Harold Albert Klatt

Harold Albert Klatt, 76, of Clear Lake, died Wednesday, June 29, 1994, at North Iowa Mercy Health Care Center, east in Mason City.    

Funeral services were held Saturday, July 2, at Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dean Hess officiating.  Burial was in the Clear Lake Cemetery with military graveside honors by the San Juan Marne VFW Post #733 in Mason City.  The Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, was in charge of arrangements.

Harold Albert Klatt was born Sept. 14, 1917, the son of Julius and Bertha (Streich) Klatt in New Hampton, Iowa.  He attended and received his education in the New Hampton Schools. After completing his schooling he helped his family in the family
Bakery Shop in Fredricksburg, Iowa.    

He was united in marriage to Elaine Marie Kluss on Sept. 21, 1940 in Castalia, Iowa.   After their marriage he was inducted in the U.S. Navy serving in the "Seabeas" overseas during World War II in the New Heberdies Islands in the Pacific.    

After his honorable discharge he moved to Cresco, Iowa, where he worked at the Farm Implement Company until 1954, when he moved to Clear Lake, working as a sales representative for Geihl Implement from 1952 to 1958 and for Heimbuch Implement from 1958 until 1969. He also worked as a branch manager for the Lindsey Brothers in Mason City from 1969 until his retirement in 1986.  His wife preceded him in death on Nov. 10, 1987. 

Harold was a very artistic person and did several murals of famous people which won blue ribbons at state and county....

...as Joyce TenHaken, who accompanied soloist Marilyn Sadler.     

Pallbearers were Marion Warren, Carl Husling Jr., Gordon Klatt, Ray Houdek, Richard Handke, Tim Petsche.


Orville Harold Brattrud 

Orville Harold Brattrud, 76, of Clear Lake, formerly of Hanlontown, died Friday, July 1, 1994, at the Americana Health Care Center in Mason City.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 5, at the Grace Lutheran Church in Hanlontown with the Rev. Linda Johnson officiating. Burial was in the Brush Post Cemetery, rural Hanlontown.

Orville Harold Brattrud, was born Aug. 26, 1917, in Hanlontown, the son of George Albert and Agnes Karoline (Overbye) Brattrud. He attended and received his education in the rural Worth County School System. After his schooling he helped on the family farm for several years. Orville entered into the Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake in 1987 and had been a resident of the Americana Health Care Center since April of 1990.

He enjoyed baseball, music and animals. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Hanlontown.

He is survived by one sister, Florence Kallheim and her husband, Johnny, of Ft. Meyers, Fla.; two brothers, Kermeth Brattrud of Hanlontown, and Gaylord Brattrud and his wife, Shirley, Clear Lake; several nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Lawrence Brattrud; and a sister-in-law, Laryn Brattrud ... Pasadena...[?]

Marlyn E. Butz

Marlyn E. Butz, 68, of Clear Lake, died Saturday,  July 2, 1994, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.  Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 5 at Faith Baptist Church, Mason City, with the Rev. Miles M. Grismore officiating.    Burial was in the Clear Lake Cemetery.   

Marlyn E. Butz was born Jan. 20, 1926, in Mason City, the son of Edwin Earl and Alice Nettie (Paul) Butz.  He married Shirley Jean Hamann on Dec. 9, 1945.  She preceded him in death on June 21, 1968. 

He then married Eileen (Howland) Vierkant on Aug. 2, 1969.   

Marlyn grew up in Clear Lake and graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1944. He farmed north of Clear Lake for 45 years.  He earned many honors in music during high school and continued to play the cornet until one year prior to his death.  He and his wife loved traveling, and traveled extensively throughout the U.S. and Canada.  As a young man, Marlyn came to a personal faith in Jesus Christ and this became the guiding influence for his life.

He was an active mmber of Faith Baptist Church.  He is survived by his wife, Eileen Butz, Clear Lake; three sons, David Butz and his wife, Rebecca, Clear Lake, Ronald Butz and his wife, Mary Ann, Sioux City, and Alan Vierkant and his wife, Kari,
Humble, Texas; eight grandche ....


Verlynne Alys Bisgrove

Mrs. Verlynne Alys Bisgrove, 82, of Palm Harbor, Fla., died Oct. 8, 1993.  She was cremated.  Memorial services were held Saturday, July 9, 1994, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake.  Interment will take place in [Santa] Monica, Calif.; two nieces,  Melva Dance, West Hills, Calif. and Marcia Packard, Woodland Hills, Calif.

She was born Sept. 17, 1911, the daughter of Ray and Reva (Young) Andrews.  She attended school in Clear Lake and graduated in 1927. In 1927 she married Leslie Bisgrove in Clear Lake.  They moved to Chicago [ and ] later moved back to the Clear Lake area in 1932. They moved back to Chicago in 1941, and in 1962 moved to
Monroe, Mich.  The couple lived there until 1976, when they moved to Palm Harbor, Fla.  [?]

Verlynne loved to play the piano and organ, and was a member of the Clear Lake Round Robin Club. 

She is survived by her husband, Leslie Bisgrove, Lake Wales, Fla.; two sons, Leslie T. Bisgrove, Lake Wales, Fla., and Larry H. Bisgrove, Clearwater, Fla.; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Bobbie and Ronald Bisgrove.



Clifford (Biff) Hansen

Clifford (Biff) Hansen, 78, of 100 N. 14th St., Clear Lake, died Friday, July 8, 1994, at North Iowa Mercy Health Center east
campus.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 12, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Murley Severtson officiating.

Burial was in the Clear Lake Cemetery.  Military honors were provided by Clear Lake V.F.W. Post No. 4868.

The family suggests memorials in his name.

He was born July 1, 1916, to Hans Peter (H.P.) Hansen and Inger Olsen Hansen, of Ute, Iowa. He received his education in Ute and graduated from Ute High School in 1934.

In April of 1941 he entered the United States Army, serving his country as a Master Sergeant in the Engineer Corps during World War II. He returned home in August of 1945. He and his brother formed a construction company and built many homes in the Clear Lake area.

On Oct. 16, 1948, he married Lois Ann (Lindy) Olsen in Clear Lake.

Clifford joined Henkel Construction Company in 1956 as a carpenter foreman. He retired in 1978 and formed LinCliff Inc., a family business formed around his patented invention.

He enjoyed fishing, sports, gardening and spending time with his family. He was a 50-year member of Carpenters Local 1313 and a Charter member of Clear Lake V.F.W. Post No. 4868.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Ray Hansen; and a daughter, Cathy Marnette Hansen.



John C. DenHartog

Mr. John C. DenHartog, 96, died July 4, 1994, at the I.O.O.F. Home in Mason City.

He was survived by his wife, Lindy, Clear Lake; a daughter, Susan DeVary, Rancho Sante Fe, Calif.; three sons, Vance and his wife, Kimm, Clear Lake, Kevin, Clear Lake, and David, Owatonna, Minn.; five grandchildren: Misty, Lynzy, Nathaniel, Jared and Jake.

Funeral was held Wednesday July 6, at the Chapel of Van Dyk-Duven  Funeral Home, Pella, Iowa, with the Rev. Andy Kamphuis officiating.  Interment was in Oakwood Cemetery, Pella, Iowa.

The family suggests memorials for the Hilltop Manor in Pella.

John DenHartog was born April 11, 1898, near Pella, the son of Cornelius and Anna Veen DenHartog.  He attended the Lower Grove Country grade school near Pella and the Central Academy in Pella.

On Feb. 9, 1922, he was united in marriage to Josena (Josie) DeJong at her parental farm home.  To this union, two children were born, Raymond Glen and Betty Joyce.

He is survived by one son, Raymond DenHartog, and his wife, Jean, Clear Lake; one daughter, Betty Glewen and her husband, Kenneth, Cedar Grove, Wis.; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren; three step-children, Jan Horman and
her husband, Edwin, Dallas, Texas, Sylvia Hoksbergen and her husband, Edward, Sully, Iowa, Bernie J. VanRoekel, Arlington, Texas; nine stst of Leighton, Iowa, for six years, and then moved into Leighton, where John operated a drug-sundry store for 30 years.  In 1959 they moved to Pella at which time John was associated with a distributing business for Pella bologna and cookies and later fishing tackle.

On June 28 1971, Josie passed away.  On May 16, 1972, he was united in marriage to Adrianna VanWyk DeJong.  They made their home at the Pella Manor and were spending the winter in Bradenton, Fla., when she passed away Dec. 17, 1972. On March 18, 1977, John married Sophia Vos VanRoekel.  They moved to the Pella Manor, and then became residents of Hilltop Manor.  Sophia died Feb. 1st.

He was a non-resident member of the First Reformed Church in Pella.

John was the last surviving member of his original family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three wives; four brothers, William DenHartog, Egbert DenHartog, Simon DenHartog and Henry DenHartog; and a sister, Mrs. Hilda (Arie) Klyn.

Pallbearers were Michael Den Hartog, Jerry Den Hartog, Eric Glewen, Cornie DenHartog, Harold DenHartog, Francis DeJong.

Jeffry Richard Beach

Jeffry Richard Beach, 23, of Clear Lake, died Sunday, July 10, 1994, in a car accident in Polk County, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 14, at 11 a.m. at the St. Patricks Catholic Church in Clear Lake with the Msgr. Joseph J. Slepicka officiating. Burial will be in Ridgelawn Cemetery in Truman, Minn. Graveside services are set for Thursday at 3:30 p.m.

Visitation will begin today (Wednesday), July 13, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. 4th St., Clear Lake. A Knights of Columbus rosary will be said at 6 p.m. Wednesday, with a scriptural wake service at 7 p.m.

Jeffry Richard Beach was born June 11, 1971 in Monticello, Minn., the son of Richard and Sharon (Zehnder) Beach. He graduated from Newman High School in 1989 with the distinction of begin named salutatorian. While at Newman, he especially enjoyed playing football for the Knights.

He earned a degree with honors in computer science from Iowa State University. He had recently accepted a position with Eli Lilly Pharmaceutical Co. in Indianapolis, Ind.

Jeff loved to ride his Harley motorcycle, canoe and go to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. He also enjoyed downhill skiing and fishing.

He was a member of St. Patricks Catholic Church in Clear Lake.

He is survived by his parents, Richard and Sharon Beach, Clear Lake; a sister, Joan Bettag and her husband, Eric, of Chicago, Ill.; three brothers, Jerome, of Denver, Colo.; Jason and James, both of Clear Lake; and his maternal grandmother, Christine Zehnder, Truman, Minn.



Ruth M. Smith

Ruth M. Smith, 84, of Clear Lake, died Sunday, July 10, 1994, at North Iowa Mercy Health Centers east campus.

Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday), July 13, at 2 p.m. at the Clear Lake United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Fred Lewis officiating. She will be cremated and interment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery at a later time.

The family suggests memorials to the United Methodist Church or the Parkinsons Foundation.

She was born April 9, 1910 in Clear Lake, the daughter of Nathaniel Brown Miller and Hattie Amelia Leach Miller. She grew up in Emory, Iowa, and attended Mason City High School. She graduated from Hamilton Business College and worked for the W.L. Patton Insurance Company in Mason City for 11 years.

On Oct. 6, 1935 she married R. Max Smith in Mason City, Iowa. The couple lived in Mason City until March 1, 1945 when they moved to Clear Lake.

Ruth was a dearly loved and treasured wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend. She took up sculpting at the age of 60 and became known as "The Grandma Moses of the Clay Pits." Ruth touched the lives of many people with her kindness, gentleness, humor and with her sculptures, the majority of which were biblical characters. Her busts of Mary, Joseph and the Christ Child, along with John Wesley, reside in the Clear Lake United Methodist Church where Ruth was a member.

She is survived by her husband, Max, of Clear Lake; three children, Jane Arevalo and her husband, Bob of Leavenworth, Kan., Pete Smith and his wife, Retta, of Gulf Breeze, Fla., and Judy Smith, of Seattle, Wash.; six grandchildren, Alan Arevalo, Robin Arevalo Cradic, Zachary Smith, Josh Smith, Corey Smith and Seth Smith; and two great-grandchildren, Stephen Cradic and Emily Cradic.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Merle Miller and Harold Miller.



Irma Marie Gross

Irma Marie Gross, 91, of Mason City, died Wednesday, July 13, 1994, at her home.     

A funeral Mass was held Saturday, July 16, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Mason City, with the Rev. James E. Hayes and the Rev. Msgr. Joseph J. Slepicka officiating.   Burial was in Elmwood St. Joseph Cemetery.  A scriptural service was held Friday, July 15, at Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel.  The service was conducted by Mr. Rodney Blaul.   

Memorials may be given to Hospice of North Iowa in memory of Irma Marie Gross. 


Benny O. Smith

Mr. Benny O. Smith, 68, of Clear Lake, died Monday, July 18, 1994, at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East Campus, Mason City, Iowa.   

Funeral services were held Thursday, July 21, at Zion Lutheran Church,  Clear Lake, with the Rev. Murley Severtson officiating.  Interment was in the Clear Lake Cemetery, Clear Lake.    

The family suggests memorials to the Benny O. Smith Memorial Fund.   

Benny was born Jan. 31, 1926, in rural Clear Lake, the son of Charles Smith and Dolly (nee) Shaffer Smith. 

He graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1943.  He served in the Army during World War II.  He was a rural mail carrier in the Clear Lake area for over 34 years and also farmed south of Clear Lake.    

On April 14, 1962 he married Darlene Nelson at Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake.  He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, life member of the Clear Lake V.F.W. and a member of National Rifleman's Association.    

He is survived by his wife, Darlene Smith, Clear Lake; a daughter, Shari Smith, Clear Lake; a son Bennett Smith, Iowa City, Iowa; one aunt Mrs. Alta Bunting and her husband, Arvid, Clear Lake.  

He was preceded in death by his parents.    

Organist Mary Jane Reynolds accompanied soloists Larry Shaffer and Terri Corsello.    Honorary pallbearers Francis Flusek, Dave Kennedy, Ronald Hendricks, Walt Leslie, Carroll Anderson, Nels Larsen, Wayne Oltrogge, Louis Kofoed and Art Ashland.    

Pallbearers were Shane Noll, Dennis Davis, Marvin Miller, Randy Williams, Gary Nelson, Duane Nelson.

Edythe B. Hagen

Edythe B. Hagen, 82, Clear Lake, died Monday, July 18, 1994, at the Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake.

Edythe B. Hagen was born on Feb. 21, 1912, in Mitchell, S. D., the daughter of Cornelius Lura and Anna Holland Lura.

She was baptized in the Lutheran faith and moved to Thompson, Iowa, in 1918, where she received her education. On Feb. 22, 1936, she was united in marriage to Harvey Hagen in Forest City. The couple made their home in Linden Township for their entire marriage. She still held her membership at the Lutheran Church in Thompson and affiliate membership at the United Methodist Church in Crystal Lake. She was a member of the Linden Ladies Club and enjoyed flowers, gardening and knitting.

She is survived by her son, Dennis Hagen and his wife, Pat, of Forest City; a daughter, Alyce Wilson and her husband, Larry, of Clear Lake; four grandchildren, Pamela Madsen and her husband, Bill, of St. Paul, Minn., Deborah Geddes and her husband, Greg, of Las Vegas, Nev., and Denise Hagen....

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband; and three brothers, Leonard, Curt....

Funeral services were held Thursday, July 21, at the United Methodist Church, Crystal Lake, Iowa. Interment was at Rose Hill Cemetery, Thompson, Iowa.

Edythe began working at Fryar Farms in Forest City in 1961. Following that, she began working at Winnebago Industries and remained there for 25 years. She also worked at R.S.V.P. in Clear Lake. Harvey died in 1989. Edythe moved to Clear Lake ....

Pallbearers were Vernon Hansmeier, Terry Olsen, Kevin Thompson, Dennis Larson, Eugene Thompson, Lynn Wooge.



** John R. Kunz

Mr. John R. Kunz, 45, of Clear Lake, died Sunday, July 25, 1994, at his home.

Following cremation, interment will be held Friday, July 29, at 2 p.m. at Elmwood Cemetery, Mason City, Iowa, with Pastor Will Hunsacker officiating.

Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, is in charge of services. There will be no visitation. The family suggests memorials be made to the John R. Kunz Memorial Fund.

John was born Oct. 4, 1948 in Mason City, the son of Dr. Raymond Kunz, Jr., and Jean (nee) Bagley Kunz. He graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1967. He earned a bachelor of science degree in liberal arts at the University of Iowa and went on to graduate from the U of I College of Pharmacy in 1975.

Following his education, he moved back to Clear lake and was employed as a pharmacist at Casey Drug from 1975-1982. He then joined St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Mason City as a staff pharmacist. He was later promoted to senior pharmacist supervisor at North Iowa Mercy Health Centers east campus. He also was a relief pharmacist throughout North Iowa.

He was a certified instructor for the North Iowa Area Community College/Regional Health Education Center. He served as an instructor for paramedics, CPR and other EMS related fields. He also was an Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Iowa Affiliate, instructor. His other certifications included Iowa Firefighter I and EMT-I.

He was a member of the American Society of Hospital Pharmacists, National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians, National Federal Professional Qualifications Board, Clear Lake Fire Department and Clear Lake Verity Masonic Lodge.

He married Nancy Lee on Dec. 22, 1990, in Clear Lake.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Lee-Kunz, Clear Lake; five children, Stacie Kunz, Rick Kunz and Ryan Lee Kunz, all of Clear Lake, Tim Kunz, Denver, Colo., and Rachel Kunz, San Antonio, Texas; an uncle, John Kunz and his wife, Max, Overland Park, Kan.; his in-laws, Herb and Vivian Ross, Dows, Iowa; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Mike and Sylvia Armour and family, Belmond, Iowa; two grandchildren, Alexa and Dillon Anthony, Mason City, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents; parents; and one infant son. 


** Larry Miller

Larry Miller, 61, died Thursday, July 14, 1994, of a heart attack.

Mr. Miller was a native of Clear Lake, and continued to maintain a summer residence at Dodges Point. Larry Miller was a 1950 graduate of Clear Lake Highs Club. Mr. Miller went on to attend Military Intelligence School in Washington, DC and finished his education graduating from the University of Iowa with a Political Science Degree in 1958.

Mr. Miller held a Commercial Drivers License, Pilots and Auto Racing Licenses. He was a member of the Board of Bankers Trust, Fareway Stores, Ruan Center Corporation, Truck Renting and Leasing Association, American Truck Association Executive Council--Policy and Finance Committee, and was Treasurer of the ATA Foundat School. He attended North Iowa Area Community College leaving to enroll in the Navy Cadet Program in 1952. He was promoted to the rank of First Lieutenant as a United State Marine Corps jet fighter pilot and achieved membership in the coveted Mach Buster....

He is survived by his wife, Jean, Des Moines, Iowa; daughters, Joy and Kim, both of Arlington, Va.; a son Rex, of Des Moines; his mother, Oneita; and a special aunt, Carmen Vawter, both of Dodges Point, Clear Lake.

[He was preceded in death ...] by his father, Lloyd W. Miller; and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Dieterlen, and Mr. and Mrs. Henry J. Miller.
