Blow
February 12, 2004
June Blow, 80, of Waupun, Wisconsin, died on Tuesday. February 3, 2004, at
the Waupun Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services were held
on Saturday, February 7, at
the Union-Congregational Church in Waupun. Rev.
Michael Bausch officiated at the 4:30 p.m. service.
June Azeltine, was born
on June 28, 1923 in Rowan, the
daughter of Ray and Jessie Box Azeltine. June was a
graduate of the Rowan High School and Iowa State
Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
On December 27,
1944, she and Bill Blow were united in marriage in
Rowan. Following their marriage the couple resided in
Waupun all of their married life. In June's early
years she was employed by Bethleham Steel in Long
Beach, California and she and her husband, Bill owned
and operated the Blow Hardware in Waupun for several
years.
June was a member of the Union-Congregational Church
in Waupun, where she was active in various
capacities of the
church. She was also a member of the Daughter's of the
American Revolution and a member and past officer of
Job's Daughters.
She is survived by one son, James Blow of Fond du Lac;
two daughters, Patricia Paulick and husband, John of
Oshkosh, Wisconsin and Nancy Balgie and husband, Fred of
Waupun, Wisconsin; four grandchildren; and one
brother, Richard Azeltine of Chatsworth, California.
She was preceded in death by her husband; and two
brothers.

Gladys
May Kottler
February
12, 2003
Gladys May Kottler, 97, of Clarion, died on Thursday,
February 5, 2004, at the USA Healthcare Center in
Clarion.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, February 10, at the United Methodist
Church, Clarion. Pastor Don Morrison officiated at the
10:00 a.m. service. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery,
Clarion.
Gladys M. Kottler, was born on July 14, 1906, in Swea City the daughter of
John M. and Anna (Langley) Kottler. She moved to
Clarion in 1910, where she continued to live for all
of her life. In March of 2001 Gladys fell and broke
her hip. She moved into the USA Healthcare Center in
April, where she lived until her recent passing.
At the age of 13, she was baptized and joined the United Methodist Church.
She was a member of the Grace Stockwell Circle, the
sewing group, Women’s Christian Temperance Union,
Heritage Club at First National Bank and the Classic
Club of Brenton. Her hobbies included crocheting,
quilting, knitting, gardening (especially flowers) and
general crafting.
Gladys enjoyed spending a lot of time with her nieces and nephews. She
also loved traveling throughout the United States. She
had visited every state in the union except three.
Gladys is survived by two nephews, Charles Robert Stecher and wife,
Gladys of Ottawa, Illinois and John William Stecher
and wife, Evelyn of Des Moines; two nieces, Dianne
Dorsey and husband, Tom of Clarion and Dawn Kottler of
Ames; 15 great-nieces and nephews; along with numerous
great-great-nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Acelia; a brother,
Lester; and an niece, Holly Ann.

Ione M. Ziegler
February 12, 2004

Ione M. Ziegler, 102, of Clarion,
passed away on Sunday, February 8, 2004, at the USA
Healthcare Center, Clarion. Services will be held at a
later date.
Ione M. Ziegler was born on October 13, 1901 in LeMars, the daughter of
William and Caroline (Boland) Pech. The family then
moved to Algona where she was raised and educated.
In 1938 Ione was united in marriage to Henry “Ad” Ziegler. During the war
years she worked for the Selective Service. She was a
former member of the Eastern Star, Clarmond Country Club,
and a life long member of the Clarion Church of
Christ.
Ione is survived by two sisters, Dolores Maxson of Des Moines and Lois
Kohl of Burnet, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, “Ad” in 1997; two
sisters, Vivian Reynolds and Marienne Hedberg; and two
brothers, Don and Melvin.

Frederick W. Markham
February 19, 2004
Frederick W. Markham, 77, of Belmond, passed away on Sunday, February 8,
2004, at the Belmond Medical Center.
Funeral services were held
on Wednesday, February 11, at the
Calvary Baptist Church, Belmond. Burial was in the
Belmond Cemetery.
Frederick W. Markham, was born
on February 4, 1927, in
Franklin County southeast of Meservey, the son of
Ellis and Lizzie Markhan. Fred started country school
near Meservey. The family moved to a farm northeast of
Rowan and he attended grade school and high school
there, where he played basketball and baseball. Fred
graduated in 1945 and continued to play basketball and
baseball for the town team.
Fred started raising Holstein dairy cattle as a boy
and had many livestock projects on his father's farm.
After graduation, Fred bought a truck and did general
trucking of livestock and grain along with helping his
father on the farm.
On February 14, 1948, Fred married Jean Rae Wharton at
The Little Brown Church in Nashua. They moved a little
house onto his parents' farm and they lived there
until 1949. The couple then started farming southeast
of Thornton.
In 1962, Fred and Jean had a dairy sale and moved to a
bigger farm northeast of Clarion. He was a grain
farmer and sold feeder pigs for 25 years. Rheumatoid
arthritis forced Fred to give up farming. In 1987,
Fred and Jean moved to Belmond where they had bought a
home in 1979.
Fred is survived by his wife, Jean; three daughters,
Peggy Wolters and husband, Gary, Diane Kallal and
husband, Ronald and Suzanne Kocurek; seven grandchildren;
two great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Eleanor
Larrick of Osage and Gladys Leist of Rochester,
Minnesota; one brother, Donald and wife, Joyce of
Belmond; and many nieces and nephews.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents; and one
younger sister, Maurine Peters.

Jeannette Margaret Hall
February 19, 2004
Jeanette Margaret Gerhardi (Van Drie) Hall, of Belmond, died
on Thursday,
February 12, 2004, at the Belmond Medical Center.
Funeral services were held
on Sunday, February 15, at
the United Church of Christ Congregational in Belmond.
Rev. Lynne Spencer-Smith officiated at the 2:00 p.m.
service. Burial was in the Belmond Cemetery. Memorials
may be sent to the Hospice of North Iowa or the
Belmond-Klemme School Outdoor Classroom Project, P.O.
Box 224, Belmond, Iowa 50421.
Mrs. Hall was a native of Ashton and former teacher in
Osceola County, Emmet Consolidated School System,
Paullina, Spencer Catholic School, and at the Belmond
Schools.
She was active in Trees Forever, the Wright County
Republican Women and Wright County Republican Central
Committee. Jeannette had been involved for many years
in the Belmond Area Arts Council, Eimbrink American
Legion Auxiliary, Wright County Genealogical
Searchers, and was active in the Women's Fellowship at
the United Church of Christ, Belmond.
She had been married to the late George Hall. She is
survived by three brothers, Gerhardt Van Drie and
wife, Char of El Segundo, California, John Van Drie
and wife, Joyce of Lansing, Illinois and Louis Van Drie
and wife, Shirley of Columbia, Missouri; one sister,
Sophia Roberts and husband, Milo of Belmond; and 22 nieces
and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Gerrit and
Sophia Margaretha Gerharda (Feberwee) Van Drie who
were Dutch immigrants; and a brother, Rudy Van Drie, a
former State Senator from Ames, Story County.

Anna Margaret Huisinga
February 26, 2004
Anna Margaret Huisinga, 77, of Clarion, died on Thursday,
February 12, 2004, at the Wright Medical Center,
Clarion.
Funeral services were held on Monday, February 16, at the First Lutheran
Church, Clarion. Pastor Gary Boen officiated. Burial
was in the Evergreen Cemetery, Clarion.
Anna Margaret Schutt, was born on July 31, 1926 in Wright County, south of
Clarion, the daughter of Henry and Mabel (Heiden)
Schutt.
Anna attended and graduated from the rural school Williams #4 and went to
the Williams High School for the first two years. Anna
graduated from the Clarion High School in 1944, first in
her class. She attended Wartburg College in Waverly
and Ellsworth Junior College in Iowa Falls. She later
received her Master’s Degree from Drake in Des Moines.
She taught country school in Hardin and Hamilton counties for several
years and first grade in Hilltop in Webster City for
three years. Anna taught first grade and Learning
Disabilities in Clarion for many years. She will be
remembered for her love of children, her teaching, and
the special ability she had to teach children how to
read. When she retired from teaching in 1989 she
occasionally did private tutoring.
On June 30, 1954, Anna was united in marriage to Henry Huisinga of Kamrar.
She is survived by her husband, Henry of Clarion; one son, Henry Jacob Huisinga and wife, Nancy of Clarion; three
grandchildren; two brothers, Fred and wife, Mary and Tom
and wife, Pam all of Williams; two sisters, Marilyn Ubben of Williams and Sharon Brandt and husband,
Ronald of Ackley; her aunts and uncles and several
cousins, nieces, nephews; and many friends and loving
students.
Anna was preceded in death by her parents, Hank and Mabel Schutt; two
brothers, John Schutt of Blairsburg and William Schutt
of Alden.

Melvin
Maynard Darnell
February 19, 2004
Melvin Maynard Darnell, 79, of Eldon, Missouri, died
on Friday, February 13,
2004, at the Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco, Texas.
Memorial services will be held at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be sent to the American
Diabetes Association.
Melvin Maynard Darnell, was born
on February 2, 1925 in
Webster City, the son of Clarence Ray and Bertha
(Crouch) Darnell.
On May 4, 1946, Melvin and Rose Marie Dalbey were united in marriage in Webster City. Rose
Marie died on June 23, 1999.
Melvin was an Army veteran of World War II and served as Commander of the
Webster City American Legion Post 191 for several
years. He moved to the Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri
area from Webster City in 1968 and owned the Beachcomber
Resort. He worked for Pruitt Mobile Home Sales and
retired from Tasco Industries.
Survivors include three daughters, Constance Sweet of
Clarion, Sally Barr of Russellville, Missouri and
Denise Scrivner of Lake Ozark, Missouri; four
grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one granddaughter.

Michael
L. McPeak
February 19, 2004
Michael L. McPeak, 56, died on Saturday, February 14, 2004, at
the Mary Greeley
Medical Center in Ames. A memorial service was held on
Wednesday, February 18, at the St. Cecilia's Catholic
Church in Ames. Father Terry Rasmussen presided at the
10:30 a.m. service.
Michael L. McPeak, was born
on September 17, 1947 in Fort
Dodge, the son of Milford and Maxine McPeak. Michael
was raised on a farm near Renwick and graduated from
the
Boone Valley High School in Renwick. He enlisted in
the United States Army and proudly served his country
as a paratrooper of the 173rd and 82nd Airborne
Divisions in the United States, Germany and Viet Nam.
On June 21, 1969, he married Pamella Peterson. He
continued his education and was a certified flight
engineer on the DC9 and flew as a captain on both
DC9's and MD80's. Other ratings included Airline
Transport Pilot, Airline Multiengine Land, Commercial
Privileges and Airplane Single Engine Land. Mike was
employed by the Federal Aviation Administration as an
Airline Safety Inspector assigned to American
Airlines.
Survivors include his wife, Pam McPeak of Ames; one
daughter, Tricia Blanchard and husband, Joel of
Canton, Maine; one son, Brian McPeak and wife, Vanessa
of Livermore Falls, Maine; three grandchildren;
mother, Maxine McPeak of Renwick; and three brothers.
He was
preceded in death by his father, Milford; and an infant
brother.

Frankie
Jorgene "Jene" Bourgart
February 19, 2004
Frankie Jorgene “Jene” Bourgart, 67, died on Saturday,
February 14, 2004, at the Wright Medical Center,
Clarion.
A private family burial took place in the Evergreen Cemetery, Clarion. Upon Jene’s request, a memorial service will be held
on
Saturday, February 21, at the Kingdom Hall of
Jehovah’s Witnesses in Clarion.
Frankie (Weiner) Bourgart, was born on July 6, 1936 in Webster City, the
daughter of George and Belva (Coats) Weiner. She
attended the Clarion High School, lived in the San Diego
area for a few years, and returned to Clarion,
graduating in 1954.
After high school she married and was blessed with three children. In
1970, Jene married her second husband, William
Mulhern. The couple made their home in Clarion until
William’s passing in 1994. In 1997, Jene was united in
marriage to Charles Bourgart. They made their home in
Clarion until her recent passing.
Jene was a member of the Clarion Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses for
over 30 years. She was very active in teaching Bible
ministry. She had been the Iowa District Manager for
Sarah Coventry. Prior to her illness she was a
Certified Nursing Assistant at the USA Health Care
Center in Clarion. Jene loved music and spending time
with her grandchildren.
Jene is survived by her husband, Charles; three sons, Kirk Simons and
wife, Kristi of Eagle Grove, Kyle Simons of
Pleasantville and Kevin Simons of Clarion; father,
George Weiner of Clarion; one sister, Lonnie Hough of
Roach, Missouri; and four grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Belva; and second husband, Bill
Mulhern.

Harold
M. Stromquist
February 19, 2004
Harold M. Stromquist, 85, of Clarion, passed away on
Sunday, February 15, 2004, at the Wright Medical Center
in Clarion.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, February 19, at the
Dugger-Ewing Funeral Home in Clarion. Pastor Don
Morrison of the United Methodist Church will officiate
at the 1:00 p.m. service. Burial will be in the Evergreen
Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the
service on Thursday.
Harold Stromquist, was born on October 7, 1918 in Clarion, the son of Carl
and Mabel (Anderson) Stromquist. He was raised and
educated in Clarion and graduated from the Clarion
High School.
Harold worked at the family’s business, the Clarion Hatchery, until he
left to serve his country in World War II. He was a
member of the Army Air Corps in England as a radioman.
This sparked a life long hobby as a Ham radio
operator. Harold was a member of the local VFW and was
very proud of his military service for his country.
Harold though of himself as a carpenter for most of his life. In the
1970’s he was employed by Evans Lumber Company until
his retirement.
Harold is survived by his nephew, Robert Waters of Mackinaw, Illinois;
along with several great nieces and nephews; and other
relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother; and one sister.

Agnes
Margaret Schultz
February 19, 2004
Agnes Margaret Schultz, 87, of Clarion, passed away on
Monday, February 16, 2004, at the USA Health Care
Center in Clarion.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 20, at the First Lutheran
Church in Clarion. Rev. Gary Boen will officiate at
the 1:30 p.m. service. Burial will be in the Union
Cemetery, Humboldt.
Agnes Margaret Schultz, was born on June 11, 1916 in Rutland Township, the
daughter of Niels and Ida Oline (Tonderum) Schultz. As
a child she moved with her family to Minnesota where
she began school. The family returned to Iowa in 1927.
She attended several rural schools in Humboldt County,
including Maple Lawn and graduated from the Humboldt
High School in 1937.
After receiving secretarial training, she worked as a bookkeeper in
several places, the last being in Des Moines.
Following her retirement, she moved to Clarion. She
became a resident of the USA Health Care Center in
November of 1996 after suffering a stroke.
Agnes is survived by one sister, Helen Rasmussen and husband, Marshall of
Goldfield; one brother, Donald Schultz and wife, Fern
of Clarion; nieces and nephews; and a sister-in-law,
Shirley Schultz of Franklin, Virginia.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Oscar and
Eldon.

Christine Kahler DeLano
February 26, 2004
June Christine Kahler DeLano, 93, of Clarion, died
on
Thursday, February 19, 2004.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, February 24, at the Dugger Ewing
Funeral Home in Clarion. Stan Watne officiated at the
10:30 a.m. service. Burial was in the Evergreen
Cemetery, Clarion.
June Christine Kahler, was born on June 11, 1910 in rural Franklin County,
the daughter of Charles and Lena (Gerdes) Kahler.
She
married Alfred DeLano on June 2, 1928 in Marshalltown.
They shared 34 wonderful years together. In 1962 she
was employed by the Clarion Hospital in the Diet
Services Department where she later retired in 1972.
June was an active member of the United Church of
Christ Congregational, Royal Neighbors, and DFW Senior
Citizens. Her hobbies were quilting and crocheting, of
which many other creations were donated to the many
charity activities she supported.
June is survived by three sons, Herbert of White River, Arizona, Melvin
and wife, Rowena of Euless, Texas and Larry and wife, Raynee of Alamogordo, New Mexico; two sisters, Marie
Ruiter of Thornton and Avon Kohl of River Falls,
Wisconsin; 23 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren;
several great-great grandchildren; and a host of other
relatives and dear friends.
June was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Alfred; two brothers, Lavere and Donnie; one daughter, Shirley Lerdal; one
son, Gerald; one daughter-in-law, Betty; one grandson,
Herby; and her long time companion, Butterball her
cat.

Lou Horan
February 26, 2004
Mary Lou Horan, 67, of Opportunity Village in Clear Lake, passed away
on
Saturday, February 21, 2004n at the Mercy Medical Center
North Iowa, Mason City.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held
on Thursday,
February 26, at the St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Clear
Lake. Rev. Robert Hogan
will officiate at
the 10:30 a.m. service. Interment will be on Thursday, at
3:30 p.m., at the Calvary Cemetery, Eagle Grove. Rev.
David Beckman will officiate at the 10:30 a.m.
service. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. the day of
the service at the church.
Mary Lou Horan, was born
on April 10, 1936 in Clarion, the
daughter of Joseph Augustus and Alma H. (Carlson)
Horan. She grew up in Clarion and attended the St. John's
Catholic School. Mary Lou became a resident of
Opportunity Village in Clear Lake in 1976 and since
then has enjoyed many activities there including
music, crafts and computers. Mary Lou was a member of
the
St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Clear Lake.
Mary Lou is survived by a brother-in-law, Dick Forbes
and wife, Beverly of Eagle Grove; three nephews; and
one niece, Monica Siemens and husband, Ron of
Goldfield.
Mary Lou was preceded in death by her parents; and one
sister, Patricia A. Forbes.

Joyce
Minnie Hansen
March 11, 2004
Joyce Minnie Hansen, 70, of Audubon, died on Tuesday, February 24, 2004n at
the Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs.
Funeral services were held
on Friday, February 27, at the
Bethany Lutheran Church, northeast of Kimballton, Iowa.
Pastor Kevin Nelson officiated at the 2:00 p.m. service.
Interment was in the Bethany Lutheran Cemetery
northeast of Kimballton.
Joyce Minnie Miller, was born
on April
2, 1933, on her parents'
farm near Manilla. Joyce was baptized and confirmed at
the Methodist Church in Manilla. She attended the rural
school Iowa Township No. 3, near her farm home
northeast of Manilla, then graduated from the Manilla
Community High School with the Class of 1951.
On June 24,
1951, she was united in marriage to Marvin Lee Hansen
at the Methodist Church in Manilla. They operated
Marvin's family farm north of Kimballton until they
retired from farming in 1983 and in October of that
year, moved to their present home in Audubon.
Joyce was an active member of
the Bethany Lutheran Church,
northeast of Kimballton. She served as Secretary of
the Church Board. She enjoyed baby-sitting and
baby-sat for over
30 different children over
the years. She made and decorated special occasion
cakes and wedding cakes. She enjoyed making crafts and
was an exceptional seamstress.
Joyce is survived by her husband, Marvin of Audubon;
children, Barbara Hansen of Audubon and David Hansen and
wife, Tammy of Alden; seven grandchildren; brothers
and sisters, Everett Miller and wife, Donna of
Schleswig, Robert Miller and wife, Deanna of Galt and
Carol Lee Miller of Charter Oak: brothers-in-law,
George Manthe of Sac City, Charles Brightwell of
Creston and Larry Stauber of Lawton; many nieces, nephews
and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers and
sisters, Stella Manthe, Genevieve and husband, Carol
Vennink, Lynne Brightwell, Meredith Stauber and Keith
Miller; and an infant brother.

Donald
Haupt
March 3, 2004
Donald Haupt, 77, of Clarion, died
on
Friday, February 27, 2004, at the USA Health Care
Center in Clarion.
Memorial services were held on Tuesday, March 2, at the Trinity Lutheran
Church in Belmond. Pastor Rod Hopp officiated at the
11:00 a.m. service. Military rites were provided by the
Belmond Honor Guard. The body was cremated. Interment
was in the Evergreen Cemetery, Clarion.
Donald Haupt, was born on July 12, 1925 at Belmond, the son of Frank and
Kathryn (Smith) Haupt. He grew up on the farm and
worked at different farms until he went into the Army
for a period of two years. After returning from the
Army he continued to work on different farms.
On January 18, 1948, he was united in marriage to Wava Holmgaard in
Coulter. They farmed all their 56 years of married
life. To this union one son, Roger was born.
Donald is survived by his wife, Wava of Clarion; one son, Roger Haupt and
wife, Carol also of Clarion; two grandchildren; one
step-grandchild; one great-grandchild; three
brothers, Duane Haupt and wife, Darilyn, Bob Haupt and
Raymond Haupt and wife, Artherine; four sisters,
Lorraine Johnson and husband, Earl, Wilma Friesleben
and husband, Hartley, Minnie Olson and Helen Ahrens; two
sisters-in-law, Helen Haupt and Lynna Smith; many
nieces, nephews, friends and relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers and sisters-in-law, Edd
and Laura Haupt and Alvin and Esther Haupt; brother,
Bernard Haupt; sister, Mildred Buseman;
brothers-in-law, Clarence Olson, Irwin Buseman, Virgil
Ahrens and Harold Holmgaard Jr.; sister-in-law, Leona
Haupt; half-brother, Leo Smith; and several nieces and
nephews.
