Hubert Ellsworth "Hub" Colby

Hubert Ellsworth “Hub” Colby, 94, a
resident of the Belmond Health Care Center, died on Friday, April 11, 2003.
Funeral services were held on Monday, April 14, at the St. John’s Lutheran
Church, Belmond. Rev. Lowell Halvorson officiated at the 10:30 a.m. service.
Burial was in the Linwood Park Cemetery, Boone.
Hub Colby was born on July 21, 1908 in Lake Mills, the son of Dr. Joseph E.
and Millie (Ethel) Colby. He attended and graduated from the Lake Mills High
School and then attended Iowa State College.
He was united in marriage to
Faye Arlene Ferris on July 7, 1930, at Princeton, Missouri. Hub was a police
officer at Joice for a time and then was employed as a conservation officer
for the state of Iowa for 12 years, commencing his tenure as an officer at
Ledges State Park in Boone. He then spent time in the Sheldon area and later
served as a conservation officer in Wright County.
Hub was a veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard. He served stateside in Peoria,
Illinois, during World War II. Upon completion of his service in the
military he was employed as a supervisor for General Mills in Belmond from
1949-1965. When Central Soya acquired the Belmond location he and his wife
moved to Chicago, Illinois where he continued with General Mills as a plant
entomologist from 1965 until retirement in 1970. They then returned to Iowa
where they spent a short time in Lake Mills and them moved back to Belmond.
Hub was a long time member of the St. John’s Lutheran Church in Belmond and
was a member of the VFW. He became a resident of the Belmond Health Care
Center in November 2000, where his wife also lives.
He is survived by his wife, Faye Colby of Belmond; one daughter, Harriet
“Nubby” Woodin and husband, Richard of Clarion; one son, David and wife, Kay
of Silver Bay, Minnesota; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers; and one sister.

Elaine Brinkman
April 23, 2003
Elaine Brinkman, 74, of Clear
Lake, formerly of Clarion, died on Tuesday, April 15, 2003.
Funeral services were held on Friday, April 18, at the United Presbyterian
Church, Clarion. Rev. Candace Adams and Rev. Jerry Swanberg, officiated at
the 1:30 p.m. service. Interment was in the Evergreen Cemetery, Clarion. The Willim
Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Elaine Dahlgren was born on June 11, 1928, in Wright County the daughter of
Carl A. and Eva (Hardy) Dahlgren. She resided in Clarion for most of her
life.
On May 18, 1946, she and Duane Brinkman were united in marriage at The
Little Brown Church in Nashua. She owned and operated D & E Motors for 28
years and she also owned The Travel Connection in Clarion.
Elaine had retired to Clear Lake and enjoyed spending time with her
family. In recent years she enjoyed traveling to their lake home on Tablerock Lake outside of Branson, Missouri.
Elaine is survived by her husband, Duane of Clear Lake; two daughters,
Linda Casady and husband, Bill of Marshalltown and Diana Kalkbrenner of
Peoria, Illinois; five grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; one
sister, Vi Fisher and husband, Joe of Clarion; and one brother, Albert Dahlgren
and wife, Mary Jane of Clarion.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Melvin and
Carlton; and one sister, Vera Lofton.

Margaret "Meg" Eppel
April 23, 2003
Margaret “Meg” Eppel, 80, of Clarion, died on Monday,
April 21, 2003, at the Trinity Regional Hospital in Fort Dodge.
According to Meg’s wishes, no funeral services are planned. She has
donated her body to medical science.
Meg immigrated with her late husband, Harold Eppel, from South Africa to
the United States in 1990, to live with her daughter, Pat Crozier and her
husband, Dave in Clarion.
She had a great love of her family and was an avid reader and gardener.
She was always very appreciative of the privilege of becoming a United
States citizen.
Meg is survived by her daughter, Patricia Crozier and husband, Dave of
Clarion; two sons, Robert Eppel of Johannesburg, South Africa and John Eppel
of Bulwayo, Zimbabwe; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and two
brothers, Gilbert and Butch Hannan of South Africa.
