Suzanne Louise Legge
Suzanne Louise Legge, 59, of Cedar Falls, formerly of Garner, died
Tuesday, Nov. 29, 1994, at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 3, at Cedar Valley Community
Church in Cedar Falls. Burial was Sunday, Dec. 4 at Concord Township
Cemetery in Garner. A memorial service was held Dec. 4 at the
Evangelical Free Church in Clear Lake with the Rev. Larry Yeoman
officiating.
Suzanne Louise Legge, daughter of Paul W. Kuns and Sylvia (nee) Hall
Kuns was born July 3, 1935 in Forest City. She graduated from Buffalo
Center High School in 1953 and received her teaching certificate from
Iowa State Teachers College in 1954. On Aug. 3, 1956, she was married
to James Oliver Legge at Forest City. They farmed southwest of Garner
until her husbands death in 1980.
She received her B.A. Degree in 1974 and her Masters Degree in 1991,
both from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. She had
taught school in Scarville from 1954-56 and at the Kanawha Christian
School from 1969-84. She also taught school at Cedar Valley Community
Church School and was a Guidance Counselor at Edison, Jewett and
Lincoln Elementary Schools in Waterloo. She had been Singles Director
and was active at Cedar Valley Community Church in Cedar Falls.
She is survived by her children, Terry Legge and his wife, Sue, of
Grimes, Michael Legge and his wife, Monica, of Garner, Robert Legge
and his wife, Ruth, of Garner and Lisa Legge of Minneapolis, Minn.;
nine grandchildren; her mother, Sylvia Kuns, Clear lake; two sisters,
Lois West of St. Paul, Minn., and Elaine Kuns of Clear Lake; two
brothers, David Kuns of Des Moines and Stuart Kuns and his wife, Judy,
of Ventura; and a special friend, Jim Collins, Lakeside, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Legge; a grandson,
Matthew M. Legge; and her father, Paul Kuns.
Lena E. Powers
Lena E. Powers, 67, of Mason City, Iowa, died Wednesday, Nov. 30,
1994, at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center East Campus, Mason City.
She was cremated. Private memorial services were held at the Ward-Van
Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with the Rev. James E. Hayes of St.
Joseph Catholic Church, Mason City, officiating.
Lena was born in King County Brooklyn, New York, on March 23, 1927,
the daughter of Michael Esposito and Gabriella (nee) Santori Esposito.
She grew up in the Brooklyn area, and Grand Rapids, Mich. area, and
enjoyed her last 30 years living in Kailua, Hawaii. Due to ill health
she moved to Mason City to live closer to her daughter.
She is survived by a daughter, Helena Albers and her husband, Steve,
Clear Lake; one son Edward Powers and his wife, Liz, Grand Rapids,
Mich.; a brother Joseph Esposito, Long Island, New York; three sisters
Emma Borriello, Nancy Gentile and her husband, Paul, all of Brooklyn,
New York, and Grace Conti and her husband, Frank, Cresco, Penn.; five
grandchildren, Daniel Powers, Michelle Powers, Jack Meggers, Theresa
Meggers and Autumn Meggers.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sons Harold Powers and
David Powers; two brothers Ralph Esposito and John Esposito; and one
sister Mary Colella.

Shaun G. Septer
Shaun G. Septer, 16, of Hills, Iowa, died Tuesday, Dec. 6, 1994, at
the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, following
an automobile accident.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 10, at the St. Joseph
Catholic Church in Hills. The Rev. Roy Nilsen officiated. Burial was
in the St. Stanislaus Cemetery in Hills.
The George L. Gay Hills Chapel was in charge of the services.
Memorials may be made to the Hills Fire Department and First Responder
or Hills Ball Association.
Shaun was born May 5, 1978 in Dubuque, Iowa, the son of David Septer
and Kathleen (nee) Dyre Septer.
He was a student at West High School, Iowa City. He was involved with
baseball, Saturday Jr. Bowling League at Colonial Lane and had been a
participant representing the Hills Fire Department in the Water Ball
Fights.
Survivors include his parents, Kathy and Dave Septer; a sister, Tanya
Septer, all of Hills; grandparents, Eileen and H.G. Septer of Ottumwa,
Colleen and Jim Dyre, Clear Lake; great-grandparents, Viva and
Beatrice Dyre, Louise Caldwell, all of Mason City.
Charlotte Janet Hamblin
Charlotte Janet Hamblin, 86, of Clear Lake, died Wednesday, Dec. 7,
1994, at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.
Funeral services were held Friday, Dec. 9, at the Evangelical Free
Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dave VanWingerden and the Rev. Larry
Yeoman officiating. Burial was in the Clear Lake Cemetery.
Charlotte Janet Hamblin was born Nov. 7, 1908, in Fertile, Iowa, the
daughter of Halvor Stevens and Lena (nee) Halvorson Stevens.
She attended and received her education in the Fertile School System
graduating from Fertile High School in 1925. She also attended Cedar
Falls Teachers College. She was united in marriage to Glenn Hamblin on
March 19, 1930, in Mason City. He preceded her in death in 1980. In
1954, they moved to a farm near Joice, farming there until 1957 when
they moved to a farm southeast of Ventura where they continued to farm
until her husbands death, moving to Clear lake in 1980, where she
lived with her daughter.
She also was a nurses aide at Mercy Hospital for a short time.
Charlotte had been a resident of the Good Shepherd Care Center since
1992. She enjoyed volunteer work at the Opportunity Village, formerly
Handicap Village, in Clear Lake, gardening, but her great love and
enjoyment was her church and helping out any way she could.
Charlotte was a member of the Evangelical Free Church in Clear Lake
and the Clear Lake Police Ladies Auxiliary.
She is survived by her daughter, Marcia Dyer of Clear Lake; several
Besides her husband, she was also preceded in death by her parents;
one granddaughter, Faith Maranatha Dyer; four sisters; and two
brothers.
Organist Sally Frampton accompanied Pastor Larry and in his name to
Hospice of North Iowa.
Pallbearers were Don Neuberger, Bill Kennedy, David Rosendahl, Dean
Heimdal and Dorance Rosendahl.
John A. Brandt, Sr.
John A. Brandt, Sr., Clear Lake, died Wednesday, Dec. 7, 1994, at the
Good Shepherd Care Center, Mason City, Iowa.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 10, at the St. Patricks
Catholic Church, Clear Lake, with the Msgr. Joseph J. Slepicka
officiating. Interment was in the Clear Lake Cemetery, Clear Lake. A
Scriptural Wake service was held Friday, Dec. 9, at the Ward-Van Slyke
Funeral Home, Clear Lake.
John was born Feb. 4, 1915 in Wesley, Iowa, the son of Gustav and Ella
Brandt.
On Nov. 28, 1937 he was united in marriage to Opal M. Thompson, of
Kensett, Iowa, at the St. Patricks Catholic Church, Clear Lake. They
farmed south of Clear Lake until the early forties when they moved
into Clear Lake. He worked for Clear Lake Auction until his retirement
in 1979.
He is survived by his son, John Brandt, and his wife, Suzanne, Clear
Lake; three grandchildren, Jeffrey Brandt, and his wife, Deanette,
Riverton, Wyo., Scott Brandt and his wife, Sue, Clear Lake, and Robin
Ulve and her husband, Michael, Clear Lake; three great-grandchildren,
Rachel Brandt, Amber and Bayley Ulve; three sisters, Mrs. Helen
Henderson, Mason City, Iowa, Katheryn Fluhrer and her husband, Verle,
Manly, Iowa, Mary Lou Hannafan and her husband, A.J., Clinton, Iowa;
one brother, Gus Brandt, Mason City, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one brother, Louis
Brandt; one sister, Verna Mae Beeler; and one grandchild, Thomas John
Brandt.
Donald Gabrielson
Mr. Donald Gabrielson, 79, of Clear Lake, died Wednesday, Dec. 7,
1994, at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East Campus, Mason City, Iowa.
Funeral services were held held Saturday, Dec. 10, at Zion Lutheran
Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Murley Severtson officiating.
Interment was in the Clear Lake Cemetery, Clear Lake.
The family suggests memorials in his name.
Donald Gabrielson was born March 13, 1915 in Webster City, Iowa, the
son of Martin Gabrielson and Florence (nee) Eddy Gabrielson.
He graduated from Ellsworth High School, Ellsworth, Iowa, in 1934.
On Jan. 16, 1938 he was united in marriage to Arlie Heng. They farmed
at Radcliff, Iowa, and Mason City, and moved to Clear Lake in 1970.
Mr. Gabrielson served as past trustee, parish council and president of
Lutheran Brotherhood of Zion Lutheran Church. He was past director of
rural school, member of Clear Lake I.O.O.F. Lodge and Rotary.
He is survived by his wife, Arlie Gabrielson of Clear Lake; a daughter
Jo Lake, Treasure Island, Florida; one son, David Gabrielson, St.
Petersburg, Fla.; two brothers, Glenn Gabrielson, Algona, Iowa, and
Gerald Gabrielson, Forest Lake, Minn.; three sisters Gaynell Clark,
Ames, Iowa, Florence Zimmerline, Greenfield, Iowa, and Dorothy
Anderson, Starbuck, Minn.; five grandchildren Kimberly Smith, Eldora,
Iowa; Timothy Yocum, Story City, Iowa, Paul Gabrielson, Las Vegas,
Nev., Janeice Cummings and Jodie Chute, both of Auroa, Colo.; seven
great-grandchildren, Ashley, Aaron, Rebekah, Kristina, Rachael and
Lauren Smith, Eldora, Iowa; Shay Cummings, Colorado Springs, Colo.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother John
Gabrielson.

Jasperson, Willard Henderson, Dean Moffett.
Arthur Carlson
Arthur Carlson, 75, of Clear Lake, died Sunday, Dec. 11, 1994, at the
Muse-Norris Hospice In-Patient Unit in Mason City, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Dec. 15, at the nieces and
nephews as well as other relatives and friends.
Arthur Carlson was born Oct. 27, 1917, in Hamilton County, near
Stanhope, Iowa, the son of Carl Carlson and Anna (nee) Anderson
Carlson.
He was a veteran of World War II, having served from November 1942 to
December 1943 in the European Theater as a member of the 363rd
Infantry. After the service, he worked and farmed most of his life.
In 1974, he moved to Clear Lake and was employed by Keiths Sanitation
for six years.
He is survived by one sister, Edith Overturf, Rock Falls, Ill.; and
many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Anna (Mrs. Carl)
Peterson, Agnes (Mrs. Carl) McFarland, Hilda (Mrs. Andrew) Olson,
Gertrude (Mrs. Sam) Anderson, Meta (Mrs. Clarence) Raner, Ollie (Mrs.
Wilbur) Smith and H Alice Malm; three brothers, Leonard Carlson, Carl
Carlson and Oscar Carlson.

Marjory Lois Nyhus
Marjory Lois Nyhus, 77, of Davenport, Iowa, formerly of Clear Lake,
died Wednesday, Dec. 7, 1994, in Davenport at the Kahl Home For the
Aged and Infirm.
There will be no visitation, the body was cremated. Memorial graveside
services and inurnment will be held later in the spring of 1995 at the
Clear Lake Cemetery, Clear Lake.

Marjory Lois Neal was born May 3, 1917, in Indianapolis, Ind. She was
the daughter of Henry E. Pedersen and Alvena L. Pedersen Neal. She
married Kenneth M. Nyhus June 12, 1935, in Mason City, Iowa. He
preceded her in death in January of 1981.
She had been employed as a clerk/cashier at both Jimmys Locker and
Easters Food store, and later worked as a waitress at Halfords
Restaurant and the Ritz Restaurant. She was a member of the Clear Lake
Methodist Church, Senior Citizens Club, and The Grandmothers Club. She
enjoyed bowling and especially enjoyed children as she provided
babysitting and day-care for many families in the Clear Lake area.
Survivors include two daughters, Maxine Harris and her husband,
Richard, of Ogden, Iowa, Mary Ellen Lorenz and her husband, Gary, of
Moline, Ill.; one son, Allan Nyhus, Cedar Falls, Iowa; nine
grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Patricia
Bledsoe and her husband, John, Clear Lake, and Janet Schroeder and her
husband, Melvin, Seymour, Mo.; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sisters,
Margaret and Elizabeth; and a great-granddaughter, Lyndsae, in
infancy.
Harriet M. Pate
Harriet M. Pate, 82, of Clear Lake, died Saturday, Dec. 10, 1994, at
the Muse-Norris Hospice In-Patient Unit in Mason City, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday), Dec. 14, at 1 p.m. at
the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. 4th St., Clear Lake. The
Rev. Murley Severtson will officiate. Burial will be at the Clear Lake
Cemetery.
The family suggests memorials in her name.
Harriet M. Pate was born Dec. 28, 1911, in Clear Lake, the daughter of
Gregor Christensen and Mette (nee) Jensen Christensen. She graduated
from Clear Lake High School in 1929.
On Sept. 23, 1933, she married Jesse W. (Dub) Pate in Klemme, Iowa.
The couple made their home in Clear Lake. He preceded her in death
Feb. 1, 1977.
Harriet cleaned many offices and cottages in the Clear Lake area and
took in laundry for many people. She enjoyed gardening and raising
flowers and especially loved handiwork, such as embroidering for her
children and grandchildren. She was a family-oriented person.
She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake and the Liberty
Club.
She is survived by two daughters, Marian and her husband, James Pals,
Clear Lake, and Barbara and her husband, Roger McQuitty, of Nora
Springs, Iowa; a son, Jesse Pate Jr., and his wife, Linda, Clear Lake;
nine grandchildren, Timothy Pate of Manly, Iowa, Susan Betts,
Coralville, Iowa, Kevin Pals of Mason City, Iowa, Julie Millhouse,
Fairfield, Iowa, Thomas Thornblade Jr., Mason City, Hollie Mosher of
Clear Lake, and Jeffrey Pate, Clear Lake; 20 great-grandchildren,
William and Nicholas Pals, John, April, Megan and Katlin Sheimo,
Brandi and Justin Blickenderfer, Scott, Paul and Samantha Millhouse,
Seth and Zachary Thornblade, and Tyler Mosher.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one son, William D.
Pate; two grandsons, Scott Thornblade and Steven Pals; two sisters,
Jenny Young and Agnetha Kimball; and one brother, Herbert Christensen.
Marie Bless
Marie Bless, 94, formerly of Ventura, Iowa, died Monday, Dec. 12,
1994, at the Rotary Ann Retirement Home in Eagle Grove, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Dec. 15, at 2 p.m., at the
Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. 4th St., Clear Lake, with the
Rev. Dean Hess, of Zion Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be at
the Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.
Visitation begins Thursday at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. The family
suggests memorials in her name.
Marie Bless was born Nov. 22, 1900, on a farm in Corwith Township,
located in Humboldt County, the daughter of George Olson and Ameria
(nee) Jacobson Olson. She attended school in Humboldt, Iowa.
On Nov. 24, 1921, she married Laurence L. Bless. The couple lived in
Ventura and she continued to make her home there until August 1992,
when she moved to the Rotary Ann Retirement Home in Eagle Grove, Iowa.
She was honored to be the grand marshal of Venturas Septemberfest
parade in 1990.
She is survived by a brother, Leonard Olson, Eagle Grove; a sister,
Ethel Jaqua, Humboldt, Iowa; three grandchildren, Alan Bless,
Columbus, Ohio, Linda Bless, Austin, Texas, and Penny Quinn,
Pennsylvania; two great-grandchildren, Beth and Michael Bless,
Columbus, Ohio.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a daughter, Marilyn
Bless; and two sons, Larry Bless and Tom Bless.
James K. Delahooke
Dr. James K. Delahooke, 87, of Friendship Haven, died Thursday, Dec.
8, 1994, at the Trinity Regional Hospital following a lengthy illness
of pneumonia.
Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 12, at the Chapel on the Hill
at Friendship Haven with the Rev Ron Kitterman officiating.
Services were also held Tuesday, Dec. 13, at the Clear Lake United
Methodist Church with the Rev. Fred Lewis officiating. Burial was in
the Clear Lake Cemetery.
Memorials may be sent to Friendship Haven of Cornell College in his
name.
James K. Delahook was born Sept. 24, 1907, in Bravo, Mich. He attended
grade school at Froelich country school and high school at Monona High
School. He later attended Cornell College earning a bachelor of arts
degree in 1930 and a B.D. in 1933 from Yale University Divinity
School. He earned an honorary D.D. degree from Cornell College in
1952.
Dr. Delahooke married Marie Kaiser at Mount Vernon. He joined the
Upper Iowa Methodist Church serving churches in Iowa towns of
Stanwood, Centerpoint, Urbana, Anamosa, Charles City and Marshalltown.
He also served as Spencer District Superintendent.
Dr. Delahook retired in June 1973 to the United Methodist Camp in
Clear Lake and served as the minister of visitation at the Clear Lake
United Methodist Church for seven years. He later served as the
minister of visitation at the United Methodist Church in Iowa City.
He married Pearl E. Ashland in 1988. They moved to Friendship Haven in
1989.
He was a member of many conference committees and boards especially in
the field of Christian education.
He is survived by his wife, Pearl Delahooke, of Friendship Haven; one
daughter, Nancy Thayer of Iowa City; six grandchildren; five
great-grandchildren; two brothers; and one sister.
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Marie; and a son,

Craig G. Niemeyer
Craig G. Niemeyer, 55, of La Porte City, Iowa, died
Wednesday, Dec. 14, at the Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo,
Iowa.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Dec. 18, at the Matt
Auditorium at La Porte City Union High School. The Rev. Wayne
McCoy, pastor of St. Paul United Methodist Church, La Porte City,
officiated the service. The body was cremated and burial will
be at a later date.
A memorial fund has been established through the family.
Craig Niemeyer was born July 16, 1939, in Britt, Iowa,
the son Clarence Niemeyer and Opal (nee) Slattenow Niemeyer.
He graduated from Garner High School in 1957. He graduated from
Eagle Grove Community College in 1960 and from the Iowa State
Teachers College (now known as UNI) in 1964.
On Sept. 3, 1961 he married Joann M. Hartin, in Clear
Lake. He taught school with the La Porte City School system for
31 years, from 1964-1994. He was the assistant
boys football and basketball coach for 23 years and had a summer
occupation of painting and carpentry for 32 years. Craig was
voted by students as Teacher Of The Year at Union High School
during the school year 1992-93.
He is survived by his wife Joann Hartin; one son,
Christopher Emil Niemeyer, Titonka, Iowa; three daughters,
Carla Cay Williams, Albuquerque, New Mexico, Cari Jo Davis
and Cathy Sue Shell, both of Phoenix, Ariz.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Ron Borton, Joel Bishop, Bob Burkgren, Neil Mullen, Craig Gingrich,

Myrtle Stella Volk
Myrtle Stella Volk, 87, of Eldora, Iowa, died Saturday, Dec. 24, 1994,
at the Eldora Regional and Medical Center in Eldora of natural causes.
Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday), Dec. 28, at 1 p.m. at
the Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora.
Burial will be at the Jackson Township Cemetery in Rural Owasa, Iowa.
Memorials have been established.
Myrtle Stella Volk was born Nov. 10, 1907, in Hardin County, Iowa, the
daughter of Charles Ellison and Minnie Shaner Ellison. In January of
1924, she was united in marriage to Sam Volk in Eldora. To this union
one daughter and one son were born, Catherine Volk and Ralph Volk.
She is survived by one son, Ralph and his wife, Marcia, Clear Lake;
one sister, Josie Trende, Iowa Falls, Iowa; nine grandchildren; and
seventeen great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Sam in 1976; a
daughter, Catherine in 1978; one grandson, Timothy in 1982; and one
sister, Anna.
Ina Pearl Miller
Mrs. Ina Pearl Miller, 91, of Clear Lake, died Monday, Dec. 26, 1994,
at the east campus of North Iowa Mercy Health Center.
Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday), Dec. 28, at 1:30
p.m., at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. 4th St., Clear
Lake. The Rev. Merlin Ackerson of First United Methodist Church, Mason
City, will officiate. Burial will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Ina Pearl Miller was born Oct. 12, 1903 in Gordonsville, Minn., the
daughter of Harry Edwards and Hattie (nee) Aley Edwards. On Aug. 15,
1923, she married Lloyd C. Miller at the Little Brown Church in
Nashua, Iowa. The couple farmed in the Clear Lake area before moving
into the community in 1945.
She enjoyed crocheting, handiwork and reading poetry. She was
[survived by] ... Miller and his wife, Ardith, Charles City, Iowa, and
Bonnie Miller, Clear Lake; 12 grandchildren, Linda Barlow, Charlene
Spencer, LaVonne Jensen, Nancy Ashland, Lenice Helmers, LaDonna Gray,
Deanna Andreasen, Kenneth Heimendinger, Wanda Stricker, Kristie
Vanderpool, Joni Warren and Tracy Pilchard; 36 great-grandchildren;
and eight great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1988; four
sister, Ethel Westover, Ruby Zook, Mary Edwards and Cecyle Osslund;
two brothers, Hubert Edwards and Lyle Edwards; and two
great-grandchildren, Jennifer Warren and Shannon Jensen.

Dale E. Barlow
Dale E. Barlow, 81, of Clear Lake, died Saturday, Dec 24, 1994, at the
Muse-Norris Hospice Impatient Unit in Mason City, Iowa.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 27, at the United Methodist
Church in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Fred Lewis officiating. Burial was
in Mt. Vernon Township Cemetery.
Dale E. Barlow was born July 11, 1913, on the family farm in Mt.
Vernon Township, rural Cerro Gordo County, the son of James Barlow and
Nettie (nee) VanHorn Barlow.
He attended rural schools and farmed the family farm. He was employed
as clerk for Mt. Vernon Township. He also was a lineman for the rural
telephone [company]. After his retirement, he continued to help out on

On May 29, 1934, he married Doris Bussa in the parsonage of the
Congregational Church in Clear Lake.
The couple moved into Clear Lake in 1970 from the farm and from
1970-78 he was employed by Stinehart Implement in Clear Lake. [He was]
president of the Clear Lake Noon Lions and was named Lion of the
Decade by that organization in 1990. He was credited with having high
ticket sales for the clubs annual Chicken Barbecue.
Dale was a member of the United Methodist Church in Clear Lake and a
former school board member for Mt. Vernon Township.
He is survived by his wife, Doris, Clear Lake; five sons, Donald
Barlow and his wife, Helen, Gladewater, Texas, Irvin Barlow and his
wife, Jane, Longview, Texas, Raymond Barlow and his wife, Sharon of
Columbus, Neb., Larry Barlow and his wife, Linda of Clear Lake, and
Dennis Barlow and his wife, Yasko of Aloha, Ore.; 15 grandchildren,
Richard Barlow, James Keith Barlow, John Barlow, Joe Barlow, Greg
Barlow, James A. Barlow, James K. Barlow, Judson D. Barlow, Donna
Craig, Gwen Schumaker, Teresa Klein, Sheila Groeneweg, Kimberly
Barlow, Emily Barlow and Pamela Barlow; 15 great-grandchildren, Jeremy
Craig, Justin Craig, Jessica Schumaker, Jeffrey Barlow, Justin Barlow,
Joshua Barlow, Zachary Klein, Nicholas Klein, Jacob Klein, Molly
Barlow, Samantha Barlow, Audrey Barlow, Raymond Barlow, Shilo Bentz
and Sara Barlow.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Wayne Barlow
and Vern Barlow; three sisters, Gae Oehlsen, Mae Caffrey and
Gennivieve Wood.
Pallbearers were Richard Barlow, John Barlow, Greg Barlow, James Keith
Barlow, Joe Barlow, Ted Klein.
George John Klaassen
George John Klaassen, 99, of Clear Lake, died Saturday, Dec. 24, 1994,
at the Muse-Norris Hospice In-Patient Unit in Mason City, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday), Dec. 28, at 11 a.m.
at the First Congregational Church in Clear Lake. The Rev. Charles
Williams will officiate. Burial will be [at the] the Oakland Cemetery,
Forest City, Iowa.
He was a self-taught musician, teaching himself to play and repair the
violin. He and his brother also enjoyed playing in a band for barn
dances. He would entertain on the guitar and harmonica and even
sparred with boxing great Jack Dempsey. He also was an avid baseball
player in his youth.
George moved back to Thompson and was engaged in farming when he
married Edna Juel. The couple moved to the Clear Lake and Garner area
and farmed.
The family suggests memorials to the George J. Klaassen Memorial Fund.
George John Klaassen was born Aug. 29, 1895 near Amsterdam, Holland,
the son of John Klaassen [and] Grace (nee) Goman Klaassen. At an early
age he moved with his parents to Butler County, Iowa. Later the family
lived in Thompson and Buffalo Center, where they were farm laborers.
He attended school in Thompson, Iowa, and later was a student at an
athletic school in the Chicago, Ill., area. He was a golden gloves
boxing ... a deputy sheriff and court bailiff in Cerro Gordo County
and worked as a foreman for the Clear Lake Water Tower Company. The
couple also ran Klaassens Cabana Resort on the south shore of Clear
Lake for 12 years.
George was instrumental in helping some of his wifes' cousins to come
to the United States and gain citizenship.
In 1969 they founded the Rosebud Sioux Indian Mission in South Dakota
and each year they journeyed there with food and hospital supplies.
Their support helped to provide scholarships and educational
opportunities for Indians.
For 38 years the Klaassens have been involved with the American Cancer
Society. They are past Clear Lake chairmen and top fund raisers for
Jail and Bail campaign for the Cancer Society, as well as the American
Red Cross drives. He was a past board member of the American Cancer
Society and Easter Seals.
He was installed into the Iowa Volunteer Hall of Fame in 1989 by
Governor Terry Branstad.
During his life, George and his wife looked for opportunities to give
to others. Twenty-three years ago they were founders of the
Beautification Program involving flower beds and trees in Clear Lake.
They have continued the program every year with the support of the
Kinney-Lindstrom Foundation.
The couple founded an annual picnic for residents of Opportunity
Village (formerly Handicap Village) in Clear Lake. For the past 11
years they organized and worked at the picnic.
The couple also participated in numerous bake sales to raise money for
the Humane Society, the Lime Creek Nature Center and other non-profit
organizations. They also volunteered for the Meals on Wheels and
Easter Seals programs.
He was a member of the First Congregational Church in Clear Lake for
23 years, as well as a past deacon.
He was ... past president of the Clear Lake Noon Lions and was named
Lion of the Decade by that organization in 1990. He was credited with
having high ticket sales for the clubs annual Chicken Barbecue. He ...
received the Lions International Presidents Award in 1979-80. He was
also the recipient of the Melvin Jones Award given by Lions
International.
For some 25 years, he served as a Commodore for the Clear Lake Area
Chamber of Commerce, welcoming new businesses and congratulating
others on business achievements. In 1984, the Klaassens were selected
by the Chamber to serve as Grand Marshals for the Fourth of July
parade.
The Klaassens were past recipients of the Harmony of Living Award
presented by the River City Barbershop Chorus annually to deserving
North Iowans.
His is survived by his wife, Edna, Clear Lake; and many nieces and
nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother; six sisters; and
an infant daughter.
