Virginia Graham White
Virginia Graham White Zinn

   Virginia Graham White, 76, Robbinsdale, Minn., died Thursday, July 13, 1995, at her home.

   Funeral services were held Friday, July 28, at Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church, Minneapolis, Minn. Inurnment will be held Oct. 6, 1995, at West Point, Ill.
   
   Virginia was born Oct. 6, 1918, at her parent's home one mile south of Bowen, Ill., the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl G. White. After graduating from Bowen High School, she attended what is now Western Illinois State University at Macomb.

   On Feb. 19, 1939 she married Robert Zinn at Bowen Methodist Church. She followed the example of her parents and was always actively involved in the life of the Methodist Church. While residing in Clear Lake, she was a youth counselor for several years. In addition to a busy schedule with the youth, she found time to be an active member of the Women's Society. It was at Clear Lake that she was awarded a life membership in the Women's Society. Outside the church she was busily engaged in Beta Sigma Phi.

   After moving to Minneapolis in June 1962, Virginia and Bob joined Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church. Here they worked with the youth, assisted with the serving of community meals, and actively participated in the Double Club. Virginia was a sponsor of the university of Minnesota chapter of Kappa Phi Club;. She was employed by Fanny
Farmer for 18 years where she was a sales clerk and later store manager.

   She is survived by her husband, Robert; a daughter, Patricia Wentworth, Austin, Texas; a son, Harry C. Zinn and wife, Lynn, Ft. Collins, Colo.; four grandchildren, Aaron E. Wentworth, Nathan B. Wentworth, David G. Zinn, and Catherine Ann Zinn; two sisters, Ruth Maurer, Bloomington, Ill., Joan Eggert, Mankato, Minn.; a brother, Earl Granville
White, Titusville, Fla., and an aunt, Velma Williamson, Morton, Ill.

   She was preceded in death by her sister, Katherine.


  
Evelyn Blanche (Wallace) Grant
Evelyn Blanche Grant (nee) Wallace

     Evelyn Blanche Grant, 99, of Clear Lake, died Sunday, July 30, 1995, at Heritage Care Center, Mason City.

   Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 1, at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Kermit Roisen of Zion Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial was in Allegheny County Memorial Park Cemetery, Allison Park, Penn.

   Evelyn Blanche Grant was born May 25, 1896 in Sewicley Heights, Penn., the daughter of David Wallace and 
Margaret Anne Wallace (nee) McCoy. She attended schools in Sewicley and Commercial College in Pittsburgh, Penn., and then worked at Crucible Steel Company for five years.

   On June 23, 1920, she married James D. Grant. To this union one daughter, Isobel was born. In 1949 the family moved to North Hills Area where she lived until her husband passed away in 1957. In 1959, she moved to Beatrice, Neb., where she was active in the St. John's Lutheran Church and was active in the Guild and Auxiliary of the Lutheran Hospital where she did volunteer work in the geriatric ward and gift shop. She then moved to Clear Lake with her daughter, Mrs. Don (Isobel) Boyer and cared for her until her death in 1976. She loved music and flowers.

   She is survived by several nieces and many close friends.

   She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; daughter; one grandson; four brothers; and four sisters; and many nieces.

Gerald Emerson Curphy

   Gerald Emerson Curphy, 95, of Mason City, died Sunday, Aug. 6, 1995 at I.O.O.F. Home, Mason City.

   Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday), Aug. 9, at the Ward Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. 4th St., Clear Lake, with the Pastor Charles Williams of the Clear Lake Congregational Church officiating. Burial will be in Clear Lake Cemetery.

   Gerald was born Jan. 5, 1900, in Montour, Iowa, the son of 
Walter W. Curphy and Florence Luella (nee) Curtis. On Dec. 27, 1919, he married Myrtle Roberts in Des Moines.

   Gerald grew up in Montour and graduated from Montour High School and attended Capitol City Community College. He worked at the Des Moines National Bank and Peoples Savings Bank, Des Moines. Gerald owned and operated Curphy Auto Supply in Clear Lake for 50 years until retiring and moving to Arkansas with his wife and Joe Grady. They returned to Clear Lake and he sold Mason Shoes until 1984 when he moved into the I.O.O.F. Home in Mason City.

   He was a member of the Clear Lake Congregational Church, a 65 member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge, a 60 year member of the Masons, and a 50 year member of the Eastern Star.

   He is survived by many nieces and nephews.
   
   He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two brothers; and two sisters.


  
Steve Sheldon Clark

   Steve Sheldon Clark, 90, of Clear Lake, died Thursday, Aug. 3, 1995, at Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake.

   Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 7,  at the United
Methodist Church in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Fred Lewis officiating. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

   The family suggests memorials in his name.

   Steve Sheldon was born March 20, 1905, in Clear Lake, the son of Thaddeus Sheldon Clark and Jennie Hammond Clark. He attended Grant Township School and later went to work for the Matt Olson Grocery Store in Clear Lake. His other business experiences included starting a restaurant across from City Park in Clear Lake and working for a Mason
City cleaners.

   On March 23, 1927 he married Myrna Erickson in Hampton, Iowa. The couple moved to Gary, Ind., where they were in the restaurant and grocery business. They returned to Clear Lake in 1947 and operated Clark's Sport and Hobby Shop. He continued in the business until retirement in 1971.

   His hobbies included skeet shooting and attending gun shows. He loved the out-of doors, hunting, fishing and boating on Clear Lake. He was very fond of his dog.

   Steve was a member of the Clear Lake United Methodist Church and a lifelong member of the National Rifleman Association.

   He is survived by his wife, Myrna, Clear Lake; and many nieces and nephews.
   
   He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Frank Clark; a sister, Fern Richard; two step-brothers; and three step-sisters.


 
Sharon D. Sammis
Sharon D. Sammis (nee) Deets

     Sharon D. Sammis, 52, of Nora Springs, died Thursday, Aug. 3, 1995.  Her body was cremated. There was no visitation or services held. Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, was in charge of arrangements.

   Memorials may be made to the Cousteau Society, in memory of Sharon D. Sammis.

   Sharon was born Aug. 12, 1942, in Nora Springs, the daughter of Ward W. Deets and Saddie E. Deets (nee) Young.  She was married to George Sammis in 1963.

   Sharon grew up in Clear Lake and graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1960. She lived for short periods of time in Kansas City, Ks., and New York City, N.Y., before returning to the Clear Lake area in 1968.

   Sharon was a stockholder and handled export sales for Mach III, Mason City, for 25 years until retiring in 1992. After retirement she stayed on the board of directors as a consultant.  She was an avid reader and a world-wide traveler.  She enjoyed raising American Saddlebread horses.

   She was a member of American Saddlebread Association, the Cousteau Society, and the Confederate Air Force of America.

   She is survived by her mother, Sadie Deets, Clear Lake; one son, T.R. Sammis II, Saipan; three brothers, Douglas Deets and his wife, Sarah and their children, Mitch and Jill, Rochester, Minn., Jeffrey Deets and his wife, Ellen, and their children, Dan and Sarah, Burchinal, and Mike Deets and his wife, Betsy, and their children, Matt, Michelle, and Nathan, Clear Lake; one sister, Carolyne Hudson and her husband, 
Wayne, Oakland, Calif.; a special aunt, June Carr, Clear Lake; and numerous other relatives.

   She was preceded in death by her father, Ward Deets; and her parents-in-law, Ted and Thelma Sammis.


 
Cathy Jo "Coke" Paulson
Cathy Jo "Coke" Paulson (nee) Madsen

     Cathy Jo  Coke  Paulson, 45, of Clear Lake, died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 1995, at her home.
   
   Funeral services were held Friday, Aug. 4, at Galilean Lutheran Church, Highway 18 West, with the Pastor John Beck officiating. Burial was in Clear Lake Cemetery.
   
   Cathy Jo was born May 3, 1950, in Charles City, the daughter of Wesley Madsen and Shirley Sutton Madsen. Coke grew up in Charles City and graduated from Charles City High School in 1968. She attended North Iowa Area Community College and graduated from Mason City School of Cosmetology.

   Coke worked in Forest City and Clear Lake as a hairdresser. In recent years she was the volunteer coordinator for Galilean Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, and also attended NIACC. Coke was interested in the arts and painting. She enjoyed crafts, playing cards and reading. She loved spending time with family and friends.

   Cathy was a member of Galilean Lutheran Church and Galilean Lutheran Church Diners Club and various clubs.

   She is survived by two sons, Eric Paulson, Tempe, Ariz., and Bret Paulson, Clear Lake; her parents, Wesley and Shirley Madsen, Charles City; three brothers, Greg Madsen and his wife Beth, Hopkins, Minn., Doug Madsen and his wife, Mary Jane, Waverly, and Rob Madsen and his wife, Gayle, Littleton, Colo.; and many nieces and nephews; and numerous special friends.


  
Linda Lee Nelson Smith
Linda Lee Nelson Smith (nee) Dickirson

   Linda Lee Nelson Smith, 47, of Clear Lake, died Aug. 12, 1995, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

   Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 15, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Kermit Roisen officiating. Burial was in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

   The family of Linda Lee Nelson Smith has requested memorial contributions be made to Hospice of North Iowa in her memory.

   Linda Lee Nelson Smith was born on March 23, 1948, in Mason City, the daughter of James Robert Dickirson and Lorene Kennedy Dickirson. She was baptized at Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake and attended schools in Clear Lake and Lakewood, Calif., graduating from Western High School in Anaheim, Calif. After completing her schooling she moved
back to Clear Lake, moving to Colorado Springs, Colo., and then to Garden City, Mich., in the spring of 1973, where she worked for the Kerr Manufacturing Company in Romulus, Mich., as a Laboratory Account Specialist for 22 years  retiring in July of 1995, due to ill health, moving back to Clear Lake. She enjoyed water skiing, riding Harley Davidson
Motorcycles, shopping and was an avid reader.
   
   She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake and a member of Alinon.
   
   She is survived by her mother and step-father, Lorene and Frank Haddy, Clear Lake; two sons, Darren Robin Nelson and Dustin James Nelson,both of Garden City, Mich.; father to Darren and Dustin is Robert Nelson, Garden City; two brothers, Jeffrey Pierce and his wife, Amy of Rochester, Minn., and Randy Pierce of California; three sisters, Diana Byington and her husband, Tim, Clear Lake, Darcy Dickirson and her fiance, Dan Skellenger, Clear Lake, and Jody Cramer and her husband, John, Medford, Minn.; two sister-in-laws, Jacki Nelson and her husband, Richard, Bloomfield Hills, Mich., and Bettie Burnette and her husband,
Jim, of Westland, Mich.
   
   She was preceded in death by her father; grandparents; and an uncle, Leonard "Dud" Kennedy.

   Pallbearers at the funeral service were Chris Burnette, Rick
Burnette, Marty Pearson, Roland Drew, Greg Knopf and Randy Pals.

   Soloist Linda Nuehring was accompanied by organist Karen
Harthan.


  
Albert E. (Al) Duregger

 
  Albert E. (Al) Duregger, 83, of Clear Lake, died Sunday, Aug. 13, 1995, at the Muse Norris Hospice In-Patient Unit in Mason City, Iowa.
   
   Funeral services were held Wednesday, Aug. 16, at the Ventura United Methodist Church in Ventura, Iowa, with the Rev. David Gobeli officiating. Burial was in the Clear Lake Cemetery, Clear Lake.

   The family suggests memorials be made in his name.

   Albert was born April 11, 1912, in Terra Haute, Ind., the son of Edward (Sr.) Duregger and Alice Hoffman Duregger. At an early age he moved with his parents to a farm in rural Swaledale, Iowa. He attended rural school.

   On Nov. 30, 1933 he married Fannie Rish at the Methodist Church in Clear Lake. The couple farmed until 1937.

   Al was employed at the Perkins Dairy in Clear Lake before going to work for Duesenberg Construction for 35 years as a heavy duty machine mechanic. He retired, but then decided to return to work for Vern Severson, Snyder Construction and Tuttle Asphalt until health reasons forced him to retire at the age of 81.

   His hobbies included camping and he had a special fondness for his dog, Tasha.  Al was a member of the United Methodist Church, Ventura.

   He is survived by his wife, Fannie Duregger, Clear Lake; four children, Karen Nichols and her husband, John, Clear Lake, Dennis Duregger, Clear Lake, Vickie Dietrich, Mason City, and Jolene Boyd and her husband, William, Mason City; six brothers, Fred Duregger and his wife, Helen, New Port News, Va., Virgil Duregger and his wife Jean, Hayward, Calif., Leo "Bud" Duregger and his wife, Edith, Clear Lake, Edward (Jr.) Duregger, and his wife, Sharon, Garner, Iowa, and Larry Borom and his wife, Abby, Orlando, Fla.; four sisters, Gladys Henn, Clear Lake, Mary Avery, Garner, Helen Sorensen,  Alden, Iowa and Irene Sorenson, Santa Monica, Calif.; 16 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

   He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, Venetta Mae Duregger; a daughter, Carol Jean Duregger; a sister, Ida Mae Hill; and an infant brother, Donald Duregger.

   Soloist Rev. Jonathan Swenson was accompanied by organist Pat Treloar at the funeral service.

   Honorary pallbearers were: Barb Melhus, Lisa Nichols, Rene
Duregger, Michelle Dunn, Denise Hall, Kristin Noland, Rebecca DiDena Dietrich, Brant Boyd.

   Active pallbearers were: Steve Wilson, Tim Nichols, Jeff Duregger, Aaron Dietrich, Timothy Dietrich, Benjamin Boyd, Ryan Melhus, Steve Duregger



  
Lawrence Stelter

   Lawrence Stelter, 73, Clear Lake, Friday, Aug. 25, at the Muse-Norris Hospice In-Patient Unit in Mason City, Iowa.

   Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 28, at Zion Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Kermit Rosen officiating.  Burial was at the St. Peter Lutheran Church Cemetery, Toeterville, Iowa.

   The family requests memorials be made in his name.

   Lawrence was born March 15, 1922 on the family farm in Otranto Township, rural Otranto.  He was the son of Gustav Stelter and Mary (nee) Schroeder.  He was baptized April 9, 1922 at St. Peter Lutheran Church at Toeterville and was confirmed March 24, 1934. Lawrence attended Otranto School and graduated from there in May of 1939. On April 4, 1943 he was united in marriage to Gala Anna Bork in Austin, Minn. The coupled lived on the family farm until 1967, when they moved to Clear Lake.

   Lawrence was a 4-H Club leader for a number of years and also served two terms on the Otranto School Board. Lawrence received his real estate license in May 1968. He began his career in real estate with Ris-Van Realty in Clear Lake in 1968 and later was one of the founders of Triad Realty in 1974. He was the first president of the Clear Lake Board of Realtors in 1980 and remained a member until his retirement in 1992.

   He as a member of IOOF Lodge 187 and a past member of the Clear Lake Noon Lions. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan.

   Lawrence was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather to his wife and their families, whom he loved very much. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake.

   He is survived by his wife, Gala, Clear Lake; two sons, Dennis and his wife, Marilyn, Clear Lake, and Daryl (Chip) and his wife, Linda, Lake Mills; two sisters, Mrs. Lucille Larson and Mrs. Bernice Callahan, both of Austin, Minn.; four grandchildren, John Stelter and his wife Debby, Clear Lake, Dave Stelter and friend, Tammy Schiermeister, Clear Lake, Shawn Stelter, Armstrong, Iowa and Sheila Stelter, Lake Mills; two great-grandchildren, Timothy and Taylor.

   He was preceded in death by his parents.

   Organist Karen Harthan accompanied soloist Rev. Jonathan
Swenson.

   Honorary pallbearers were Roger Campbell, Don Dirks, Tom
Nodland, David O Dowd, Shelby Pierce, Louie Schuler.

   Pallbearers were Roger Ritter, Larry Day, Gary Frerichs, Dean Molinsky, Wayne Oberbroeckling, Gary Bork

 
James C. Hanson

   James C. Hanson, 53, of Brandon, S. Dak., died Wednesday, Aug.23, 1995 at Sioux Valley Hospital, of cancer.  Funeral services were held Saturday, Aug. 26, at Chapel Hill Funeral Home. Burial was at the Hills of Rest Memorial Park.

   The family suggests memorials be directed to a special  fund in memory of James C. Hanson at Sioux Vocational Services.

   James was born Oct. 16, 1941, at Mason City, Iowa. He grew up in Clear Lake, graduating from Clear Lake High School in 1960. He attended the University of Iowa where he received his BA in business administration and his masters degree in vocational rehabilitation counseling. On Sept. 8, 1963, he married Julie Erznozinik, at Clear Lake.
   
   He was employed by the Vocational Assessment Center in Oakdale,
Iowa, for five years, served as the director of the Iowa Central
Rehabilitation Industries at Ft. Dodge, Iowa from 1968-1982. The couple
moved to the Sioux Falls area where he served as president of Sioux
Vocational Services from 1982 until present. He was a member of the CASA Board, National ANCOR Board and past president of SD Association of Community Based Program.

   He is survived by his wife, Julie Hanson, Brandon, S. Dak.; 
a son, James Hanson, Sioux Falls, S. Dak.; three daughters, 
Holly Theisen, LeMars, Iowa, Heidi Hanson, Sioux Falls, and 
Heather Wells, New York, NY; three grandchildren; a brother, 
Jon Hanson, Clear Lake; and his mother, Dorothy Rogers, Clear Lake.
