Marlo Jeannine Ouren

February 14, 2008

Marlo Jeannine Ouren, 76, of Clarion, passed away on Monday, February 4, 2008, at the Wright Medical Center in Clarion.

Funeral services were held on Friday, February 8, at the First United Methodist Church in Clarion. Pastor Don Morrison officiated at the 1:30 p.m. service. Burial was in the Harlan Cemetery.

Marlo Jeannine Phipps, was born on November 25, 1931 in the Hamburg Hospital, the daughter of Wayne and Hazel Gillam Phipps. She attended school in Farragut, Iowa, graduating in 1949. Jeannine then went to Simpson College, achieving a degree in education. She then taught elementary education and later became involved in real estate and the Ouren Abstract Company.

In 1951, Jeannine was united in marriage to Lawrence R. Parr. To this union three children were born. She later married Bud Ouren in 1977.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Clarion. Her other passions in life included politics, environmental issues, especially birds, shopping and music. She was an avid book reader and a member of the Book Club at the Clarion Library.

She is survived by two daughters, Diane Sorensen and husband, Dan of Clarion and Janet Leinen of Gilbert, Arizona; five grandchildren; three great-granddaughters; step-children, Joplyn (Shawn) Cannon, Jessica Van Houten and Alison Le Blanc; one step-great-grandson; one brother, Richard Phipps and wife, Marilyn; one nephew and one niece.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bud on December 13, 2001; and a son, Steven on February 10, 1977.

Lawrence D. Asche

February 14, 2007

Lawrence D. Asche, 64, of Fort Dodge, passed away on Monday, February 4, 2008, at the Villa Care Center in Fort Dodge.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, February 9, at the Foust Funeral Home in Eagle Grove. Pastor H.W. Schiller officiated at the 10:30 a.m. service. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove.

Lawrence D. A Asche, was born on February 16, 1943 in Eagle Grove, the son of Angle and Alice (Omvig) Asche. He was raised and educated in the area of his birth. Larry served in the United States Navy from 1959-1963. On July 3, 1972, Lawrence married Amy McPherson at Clarion. He worked for the Street Department for the City of Eagle Grove for 26 years. Larry enjoyed fishing and hunting.

Lawrence is survived by his wife, Amy Asche of Eagle Grove; children, Danny and Suzie Huffman of Carson City, Nevada; step-children, Arlan McPherson and wife, Shannon of Eagle Grove, Laurie McPherson and friend, Jon Biondahl of Eagle Grove and Melanie Clay and husband, Rick of Goldfield: several grandchildren; sisters, Mary Henningson of Clear Lake, Mildred Reed of Eagle Grove, Alice Jean Lessmeier and husband, Harold of Fort Dodge and Linda Asche of Eagle Grove; brothers, Don Asche of Eagle Grove, Richard Asche and wife, Janis of Clarion, Ronald Asche and wife, Fran of Caldwell, Idaho, Robert Asche and wife, Judy of Eagle Grove, John Asche and wife, Cindy of Eagle Grove, Terry Arne and wife, Vicki of Eagle Grove; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Ed, Joe and Kenneth; sisters-in law, Irene and Dora; brothers-in-law, Raymond and Warren; two step-sons, Rick McPherson and Mike McPherson.

Kenneth Pershing Severson

February 14, 2008

Kenneth Pershing Severson, 89, a lifelong farmer and resident of rural Belmond, died on Tuesday, February 5, 2008, at his home in rural Belmond, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Funeral services were held on Friday, February 8, at the St. Olaf Lutheran Church, rural Belmond. Rev. Lowell H. Halvorson officiated at the 10:30 a.m. service. Burial was in the St. Olaf Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Kenneth Pershing Severson, was born on September 26, 1918, on his parents' farm in rural Thor, the son of Knute and Alma (Gunderson) Severson. He was baptized and confirmed at the St. Olaf Lutheran Church where he was an active and lifelong member.

Ken received his education in the Rural School No. 9. Kenneth was united in marriage to Icle Leonard on June 6, 1940, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Their marriage was blessed with one son, Sidney.

Kenneth farmed for more than 60 years in Belmond and Grant Townships. Although he retired from farming full-time in his later years, he continued to assist his son in the farming operations, and later his grandson, Troy. Ken could still be found helping with the farming tasks this past summer until his health began to decline.

He was an active member of the St. Olaf Church, where he held various offices and sang in the men's chorus. He was a longtime board member of both the Wright County REC and the Clarion Co-op.

He and Icle enjoyed wintering for many years in Mesa, Arizona, where he shared his vocal talents in a men's chorus there as well. They had also enjoyed traveling on various other trips, including a memorable journey to Norway in 1974.

In more recent years following the passing of his wife, Icle, he enjoyed the friendship and camaraderie of longtime neighbor and special friend, Kay Marshall. Kenneth also very much enjoyed times spent with his family and friends.

He is survived by his son, Sid and wife, Sherry of Clarion; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; one sister, Elaine Lenz of Mason City; longtime friend and neighbor, Kay Marshall of Clarion; and numerous nieces and nephews and other extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Icle on April 7, 1997; four sisters, Myrtle Chauncey, Leila Wion, Betty Lynch and Kathryn Christenson; and one brother, Sanford Severson.

David Grigg Elkin

February 14, 2008

David Grigg Elkin, 56, of Ingleside, Illinois, passed away on Thursday, February 7, 2008, at his home of an apparent heart attack.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, February 12, at the United Church of Christ, Eagle Grove. Pastor James Cunningham officiated at the 10:30 a.m. service. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove.

David Grigg Elkin, was born on April 14, 1951 in Fort Dodge, the son of Grigg and Ellen C. (Paine) Elkin. He was reared and educated in Eagle Grove. David completed the Auto Body Repair Program at Southwestern College in Creston.

He was a member of the United Church of Christ in Eagle Grove. He was an artist who restored and admired classic cars and enjoyed fishing, boating, movies and traveling. David made his home in Holmes, Minneapolis, Minnesota, Fremont, California, Galway, New York and Ingleside, Illinois.

David was married to Melodee McKie and to this union three sons were born. On March 17, 1988, David married Colleen Faulhaber and to this union one son, Ronnie G. was born.

David had owned and operated an auto body shop and farmed with his father. He also worked for the Paramount Auto Body and was an automobile insurance adjuster/appraiser in New York and Illinois.

He is survived by his wife, Colleen of Ingleside, Illinois; four sons, Shawn and wife, Elena of DeKalb, Illinois, Timothy, Dustin and Ronnie G., all of Minneapolis, Minnesota; two step-children, Eric Schoenberger of Minneapolis, Minnesota and Sara Schoenberger of Amsterdam, New York; two grandsons; step-granddaughter, Aaliyah; father, Grigg Elkin of Eagle Grove; two sisters, Mary "Cookie" Thomas of Clarion and Colleen Van Langen and husband, Randy of Grand Island, Nebraska; one brother, Ron Elkin and wife, DewAnn of Tulsa, Oklahoma; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Ellen.

Stanley Melbourne Burras

February 14, 2008

Stanley Melbourne Burras, 86, of Eagle Grove, died on Friday, February 8, 2008, at the Rotary Ann Nursing Home in Eagle Grove.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, February 12, at the Samuel Lutheran Church in Eagle Grove. Pastor Stan Peterson officiated at the 2:00 p.m. service. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove.

Stanley Melbourne Burras, was born on June 6, 1921, the son of of Carl and Berthilde (Anderson) Burras. He was baptized at the St. John's Lutheran Church on July 10, 1921. He graduated from the Kanawha High School in 1940.

After graduation, Stanley served in the United States Coast Guard from December19, 1941 until October 11, 1945. He served as a gunner's mate in the State of Alaska, a state which he came to love in spite of the cold.

On November 23, 1946, Stanley was united in marriage with Laura Marie Voight. The couple made their home in Chicago, Webster City and returned to Eagle Grove in 1953.

Stanley was a member of the Samuel Lutheran Church, where he sang in the choir, served as an usher and raised his family in the Christian faith. Though a quiet, solitary man, he stood firm in his faith and was loved by all. Stanley was a member of the V.F.W. Post #304 and enjoyed reading and fishing.

He is survived by his children, Sandra Thomason and husband, George and Judi Thompson and Carl Burras, all of Eagle Grove; and nine grandchildren.

Stanley was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Laura on November 19, 2002; one brother, Irving; a sister, Arlene; son-in-law, Gene Thompson; and one great-grandson.

Stuart Ballou

March 13, 2008

Stuart Ballou, 80, of Florissant, Missouri, passed away on Friday, February 8, 2008. Funeral services were held on Saturday, February 16, in Florissant.

Stu was born on August 29, 1927. He attended Clarion Schools and was a member of the class of 1946. He left school prior to graduation to serve his country during World War II, and when he returned he completed his high school education at Clarion High School, graduating mid-term in 1947. He attended Drake University.

As a U.S. Navy non-com during the Korean War, he was instrumental in organizing chapters of the Korean War Veterans Association in Missouri. He was State Commander for more than nine years and established six new KWVA chapters in Missouri. He also found time to visit former servicemen and women at the Veterans' Home in St. Louis and in 2007 was named Florissant Veteran of the year.

He is survived by his wife, Mollie (Shillito) Ballou; two sons, Doug Ballou and Brian (Kathy) Ballou; one brother, Philip Ballou; two grandchildren; and other family and friends.

Dean Arthur Helgevold

February 14, 2008

Dean Arthur Helgevold, 70, of Eagle Grove, passed away on Saturday, February 9, 2008, at the Iowa Methodist Hospital, Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 14, at the United Church of Christ, Eagle Grove. Pastor Kenneth Reiter will officiate at the 10:30 a.m. service. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove.

Dean Arthur Helgevold, was born on January 16, 1938 in Goldfield, the son of Leonard and Bernice (Sorensen) Helgevold. He was raised and educated in the area of his birth, graduating from the Eagle Grove High School in 1956. He also attended the Iowa Military Academy. Dean served in the Iowa Army National Guard as a 1st Lieutenant, from October 31, 1955 until October 30, 1958.

Dean married Jane Kirchhof in 1958 at Thor. The couple had two sons, Kevin and Keith. On June 26, 1965, Dean was united in marriage with Mary J. Manley at the United Church of Christ in Eagle Grove and they had two sons, Duane and Dale.

Dean was a truck driver for Umthun Trucking and ADS of Eagle Grove.

Dean was a member of the United Church of Christ in Eagle Grove and the Methodist Church in Redfield. He was a member of numerous Masonic Lodge affiliations, including Perry, Renwick and Bower Lodge #464 Eagle Grove. He also enjoyed golfing and bowling.

Dean is survived by his children, Kevin Helgevold and wife, Linda of Irvine, California, Keith Helgevold of Orange, California, Duane Helgevold and wife, Jennifer of Council Bluffs and Dale Helgevold and wife, Lori of Osceola; eight grandchildren; and one sister, Doris Soderstrum and husband, Weldon of Adel.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and wife on June 28, 1982.

Sven Holger Anderson

February 14, 2008

Sven Holger Anderson, 92, of Clarion, passed away on Saturday, February 9, 2008, at the Careage in Clarion.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, February 13, at the United Methodist Church in Clarion. Pastor Don Morrison officiated at the 10:30 a.m. service. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery, Clarion.

Sven Holger Anderson, was born on December 14, 1915 in Sweden, the son of Algot Konrad (A.K.) and Elsie Marie Ingerson Anderson. The family came to America in 1921 and settled in Wall Lake Township, Wright County, Iowa.

On January 26, 1941, Sven was united in marriage with El Vena June Hawe at the Methodist Parsonage in Clarion. The couple spent their farming years in Wright and Franklin Counties. In later years, Sven worked as a service technician for various John Deere Implement dealerships. The couple moved into Clarion in 1973.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Clarion. His favorite free time activities included fishing, visiting with friends and family, and woodworking. Over the years he made many toys, puzzles, outdoor decorations, tables, detailed dominos and checker games, and a grandmother clock.

Survivors include his daughter, Beverly Claude and husband, Francis of Clarion; one granddaughter; one great-granddaughter; one great-grandson; one great-great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife on April 2, 2002; four brothers, Nels, Eldon, Everett and Melvin Anderson.

Jane DeEtte Davison

February 21, 2008

Jane DeEtte Davison, 93, formerly of Clarion, currently residing in Boone, passed away at the Eastern Star Masonic Home in Boone, on Thursday, February 14, 2008. She had been a resident at the Home since March 2004.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, February 19, at the First Presbyterian Church, Boone. Dr. Richard Harken officiated at the 10:30 a.m. service. Interment was in the Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, at 2:30 p.m. Rev. Patti Aurand officiated at the burial site.

Jane DeEtte Williams, was born on December 23, 1914 in Mason City, the daughter of James E. and Alice R. (Fisk) Williams. Jane graduated from the Mason City High School in 1932, Mason City Junior College in 1934, and received a Bachelor of Arts in Business in 1936 from Grinnell College.

On July 28, 1937, she married Robert L. "Bob" Davison a the First Congregational Church, Mason City. She was an avid sports fan following the Chicago Cubs and the Iowa Hawkeyes, liked to spend time at the cottage on Crosslake, Minnesota, and enjoyed being with her friends and family.

She was a member of the United Church of Christ Congregational in Clarion, P.E.O. Chapter FS, AAUW, and was awarded 2004 Woman of the Year, American Legion Auxiliary, I-Club, Kensington Club, and was an Honorary Paul Harris Fellow of the Rotary Club.

She is survived by two daughters, Diana Weddell and husband, Jim and Sue Snider and husband, Jim, all of Boone; one son-in-law, Art Oberg of Burnsville, Minnesota; seven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bob; one daughter, Lynne Oberg; one granddaughter; two great-grandsons; one sister, Ruth Paschal; and an infant brother.

In lieu of flowers, the family requested memorials to be given to the Wright Medical Foundation, Clarion, Foundation for Boone Area Humane Society or to the Hearth Stone Memory Care Unit at the Eastern Star Masonic Home in Boone.

Kay Lucille Meinke

February 21, 2008

Kay Meinke, 72, of Goldfield, passed away on Thursday, February 14, 2008, at the Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge.

Funeral services were held on Monday, February 18, at the Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, Eagle Grove. Pastor Travis Schmidt officiated at the 11:00 a.m. service. Burial was in the LuVerne Township Cemetery.

Kay Lucille Lothringer, was born on February 13, 1936 in Iowa City, the daughter of Herbert and Evelyn (Hewitt) Lothringer. She was baptized in LuVerne by Rev. Louis Wittenburg and confirmed in 1954 at the College Hill Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls by Rev. Brammer. Kay was raised most of her life in Humboldt County. She then attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls in 1955, where she obtained a pre-professional teaching certificate.

Her first teaching position was in the Beaver Township Schools east of Humboldt. She later taught in the Head Start system in Humboldt. Kay attended the State College of Iowa (University of Northern Iowa) where she received her B.A. in Elementary Education in 1973. She taught in the Goldfield School from 1967-1997.

In 1957, Kay married Gerald Heiter in the Zion Lutheran Church of Beaver Township and to this marriage three children were born, Michael, Cathy and Thomas. In 1971, she married Elmer Meinke at the Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in Eagle Grove and to this union was added five stepchildren, Nikki, Carl, Donna, David, Curtis and a daughter, Cheryl was born in 1972.

Kay was an active member of the Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in Eagle Grove and LWML. She enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren and was involved in numerous community organizations and activities.

Kay is survived by her children, Michael Heiter and wife, Nancy of Charles City, Cathy Crossley and husband, Kent of Hardy, Thomas Heiter of Salina, Kansas, Nikki Rick and husband, Dean of Eagle Grove, Carl Meinke and wife, Suwalee of Leavenworth, Kansas, Donna Jones and husband, Elmer of Eldridge, David Meinke of Hamilton, Curtis Meinke and wife, Karla of Goldfield and Cheryl Warming and husband, Matthew of Baraboo, Wisconsin; a sister, Karen Barber and husband, Darrel of Onawa; 20 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many other aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Elmer; and one granddaughter, Jennifer.

Nicholas "Nick" Shaw

February 21, 2008

Nicholas "Nick" Arthur Shaw, 24, of Clarion, passed away on Saturday, February 16, 2008, at his home in Clarion.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, February 20, at the St. Olaf Lutheran Church, rural Belmond. Pastor Lowell Halvorson officiated at the 10:30 a.m. service. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Nicholas Arthur Shaw, was born on April 6, 1983 in Omaha, Nebraska, the son of Dana Lindvall and Raymond Shaw. Dana and Nick moved back to Clarion where he was raised, graduating from the Clarion-Goldfield High School in 2001. After high school he attended Iowa Lakes Community College in Emmetsburg for auto mechanics and later transferred to Hawkeye Tech in Waterloo. He returned to Clarion and has been employed at Hagie Manufacturing since March 2005.

During high school Nick wrestled, played football and ran track. He was a member of 4-H for six years. He enjoyed hunting and was a member of the Hagie's bowling team. Nick was an avid Raiders and Iowa Hawkeye fan. His best times were spent with his family and friends.

Nick was a member of the St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Belmond.

Nick is survived by his mother, Dana Lindvall and fiancée, Mark Southard of Clarion; father, Raymond Shaw of Elkhorn, Nebraska; maternal grandmother, Thelma Lindvall of Clarion; maternal grandfather, Richard Lindvall of Clarion; maternal great-grandmother, Cleona Tegland of Belmond; paternal grandmother, June Shaw of Clarion; paternal grandfather, Jim Shaw of Eagle Grove; special friend, Tara Sebert and daughter, Makaylee of Clarion; four half-brothers, Alex, Ryan, John and Scott; and two aunts, two uncles, several cousins and a host of friends and other extended family.

He was preceded in death by his maternal great-grandfathers, Leslie Tegland and Nels Lindvall; and great-grandmother, Violet Lindvall.

Muriel Marie Licklider

February 28, 2008

Muriel M. Licklider, 87, of Clarion, passed away on Saturday, February 23, 2008, at Careage of Clarion, after a brief respiratory illness.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 1, at the Ewing Funeral Home in Clarion. Pastor Don Morrison will officiate at the 1:30 p.m. service. Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery, Rowan. Visitation will be held at the Ewing Funeral Home one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.

Muriel Marie Rietz, was born on January 3, 1921 in Rowan. She was raised in the Rowan area and graduated from the Rowan High School in 1938. In 1946, she married Wayne Licklider and they were married for 42 years. They lived briefly in St. Louis, moved back to Rowan, and then to Clarion in 1965.

Muriel loved her home, family and music.

She is survived by her children, Sheila Flatebo and husband, Alvin and Dale Licklider and wife, Kathy, all of Kansas City, Missouri; four grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Pauline Licklider of Winterset and Jean Rietz of southeast Iowa; a brother-in-law, Everett Smith of Pennsylvania; two nieces; and three nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne; two sisters, Anne and Nina; and three brothers, Karl, E.A. and Paul.

Curtis D. Olson

March 6, 2008

Curtis D. Olson, 74, of Cascade, died unexpectedly on Sunday, February 24, 2008, at his home.

The family will greet friends and family from 9:30-10:30 a.m., on Saturday, March 1, at the Reiff Funeral Home in Cascade. A Masonic service will be held at 10:30 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. A Flag Presentation will be conducted by the Cascade American Legion Post #528. A memorial service will also be held at a later date in Humboldt.

Curtis D. Olson, was born on July 25, 1933 in Bode, the son of Henry M. and Cora (Opheim) Olson. Upon completion of high school, he worked for Northwestern Bell until he was called to the Army to serve his country, where he excelled in sniper and communications training. After completing this duty, he returned to work for Northwestern Bell. He continued to work in the telephone industry for 48 years, managing independent telephone companies in Lone Rock, Iowa and Goldfield, Iowa; Green City, Missouri and Cascade, Iowa, retiring in 1999.

Curt was united in marriage to Gael Tegland on March 29, 1958, at the Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Humboldt. Their marriage was blessed with four children.

Curt was active in and served as President and Director of the Iowa Telephone Association, being passionate about bringing big-city technologies to rural communities. He was a member of the Burns Masonic Ledge #173 in Monticello, Iowa, an amateur radio enthusiast and was active in various civic projects, such as the Tri-County Historical Society and designing and building the golf course in Goldfield. He enjoyed genealogy and loved to play golf.

He is survived by his wife, Gael of Cascade; daughter, Kate Ryan and husband, Paul; daughter, Jenni Graham; son, Tom Olson and wife, Holly of Ft. Myers, Florida; daughter, Sarah Davis; six grandchildren; sisters, Thelma, Melba, Aleda, Jorine and Mildred.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Henry, Orville, Ronald and James; and two sisters, Lucille and Charlotte.

Adolphe Tendall

March 6, 2008

Adolphe
Tendall, 96, formerly of Wright County, died peacefully on Friday, February 29, 2008, at the Eastern Star Masonic Home in Boone.

His body has been gifted to the University Hospital Department of Anatomy in Iowa City. A memorial service will be held in Boone at a later date.

Adolphe was born on February 11, 1912 near Helmar, in Kendall County, Illinois, the son of Thomas and Hannah (Anderson) Tendall. The family moved to Iowa when Adolphe was three years of age and began farming in Wright County. Adolphe was the youngest child and had eight siblings, five brothers and three sisters. He was proud to have lived longer than any of his siblings. Adolphe farmed in Wright County for 42 years before retiring and moving to Ames in 1975.

He enjoyed bowling, playing cards, dancing and activities at the Heartland Senior Center in Ames. He loved playing croquet, horseshoes and hunting pheasants. He enjoyed visiting with people and will be remembered for his sense of humor and his smile.

Adolphe is survived by four children, Elaine Overton, Harold Tendall, Jean Lien and Russell Tendall; numerous grandchildren; one niece, Donna Severtsgaard of Vinton; and longtime friend, Ramona Esbeck of Ames.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Vera Hagen Tendall; and an adopted daughter, Jean Lipscomb.

Memorials may be made to the St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Belmond, Iowa.
