Funeral services for Velma Murphy will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City, with Pastor William Kelly officiating. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens rural Charles City.

Velma Buella Fisher Murphy was born March 11, 1920, at Charles City, the daughter of Emil and Fannie (Lines) Fisher. She graduated from the Charles City High School in 1938. On June 3, 1939, she was united in marriage to Robert Murphy. They lived in the Floyd County area until Robert entered the United States Army in April of 1943. When he returned they lived the rest of their lives in Charles City. Robert died on Jan. 29, 1999. Velma’s interests included shopping and collecting Hummels.
Living family members include a brother, Amil (Dorothy) Fisher of Charles City; a nephew, Gary (Ann) Fisher of Charles City; two nieces, Susan Fisher of Burnsville, Minn. and Donna (Harold) Leek of Dodgeville, Wisc.; several great nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Marrian Linde of Charles City.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and a brother, Donald Fisher.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 2, at Fullerton Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City. Raymond Dever was born on Nov. 8, 1931, in Independence, the son to George A. and Velma A. (McDonald) Hovey. At age 3, the family moved to Charles City and Ray received his education through the Charles City educational system. He was inducted into the Army and entered service at the Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland serving during the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1954 form Camp Carson, in Colorado. For 38-1/2 years, he was employed at White Farm, retiring in November 1993. On June 6, 1955, he was united in marriage to Helen M. Frascht at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greene. To this union was born three daughters. Ray was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and a lifetime member of the VFW. He enjoyed his flower and vegetable gardens and decorating his yard and home for Christmas. His greatest enjoyment was spending time with his grandchildren and great grandson. For several winters he traveled to Arizona.
Surviving Ray are his three daughters: Debra (David) Raper of Oregon, Vicky (David) Bast of Nashua and Patsy (Michael) Barragy, Clear Lake; seven grandchildren: Misty Hanke, Shane Hultgren, Jessica Raper, Brian Bast, Amanda Hanson and Christopher and Taylor Barragy; and two great-grandchildren: Alex Hanson and Alexis Hultgren; one sister Ruth (Dale) Chestek, Charles City; one brother George (LuJane) Hovey, Dickinson, Texas; and two sister-in-laws Katherine and Betty Hovey, both of Charles City.
His wife Helen in 1993, his parents, one sister Lois Hovey and two brothers, Glen and Kenneth Hovey, preceded him in death.

Carl ‘Judd’ Krueger Jr.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 4, at Trinity Lutheran Church, New Hampton with Pastor Kevin Frey officiating. Paul Krueger will be the reader and the crossbearer will be Eddie Rausch. The pall will be placed in the casket by his family.
Interment with military honors will be in the Grace Lutheran Cemetery, rural Tripoli.

Carl “Judd” Krueger Jr. was born Feb. 18, 1930, in rural Bremer County, the son of Carl William and Elsa Louise (Warnke) Krueger Sr. He attended school in Frederika until the 10th grade and was then a 1947 graduate of the New Hampton High School. In 1951, he was inducted into the United States Army. He served during the Korean Conflict until being honorably discharged as a corporal in 1953. Upon returning home, Judd engaged in farming with his brother and his wife, Robert and Norma Krueger. They farmed west of New Hampton and Judd became a faithful father to nine children through his brother’s family. He took them to their activities, took them fishing and worked the farm side-by-side with them. He moved into town with Bob and Norma in 1992 and fully retired in 1994.
Survivors include one brother, Herb Krueger of Tripoli; nine nieces and nephews who he raised as if his own: Bob (Robin) Krueger of Charles City, Paul (Pat) Krueger of New Hampton, Dr. Raymond (Connie) Krueger of Spring Valley, Minn., Gordon (Donita) Krueger of Cedar Falls, Linda (Brian) Rieckenberg of Poulsbo, Wash., Karen (Andy) Sinnwell of Forest City, Becky (Dick) Rausch of Ionia, Nancy (William) Gardner of St. Francis, Minn., Beth (Jamy) Ball of Mt. Pleasant, and his best friend, Tony (Lucy) Schissel of New Hampton.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Robert Krueger and a brother in infancy.

Mary later attended public school in Bayfield, Wis. and Wisconsin State School in Sparta, Wis. Later in Mary’s life, she moved to Rockford, where she lived and enjoyed life with her significant other, William Graham. Mary enjoyed doing different types of crafts, shopping and going fishing with William.
Living family members include her father, Morris Virnig of Owensboro, Ky.; a daughter, Mariah Ohlendorf; son, William Knudsen; a granddaughter, Alexiuz Ohlendorf; her brother, Richard Virnig of Spring, Texas; her significant other, William Graham of Rockford; his children, Shawn, Zachery and Kristina Graham; his mother, Connie Graham of Rockford; his grandmother, Minnie Graham of Charles City; his brother, Robert (Cindy) Graham of Rockford and their children, Lacey and Kaleb Graham; a special friend, Mona Kellogg of Rockford, and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Donald was born in Rockford on May 31, 1914, the son of Hal and Nellie (Blake) Jones. He lived his entire life in Rockford. He was united in marriage to Virginia Hansen on Jan. 12, 1939, in Nashua. He raised cattle on his farm, drove a truck for Rockford Shipping Association, and was a custodian at the Rudd-Rockford-Marble Rock High School. Donald was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Royal Neighbors. He enjoyed working with his cattle, playing cards and spending time with family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Virginia of Rockford; children, Conni (Larry) Shanks of Spring Branch, Texas and Wendy (Randy) Demaray of Nora Springs; four grandchildren; four great grandchildren; sisters-in-law Marjorie Hansen, Roberta Hansen and Georgia Johnson; and brother-in-law Donald Johnson.

William ‘Sam’ Farner
Survivors include his wife Dee, four brothers Steve (LaVonne) of Ames, Cy (Sandra) of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Tom (Jeanne) of Carroll; and two sisters, Sally (John) Norgaard and Sara (Dennis) Anderson all of Carroll. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a nephew, Christopher John Farner.
Sam was born on Dec. 17, 1937 in Carroll, the son of William and Lois Hulsebus Farner. As a teen he started working at Farner-Bocken and graduated from the Carroll High School in 1957. He attended Buena Vista University in Storm Lake. He started his career as a sales rep. for the General Cigar Co. and later went into partnership in the Farner-Hewett Co. in Charles City. He married Delores “Dee” Jacobs Reckner on Dec. 28, 1967 in Las Vegas, Nev. In 1981 he became president of the Farner-Bocken Cedar Rapids Company, retiring in 2007. Sam continued to serve on the Farner-Bocken Board of Directors.
Sam was a member of and Past President of I.A.T.D., an honorary member of the National I Club Board, Elmcrest Country Club, and the Wildcat Run Country Club in Estero, Fla.
Memorial donations may be given to the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, the Cedar Valley Humane Society or to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Leo James Tynan was born Dec. 19, 1926, at Charles City, the son of James and Lettie (Herman) Tynan. He received his education at Charles City. Leo proudly served with the United States Army in Europe during World War II. On Dec. 1, 1947, he was united in marriage to Barbara Nelson at Austin, Minn. Leo worked at Albaugh Pontiac, Harrison Ford, and from 1962 to 1994 for Allied Construction. He was a member of Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Moose Lodge, American Legion, and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Leo enjoyed working on cars and traveling to see his family.
Living family members include a son, Richard “Dick” Tynan of Rockford; two grandchildren, Richard Tynan, Jr. and Racheal Tynan; two great grandchildren, Mercedes and Lexus Tynan; two brothers, Darrell Dean Tynan and Jack (Judy) Tynan both of Charles City; three sisters, Mary Sprague of Charles City, Beverly (Larry) Luck of Plainfield and Juanita (Wayne) Miller of Boulder Colo.; and a special nephew, Dennis “Denny” (Virginia) Tynan of Charles City.

Alma A. Angell
Merlyn died in 1989. Alma taught for several years in area country schools. She was the sixth person nationally to sign up as an Amway distributor. Alma was a member of the United Church of Christ in Osage. She greatly enjoyed her family.
Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 13, 2008, at the United Church of Christ in Osage, with Pastor Ruth Moerdyk officiating. Inurnment will be at the Osage Cemetery. There will be a time for lunch and fellowship following the service at the church.
Alma is survived by three sons, Mervel “Duke” (Neva) Angell of Osage, Glen (Helen) Angell of New Hampton, Keith (Carmen) Angell of Charles City; 16 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and 20 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Merlyn W. Angell; a granddaughter, Laurie Angell; and a great-grandson, Stephen Travis Folkers.

Walter William Gabelmann
Walter was born on the family farm in Dayton Township in Butler County near Greene on June 27, 1922 to Christian William and Christina Maria (Kehret) Gabelmann. He attended country schools. On Feb. 20, 1946, Walt was united in marriage to Helene Elizabeth Meinzer at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Charles City. From 1947 to 1959, Walt and Helene made their home in Powersville. In 1959 they moved to Riceville.
Walt was a livestock dealer, served the city of Riceville as mayor for 20 years, was a great story teller and friend to many.
Survivors include: his daughter, Ruthann Brekke and her husband Frank of Rochester, Minn.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren: Jason Gansen and his wife Shauna , and their daughter Kate, of Brandon S.D., Jeremy Gansen and his wife Angie and their son Caiden, of Cannon Falls, Minn., Jeff Gansen and his wife Heather and their daughter Lydia of Mason City, Jessica Brekke and her son Hunter of Rochester, Minn., and Eric Brekke of Seeley, Calif.; one sister: Hulda Everding of Tripola; two sister-in-laws: Kathryn Gabelmann of Clear Lake, and Mert Cummings of Keokuk; and many nieces and nephews.
Walt was preceded by his wife Helene on June 2, 1995, his parents, two brothers, and three sisters.

Dale John Stauffer was born Nov. 14, 1920, in Butler County, the son of John and Gesina (Menken) Stauffer. He graduated from the Allison High School in 1937. On June 22, 1941, he was united in marriage to Alice Litterer. They farmed all their lives in the Allison, Greene, Nashua and Charles City areas. Alice died on Jan. 16, 1997. Dale had a dehorning business for many years that served farmers in the surrounding area. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church where he had served on several of the church boards, Farm Bureau, Floyd County Mutual, and Floyd County Soil Conservation. Dale had also served as a 4-H leader. He always enjoyed the family fishing trips to Canada. Dale always took a special interest in children of all ages and will be remembered for helping them in whatever way he could.
Living family members include two daughters, Lin (Doug) Sinclair and Vicky (Larry) Sonne both of Charles City; 11 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Lois Stauffer of Allison; a brother, Lyle (Gladys) Stauffer of Greene; a brother-in-law, Ken (Darlene) Litterer of Maquoketa; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; a son, Roger Stauffer; and a sister, Margaret Stauffer.

Richard S. Thomsen
He was a graduate of the University of Iowa and held B.A. and M.A. degrees with an ABD in Journalism. He was an Air Force pilot at the end of the Korean War; a print and radio journalist and television anchorman; college professor; artistic director of the Boarshead Michigan Public Theater of Lansing, Mich., (where he was the Michiganian of the Year in the Arts in 1981.). He was a playwright, an actor and director in New York City for the last 24 years. He performed on Broadway, off-Broadway and in theaters across the country, on national tours and in numerous films and TV shows out of New York. He last worked on stage this January through March at The Denver Center Theater as Bardolf in The Merry Wives of Windsor, directed by his friend David Ivers and will be seen soon in a yet to be released episode entitled "Thaw" of FX's Rescue Me.

Walter William Gabelmann
Walter was born on the family farm in Dayton Township in Butler County near Greene on June 27, 1922 to Christian William and Christina Maria (Kehret) Gabelmann. He attended country schools. On Feb. 20, 1946, Walt was united in marriage to Helene Elizabeth Meinzer at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Charles City. From 1947 to 1959, Walt and Helene made their home in Powersville. In 1959 they moved to Riceville.
Walt was a livestock dealer, served the city of Riceville as mayor for 20 years, was a great story teller and friend to many.
Survivors include: his daughter, Ruthann Brekke and her husband Frank of Rochester, Minn.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren: Jason Gansen and his wife Shauna , and their daughter Kate, of Brandon S.D., Jeremy Gansen and his wife Angie and their son Caiden, of Cannon Falls, Minn., Jeff Gansen and his wife Heather and their daughter Lydia of Mason City, Jessica Brekke and her son Hunter of Rochester, Minn., and Eric Brekke of Seeley, Calif.; one sister: Hulda Everding of Tripola; two sister-in-laws: Kathryn Gabelmann of Clear Lake, and Mert Cummings of Keokuk; and many nieces and nephews.

She was a member of the Osage V.F.W. Auxiliary. Vera embraced life fully, enjoying all types of outdoor activities, including farming, raising cattle, hunting, fishing, and trapping. She also enjoyed gardening.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13, 2008, at the First Congregational Church, U.C.C. in Orchard, with Pastor Jan Tjaden officiating. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery.

Alma A. Angell
Merlyn died in 1989. Alma taught for several years in area country schools. She was the sixth person nationally to sign up as an Amway distributor. Alma was a member of the United Church of Christ in Osage. She greatly enjoyed her family.
Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 13, 2008, at the United Church of Christ in Osage, with Pastor Ruth Moerdyk officiating. Inurnment will be at the Osage Cemetery. There will be a time for lunch and fellowship following the service at the church.
Alma is survived by three sons, Mervel “Duke” (Neva) Angell of Osage, Glen (Helen) Angell of New Hampton, Keith (Carmen) Angell of Charles City; 16 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and 20 great-great-grandchildren.

Lyle was born on May 22, 1922, in Titonka, the son of Guy and Emma (Wirtjes) Stott. He graduated from Garner High School in 1940. He served in the United States Army during World War II, receiving an honorable discharge in 1946. Lyle began working for Northwestern Bell Telephone in 1947 as a technician and trouble-shooter. He moved to Osage in 1957 where he met Edna Lincke, and the couple was united in marriage on April 11, 1959. The couple lived in Keokuk briefly before settling in Charles City in 1960. He retired from the telephone company in 1984 after 37 years of service. Lyle spent his retirement years dealing in antiques, cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes and spending time with his family.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Edna; daughters, Tracy (Orville) Hillis of Charles City and Patrice (Rod) Cagley of Ankeny; grandchildren, Audrey McHenry, Nycole Armon, Zack Cagley and Darby Cagley; great grandchildren, Imigin and Xander McHenry; brother, Lloyd (Doris) Stott of Camarillo, Calif.; and sister, Leona Straw of Clear Lake.

Dale John Stauffer was born Nov. 14, 1920, in Butler County, the son of John and Gesina (Menken) Stauffer. He graduated from the Allison High School in 1937. On June 22, 1941, he was united in marriage to Alice Litterer. They farmed all their lives in the Allison, Greene, Nashua and Charles City areas. Alice died on Jan. 16, 1997. Dale had a dehorning business for many years that served farmers in the surrounding area. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church where he had served on several of the church boards, Farm Bureau, Floyd County Mutual, and Floyd County Soil Conservation. Dale had also served as a 4-H leader. He always enjoyed the family fishing trips to Canada. Dale always took a special interest in children of all ages and will be remembered for helping them in whatever way he could.
Living family members include two daughters, Lin (Doug) Sinclair and Vicky (Larry) Sonne both of Charles City; 11 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Lois Stauffer of Allison; a brother, Lyle (Gladys) Stauffer of Greene; a brother-in-law, Ken (Darlene) Litterer of Maquoketa; and many nieces and nephews.

Richard S. Thomsen
He was a graduate of the University of Iowa and held B.A. and M.A. degrees with an ABD in Journalism. He was an Air Force pilot at the end of the Korean War; a print and radio journalist and television anchorman; college professor; artistic director of the Boarshead Michigan Public Theater of Lansing, Mich., (where he was the Michiganian of the Year in the Arts in 1981.). He was a playwright, an actor and director in New York City for the last 24 years. He performed on Broadway, off-Broadway and in theaters across the country, on national tours and in numerous films and TV shows out of New York. He last worked on stage this January through March at The Denver Center Theater as Bardolf in The Merry Wives of Windsor, directed by his friend David Ivers and will be seen soon in a yet to be released episode entitled "Thaw" of FX's Rescue Me.

Ronald Harvey Norby

Ronald H. Norby was born on the family farm on Jan. 18, 1942, in Rudd, the son Robert and Doris (Kuhlemeier) Norby. Ron was raised on the farm and lived in the Rudd area all his life. He graduated from Rockford High School in 1960 and from Iowa State University in 1965, with an animal science degree. Ron enlisted into the National Guard on November of 1965 and was honorably discharged on Oct. 31, 1971.
Ron was united in marriage to Mary Escobedo, on August 24, 1970; to this union three children were born. He was self employed owning his own trucking business. Ron also worked at Kum & Go and the 218 Floyd Express as a cashier.
Ron enjoyed sports, fishing, tractors, gardening, woodworking, and loved animals especially his pets! He also liked to spend time with his honorary grandchildren, Ben and Sarah Parcher. He was a member of the Rudd Methodist Church, American Legion, and Lions Club.
Ron is survived by his wife Mary Norby, Rudd, children, Johnnie Norby, Los Angeles, Calif., Michael Norby, San Diego, Calif., and Kimberley Norby, of San Diego, Calif.; honorary grandchildren Ben and Sarah Parcher; siblings, Barbara (Toby) Enema, Des Moines, Carolyn (Tom) Smith, Woden, William (Vickie) Norby, Rudd; along with several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was united in marriage to Charles Schwab on Aug. 29, 1986. Betty retired from White Farm as a manager in 1993 after 28 years of service. She enjoyed her family and was a loving mother and grandmother.

Robert ‘Whitey’ Marvin
Whitey is survived by his wife, Charlotte Marvin of Humboldt; daughters, Margaret (Don) Hollingshead of Sioux City and Wendy (Tom) Froh of Dakota City; sons, Danny (Jamie) Marvin of Dakota City, Terry (Robin) Marvin of St. Paul Park, Minn., and Kris (Susan) Marvin of Humboldt; 11 grandchildren; 11 Great Grandchildren; brothers, Leslie Marvin of Nebraska and Keith (Anna Mae) Marvin of Charles City; and sisters, Dorothy Simpson of St. Ansgar, and Merle Crooks and Phyllis Pitz both of Charles City. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Lester and Dale; and sisters, Rosie Crooks and Lucille Crooks.
Robert Lee Marvin, the son of Walter and Pearl (Emery) Marvin was born March 8, 1927 on a farm near Riceville. He attended country school near Orchard and following his education, worked for farmers in the area and in Minnesota. At he age of 18, Robert enlisted into the United States Army in early 1945. He received his basic training at Fort Wolters in Texas and served in Germany, North Africa, and Iran. He returned home for a time before reenlisting and was sent to Alaska where he served as a military policeman. Following his discharge, he went to work for the Oliver Corporation at Charles City. He was united in marriage to Charlotte Reasland on Sept. 25, 1949 and the couple made their home in Fort Dodge where Whitey was employed by the U.S. Gypsum Co. In 1955, he began working as an automotive body repairman and in 1974, he established Whitey's Body Shop in Humboldt, which he owned an operated until his retirement in 2002.
Mr. Marvin was a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ. He was also a member of the NRA, the Humboldt Rifle and Pistol Club, and the OCRA fishing club. He enjoyed part time bodywork in his garage, gardening, woodworking, and caning chairs.

Paul Michael Szalkowski was born Sept. 4, 1946, in Chicago, Ill., the son of Sigmund and Margaret (Whalen) Szalkowski. He attended school in Downer’s Grove, Ill., and graduated from Downer’s Grove High School in 1964. Paul graduated from Upper Iowa University in 1969 with a B.A. in Education. He later attained his Master’s Degree from Northeast Missouri State.
Paul was united in marriage to Sandra Bodde on Nov. 28, 1968, at the United Methodist Church in Hampton. He served two years in the U.S. Army. He was a staff sergeant with the combat engineers in Viet Nam.
He started his teaching career at the Nashua Elementary School on Dec. 13, 1971, and retired from Nashua-Plainfield Elementary School in 2002. It was truly a labor of love for Paul for even after retiring he substitute taught so he could stay close to his profession and the kids.
Paul was an active member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Nashua, St Michael’s Parrish Council, ISEA, NEA, American Legion, VFW and the Mercy Hospital Board. He was a faithful Bulldog and Husky supporter and will be remember for his many years of announcing the home football games. He remained an avid Cubs, White Sox and Bears fan, not completely giving up his Illinois’ roots.
He is survived by his wife, Sandra; two sons, Jeff (Tammy) of Peosta and Shawn (Karen) of Ft. Madison; his twin granddaughters, Samantha and Cassandra; two brothers, Bill (Diana) Szalkowski of O’Fallon, Ill., and Glenn (Reg) Szalkowski of Antioch, Ill.; two sisters, Marianne (Terry) Perkins of Seattle, Wash., and Adair Sapinski of San Francisco, Calif.; his mother-in-law, Esther Bodde of Nashua.

Living family members include two daughters, Lin (Doug) Sinclair and Vicky (Larry) Sonne both of Charles City; 11 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Lois Stauffer of Allison; a brother, Lyle (Gladys) Stauffer of Greene; a brother-in-law, Ken (Darlene) Litterer of Maquoketa; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; a son, Roger Stauffer; and a sister, Margaret Stauffer.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the family for Trinity United Methodist Church or the 4-H program.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2008, at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua (641) 435-4134.
Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery at Nashua.
