Raymond "Ray" W. Hagie
November 2, 2006
Longtime
Clarion businessman and former State Senator, Raymond "Ray"
Hagie, died on Wednesday, October 25, 2006, at the Wright
Medical Center in Clarion, at the age of 96. Hagie was the
founder of Hagie's Hybrids, Inc. and the Hagie Manufacturing
Company.
Ray Hagie, was born on February 1, 1910, on the Dayton
Township farm of his parents, William J. and Minnie Hagie.
Following graduation from the Clarion High School, where he
was involved in football, wrestling and track, he attended
Iowa State College in Ames, studying animal husbandry.
Upon graduation he returned to the family farm and helped
expand and improve the shorthorn cattle herd and the
cropping operation. He became interested in something new
called hybrid seed corn.
After marrying June Remington on November 3, 1935 in Ames,
the couple moved back to the farm where Ray continued his
agricultural interests, particularly the hybrid seed corn.
The seed corn activity developed from hobby to neighborhood
sales to Hagie's Adapted Hybrids.
In the early 1940's, Ray and June Hagie moved Hagie's
Hybrids, Inc. to a farm closer to Clarion. Shortly after
this move, Ray built a self-propelled "people mover" to help
in the detasseling operation of seed corn production.
Adapting a sprayer attachment to the detasseler resulted in
the first commercially produced high clearance
self-propelled sprayer. Demand for this machine necessitated
the founding of the Hagie Manufacturing Company.
Ray was very involved in activities outside the business. As
a supporter of Iowa State he served on the Board of
Governors, the Athletic Council, the CIRAS Advisory Council
and was honored as Cy's Favorite Alum. He was a member of
the founding committee for Living History Farms and served
as Chairman of the Iowa Manufacturers Association.
His interest in local politics led to his election as a
State Representative and State Senator. He directed Ronald
Reagan's Iowa Campaign in 1976 and 1980.
A memorial service was held on Friday, October 27, at the
Clarion United Church of Christ Congregational. Private
Inurnment will be in the Evergreen Cemetery at a later date.
Ray Hagie, is survived by his wife, June of 71 years; a son,
John and wife, Barbara of Clarion; a daughter, Margaret Severino and husband, Frank of Des Moines; son-in-law, Ted
West of Chicago; eight grandchildren; and fourteen
great-grandchildren.

parents; two brothers; and a sister.
