Kenneth A. Asche
January 8, 2004
Memorial
services for Kenneth A. Asche, 70, of Clarion will be
held on Saturday, January 10, at 11:00 a.m., at the Foust
Funeral Home in Eagle Grove, with visitation one hour
prior to the service. Kenneth Asche passed away on
Friday, January 2, 2004, at his home.
Kenneth A. Asche was born on June 23, 1933 in Kanawha, the son of Angle and
Alice (Omvig) Asche. He was raised and educated in
Eagle Grove.
On August 25, 1951, Kenneth married Bea Swenson at Webster City. He then
married Zatha Patterson in 1967 in South Dakota. She
preceded him in death in 1993. Kenneth worked at the
Hormel plant in Fort Dodge for 30 years, retiring in
1982. He enjoyed gardening, horse races, fishing,
sight-seeing, baseball and family.
Survivors include his four sons, Carl and wife, Linda of Morena,
California, Verne of San Bernadino, California, Ken
and wife, Peg of Rialto, California and Danny and
wife, Diane of Hemet, California; four grandchildren;
four sisters, Mary Henningson of Clear Lake, Mildred
Reed of Eagle Grove, Alice Jean Lessmeier and husband,
Harold of Fort Dodge and Linda Asche of Eagle Grove;
seven brothers, Don Asche of Eagle Grove, Richard
Asche and wife, Janis of Clarion, Ronald Asche and
wife, Fran of Caldwell, Idaho, Lawrence Asche and
wife, Amy of Eagle Grove, Robert Asche and wife, Judy
of Eagle Grove, John Asche and wife, Cindy of Eagle
Grove and Terry Arne and wife, Vicki of Eagle Grove; and
his first wife, Beatrice Asche of San Bernadino,
California.
Preceding him in death were his parents; wife, Zatha; brothers, Ed and
Joe; 2 sisters-in-law; and 2 brothers-in-law.

Simone
Genevieve Hardinger
January 8, 2004
Simone
Genevieve Hardinger, age 79, of Ankeny, formerly of
Clarion, passed away on January 2, 2004, at the Mary
Greeley Hospital in Ames, Iowa.
Funeral services were
held on Tuesday, January 6, at 10:30 a.m., at the
United Methodist Church with Rev. Don Morrison
officiating. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery.
Simone Hardinger was born on October 25, 1924 in Belgium. She married
Carroll Dayne Hardinger on August 24, 1946 in
LeChenay, France.
In 1948 they moved to Green City, Missouri and then later made their home
in Clarion, Iowa to raise their family. After
retirement they moved to Ankeny, to be closer to their
children.
Simone is survived by her three sons, James Hardinger and his wife,
Maggie of Boone, Richard Hardinger of Ankeny and Gary Hardinger and his wife, Donna of Strong City, Kansas; one daughter, Kim Shannahan and her finance, Rex
Kingery both of Ankeny; and one sister, Armande Gouge
of LeChenay, France. She has nine grandchildren and
four great-grandchildren.
She was proceeded in death by her parents; and five siblings all from
France; her husband, Carroll Dayne Hardinger; a
granddaughter; and two great-grandsons.

Jennie Christians
January 15, 2004
Funeral services for Jennie Van Dyken Christians, 89, of Kanawha, were
held on Saturday, January 10, 2004, at the Wright
Christian Reformed Church, rural Kanawha. Jennie
Christians passed away on January 6, 2004, at the Kanawha
Community Nursing Home, where she had been a resident
the past three years. Interment was in the Wright
Christian Reformed Church Cemetery.
Jennie, the daughter of Harry and Lavina Broekema Van Dyken was born
on December 21, 1914, in Manhatten, Montana. On August
13, 1959, she married Andy H. Christians and they made
their home in the Kanawha area.
Jennie loved growing flowers, especially roses, and often tried new
varieties. She was also an accomplished
seamstress and homemaker. She was a member of the
Wright Christians Reformed Church and the Ladies Aid.
Survivors include her step-daughter, Ardith DeYoung and husband, Al of
Crown Point, Indiana; and step-son, Ron Christians and
his wife, Virginia of Kanawha. She also leaves nine
step-grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Andy; step-daughter,
Janet; four brothers and two grandchildren.

Tim M.
Roosa
January 15, 2004
Funeral services for Tim M. Roosa, 49, of
Eagle Grove, were held on Saturday, January 10, at 10:30 a.m., at the United Methodist Church, Eagle Grove. Tim
Roosa passed away on January 7, 2004.
Tim Roosa was born
on April 6, 1954 in Clarion, the son
of William and Dolores (Paine) Roosa. He was raised
and educated in the Clarion area, graduating from the
Clarion High School, Class of 1972. He then attended
Utah State for two years.
On December 14, 1974, Tim was united in marriage with
Selvie Ibrahim at the United Method ist
Church in Clarion. They have lived in Eagle Grove
since their marriage.
Tim worked for Promico, Umthun Trucking and Land
O'Lakes Farmland until the time of his death. He was a
member of the United Methodist Church in Eagle Grove.
He enjoyed woodworking, watching football and followed
college and local wrestling.
Survivors include his wife, Selvie of Eagle Grove;
son, Jason and wife, Tiffany of Sioux City; daughter,
Kathy Nelson and husband, Greg of Goldfield; five
grandchildren; mother, Dolores Bowman and husband, Don
of Clarion; three brothers, Steve of LeMars, Pat of
Eagle Grove and Russ of Florida; and one sister, Jane
Bell of Texas.
He was preceded in death by his father, Bill.

Robert
A. (Bob) Carlson
February 19, 2004
Robert A. (Bob) Carlson, 71, of Surprise, Arizona, passed away at his
home on Wednesday, January 7, 2004.
A memorial service was held
on Monday, January 12, at the New
Song United Methodist Church.
Robert A. Carlson was born
on March 3, 1932, on a farm in
Wright County, the youngest child of Ole A. and Bertha
M. Carlson. Robert was educated in Wright County. He
enlisted in the Air Force on July 9, 1949, and was
honorably discharged on December 20, 1952.
Robert and Mary Ann Mechem were united in marriage on
May 8, 1955. They were the parents of six children.
The family moved to Flagstaff, Arizona in September of
1962. Robert worked as an auto mechanic for McCoy
Motors until he retired in 1980 due to heart problems.
The couple retired to Surprise, Arizona in June of
2002.
Robert is survived by his wife, Mary of Surprise,
Arizona; two sons, Steven of Tucson, Arizona and Timothy
and wife, Toby of Prescott, Arizona; three daughters,
Robin Goodall of South Lake, Texas, Kelly Carlson of
Cape Code, Massachusetts and Kimberly Lauger of Tucson,
Arizona; 14 grandchildren; 3
great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son,
Joel; one grandson, Kyle Lauger; three brothers and
one sister.

Louise Patterson
January 15, 2004
Funeral services for Louise Patterson were held on Wednesday, January 14, in
Waterloo with committal services at 3:00 p.m., at the
Clarion Evergreen Cemetery. A memorial fund will be
established. The Locke Funeral Home was in charge of
the arrangements.
Louise Patterson, 96, Cedar Falls, passed away on
January 10, 2004, after a three month battle with
cancer.
Louise was born on February 17, 1907 in South Dakota, grew up in western
Minnesota and moved to Iowa, south east of Clarion
when she married in 1927. They moved to rural
Parkersburg in 1956 and to rural Cedar Falls in 1976.
She was very dedicated to her Lord, her family and to
farm life. She was also active with crafts, cards and letters.
She is survived by her eight children, Don of Cedar Falls, Dean (Gail) of
Washington, Clint (Luanne) of Minnesota, Harlan
(Kathy) of Ohio, Lee (Sally) of Clarksville, Jerry of
Illinois, John (Margaret) of Cedar Falls and Joan
(Gary) Frieling of Wisconsin; 24 grandchildren; 55
great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; and
in addition many relatives and friends.
Preceding her in death was her husband, Ted in 1982; an infant daughter;
and a grandson.

Robert Janssen
January 22, 2004
Robert Janssen, 90, of Buffalo Center, died on Saturday,
January 10, 2004, at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa at
Mason City.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, January 13, at
the First Reformed Church
in Buffalo Center. Rev. William Peake officiated at
the 10:30 a.m. service. Burial was in the Ramsey Reformed
Church Cemetery, rural Titonka.
Robert Spear Janssen was born on March 9, 1913 at Lakota, the son of Aggo
and Stena (Spear) Janssen. He was second youngest of
13 children.
He and Anna Radmaker were united in marriage on June 26, 1934. Anna
passed away on May 25, 1939.
On February 12, 1941, Robert married Eka Dirkson at the First Reformed
Church parsonage in Buffalo Center. Together they made
Buffalo Center their home.
Bob owned and operated the Janssen Locker for many years. He trucked
hogs, drove the school bus for the Buffalo Center
Community School, was a Police Chief of Buffalo
Center, was on the Volunteer Fire Department, worked
at Winnebago Industries and also assisted at both the Schutter Funeral Home and the Winter Funeral Home.
Bob is survived by his daughters, Agnes Hartman of Crystal lake
and Carolyn Vodraska and husband, Mike of Clarion; four
grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one
great-great-granddaughter; and three sisters-in-law,
Ella Dirkson, Fannie Janssen and Dorothy Hofbauer, all
of Buffalo Center.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Anne; wife, Eka in 1997;
son-in-law, Ronald Hartman; and by all of his
siblings.

Vincent Joseph Saccento, Jr.
January 22, 2004
Vincent Joseph Saccento, Jr., 52, of Goldfield, passed
away on Sunday, January 11, 2004, at his daughter’s home
in St. Peters, Missouri.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 17, at the Holmes Baptist
Church. Pastor Odle officiated at the 10:30 a.m.
service. Burial and Military Honors by the 3655
Maintenance Company was in the Glenwood Cemetery,
Goldfield. Memorials may be directed to the Holmes
Baptist Church Building Fund and Youth Ministries.
Vincent Joseph Saccento, Jr. was born on July 29, 1951 in Fort Dodge, the
son of Vincent Joseph and Lois (Vest) Saccento, Sr. He
was raised and educated in Goldfield.
On January 29, 1972, Vince and Jackie Crane were united in marriage at
Goldfield. Vince served in the United States Army
during the Vietnam War and also as a Sergeant with the
Iowa National Guard until the time of his death. Vince
worked for Wright County Road Maintenance for over 30
years.
Vince was an active member of the Holmes Baptist Church, served the City
of Goldfield as a volunteer fire fighter, and was a
reserve police officer.
Vince is survived by his wife, Jackie of Goldfield; one daughter, Sara
Wilson and husband, Wade of St. Peters, Missouri; one
son, Joseph Saccento of Goldfield; two grandchildren;
mother, Lois Saccento of Goldfield; two sisters, Irene
Adamson and Leanna Glover of Volin, South Dakota.
He was preceded in death by his father, Vincent J. Saccento, Sr.

Joan Potter
January 22, 2004
Joan Potter, 71, died on Wednesday,
January 14, 2004, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in
Phoenix, Arizona.
A memorial service was held on Thursday, January 22, at
the Immanuel Lutheran
Church in Iowa Falls.
Joan Jerde was born on July 15, 1932, the daughter of Melvin and Mabel
(Joan) Jerde. She graduated from the Clarion High School
and attended Iowa State University in Ames. On
December 13, 1953, Joan and E. Monte Potter were united
in marriage in Clarion. She worked with her husband at
Harris-Potter Insurance from 1967-1993. She was active
in church and Bible studies.
Joan is survived by a son, Tod and wife, Michele of Mesa, Arizona; a
daughter, Katy Clark and husband, Jere of Phoenix,
Arizona; two granddaughters; sister-in-law, Jan Jerde
of Clarion; and one nephew, Joe Jerde of Clarion.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and one brother, Jim Jerde.

Leta
Iris Holden
January 22, 2004
Leta Iris Holden,
84, of Goldfield, died on Sunday, January 18, 2004, at the
Humboldt Care Center South.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, January 22, at the Foust Funeral Home
in Eagle Grove. Burial was in the Troy Township
Cemetery south of Eagle Grove.
Leta Iris Gibson was born April 18, 1919 in Elkhart,
Indiana the daughter of Gerald O. and Ida Mae
(Clagett) Gibson. During the 1920's they moved to
Buffalo, New York and then during the depression they
moved back to Milford, Indiana, where Leta completed
her education.
Leta married Clyde H. Downes in 1936. They later
divorced. On December 24, 1955, Leta married Paul F.
Holden in Angola, Indiana.
During World War II, Leta worked as a final finish
inspector for marine trucks International Harvester.
She also worked in merchandising for Grand Leader and
Goldplats. Leta and Mary Sampson were part owners of
"M Bar L" in Eagle Grove.
Leta was a member of the United Brethren Church of
Salem, Indiana. She spent much of her middle life
assisting and caring for her parents.
Survivors include her husband, Paul of Goldfield; two
sons, Gerald H. Downes of Marion, Indiana and Duane G.
Downes and wife, Arlene of Fort Wayne, Indiana; two
stepsons, Larry Holden and wife, Linda of Convoy,
Ohio and Barry Holden of Iowa City; four grandchildren;
eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Kyle Gibson of
Sacramento, California; one sister, Alice Stetz of
Eagle Grove; and two aunts, Margaret Clagett of Clarion
and Charlotte Clagett of Boone.
Leta was preceded in death by her parents; and one son,
William Downes.

Arland
LeRoy Anderson
January 29, 2004
Arland LeRoy Anderson, 76, of Clarion, passed away
on
Thursday, January 22, 2004, at the Wright Medical
Center in Clarion.
Funeral services were held on Monday, January 26, at
the St. John’s Catholic
Church in Clarion. Fr. David Beckman officiated at the
10:30 a.m. service. Burial was in the St. John’s Catholic
Cemetery, Clarion.
Arland L. Anderson was born on June 11, 1927 in Eagle Grove, the son of
Leonard and Wilma Anderson. He and his family moved to
Clarion at the age of 11. He attended Clarion School
and graduated from Clarion High School in 1945. Arlie
enlisted in the U.S. Navy during his senior year of
high school. He left immediately after graduation and
served until 1946.
On June 28, 1947, Arland and Dorothy Reiland were united in marriage at
the
St. John’s Catholic Church in Clarion.
Arlie worked for the Wright County Monitor from 1940-1956. He was
employed with the Chicago Great Western Railroad which
was later Chicago Northwestern Railroad, from
1952-1987. Arlie was also employed at Buttr’ Topp
Bakery at Clear Lake from 1956-1960 while off work
from the Railroad. He retired early after suffering a
stroke in 1987.
He was a member of the St. John’s Catholic Church and had served on the
Parish Council. He enjoyed golf, bingo and
woodworking.
Arlie is survived by his wife, Dorothy of Clarion; three children, James
and wife, Vicki of Albert Lea, Minnesota, Deborah
Downs and husband, Mike of Waterloo and Joe of Clarion;
six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one
sister, Virginia Melhus of Clear Lake.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Wilma Anderson; and
one sister, Ruby Smith of Dubuque.

David
Paul Knuths
January 29, 2004
David Paul Knuths, 50, of Hull, formerly of Clarion, passed away on
Thursday, January 22, 2004, at the Hope Haven Northside
Court in Hull.
Funeral services were held
on Monday, January 26, at the
Ewing Dugger Funeral Home, Clarion. Pastor, Janet Wearda officiated at the 10:30 a.m. service. Burial
was in the Galt Cemetery.
David Paul Knuths, was born
on September 18, 1953 in
Clarion, the son of Dale and May Bell (Jacobson) Knuths. He was raised and educated in Clarion and
graduated from the Eagle Grove High School.
David lived at home for a while and moved to Woodward
where he attended Woodward College. He has lived in
Hope Haven, Rock Rapids, Webster City,
Fort Dodge, Nora Springs
and settled in Hope Haven Northside Court in Hull.
David always enjoyed coming home for family
gatherings, bowling and pizza parties. He was an avid
football fan, his favorite team being the Minnesota
Vikings. He was also involved in the Special Olympics
competing in bowling.
David is survived by his brother, Alan of Pocahontas;
two sisters, Alice Retleff and husband, Larry of
Rowan and Carol Madden and husband, Robert of Livingston,
Texas; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents; parents;
sister-in-law, Sharon Knuths; and two nephews.

Alberta
Jean Middleton
January 29, 2004
Alberta Jean Middleton, 79, of Belmond, passed away
on Friday, January 23,
2004, at the Belmond Medical Center.
Alberta Jean Thayer was born
on August 2, 1924 in
Belmond, the daughter of Claude Harold and Clara Belle
(Spurlin) Thayer. She was baptized and confirmed in the
United Methodist Church in Belmond. She attended
school in Belmond. During high school she was a
cheerleader for four years. Alberta graduated from
the Belmond High School in 1942.
On March 2, 1942, she was united in marriage to Richard
Guy Middleton in Bethany, Missouri. The couple lived
in Waco, Texas and Clarion before settling in Belmond.
Alberta worked part time for Drs. Bob Misner and Les
Classic at the veterinary clinic and for Ris-Van. She
then worked for Dr. A.M. Larson from 1961 to 1987. She
loved to golf and was a member of the Belmond Country
Club. She also bowled for over 25 years on the Belmond
Women's Bowling League. She was a member of the United
Methodist Church in Belmond.
Alberta is survived by three sons, Thomas and wife,
Vicky of Belmond, Ronald and wife, Cheryl of Omaha,
Nebraska and Marc and wife, Nancy of Belmond; four
grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters,
Irene Stoffer and husband, Ed of Belmond and Genevieve
Smith of Belmond; special brother and sister-in-law,
Frank and Jane Middleton of Clarion; extended family,
Rosemary Middleton of Belmond and extended
grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband,
Richard; sister, Dorothy and brother-in-law, George
(Coonie) Smith.

Edmund
Frank Walker, M.D.
February 5, 2004
Edmund Frank Walker M.D., a Psychiatrist and Neurologist, died on January
26, 2004, in Los Angeles at the age of 93.
A native of
Clarion, he graduated from the University of Iowa (BA
1932, MD 1936) and served in the Army Medical Corps
during World War II after completing his residency at
Yale. Dr. Walker's father was Herbert Peter Walker, M.D.
(1875-1960), a long-time Clarion physician, and his
grandfather, William E. Walker (1835-1931 ), was a
contractor and grocer in Clarion.
Following discharge at the end of the World War II,
Edmund Walker accepted a position on the faculty at
the University of Michigan, but in 1948 moved to
California to start a private practice in Los Angeles
which continued until his retirement in 1991. Dr.
Walker served as a consultant to the Los Angeles
Unified School District and was a Clinical Instructor
at Loma Linda University. He was on the staff of St.
Vincent's Medical Center in Los Angeles for more than
25 years, as well as the White Memorial Hospital and
Adventist Hospital in Glendale.
Dr. Walker's wife of 53 years, Charlotte Frisch Walker
M.D., was also a Psychiatrist. She died in 1991.
Dr. Walker is survived by his companion, Frances Solk; and by his son,
Dr. Cedric Walker of New Orleans; and two grandsons.
