FLOYD RIDEN
Floyd Riden, 84, a resident of 700 Hildreth Street,
Charles City, died Friday, March 1, 2002, at the 11th
Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City. Floyd
William Riden was born May 25, 1917 in Butler County,
the son of Howard and Mary (Schilling) Riden. He
received his education from rural Butler County country
schools. On November 20, 1941, he was united in marriage
to Margaret Wedeking in Clarksville. Floyd was called to
serve his country during World War II in the United
States Army from August 27, 1942 to October 6, 1945. He
was in the 18th field artillery Division, training at
Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Floyd was sent overseas to the
European Theatre, fighting in Normandy, northern France,
Rhineland, Ardennes and central Europe. For his service
he was awarded five Battle Stars, the Good Conduct Medal
and the Purple Heart. Following his discharge, he
returned to Charles City where he worked at the Oliver
Corporation. In 1947, he and Margaret moved south of
Charles City, where they farmed until retiring 28 years
later, at which time they moved into Charles City. He
worked for Charles City Lumber and Peavey Lumber for
three years after moving to town. Floyd was a member of
Trinity United Methodist Church, Men’s Brotherhood,
Midi’s Heritage Club, VFW and the American Legion. His
retirement years were spent working in his wood shop,
doing yard work, and spending time with his family,
enjoying especially his grandchildren and
great-grandchildren. He was awaiting the arrival of two
additional great-grandchildren. Living family members
include his wife, Margaret, of Charles City; a daughter,
Mona Staudt and husband Ron of Charles City; a son, Gary
Riden and wife Sheila of Charles City; six
grandchildren, Douglas, Steven, Charles and Renee Staudt,
Somer Robbins and Andrea Riden; six great-grandchildren;
a brother, Harvey Riden and wife Maxine of Charles City;
and a sister-in-law, Odis Riden of Charles City. His
parents and a brother, Leslie Riden, preceded him in
death. Funeral services were held Monday, March 4, 2002,
at Trinity United Methodist Church in Charles City, with
Revs. Dianne Christopher and Diane Mitchell officiating.
Burial was in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, rural Charles
City. The Charles City Ceremonial Unit conducted
military honors at the graveside. Hauser Funeral Home in
Charles City was in charge of arrangements.
MATILDA E. HOLZSCHUH

A Funeral Mass for Matilda E. Holzschuh, 88, of
Greene, was held Tuesday, March 5, 2002, at St. Mary’s
Catholic Church in Greene with Rev. Msgr. Walter Brunken
officiating. Burial was in the St. Mary’s Cemetery in
Greene. Matilda Elizabeth Klein was born March 5, 1914,
in rural Gilbertville, Black Hawk County, a daughter of
John and Anna (Funfsinn) Schmitz Klein, and died Friday,
March 1, 2002, at the Heritage Care Center in Mason
City. She received her education in the rural Black Hawk
County schools. On June 5, 1940, she was united in
marriage to Harold Holzschuh at St. Johns Catholic
Church in Waterloo. They lived in Waterloo and later
Oelwein before moving to Greene in 1948. Tillie was
employed at the Truex Cafe and later Sonny’s Tap, both
in Greene. Tillie and Harold owned and operated
Holzschuh Processing for fifteen years. Tillie’s
interests included garden-ing, word search puzzles, and
going on the special tours offered by the bank. She was
a faithful member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in
Greene, Catholic Daughters of the Americas, and St.
Lucy’s Circle. She was a life-time member of the
American Legion Auxiliary. Those thankful for having
shared her life include her four daughters: Paulette
Haley of Chico, California, Patsy and her husband Galen
Hoodjer of Greene, Francine Albrecht and Judy Ellingson,
both of Mason City; one son: Gary of Defuniak, Florida;
nine grandchild-ren, six step-grandchildren and seven
great-grandchildren. She leaves to join her husband
Harold; parents John and Anna Klein; brother Eugene
Klein; her sister: Evelyn Mishak; nine half-sisters:
Kathryn Wingert, Mary Phillips, Emma O’Connor, Pearl
Reiter, Cecilia Nemmers, Anglia Reiter, Elizabeth
Brustkern, Molly Driscoll, Marie Mayer; five
half-brothers: Joseph Schmitz, Peter Schmitz, Joseph
Klein, William Klein and Lawrence Klein; and two
sons-in-law: Bob Haley and Edward Albrecht; and a
grandson Jonathan Holzschuh. Those planning an
expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the
Matilda E. Holzschuh Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 356,
Greene, Iowa 50636-0356. Participants in the Funeral
Mass were JoAnn Nixt, Lector. Alter Servers were Ben and
Kurt Gansen. Presentation of Gifts by
Great-grandchildren of Matilda Holzs-chuh. Special music
was provided by organist, Theresa Majewski accompanying
the Resurrection Choir directed by Zoe Ann Keen as they
sang “Here I am Lord”, “Be Not Afraid”, “Precious
Memories” and “On Eagles Wings”. Flower attendants were
Shelly Jensen, Melissa Wood, Lori Van Wyk and Amy
Fischer. Pallbearers were Shaun Haley, James Haley, Ryan
Haley, Joe Albrecht, Eric Ellingson and Brian McBurney.
Honorary Pallbearers were Zachary Jensen and Kinser
Jensen. Ushers were Dean Jensen, Brent Van Wyk and Dale
Wood. Reid’s Funeral Chapel in Greene was in charge of
arrangements.
TILLIE KRUGER

Tillie Kruger, 95, of Dumont, Iowa died on Sunday,
February 24, 2002 at the Dumont Care Center of natural
causes. She was born on February 9, 1907, in Grundy
County, Iowa. On February 5, 1929, Tillie was united in
marriage to Henry Kruger in Pleasant Valley. She was a
homemaker all her life and was a member of the Dumont
Reformed Church. Survivors include a son: Mengel Kruger
of Athens, Wisconsin; a daughter: Kathleen Schwennen of
Jesup, Iowa; a sister: Lena Rindels of Parkersburg,
Iowa; nine grandchildren, fifteen great grand-children,
four great-great grand-children and three step great
grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband
Henry; one grandchild, Danny Schwennen and one brother
Menno. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m.,
Thursday, February 28, 2002 at the Dumont Reformed
Church with Rev. Bob Scholten officiating. Special music
was provided by organist, Jim Siebrands accomp-anying
the congregational singing. Pallbearers were Johnny
Muller, Bob Kobliska, Duane Wubbena, Melvin Mennen,
Dalen Miller, and Lawrence Winkowitsch. Final resting
place was in the Oak Hill Cemetery, rural Bristow, Iowa.

EDWIN P. "ED" SCHRAGE

Edwin P. “Ed” Schrage, 66, of 1970 270th St. Marble
Rock, died Friday (March 8, 2002) at Mercy Hospital of
North Iowa. Funeral Services for Ed were held Tuesday
March 12, 2002 at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Marble
Rock with the Rev. Patricia Shaw officiating. Interment
was in Westside Cemetery in Marble Rock. Edwin Paul
Schrage was born July 19, 1935, in rural Greene. He was
one of two sons of Clarence and Valda (Walsh) Schrage.
He attended school in at rural Butler County, and
afterwards joined his father’s farming operation. Edwin
raised quarter horses, hogs, cattle, chickens, and later
draft horses. He retired in the late nineties due to
health reasons. On June 19, 1955, he was united in
marriage to married Dora Christensen at St. John
Evangelical Lutheran Church. To this union was born two
sons. He was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church
and was formerly on the church council. He was also a
member of the farm bureau. He enjoyed reading the paper,
and always the Draft Horse Journal. Edwin is survived by
his loving wife of 46 years, Dora, of Marble Rock; 2
sons, Duane Schrage of Charles City; Philip Schrage and
his wife, Carol, Marble Rock; three grandchildren;
Brittany, Lindsay, and Courtney Schrage, one brother,
Linus Schrage and his wife, Sandy, of Charles City; one
sister-in-law, Bernice Tapley of Elma; and many nieces
and nephews. His parents preceded him in death.
ROLLAND BREKKE

Rolland Brekke, 74, of Shell Rock, Iowa, died Sunday
evening, March 10, 2002, at the Cedar Valley Hospice
House, Waterloo, of lung cancer. He was born on April
18, 1927, in Lanesboro, Minnesota, the son of Iver and
Ragnhild (Bothun) Brekke. He was baptized and later
confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Lanesboro.
Rolland graduated from the Lanesboro High School in 1945
and then entered the US Navy during WWII. Following his
discharge, Rolland attended Luther College in Decorah,
Iowa, where he received his BA degree in Business. On
July 15, 1950, he was united in marriage to Ellen
Johnson in Highland, Minnesota. Rolland had worked for
the Standard Oil Company, then he owned and operated a
service station in Lanesboro. He had also worked for the
Shell Oil Company in Peoria, Illinois, and in 1960, they
moved to Allison, Iowa, where he was a manager for
Thermogas. He retired in 1989, and in July of 1994 he
and Ellen moved to Shell Rock, where for several years
Rolland worked for the Pre mier Car Wash in Waverly. He
was a member of Heritage Methodist Church, Waverly, the
Avery-Slight American Legion Post in Shell Rock, and the
VFW Post #2208 in Waverly. He was a former member of the
Allison Drill Team where he had served for thirty years.
Rolland was very patriotic, and his service to God and
Country was very special to him. He had golfed and
fished, but his greatest enjoyment came from his family,
whom he loved very, very much. Rolland is survived by
his wife, Ellen, of Shell Rock; his four daughters and
their husbands, Randi & Rich Black of Algona, Iowa,
Rachel & Steve Nieman of Shell Rock, Mary & Larry
Kauzlarich of Jordan, Minnesota, and Martha & Bob Clock
of Urbandale, Iowa; ten grandchildren, Jamie, Josh &
Jill Black, Matt Nieman, Erica & Justin Garman, Scott
Kauzlarich, Dana & John Miller, Jennifer Kauzlarich,
Jeff Kauzlarich, Jason Clock; five great grandchildren,
Noah, Ansley, Jay & Jessie Miller, McKenzie Garman. He
was preceded in death by his parents; seven sisters, Rae
Shoemaker, Gen Waushesock, Mae Lewis, Inez Gunderson,
Phyllis Munden, Hannah Reeves, Alva Funke, Cecelia
Brekke; and one brother, Jim Brekke. Funeral services
were held Wednesday, March 13, 2002, at Heritage
Methodist Church, Waverly, with Pastor Nathan N. Frazee
officiating. Burial was in the Riverside Cemetery, Shell
Rock. Memorials may be directed to the Cedar Valley
Hospice, or to Heritage Methodist Church.
MARLYS ANN FREY
03/18/02
Marlys Ann Frey, 93, of Aplington, Iowa was born the
daughter of Peter and Bertha Bruns Luppen on September
9, 1908 in Albert Lea, Minnesota. She received her
education in Aplington where she graduated from high
school. She later attended college in Iowa Falls and
taught school for several years after that. On January
24, 1931, she was united in marriage with Edward Frank
Frey in the parsonage of the Baptist Church in Steamboat
Rock. The couple farmed a few years near Allison, Iowa,
then moved to the farm northwest of Aplington. Edward
died July 5, 1999. Marlys was a member of the Aplington
Baptist Church where she served faithfully as Sunday
School Teacher and was an active in the Benevolent
Society for many years. On June 10, 1973, Marlys was
honored for 30 years of devotion as a teacher in the
Aplington Community Bible School. At home, a passion of
Marlys’ was planting and watching over her flowers on
the farm. Uppermost in her priorities was spending time
with her grandchildren at the farm at every opportunity
and concern for their education. Marlys and Ed enjoyed
traveling together throughout the United States. At 7:40
a.m., Saturday, March 9, 2002, Marlys died at Maple
Manor Care Center in Aplington, where she had been a
resident since September, 1998. Marlys is preceded in
death by her parents; her husband, Edward Frey; an
infant daughter, Merna Ruth; a daughter, Dahlia
Stockdale on June 27, 1998; and a sister, Esther
Leerhoff. She is survived by one son, Robert Frey and
his wife, Betty Jane of Aplington; one daughter, Betty
Reed and her husband, Harold of Urbandale; a son-in-law,
Harold Stockdale, Ames; grandchildren: Clay Stockdale
and his wife, Deb and their children, Amanda and Faith;
Marla Miller and her husband, Lee; Lisa Robertson and
her husband, Mark; Lane Frey and his wife, Kara and
their children, Larissa and Andrew; Camila Haugstad and
her husband, Steve and their children, Cameron, Hannah
and Heidi; Robert Griffith and his wife, Paula; and
Carlene Griffith and her daughter, Joni Beth Harbeck.
Funeral Services were held March 13 at the Aplington
Baptist Church with Pastor Marlin MohrmanOfficiating.
Burial was in Pleasant View Cemetery at Aplington with
Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel in charge of
arrangements.
ANNA MARIE WOLFF
03/18/02
Anna Marie Wolff, age 79, of Aplington, Iowa, was
born the daughter of Harm and Mary Peters Frieling on
January 10, 1923, in Sibley, Iowa. Later the family
lived by Fern where she went to school. At age 12, the
family moved to Grundy Center where she graduated from
high school in 1941. After graduation she received her
Normal Teaching Certificate and taught country school at
Pleasant Valley #4 and Palermo School in Grundy County.
She also taught Sunday School. On June 4, 1946, she was
united in marriage to Henry Wolff at the Bethany
Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center. They farmed south
of Aplington until 1989, when they moved to their
present home in Aplington. Anna was a member of the
Aplington Baptist Church where she was involved in the
Home Bible League, White Cross work, and quilted with
the women of the church. She especially loved her
family, her grandchildren and enjoyed gardening, growing
flowers, reading and baking. At 4:50 a.m., Saturday,
March 9, 2002, Anna died at Maple Manor Village in
Aplington of natural causes. She was preceded in death
by her parents, her brother, Meinhardt Frieling and a
sister, Etta Witte. Anna is survived by her husband,
Henry J. Wolff; two daughters, LaDonnis Wolff of Nashua,
Iowa; LaDonna Graves and her husband, Don of Dike, Iowa;
two sons, LaVern and his wife, Cindy, of Aplington; Gary
of Oakland, California; and five grandchildren, Lynette
Petersen and her husband, Brian; David Graves and his
wife, Kristal; Jason Graves, James and Brian Wolff.
There are two great-grandchildren, Brandon and Brady
Petersen. She is also survived by two brothers, Ben
Frieling of Grundy Center and Herman Frieling of Hegins,
Pennsylvania and several nieces and nephews. Funeral
services were held Tuesday, March 12 at theAplington
Baptist Church with Pastor Marlin Mohrman officiating.
Burial was in Pleasant View Cemetery, Aplington with
Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel in charge of
arrangements.

ALICE VAN HEIDEN

Alice Van Heiden, 80, of Wellsburg, Iowa, died
Wednesday, February 20, 2002, at the Grundy County
Memorial Hospital Long Term Care Unit, Grundy Center,
Iowa, of natural causes. Funeral services were held at
1:00 p.m., Saturday, February 23, 2002, at the Bethany
Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center with Pastor Kent
Leydens officiating. Burial was in the Ackley Christian
Reformed Church Cemetery in rural Ackley, Iowa. Alice
was born on July 18, 1921, in Butler County near Ackley,
the daughter of Bert and Gertie (Bunk) Abbas. She
attended grade school in Austinville and graduated from
Ackley High School in 1939. Alice married Benjamin
DeVries and then later divorced. On February 17, 1949,
she was united in marriage to Ben Van Heiden at the
Reformed Church parsonage in Bristow, Iowa. Ben passed
away on February 18, 1995 in Allison, Iowa. Alice was a
member of the Bethany Presbyterian Church in Grundy
Center. Survivors include her ten children: Jeanette
Merrill of Allison, Lavern Van Heiden and his wife
Beverly of Wellsburg, Jerry DeVries of Reinbeck,
Benjamin J. DeVries and his wife Judy of Colorado
Springs, Colorado, Jerald Van Heiden and his wife Connie
of Kinsman, Illinois, Richard Van Heiden and his wife
Victoria of Steamboat Rock, Merna Lovell and her husband
Larry of Waverly, David Van Heiden and his wife Dianne
of Hudson, Laurie Diehm and her husband Don of Reinbeck,
and Kenneth Van Heiden and his wife Barbara of Cedar
Falls; thirty grandchildren; thirty-one great
grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren; three
sisters: Remda Geerdes of Ankeny, Iowa, Bertha Bishop of
Denver, Iowa and Henrietta Johnson of Aplington. She was
preceded in death by her parents, husband Ben Van
Heiden, a son Gary Lee in infancy, three brothers:
Arend, Fred, and George Abbas, and a sister: Lucille
Plutschaun. Doyen-Abels Funeral Home in Wellsburg was in
charge of arrangements.

HERBERT G FOLKEN

Herbert G. “Herb” Folken, 92, of Winter Park,
Florida, died on March 16, 2002. He was born in Allison,
Iowa and was an Agriculture Economist for the Federal
Department of Agriculture. He was married to Molly Hill
and they moved to Stuart, Florida in 1978. He was a
member of the First Congregational Church of Winter
Park, and a member of the University Club of Winter Park
Farm House Fraternity, NARFE. He served his country in
the U.S. Navy during World War II. Survivors include his
wife: Molly Hill Folken of Winter Park, Florida; a son:
Dennis N. Folken of Sapphire Lakes, North Carolina;
three stepdaughters: Jean Hill Cooley of Land O’ Lakes,
Florida, Barbara Hill Formoso of Burk, Virginia and
Rebecca Hill McAllister of Golfport, Florida; ten
grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Fern Lockard Bakker, age 79, of
Parkersburg, Iowa were held at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, March
19, 2002 at the Waterloo Memorial Park Chapel, with
burial in the Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery, both in
Waterloo, Iowa. Fern died at 5:18 a.m., Friday, March
15, 2002 at Maple Manor Village, Aplington, Iowa, from
natural causes. She was preceded in death by her first
husband, H. Lloyd Lockard and a brother, Claude
Carpenter. She is survived by her husband, Fred H.
Bakker of Parkersburg; a son, Dean Lockard of Waterloo;
two daughters, Sharon Bouchard of Waterloo and Sandra
Miller and her husband, Mike of Omaha, Nebraska; four
grandchildren; one sister, Ruby Witt of Waterloo and on
brother, Ralph Carpenter of Waverly. Memorials may be

A Private Family Service for Scott Bertram, age 39,
of Shell Rock, Iowa was held at 10:30 a.m., Friday,
March 15 2002, at the Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in
Clarksville. Burial of cremains was in the Allison
Cemetery. He had worked as a part-time farm laborer. On
Saturday, March 9, 2002, Scott died at his home in Shell
Rock, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his father,
Fred, one sister, Janice Bertram, and a nephew. Scott is
survived by his wife, Lorie Bertram, of Shell Rock; his
mother, Carrie Bertram of Allison; four brothers, Ron
Bertram of Shell Rock, Dan Bertram of Shell Rock, Larry
Bertram of Kesley, and Kenneth Bertram of Clarksville;
and eleven nieces and nephews. Memorials may be directed
to the family of Scott Bertram. Redman-Schwartz Funeral
Home in Clarksville was in charge of arrangements.
MARY DRAVES

Mary Draves, 74, of Webster City, died Friday, March
15, 2002, at Trinity Regional Hospital in Fort Dodge.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, March
19, 2002 at Asbury United Methodist Church, with Rev.
Mike Morgan officiating. Burial was in the Cass Township
Cemetery, north of Webster City. Mary Louise Waugh,
daughter of Mark and Hazel Barnes Waugh, was born
January 16, 1928 at Armstrong, Iowa. She graduated from
the Clarksville High School in 1945. On August 26, 1951,
she married Emil Draves in Clarksville. The couple
resided in Webster City. She was a homemaker. Mrs.
Draves is survived by her husband, Emil; daughter and
son-in-law, Debra and Brian Coon of Gencoe, Minnesota;
son and daughter-in-law, Craig and Becky Draves of Ham
Lake, Minnesota; step-children, Roger and Linda Draves
of San Jose, California, Virgil and Ruth Draves of
Kirkland, Washington; five grandchildren; three great
grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; two
step-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Richard Waugh
of Clarksville. She was preceded in death by her
parents. She was a member of the Asbury United Methodist
Church, Priscilla Circle and a volunteer of the Hamilton
Hospital Gift Shop.
HELEN POOLEY

Funeral services for Mrs. Helen Pooley, 89, of
Greene were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 20, at
the First Presbyterian Church in Greene with Pastor Paul
Uzel officiating. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery
in Greene. Helen Augusta Borchard was born December 7,
1912, west of Rockford, a daughter of Richard H. and
Martha M. (Zitzow) Borchard, and died Friday, March 15,
2002, at the Nora Springs Care Center after a brief
illnss. At the age of three her family moved west of
Marble Rock where she later attended Scott Center
School, and in order to attend high school in Marble
Rock she and a friend worked for room and board so they
could stay in town during the winter months. After her
completion of high school, she worked for Black’s
Department Store in Waterloo. On October 14, 1934, she
was united in marriage to S. Dwight Pooley at the Little
Brown Church in Nashua. Helen was bookkeeper for the S.
D. Pooley Lumber Company in Greene for 37 years, working
until shortly before her death. She was a member of the
First Presbyterian Church, Presbyterian Women, Good
Cheer Circle, and the Greene Woman’s Club. Living family
members include her children and their spouses:
Priscilla and Earl Landers of Greene, Richard and Janice
Pooley of Norristown, Pennsylvania, Alan and Sandra
Pooley of Apple Valley, Minnesota, Philip and Mary Ann
Pooley of Hurst, Texas; seven grandchidlren and their
spouses: Lynn and Don Swanson, Lisa Pooley, Dyanna
Pooley, Justin and Lisa Pooley, Brandon and Trudy
Landers, Brendt and Karen Landers, Barry Landers and his
friend Daphne; eight great granadchildren: Chemiere
Verhey, Kelsey Swanson, Tyler Landers, Taylor Landers,
Trevor Landers, Brylee Landers, Owen Landers, Cooper
Landers; two sisters: Carol and her husband Richard
Rohwedder of Greene, Irene Kiehn of Fort Lupton,
Colorado; and her brother, William Borchard of Marble
Rock. She was preceded in death by her husband, S.
Dwight Pooley; one sister, Catherine Miller, and two
brothers, John Borchard and his twin brother Charles
Borchard who died in infancy; and a grandson, Danny J.
Landers. Special music for the funeral was provided by
organist, Theresa Majewski accompanying the duet of
Twyla Ring and Jack Reid as they sang “In The Garden”
and Twyla Ring singing a solo “When Peace Like a River,”
and the congregational hymns of “Let All Things Now
Living” and “To God Be the Glory.” Flower attendants
were Darlene Brinkman and Barbara Vance. Casketbearers
were William Borchard, Jr., Gordon Rohwedder, Justin
Pooley, Brendt Landers, Brandon Landers and Barry
Landers. Ushers were Pat McRoberts and Emery Neymeyer.
