Marcella Howe

Marcella Howe, 84, of Nora Springs, died Friday, Oct. 3, 2008, at the Nora Springs Care Center in Nora Springs.

A funeral Mass for Marcella Howe will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. Reverend Brian Shepley will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery at Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday where the Rosary will be recited at 5 p.m. and a Vigil Scriptural Wake Service will be held at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church an hour prior to the Mass.

Marcella Elaine Hofler Howe was born June 4, 1924, at Nora Springs, the daughter of Edward and Grace (Forbes) Hofler. She graduated from the Nora Springs High School and Hamilton Business College. On Jan. 4, 1947, she was united in marriage to Robert E. Howe at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage. They farmed for many years southwest of Charles City. Marcella also worked for a time as a Medical Secretary at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital. After Robert’s death on Aug. 10, 1983, Marcella remained on the farm for a time and later moved to Nora Springs. For the past 22 years she would spend periods of time at her daughter’s home but always returned to Nora Springs which she called her “summer home”. Marcella was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, St. Theresa Circle and served for many years as an election official for Floyd County. She enjoyed watching Hawkeye sports and college basketball in general, and took an active interest in the politics of the day. Marcella appreciated sharing her life with her grandchildren and attending their sporting and scholastic events.

Living family members include three children, Jerry Howe of Iowa City, Dr. Colleen (Dr. Jose Pulido) Howe of Rochester, Minn., and Maureen “Mo” Howe of Iowa City; four grandchildren, Jason and Brian Howe, and Jose and Christine Pulido; two great grandchildren; four sisters, Patricia Little of Erie, Pa, Frances Christiansen of St. Ansgar, Aline (Bob) Sutton of Medford, Ore., and Anita Gerk of Mason City; many cherished nieces and nephews; and her Austrian family. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; an infant son; and a son Michael Howe.

Edward W. Houser, 85 formerly of 2384 Foothill Ave, Rockford and living at 300 2nd NE, Mason City died early Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2008 at Zion Lutheran Church, 805 East Main Ave. Rockford. Officiating will be the Rev. Patricia Shaw. Visitation is from 5-8 p.m. Monday at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 2nd Street SE, Mason City and again one hour prior to services at the church. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Rockford. Edward Warren was born on June 16, 1923 in Clifford, N.D. the son of Charles Edward and Rose Mae “VanCleave” Houser. He graduated from East High School in Sioux City. He then worked at the Morningside State Bank in the Savings Department, and in 1941 he moved to the Rockford area to farm until 1992. He was united in marriage to Lois Fern Lines on June 5, 1946 at Zion Lutheran Church in Rockford where he was a member. Following his farming career he worked at Days Inn as a night auditor and desk clerk. Lois and Edward raised five children and loved to travel to historical places around the U.S. They enjoyed dancing at the Surf Ballroom especially square dancing. Ed really enjoyed the outdoors and spent time fishing in Minnesota and Canada and hunting in the area. He played 500 and canasta card games and reading western novels and watching western shows. Most of all he enjoyed being with his family at holidays, reunions and attending his children and grandchildren school events and activities. At 80 years old he took the July tractor ride across Iowa on his 1949 tractor. He supported his love of farming by being a board member of the Farm Bureau in Floyd County and the Tri-County Farm Service board. He served his church by being the Sunday School Superintendant, served on the church council and being a member of the Lutheran Brotherhood. Under his pen name of “Scribblin’ Ed” he wrote poetry mostly about his faith and family. He cherished Honesty. His family always came first. He was ready willing and able to help do carpentry work on his children’s homes and build Dixie’s dome house.

Those thankful in sharing Ed's life are his five children Diane Fulk, Slater; Dixie Houser, Kilkenny, Minn.; Doris and her husband Brad Williams, Rockford; Darla and her husband Mike Huigens, New Prague, Minn.; David and his wife Laurie Houser, Mason City, eleven surviving grandchildren Diane’s children Ed, Jacob, Angela; Doris’s children Barry Marty, Lynette, and Jordan; Darla’s children Wayne and Allan; and David’s children Ashley and Adam; and eight Great Grandchildren, along with two sisters Hildreth Barnes, Galveston, Texas; and Hazel Garretson, Colorado Springs, Colo.

His parents, his wife Lois in 1990, one brother Durard Houser, one granddaughter Rebecca Fulk, his son-in-law Carl, and Lois’s parents Mr. and Mrs. Ed Lines preceded Ed in death.

Kathy Van Wert

Kathy Van Wert, 57, of Charles City, died Friday, Oct. 3, 2008. Kathy’s beautiful spirit slipped away to return to God as she slept in the early morning hours at the Old Faithful Inn, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming. She and Gary were on a get-away vacation together enjoying the beautiful fall colors of Colorado, Utah, Idaho and Wyoming.

Funeral services for Kathy Van Wert will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Charles City. Pastors Ron Hall and Bob Culbertson will officiate. Burial will be at 3:45 p.m. Thursday in the Hampton Cemetery in Hampton. Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 5-9 p.m. Wednesday. Visitation will continue an hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.

Kathy Jeanne (Baldwin) Van Wert was born July 28, 1951, at Hampton, the daughter of George E. and Helen (Mutzel) Baldwin. She graduated from the Hampton Community High School in 1969. She attended Marycrest College and graduated with honors from Marshalltown Community School of Nursing, earning the Mae McCombs Award for Maternity Nursing. She was employed as a Registered Nurse throughout her career life, at Marshalltown Area Community Hospital, as the office nurse for Dr. Richard Weidner at Wolfe Clinic in Marshalltown, and as a nurse consultant for The Bankers Life (now The Principal Financial Group) from which she retired in July of this year. She had been a member of T.T.T., P.E.O., the Case Manager Association, the United Methodist Women, and the Trinity United Methodist Church. Kathy married Gary on Aug. 8, 1971, in Hampton and had lived in Marshalltown, Des Moines, Urbandale, Cedar Rapids, Coon Rapids and Charles City. Three children were given to this union: Michelle (David Kosalka) Van Wert Kosalka, of Milwaukee, Wis., Jeffrey (stillborn), and Kim of Cedar Falls. Kathy was a wonderful and devoted wife, mom, and grandma who enjoyed being with people of all walks of life. Her smile, her perseverance, her determination, and her courage have been an inspiration to many, many people. She was determined to never give up, to never have a bad day, and to show the love of Christ to all who came along her path. Her smile and her sparkle linger on in the hearts of those she has loved.

God blessed Kathy with many loving friends and a great family.

Kathy is survived by her husband, Rev. Gary Van Wert, of Charles City; her two daughters, Shelly and Kim; her grandson, Christopher Charles Van Wert; her brother, David Baldwin of Manhattan, Kan.; her special aunt, Lillian Craighton, of Hampton; several close cousins, nieces and nephews, and countless friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her son, Jeffrey.

James K Schmidt

James K Schmidt, 70, of Charles City, passed away Thursday Oct. 2, 2008, at the Floyd County Medical Center. Per his wishes, James was cremated. The Cremation Society of Eastern-Central-Western Iowa is assisting with arrangements.

James was born on July 4, 1938, to Fred and Naomi (Scoles) Schmidt. He was educated in the Charles City school system and graduated with a degree in English from the University of Iowa. James served in the U.S. Navy for four years.

James enjoyed biking and hiking. He was a world traveler, and his journeys took him to Africa, Europe and Tibet, in addition to all 50 United States. James was a Buddhist monk for 15 years.

Survivors include six sisters: Alice King of Waukesh, Wis., Lois Hoy of Hayward, Wis., Betty (Quentin) Meyer of New Haven, Ruth Beeman of Mira Loma, Calif., Pat Cross of Charles City and Peggy (Larry) Kay of Charles City; as well as and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding James in death were his parents; brothers Paul and Carl Schmidt; and sisters Lucile Schmidt, Elsie McCague and Darlene Kapping.

Joan (Davenport) Britten, 89, of Davenport, passed away Oct. 6, 2008 at Genesis Medical Center in West Campus Davenport.

Georgianna Frances was born Feb. 19, 1947 in South Hampton, N.Y. the daughter of George Palmer and Virginia Elizabeth “Bartman” Merrill. They moved to Charles City in 1957 and she graduated from the Charles City High School with the class of 1966. She was engaged as a direct care worker for Comp Systems for 4 1/2 years. She also was in sales with Tupperware and Stamp-N-up and home products for children to adults. As her daughter grew up she spent three years as a Girl Scout Leader. She was faithful to her church and was a member of the Rosary Society and St. Anthony’s Circle. She was also a member of the VFW auxiliary and the Charles City and Mason City CB clubs. She crocheted bed dolls, and collected many items including religious items, angels and teddy bears. On April 1, 1967 she was united in marriage to David LeRoy Lutz at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. She was very saddened when a year later it was destroyed by the tornadoes. In her early years she loved to ride horses and kept one at her father-in-laws place. She and David went roller-skating, attending dances, and going for drives. Georgie was very easygoing in her attitude about life and her disability.

Surviving Georgianna is her husband David of 41 years, her daughter Theresa and her husband Douglas Deetz and their four children Rick, Tiffany, Emily, and Caleb Deetz.

Her parents and her sister Beverly Alderman preceded her in death.

Clair F. Roethler, 85, of Charles City, died Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008 at Methodist Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

Clair Florian Roethler was born Sept. 29, 1923 at West Bend, the son of Herbert and Clara (Fischbach) Roethler. He graduated from high school in Chickasaw County. On Jan. 5, 1953, he was united in marriage to Norma Hillsman at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Alta Vista. Clair and his wife farmed in the Floyd County area for over 60 years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and Immaculate Conception Church in Charles City. His interests included woodworking, puzzles, helping out with K.C. events, having morning coffee with the guys at the K.C. Hall and spending time with his grandchildren.

Living family members include his son, Chris Roethler of Jewell; two grandchildren, Cassondra Roethler of Waverly and Levi Roethler of Waverly; brother, Herbert Roethler of Ionia; a brother-in-law, Ronald (Judy) Hillsman of Waterloo; two sister-in-laws, Janice Ableitner of Pine Island, Minn. and Veronica Roethler of Alta Vista and many beloved nieces, nephews and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and brother, Francis Roethler.

On Feb. 19, 1923, Betty was born to Wade M. and Mabel "Walters" Doolittle in Gary, Ind. She graduated from Lowell High School in Lowell, Ind. with the class of 1940. She spent most of her childhood in Indiana where she was employed in a doctor's office, and then a munitions plant during the early part of the war before joining the Navy as a Wave. After her honorable discharge she was joined in holy matrimony to Joseph A. Ottengheime on Aug. 8, 1944 at the Glenview Naval Air Station in Ill. Joe learned to be a baker in the service and he and Betty soon opened bakeries in several communities, beginning in Brook, Ind. As their family grew, they moved to Crown Point, Ind., and then back to Lowell. They later moved to Arlington Heights, Ill., followed by a move to Iowa, where Betty continued to work alongside her husband while he managed the bakery at Trowbridges in Charles City. Later they moved to Phoenix, Ariz., and then to Redondo Beach, Calif. She worked as the office manager in Dr. John Connor's family practice in Redondo Beach from 1967 until she retired to Nevada City, Calif. Betty loved to read, especially biographies, and embraced herself in hard work at whatever job or volunteer position she held. She took great pride in having a comfortable, well-decorated and clean home. In her later years Betty enjoyed membership in a hiking club in Northern Calif., and throughout her life had an appreciation for and abilities in the arts, as evidenced by the many beautiful oil paintings she created for herself and others to enjoy.

Those thankful to share Betty's life include her four children: Mary, and her husband Larry Tjaden, Charles City; Jo Ellen and her husband Victor Corral, Newbury Park, Calif.; Jon Ottengheime, Seattle, Wash.; Paul and his wife Terri Ottengheime, Altadena, Calif.; seven grandchildren: Shannon (Frank) Jimenez, Jennifer (Jon) Read, Jeff (Robyn) Edgbert, Matthew Corral, Jessica, Katie, and Shelby Ottengheime; six great-grandchildren: Abigail, Timothy, Emily, and William Read, Aidan and Sophia Jimenez; two sisters: Barbara (Jay) Clifford, Mountain View, Ark.; Joyce (Carroll) Ritchie, Bartlesville, Okla.; two brothers: Jay Doolittle, Knoxville, Tenn.; John (Christine) Doolittle, Tallahoma, Tenn. and several nieces and nephews.

Her parents, one sister Jean Granzow, and special friend Rich Nickel preceded her in death.

Verle Laverne Rademacher

HELENA, Mont. — Verle Laverne Rademacher, 71, of Helena, Mont., and formerly of Floyd, passed away Aug. 12, 2008, at the Cooney Convalescent Home from Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases.

Funeral services were held Aug. 17 at the Yoked Parish Church in White Sulphur Springs, Mont. Interment was at Mayn Cemetery.

A?longtime newspaper man, avid hunter and outdoorsman, Verle was a member of the Floyd High?School graduating class of 1954 and married his high school sweetheart, Patricia Miner.

John Arthur Jacobs

John Arthur Jacobs, 57, of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Charles City, passed away Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008, at University Hospitals in Iowa City after a sudden illness.

Surviving John are his son, Kristopher; granddaughter Kailee Ann Jacobs; and ex-wife, Beth Hiner, Kristopher’s mother, all of Springville; father, Joe Jacobs of Charles City; two brothers, Dale (Deb) Kapping, Garner, and Mike (Jan Wilson) Jacobs of Charles City; three sisters, Arlene (Harry) Hayner of Klemme, and Ruth (Gene) Diercks and Penny (Mark) Adams, both of Charles City; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

John was preceded in death by his mother, Fern (Kapping) Jacobs; grandparents, Frank and Francis (Kruse) Jacobs and Fred and Dorothy Kapping; and several aunts and uncles.

John’s wishes were to be cremated. Services will be at a later date.

Marjorie (Shindelar) Walker

Marjorie (Shindelar) Walker died Oct. 10, 2008, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City, Iowa at the age of 84 years.

Marjorie was born Sept. 21, 1924, the daughter of Monroe and Amelia (Frey) Leuenberger who farmed near Ft. Atkinson. She attended school in Ft. Atkinson. On Sept. 4, 1945, she married Anselm Shindelar. Eleven children were born to this union: Bill(Donna), Janet, Tom(Ruthie), Charlotte (deceased), Diane (deceased), Aleta(Paul), Marcia, Monroe(Julie), Robert(Holly), Virginia(Bill), and Richard(Kristin). They farmed near Spillville until moving to Roseville in 1955.

Following Anselm’s death, Marjorie married Orrin “Dean” Walker on Dec. 18, 1976, gaining four step-children: Pamella , Janice, Donald, and Thomas. Marge and Dean moved to Rockford for a short while and then settled at Roseville until their home was destroyed by the flood of ‘99.Afterward they relocated to Rockford.

Funeral services and burial were held for Marjorie at St. Mary’s Church in Roseville on Monday, Oct. 13, 2008.

Donald E. Barth

GREENE?— Donald E. Barth, 67, of Greene, died Friday, Oct. 10, 2008, at the Liebe Care Center in Greene.

Funeral services for Donald Barth will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor Gary Hatcher of the St. Peter Lutheran Church will officiate. Burial will be held in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City.

The family will greet the public beginning at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Donald Eugene Barth was born Aug. 8, 1941, at Charles City, the son of Claude and Lillian (Hildebrand) Barth. He grew up on a farm outside of Marble Rock and graduated valedictorian from Rockford Senior High in 1959. From there, he went on and graduated from Iowa State University with the highest graduating grade point of his college. He received his Masters from Harvard and Ph.D. from Yale University in 1969. Donald’s early career was centered on chemistry but his interests soon changed to computers and computer programming. He worked in several positions including Assistant Director of Computer Services at Harvard and later Director of Computer Services at Yale. He taught computer workshops at both Harvard and Yale. His outside interests included hiking, photography, attending science fiction conventions and collecting Roy Roger’s Memorabilia.

Living family members include his brother, Roger (Victoria) Barth of Chaska, Minn.; two nephews, Trevor Barth and Tyler (Lori) Barth; four great nieces, Taylor, Hailey, Hannah and Mackenna.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

LEROY, Minn. — Memorial services for Mae Monsen will be held 11:30 Wednesday Oct. 15, 2008 at the Little Cedar Lutheran Church in Adams with the Rev Shari Mason officiating. Burial will take place at the Six Mile Grove Cemetery in rural Lyle, Minn.

Mrs. Monsen, age 86, of LeRoy, Minn., died Friday evening at Sunrise Cottages in Rochester, Minn.

Mae Margaret Monsen was born September 18, 1922 in Osage, Iowa, to Earnest Meister and Lilly Troge Meister. She attended and graduated from Adams High School in 1940 and was united in marriage to Joseph K. Monsen on December 12, 1942 at the St Olaf Lutheran Parsonage in Austin, Minn. In 1946, the couple moved to a farm near Taopi, Minn.

Mrs. Monsen was a farm homemaker and before that she worked at Hormel in Austin and cleaned houses. After their retirement she worked at the Tree House. Mae loved playing cards, games, crocheting, baking, cooking, dancing, bowling, and gardening. She liked what she did, everyday. Mae was a founding member of the Lodi Farmeretts, a member of Little Cedar Lutheran Church and was very active in its circles, fund raisers, and Lutheran Brotherhood.

She is survived by her three daughters: Gloria Heathman Aanonson (Leland) of Rose Creek, Minn., Carol Agee of Rochester, Minn., and Lori (Kirk) Baumbach of Byron, Minn.; eight grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; 1 step great-granddaughter; five brothers: Melvin Meister of Bella Vista, Ark., Luther (Ruby) Meister of Austin, Minn., Vern Meister of Rochester, Roy (Gladys) Meister of Bloomington and Dean Meister of LeCenter; and one sister, Daisy (Curtis) Larson of Austin, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband on June 14, 1999, a granddaughter, one son-in-law, two sisters, and four brothers.

Family and friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2008, at the Hindt Funeral Home in LeRoy and one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.

James R. Eggena

James R. Eggena, 61, of Charles City, died Thursday, Oct. 9, 2008, at his home in Charles City.

Funeral services for James Eggena will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor Dennis Niezwaag of the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church will officiate. Inurnment will be at a later date. Military honors will be conducted by the American Legion Tack Barnett Post 268 of Greene.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday. Visitation will continue an hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Wednesday.

James Richard Eggena was born July 22, 1947, at Charles City, the son of John and Gertrude (Hayungs) Eggena. He graduated from the Greene High School. James served 25 years in the United States Marines. His interests included hunting, fishing, gardening, helping others and spending time with his daughter.

Living family members include his daughter, Grace Amanda Eggena Chambers of Waterloo; his mother, Gertrude Eggena of Charles City; three sisters, Ellen Paulus of Littleton, Colo., Liz Brooks of Charles City and Linda (Mike) Carroll of Marion; brother, Joe (Julie) Eggena of Greene; special friend, Tammy Chambers of Waterloo; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father; and sister, Judy Eliasen.

Henry I. Montgomery

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. — Henry I. Montgomery, 83, of Bloomington, Minn., and formerly of Charles City, passed away Sept. 28, 2008.

Funeral services were held Oct. 2 in Edina, Minn., with interment at Phelps Cemetery in his native Decorah, Iowa.

Henry received the Bronze Star for valor while in the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II and from 1945-47 was a field agent for the OSS/CIA in central Europe. He went on to later play an instrumental role in launching the profession of financial planning in the 1970s and founded Planners Financial Services, Inc. of Minneapolis, of which he was president from 1972-2005.

SHELBYVILLE, Ill. — Robert C. Sylvester, 90, of Shelbyville, died at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008, in Shelbyville Manor.

Memorial graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 7, in Glenwood Cemetery with Rev. Jeff Grote officiating and Masonic rites by Jackson Masonic Lodge No. 53. Arrangements are by Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville. Memorials may be given to the First Presbyterian Church of Shelbyville.

Mr. Sylvester was born on July 10, 1918, in Charles City, the son of August Carl and Alta Mae Thompson Sylvester. He was a graduate of Charles City High School in the Class of 1936 and the American Institute of Business in Des Moines. Bob worked for the Oliver Corporation in Shelbyville for over 29 years and then was an agent for the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund until his retirement. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Shelbyville. He was a lifetime member of Jackson Masonic Lodge No. 53 of Shelbyville and an emeritus member of the Saxa Rubra Conclave of Knights of the Red Cross of Constantine in Champaign, Ill. He married Marjorie Marie Strohl on July 23, 1950 in Marion, Ill.

Surviving are his wife, Marge; son, Phillip Keith Sylvester of Marion, Ill.; daughters, Kathy Lantz and husband Scott and Barb Holley and husband Jim all of Shelbyville; brother, Keith Sylvester and wife Marietta of Charles City; brother-in-law, Phillip Strohl and wife Marjorie of Shelbyville; grandchildren Jeffrey C. McClain and wife Michele of Fredericksburg, Va., Sarah E. Dicks of Raleigh, N.C., Megan M. Lantz of Chicago, Ill., Laurie Groves and husband Justin of Benton, Ill., Suzanne Clark and husband Todd of Marion, Ill., Matthew D. Holley of Indianapolis, Ind., and Mark A. Holley of Champaign, Ill.; and great grandchildren Jacob McClain, Andrew Clark, Ava and Ella Groves and Elijah and Adam Millard.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Patti Elizabeth and great grandson, Joshua Keith Clark.
