was a caring and
loving man. Max enjoyed gardening and refinishing furniture.
He is survived by three children, Jane Arevalo and her husband,
Bob, Leavenworth, Kan., Peter N. Smith and his wife, Retta,
Gul Breeze, Fla., and Judy Smith, Seattle, Wash.; six
grandchildren, Alan Arevalo, Robin Arevalo Cradic and her husband,
Kevin, Zachary Smith, Joshua Smith, Corey Smith and Seth Smith;
two great-grandchildren, Steven and Emily Cradic; a brother,
Dexter A. Smith, Peoria, Ariz.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ruth;
and his brother, Earle Smith.
Henry H. Schoneman
Henry H. Schoneman, 96, Clear Lake, died Saturday,
Feb. 11, 1995, at Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 18, at Zion Lutheran
Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dean Hess officiating.
A graveside service was held at the Pleasant View Cemetery,
Thornton, Iowa. The family suggests memorials in his name.
Henry was born Jan. 10, 1899 in Thornton, Iowa, the son of
Hans Schoneman and Elsie Marie (nee) Peterson Schoneman.
He attended school in rural Thornton and helped on the family farm.
On Jan. 9, 1922 he married Mathilda Jorgensen. The couple owned
and operated the Swaledale Restaurant and Grocery Store for
eight years before moving to Clear Lake in March of 1943. They
moved to Clear Lake, where he operated Schoneman Insurance Agency
until his retirement in 1963. His wife preceded him in death
July 11, 1961.
In January of 1963 he married Louise Barkhurst at Zion Lutheran
Church Clear Lake. She died Aug. 7, 1984.
Henry loved to travel, play pool and was an avid baseball fan.
He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, and the
Clear Lake Senior Citizens Center.
He is survived by a daughter, Geraldine Polsdofer and her
husband, Jim, Rockwell, Iowa; a daughter-in-law,
Gladys Schoneman, Clear Lake; seven grandchildren,
Nancy Kerr, Greenville, Texas, Mark Schoneman, Houston, Texas,
Diane Romel, Lava Hot Springs, Idaho, Paul Schoneman, Garner,
Iowa, Larry Polsdofer, San Jose, Calif., Ed Polsdofer, Dallas,
Texas, and Janet Alger, Clear Lake; 18 great-grandchildren; and
three great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two wives; a son,
Roger, in 1983; two brothers, Lauritz and William Schoneman;
and five sisters, Christina, Marie, Henrietta, Elisa and Sena.
Honorary pallbearers were Larry Polsdofer, Mark Schoneman,
Terry Polsdofer, Greg Ye95, at the North Iowa Mercy Health
Center East, Mason City.
Funeral services were held Friday, Feb. 17, at Redeemer Lutheran
Church, Ventura, with the Rev. Daird W. Korth officiating.
Burial was in the Clear Lake City Cemetery.
Marie Elva Anderson
Marie Elva Anderson, was born Feb. 29, 1917, the daughter
of Ben F. and Nettie Mabel (Griffen) Greiman, on a farm in
Liberty Township, Hancock County. She was baptized and confirmed
at Peace Reformed Church, south of Garner. Marie attended rural
schools of Liberty Township and graduated from Klemme High School
in 1934.

On Feb. 24, 1937, she married Dale Anderson at Mason City. They
farmed southwest of Clear Lake until 1988, when they moved to
Mason City. Marie enjoyed flower gardening, quilting, sewing,
cooking and antiques. Her love for her family and interest in
their activities was very important to Marie.
She was a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church, Ventura and
Dorcas Society. She was a former 4-H Leader for Daughter's of
the Land.
She is survived by her husband, Dale Anderson,
Mason City; two daughters, Virginia Ames and her husband,
William, Rockwell and Dora Jean Mueller and her husband,
Fredrich, Mason City; six grandchildren, Susan Adams,
Rockwell, Patty Lane, Belmond, Pamela Haukoos, Lakeville, Minn.,
Kristi Hebel, Mason City, Brad Cronk and Linda Mueller,
both of Coralville; four great-grandchildren,
Nathan and Paul Adams and Kirsten and Anders Haukoos;
her sisters and brother, Dorothy Wilson and her husband,
George, Swaledale, Walter Greiman and his wife, Dorothy,
Milan, Mo., Donna Finders and her husband, Richard, Glendale,
Ariz., and Nels Flagler, North Phoenix, Ariz.; two sisters-in-law,
Louise Q. Greiman, Garner and Ardisce Greiman, Mason City.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a grandson,
Danny Ames; a sister, Grace Greiman in infancy; and
two brothers, Floyd Greiman and Verne Greiman.
Ushers were Wilbert Nuehring and Dorance Rosendahl.
Honorary pallbearers were Roger Neuberger, John Schwichtenberg,
Wayne Toppin, Roy Schumacher, Michael Smith and Michael Carrot.
Pallbearers were Michael Adams, Jerry Lane, Peter Haukoos,
Michael Hebel, Brad Cronk and David Greiman.
Glenn Weston Bier
Glenn Weston Bier, 70, of Clear Lake, died Thursday,
Feb. 16, 1995, at the Muse-Norris Hospice In-Patient Unit in
Mason City, Iowa.
Funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 20, at the
United Methodist Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Fred Lewis
officiating. Burial was in Amsterdam Cemetery, Goodell, Iowa.
The family suggests memorials be directed to the Glenn Weston
Bier Memorial Fund.
Glenn Weston Bier was born Sept. 20, 1924, in Belmond, Iowa,
the son of Henry and Priscilla (Pals) Bier. He graduated from
Belmond High School in 1943. He served in the United States Army
from January 1944 to June 24, 1946. He was a veteran of World War II.

On July 27, 1947, he married Ardes V. Polsdofer at the
Little Brown Church, Nashua, Iowa. The couple farmed in
Goodell, Iowa, area for 21 years before moving to Garner and
later Clear Lake in 1974. Glenn was employed by the Iowa
Department of Transportation for 15 and one-half years.
His hobbies included gardening, fishing, woodworking and travel.
Glenn was a member of the United Methodist Church, Clear Lake.
He is survived by his wife, Ardes Bier, Clear Lake; two sons,
Ronald Bier and David Bier and his wife, Susan, all of
Mason City; two sisters, Mrs. George (Iva) Beek, Goodell,
and Mrs. Ethel Young, Belmond, Iowa; two brothers,
Lloyd Bier and his wife, Etta Lou, Garner, and Paul Bier,
Belmond, Iowa; two grandchildren, Joshua and Jennifer Bier,
Mason City.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Laura Haupt
and Wanda Bier; two brothers, Lester and Warren Bier.
Organist Mary Jane Reynolds accompanied soloist Robert Riggs.
Pallbearers were Dan Jackson, Mark Harthan, Duane Polsdofer,
Lloyd Bier Jr., Pat Sweeny, Randy Hiscock.
Alta B. Matzen
Alta B. Matzen, 94, of Clear Lake, died Saturday,
Feb. 18, 1995, at the Good Shepherd Care Center, Mason City, Iowa.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 21, at the
United Methodist Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Fred Lewis
officiating. Burial was in the Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.
The family suggests memorials in her name.
Alta was born Jan. 13, 1901, on a farm in rural Rockwell, Iowa,
the daughter of Broudeson Nielsen and Ann Nielsen (nee) Bohnson.
She attended rural school.
On Nov. 29, 1922, she married Paul H. Matzen in rural Rockwell.
The couple lived northeast of Mason City, in Falls Township,
and farmed. In 1952, they moved to Greenfield, Mo., where they
raised chickens. They moved to the Clear Lake and Ventura
area in the late 1970s. She moved to the Good Shepherd Care Center
in Mason City in 1990. Alta enjoyed playing cards, especially 500,
Kings in the Corner and Rook.
She is survived by two daughters, June Ransom and her husband,
Keith, Ventura, and Marjorie Walls and her husband, Don,
Clear Lake; a son, Paul A. Matzen Jr., Manly, Iowa; a sister,
Eleanor Green, Clear Lake; 10 grandchildren, Nancy Gerardi,
Julie Holloway, Duane Ransom, Doug Ransom, Richard Walls,
Cindy Washburn, Steve Matzen, Scott Matzen, Daryle Matzen
and Darla Matzen; 12 great-grandchildren; and one
great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1990; two grandchildren,
Gary Ransom and Dixie Walls; eight sisters, Mabel Peterson ....
