Greene - Funeral services
for Ellene Marie Landers, 78, of 17927 150th Street, Greene,
will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 3, 2004, at St. Peter
Lutheran Church, Greene, with Pastor Gary Hatcher officiating.
Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene.
Visitation will be 5:00 to 8:00 p.m.Friday, at Reid's Funeral
Chapel in Greene and will continue at church on Saturday one
hour before services.
Ellene Marie Minnie
Schmidt was born July 3, 1925 in rural Coldwater Township,
Butler County, a daughter of Henry P. and Martha (Meyer)
Schmidt, and died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003, at the Liebe Care
Center in Greene.
She was baptized on July 24, 1925, at St. John's Ev. Lutheran
Church at Vilmar, and received her education at Coldwater No. 5
County School. As a young lady she worked for the Greene Produce
Company and also a sale representative for Fuller Brush.
On October 8, 1949, she was united in marriage to Wilbur H.
Landers at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They lived in
Wisconsin several years before returning to Greene in 1952. They
moved to their present farm in 1955.
Ellene had many interests and hobbies, including sewing,
quilting, crocheting, playing cards, cooking and gardening. She
also enjoyed reading and doing crossword puzzles. Her greatest
love was her family and friends, and spending those special
times with them including the birthday parties, Sunday family
gatherings and reunions.
She was confirmed a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church on April
6, 1952. She was a member of WELCA, Greene Woman's Club, and the
High School Music Parents Assn. She served as president of
several of these organizations.
She is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, Wilbur, of
Greene, her children: William (Sheila) Landers of Ely, Deborah
(James) Story of Batavia, Ill., Gregory (Donita) Landers of New
Hampton, Dawn (Roger) Van Etten of Oswego, Ill.; six grandsons:
Troy (Sarah) Landers, Jamie (Yuliana) Landers, Even Story,
Trevor Landers, Karch Landers and Judd landers; two
great-grandchildren: Christopher and Elaine Landers; three
brothers: Harry (Eloise) Schmidt, Mervin (Ruth) Schmidt, Robert
(Karen) Schmidt, all of Greene; two sisters: Lois Nuss of
Janesville, Thelma (Howard) Allison of Des Moines and several
nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents.

Lawrence J. Tegtmeier, 66,
of Charles City, died Wednesday, December 31, 2003, at Mercy
Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 3,
2003, at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Burial will
take place at Clavary Cemetery, Charles City. Visitation will be
from 4-8 p.m. today, Jan. 2, at the funeral home.
Lawrence J. Tegtmeier
was born August 30, 1937, on his mother's birthday in North
Washington, Iowa, the son of Ewald and Mary (Biretz) Tegtmeier.
Lawrence attended school at Riverton School #2 near Nashua, and
their family moved to Charles City where Lawrence graduated from
Immaculate Conception Catholic High School in 1956.
On June 14, 1958, he was united in marriage to Joyce Wegner, and
to this union five children were born. Lawrence later met Sharon
LaRue who shared many years of his life together. Lawrence
worked at Rath's Packing in Waterloo, Becker Roofing in Charles
City, and for White Farms in Charles City until the plant
closing in 1993. He then went to work for the Charles City Park
and Rec. Department until the time of his death. Lawrence
enjoyed Rendezvous, traveling, riding his motorcycle,
leatherwork, and knife forging, but his family was always most
important.
Lawrence is survived by his children: Denise Faber and her
husband Alan of Woden, Iowa, Deanne Knapp and her husband Chuck,
of Charles City, Darrin Tegtmeier and his wife Debby of Mollalla,
Ore., Rachelle Busch and her husband Steve of Trenton, Mo., and
Trevor Tegtmeier and his wife Kristi of Jacksonville, NC.; 10
grandchildren, a brother Leonard Tegtmeier and his wife Bonnie
of Charles City, and a special friend Sharon LaRue of Mason
City, as well as many other relatives and friends.
Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Donald
Tegtmeier, and a sister-in-law Darlene Tegtmeier.
Memorials may go to the Red Cross or to the American Diabetes
Association.
Florence Griffin, 98,
formerly of 410 S. Iowa St., Charles City, died early Thursday
morning (January 1, 2004) at the Salsbury Baptist Home, Charles
City.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday (January
5, 2004) at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 106 Chapel
Lane, Charles City, with Rev. Carl Ries officiating. Interment

BLAIRSVILLE, Ga. - Mrs. Lois
R. Reazak, age 98, of Blairsville, Ga., died Monday, December
29, 2003, in Union County Nursing Home.
Mrs. Reazak was born April 25, 1905 in Emmetsburg, Iowa, a
daughter of the late Ernest James and Florence Helen (White)
Wilcox. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford B.
Reazak. Both Mr. and Mrs. Reazak were residents of Charles City
until young adults, when they moved to Minnesota where they
built a resort in the Leach Lake area, later living in Florida
where they were with the Tampa Recreation Department for many
years, teaching and calling square dances. They were well known
internationally for their work in recreation.
Survivors include one
step-daughter Sharon Scoles of Nashua; one sister Helen E. Walsh
of Decatur, Ga.; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and
several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Reazak was very busy until her death. Cremation followed.
Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville, Ga. was in charge of
arrangements.

Florence B. Griffin, 98,
formerly of 410 S. Iowa St., Charles City, passed away early
Thursday morning, January 1, 2004, at the Salsbury Baptist Home,
in Charles City where she had been a resident for four years.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday, January
5, 2004, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, where she had
been a member for over 75 years, 106 Chapel Lane, Charles City,
with Rev. Carl Ries officiating. Interment will be at Calvary
Cemetery in Charles City.
The family greeted
friends Sunday, January 4, 2004, from 5 to 7 p.m. at
Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City. The
rosary was recited at 5 p.m. and the scripture wake service held
at 7 p.m. the visitation will continue Monday one hour prior to

Florence Bertha Griffin was born in Fayette County, Iowa, May
19, 1905, the daughter of Andrew and Edith (Nelson) Hanson.
Florence was educated in Fayette and Nashua. She was employed
with the Knitting Mills in Charles City, where she met and
married her husband, Martin Edward Griffin on March 9, 1925. The
couple resided in Charles City all of their married life. To
this union nine children were born.
As a young girl, Florence enjoyed horseback riding. She became
fond of basketball when her son Harold, played on the Immaculate
Conception basketball team. Florence also enjoyed dancing and
music. While riding or driving in the car, she would sing many
old songs. Family holidays were spent picnicking and fishing.
Florence leaves to mourn her children, three sons, Harold
Griffin; Everett Griffin and Jesse Griffin and his wife, Terri,
all of Charles City; three daughters, Arlene Lynes and her
husband, Al of Lansing, Iowa; Margaret Schwickerath of Charles
City and Phyllis Bluhm and her husband, Roger of Waverly; her
daughter-in-law, Betty Griffin of Charles City. In addition to
30 grandchildren, 45 great grandchildren and great great
grandchildren and her half brother, Jesse Delap and his wife,
Wyonna, of Charles City.
Florence was preceded in death by her parents, Edith Delap and
Andrew Hanson; her husband, Edward; three sons, Raymond,
Lawrence and Lyle; one grandson, Alvin W. Lynes; one
daughter-in-law, Doris Griffin; step father, Charles Delap;
sister, Fleeta Marie Hanson; two half sisters, Esther Parker,
Dorothy Ferch and one half brother, Edward Delap.
The pallbearers are going to be Mike Bluhm, Gary Griffin, Chad
Krueger, Jim Lynes, Billy Mangano and Roland Schwickerath.
The family wishes to thank the Salsbury Baptist Home for the
care they gave Florence during her residence, Father Carl Ries
for the funeral mass, Sister Jennifer Rausch for assistance in
arranging the vigil service and the ladies who prepared and
served the lunch.
MASON CITY - Mary M. Mincks,
75, of the Apple Valley Assisted Living, Clear Lake, died
Friday, January 2, 2004, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient
Unit, Mason City.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at the St. John
Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City. Pastor David Werges
of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church will officiate. Burial
will be in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City.
Friends may call at
the Hauser Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday and for one hour
prior to the service Tuesday at St. John Evangelical Lutheran
Church.
Mary M. Brooks was born June 22, 1928, in Morristown, Minn., the
daughter of George and Lillian (Herley) Brooks. She attended
school in Morristown, and on September 24, 1948, she was united
in marriage to Stanley Klampe in Northwood. She later married
Ivan Mincks on August 11, 1984, in Charles City. Mary worked at
Birdseye in Waseca, Minn. and for Brown Printing Co. for 20
years in Waseca. Mary was a member of St. John Evangelical
Lutheran Church, the Dorcus Circle at St. John, and was also a
member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed crocheting,
reading, cooking, and loved flowers and plants. Mary
particularly enjoyed just being out and around people.
Mary is survived by six daughters: Andrea (Donald) Rahn of
Waseca, Minn., Lynnette (Richard) Prange of Owatonna, Minn.,
Brenda (Steven) Rosa of White Bear Lake, Minn., Marcella
(Richard) Eichmeier of Lake Mills, and Mary Ellen (David)
Ostendorf of Waseca, Minn., and Jo-Ann (Jack) Schoonorver of
Cosmos, Minn.; four step children: Michael Mincks of Webster
City, Lanny Mincks of Charles City, Jay Mincks of Charles City,
and Linda Logan of Charels City. She is also survived by 16
grandchildren, 4 step grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, 1
step grandchild, two sisters Shirley (Ervin) Roeker of Eagle
Lake, Minn., and Bonnie Schuenke of Faribault, Minn., and one
brother Ronald (Alfreda) Brooks of Germany.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband,
one son, three sisters, three brothers, two grandchildren, and
one step granchild.
Memorials may go to the Hospice of North Iowa.
WATERLOO - Charles W. Starr,
69, of LaPorte City, died Saturday, January 3, 2004 at the
Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo of an aneurysm.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at the Hauser
Funeral Home, Charles City. Pastor Dennis Niezwaag, St. John
Evangelical Lutheran Church, will officiate. Burial will be in
Sunnyside Cemetery, Charles City.
Friends may call the
Hauser Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and for one hour
prior to services Wednesday at the funeral home.
Charles W. Starr was born on December 14, 1934, in Mitchell
County, the son of Charles and Dorothy (Johnson) Starr. He
received his education at Deerefield #3 in rural Chickasaw
County and graduated from Colwell High School. Charles married
Elaine Johnson in June of 1956. He later married Clare Foote on
February 28, 1992. Charles worked as a mechanic in North Iowa
later going on to work at John Deere in Waterloo where he worked
for 30 years, retiring in 1995. He had many hobbies including
collecting and working on vintage cars, fishing, hunting,
collecting guns, and spending time at the cabin in Minnesota. He
loved to visit and spent many hours visiting his many family
members and friends and often helped others with projects,
taking them to appointments, and helping with travel needs.
Charles lived life to the fullest.
Charles is survived by his loving wife Clare Foote of LaPorte
City; one son Benny (Mary) D. Starr of Elma, three step-sons:
Russel Foote, John Foote, and David Foote, and one step-daughter
Carol Foote Conry; two brothers James (Rose) Starr of Charles
City and Herbert (Betty) Starr of Clear Lake; five sisters:
Lorraine (Elvin) Enderson of Lake Mills, Delores (Bob) Wright,
Shirley (Larry) Katcher, and Lucile (Bill) Dunn all of Charles
City, and Marjorie (LeRoy) Roethler of Elma; 11 grandchildren, 8
great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents Jim and Dorothy
Starr, and one Step-son Bruce Foote.

NASHUA - Sharon Lee Mahan,
64, of Nashua passed away Friday morning, January 2, 2004, at
University hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004,
at the Hugeback and Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua, where
there will be a visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will
be at a later date at Sunnyside Memory Gardens, in Charles City.
She is survived by her
husband, Jerry, of Nashua; one son, Preston Mahan (Fiancee, Pat
Johnson) of Ionia; one daughter, Jeri (Walter) Knittle of
Nashua; seven grandchildren: Donald, Daniel, Dennis and Dustin
Van Slyke, Josh Mahan, Thad and Mariah Johnson; one brother,
George Alton of Nashua; one sister, Patricia Wait of Nashua.
Sharon was preceded in death by her parents; one brother,
Richard in 1999; one sister, Joanne Hurlbut in 1972.
Sharon Lee (Alton) Mahan was born October 14, 1939, in Waterloo,
the daughter of George and Frances (Shetler) Alton. She
graduated from Nashua high School in 1957. Sharon was united in
marriage to Jerry Mahan on April 7, 1958, at Hyattsville, Md.
She worked for C.H. Snider at the Ben Franklin store in Nashua
for many years, then at Hillendale's in New Hampton for about 4
years. When Kmart opened in Charles City, Sharon was one of
their first employees. She remained there until 1997, when she
could no longer work due to failing health.
GREENE - A Funeral Mass for
Dennis L. Viers, 58, of 205 South Water Street, Greene, will be
held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 6, 2004, at St. Mary's Catholic
Church in Greene with Rev. Msgr. Walter Brunkan officiating.
Burial will be in the St. Mary's Cemetery. Military rites will
be conducted by Tack Barnett Post 268 American Legion of Greene.
Visitation will be 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday at Reid's Funeral
Chapel in Greene where there will be a Scriptural Wake Service
at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue Tuesday at the Church one
hour before services.
Dennis Laverne Viers
was born March 14, 1945, in Greene, a son of Eugene Robert and
Ruth Mae (Skillen) Viers, and died Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, at the
Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
He received his education at the Greene Public Schools. He
entered into the United States Army on May 31, 1966, where he
served with the 101st Airborne "Screaming Eagles" in Vietnam.
Dennis was awarded the National Defense Medal, Vietnam Campaign
Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Vietnam
Service Medal, and the Parachute Badge. He was released from
active duty on January 29,1969. He also served with the Spt. Co.
1st Bn. 1133 Inf. Army National Guard.
On June 14, 1969, he was united in marriage to Judy K. Belden at
Nashua. They made their home in Greene and to this union was
born two daughters.
Dennis was employed for the City of Greene until 1973, and later
worked for White Farm Equipment in Charles City until the
factory closed. He was employed for Fischel Construction Co
until 1995, and was currently employed for Greene Ag Services.
Dennis will be remembered as an avid fisherman, and one who
enjoyed Nascar races and football. He was a loving husband,
father, and grandfather who enjoyed spending time and going
fishing with his grandchildren, and pheasant hunting with his
son-in-law.
He will be sadly missed by his wife, Judy of Greene, his two
daughters: Debra Viers of Greene and Michelle (Shane) Ott of
Offutt ASB, Neb.; three grandchildren: McKennah, Kaleb, and
Logan; his mother: Ruth Viers of Allison; one brother: Jim (Jo)
Viers of Rockwell City, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father on March 24, 2003; two
brothers: Kenneth Viers on May 8, 1998, and Robert "Butch" Viers
of June 3, 2001; and a nephew: Joseph Viers on November 25,
1977.

Robert Otto, 86, a resident
of 910 8th Street, Charles City, died Sunday, January 4, 2004,
at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.
Funeral services for Robert Otto will be held at 2:00 p.m.
Wednesday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. The Rev.
Kent Sovine, pastor of Bethany Alliance Church, will officiate.
Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, Charles City. There
will be a flag presentation by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

the Hauser Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and an hour
prior to the services on Wednesday.
Robert Eugene Otto was born March 9, 1917, at Rockford the son
of William and Clara (Gelhaus) Otto. He graduated from the
Rockford High School. On June 29, 1941, he was united in
marriage to Lois Stalker at Milan, Mo. Robert served in the
United States Army during World War II being awarded two Bronze
Stars for campaigns in India and Burma. Upon returning from
military duty he continued working at Oliver/White Farm
Corporation retiring in June of 1975. Robert's interests include
a life-long love of farming, gardening, yard work, fishing, and
attending rummage sales and auctions. Mornings would find him
enjoying coffee with "the boys." Robert always appreciated the
time spent with his family especially with his granddaughters.
Living family members include three children, Jean (Jerry) Sharp
of Charles City, Steven (Kathy) Otto of Charles City, and Ann
(Rick) Walters of Osage; eight grandchildren; 10 great
grandchildren; and a sister, Bernice Thompson of Charles City.
His parents, wife in 1999, six brothers, and two sisters
preceded him in death.

MASON CITY - Wilma J.
Clausen, 82, of 1705 S. Carolina, died Sunday, January 4, 2004,
at Good Shepherd Health Center. Funeral services will be held
11:00 a.m. Thursday at the First Congregational United Church of
Christ, 100 First Street NE, with Rev. Samuel Hamilton-Poore
officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at Major
Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue.
Memorials may be given to the First Congregational United Church
of Christ or Good Shepherd Telephone re-assurance.
Wilma was born
February 18, 1921, in rural Charles City the daughter of Bernice
and Dorothy (Wood) Lambert. She graduated from Charles City High
School in 1937, moved to Mason City in 1938 then attended
Hamilton Business College for one year. Wilma married Paul J.
Clausen October 18, 1941, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.
She was the bookkeeper for Clausen Plumbing and Heating for 25
years retiring in 1983. Wilma was a member of the First
Congregational United Church of Christ, active in various church
groups, life member of the VFW, volunteered at Community Kitchen
as well as other organizations, enjoyed ceramics, breakfast with
her friends and spending time with her family.
Wilma is survived by a daughter, Karen Hackman and husband
Robert of Mason City, son, Steve Clausen and wife Ann of Mason
City, daughter, Shelley Wallace and husband Greg of Troy, Ill.;
brother, James Lambert and wife Imogene of Arlington, Texas;
nine grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

Frank Groff, 80, a
resident of 600 Pfeiffer Avenue, Charles City, died Tuesday,
January 6, 2004, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in
Charles City.
A funeral Mass for Frank Groff will be held at 11:00 a.m.
Friday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in
Charles City. The Rev. Carl Ries, pastor, will celebrate the
Mass. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at St. Francis de
Sales Cemetery, Ossian. There will be a flag presentation by
the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.
Friends may call
at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4 to 8 p.m.
Thursday where the Rosary will be recited at 4:30 p.m. and
where there will be a Vigil Scriptural Wake Service at 7
p.m. followed by the Knights of Columbus Rosary. Visitation
will continue Friday at the church an hour prior to the
service.
Frank Clarence Groff was born January 7, 1923, in Remsen,
the son of Frank and Margaret (Homan) Groff. He graduated
from St. Mary's High School in Remsen and attended the
University of Iowa College of Pharmacy. Frank served in the
United States Army Medical Corps from 1943 to 1946. He was
stationed at Fort Lawton, WA and Prince Rupert, Canada. He
returned to the University of Iowa, receiving his B.S.
Degree in Pharmacy in 1948. On June 9, 1947, Frank married
Jean Becker at St. Francis de Sales Church in Ossian. To
their union were born three children: David, Mary Sue and
Bob. After their marriage, Frank worked at Layton Drug in
Cresco and in 1956 he started Groff Drug in Postville. Frank
also worked as a pharmacist in Waukon, Waverly and Charles
City before retiring in 1986. The Iowa Pharmacy Board
recognized him for his 50 years as a registered pharmacist.
Frank was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the
Catholic Order of Foresters. He was also a 50 year member of
the American Legion. His hobbies included woodworking,
crafts, outdoor activities and golfing. Frank loved having a
good time, was a great joker and was always ready to lend a
helping hand.
Frank is survived by his wife of 56 years, Jean of Charles
City; two sons, David of Duluth, Ga., and Robert (Pat) Groff
of West Chester, Pa.; a daughter, Mary (Howard) Eikenberry
of Urbandale; four grandchildren, Erin and Christopher Groff
and Emily and Sarah Eikenberry; a sister, Callista Wallmark
of Ossian, a brother, Roman (Marian) Groff of Remsen; and
many nieces and nephews.
Frank was preceded in death by his parents, Margaret in
1949, Frank Joseph in 1959, and a brother Clarence in 1974.
The family suggests memorials be directed to Hospice of
North Iowa Charles City site.

MARBLE ROCK: A Funeral
Mass for Agatha A. Krambeer, 94, of 640 East Bradford
Street, Marble Rock will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 12,
2004, at St. Mary's Catholic Church at Roseville, rural
Marble Rock, with Rev. Msgr. Walter Brunkan officiating.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will continue at the Parish Hall Monday one hour
before services.
Agatha Anne
Merfeld was born February 5, 1909, in rural Union Township,
Floyd County, a daughter of John Joseph and Kathryn (Kramer)
Merfeld, and died Thursday, January 8, 2004, at the Liebe
Care Center in Greene.
She received her education at St. Mary's School in Roseville
and graduated from the Marble Rock Public School in 1926.
She was employed at Moore's General Store in Marble Rock as
a clerk until becoming Assistant Postmaster in January 1935.
On October 7, 1939, she was united in marriage to Donald
Ellis Krambeer at St. Mary's Catholic Church at Roseville.
They made their home in Marble Rock where they were both
active in the community. She retired from the Post Office in
March 1973. Don preceded her in death on January 27, 1988.
Agie was a lifelong member of St. Mary's Catholic Church at

She was also preceded in death by her parents, four sisters:
Rose (Sister Mary Marcellina O.S.B.), Barbara, Ann, and
Christine; and six brothers: Tony, Merrick, Leander,
Bernard, and Edward Merfeld and a brother in infancy.

Geneva Margaret Hughes Byers was born September 20, 1920, in
Mitchell County, the daughter of Thomas and Juanita (Allen)
Hughes. She graduated from the Colwell High School in 1938.
Geneva was united in marriage to LaVerne Byers on August 26,
1946 at Austin, Minn.. During her working career she was
employed at Fisher Company, Belmont Manufacturing, Charles
City Manufacturing and Salsbury Laboratories. Geneva's
interests included crocheting, gardening, and reading.
Living family members include her husband of 57 years,
LaVerne of Charles City; a son, Wayne (Anna Mae) Stratton of
Charles City, three grandsons, Jeffrey, Joseph and Jerald
Stratton; nine great grandchildren; a brother, Robert
(Wilma) Hughes of Charles City; two sisters, Evelyn
Sturdivant of Charles City, and Bernita Chestek of Mesa,
Ariz.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a grandson, James
Stratton, and a brother, Thomas Hughes.
Lola P. Hoeft, 86,
formerly of 1710 Owen St., Charles City, died Friday evening
(January 9, 2004) at the Woodside Lutheran Home in
Ashwaubenon, Wis.

former resident of 808 Seventh Avenue, Charles City, died

Anita Jane Holmes Zimmer was born January 30, 1918, at
Plainfield, the daughter of Legrand and Chloe (Terry)
Holmes. She graduated from Nashua High School in 1935 and
then taught rural school in Bremer County. Anita was united
in marriage to Herbert Dean Zimmer on March 15, 1942, at the
First Baptist Church in Plainfield. They operated Zimmer
Grocery in Colwell until 1949, then farmed east of Charles
City for many years. Anita was a member of the First Baptist
Church.
Living family members include three children and their
spouses, David and Jo Ann Zimmer of Unionville, Howard and
Mary Zimmer of Austin, Minn., and Carol and Russ Story of
Clear Lake; seven grandchildren, Michael and John Zimmer,
Sarah, Steven, and Sally Story, Michelle Kreimeyer, and
Russell Osier; and three great grandchildren, Drew Osier and
Madison and Laura Kreimeyer. She was preceded in death by
her parents, husband, and a brother, Col. Lester E. Holmes.
Norbert Theodore
Franzen, age 78, of St. Lucas, died Wednesday evening,
January 7, 2004, at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in
Charles City.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, January 10,
2004, at St. Lukes Catholic Church in St. Lucas with Rev.
Marvin Salz officiating.

Gladys Holmes, 79, a
resident of 1708 Missouri Avenue, Charles City, died Friday,
January 9, at her son's home in Maple Grove, Minn., after a
long and courageous battle with ovarian cancer. At the time
of her death she was surrounded by members of her family.
Funeral services for Gladys Holmes will be held at 1:00 p.m.
Wednesday at the Trinity United Methodist Church. Pastor
Gayle Wilcox will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside
Cemetery.

Gladys Pauline Shaw Holmes was born April 20, 1924, near
Strawberry Point, the daughter of James and May (Stone)
Shaw. She attended country schools and graduated from the
Maynard High School in 1941. Gladys was united in marriage
to Ralph Holmes on June 6, 1943, at Maynard. Ralph's work
with Oliver/White Farm Equipment Company resulted in their
living in a variety of areas including Nashua, Eden Prairie,
Minn., Grayslake, Ill., and to Charles City in 1984. Gladys
was a "people person" and her working career found her
involved with customer service in a variety of retail
stores. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church,
United Methodist Women, and Pythian Sisters. Her interests
included working with the public, sewing, photography and
talking on the telephone. Gladys looked forward to spending
time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
Living family members include her husband, Ralph Holmes of
Charles City; two children Roger (Ann) Holmes of Maple
Grove, Minn.; and Myrna (Eli) Leijia of Battle Ground,
Wash.; six grandchildren, Michelle Maijala, Amy Gabel, twins
Randall and Ryan Gabel, Elizabeth "Betsey" Faerber and
Maggie Holmes; a great grandson, Jacob Wyatt; a sister, Eva
Cumberland of Des Moines; and several nieces and nephews.
Her parents, twin infant brothers, and a sister, Vera
Blaker, preceded her in death.

North Iowa Charles City site.

Bernice E. Parcher, 82,
of 2150 9th St., Rockford, died Monday, January 12, 2004 at
the Nora Springs Care Center.

Bernice Eleanor Silvest was born March 4, 1921 in Ellis
Township in Hardin County, the daughter of Albert Lee and
Dora (Tjarks) Silvest. She graduated from Buckeye High
School. Bernice married Merle Clock, who died in 1967. She
later married Donald V. Parcher on September 11, 1970 at the
Methodist Church in Albert Lea, Minn. Bernice was an active
member of the Methodist Church for 65 years. She enjoyed
traveling and going to livestock sales across the country.
Bernice is survived by her husband Donald V. Parcher, her
sons Merlin Clock, Dennis Clock, and Jerry Clock, all of
Alden; her step-children: Pat Verink of Iowa Falls, Lou Ella
Barker of Ohio, Jim Clock of Iowa Falls, Richard Clock of
Des Moines, Larry Parcher of Rudd, Steven Parcher of
Rockford, Bonnie Caspers of Rockwell, Ronald Parcher of
Rockford, and Janet Winter of Letz; and her sisters Eva Ann
Raska of Nevada and Dorothy Bates of Iowa Falls.
Bernice was preceded in death by her parents, her first
husband, one son, four brothers, one sister, two step-sons,
and one step-daughter.
Memorials may be directed to the Salvation Army or to the
Nora Springs Care Center.

LANSING - On January 11,
2004, Alvin L. Lynes was called home to his Heavenly Father.
Services for Mr. Lynes will be held Thursday, January 15,
2004, at 10:30 a.m. at the Center Baptist Church outside of
Lansing. Following the reception there, interment will take
place at Willow Lawn Cemetery, Plainfield at 3:30 p.m. Those
meeting in Plainfield are asked to wait for the family's
arrival at the First Baptist Church in Plainfield prior to
proceeding to Willow Lawn.
Friends and family
are invited to a visitation for Mr. Lynes today, January 14,
2004, between 4 and 8 p.m. at the Thornburg Hanson Funeral
Home in Lansing and one hour prior to the service on

Al was born October 24, 1930, in Waverly to Leonard Leroy
and Lulu Irene (Melton) Lynes. Much of his youth was spent
on the family farm near Plainfield where he helped raise
registered Ayrshires. He enjoyed playing basketball,
baseball and became an avid golfer. He attended Wartburg
College, the University of Northern Iowa and was a graduate
of the School of Banking at the University of
Wisconsin-Madison.
On January 3, 1950, Al was united in marriage to Arlene Ruth
Griffin of Charles City. From this union were born four
children, Gregg, Jim, Angie and Bill. All enjoyed many
family activities including camping, hunting and fishing and
played Bridge on many occasions. He was active in academics,
scouting and athletics.
In 1948, Mr. Lynes began his banking career with the Farmers
Bank in Plainfield and later continued in Cedar Falls and
Independence before retiring in 1990 as president of the
Kerndt Brothers Savings Bank in Lansing. He returned to
banking briefly as a consultant to serve with the Farmers &
Merchants Bank of Waukon, retiring permanently in December
1993.
Mr. Lynes held offices on the Plainfield and Independence
School Boards and was a member of the Lions Club and Rotary
Club. He was named Outstanding Rotarian in 1966-67. He
served on the Municipal Light Board in Independence as
secretary/treasurer and as president. Al was politically
interested and active throughout his life.
Mr. Lynes served as a liaison for Franciscan Skemp of
LaCrosse as a representative of the Thornton Manor Board. He
was an advocate for low income housing for the elderly,
assisting in the development of housing complexes in
Independence and Lansing.
Al was a faithful servant of the Lord and was a lifelong
member of the Baptist Faith. He was active in Sunday School
as a teacher and superintendent, on the Board of Trustees,
as well as a deacon, treasurer, usher and supported numerous
spiritual causes. He served on the Iowa Baptist Conference
Board for many years.
Mr. Lynes is survived by Arlene, his loving wife of 54
years; sons Gregg L. (Sue Ann) Lynes of Iowa City, James J.
(Cathy) Lynes of Plover, Wis.; and daughter Angie R. Lynes
of Harrodsburg, Ky. He also leaves behind six grandchildren
and one step-grandchild. He is additionally survived by one
sister, Janet (Ellerman) Gaede of Tripoli, and many nephews
and nieces, as well as step-brothers Rick and Royce Reeves
and step-sister Roberta Reeves Reints. Al enjoyed the
company of many friends, young and old, and family
throughout his lifetime.
Alvin was preceded in death by one son, Alvin William "Bill"
in 1996, an older sister Margaret (Mrs. Kenneth) Kahl of
Grundy Center in 2001, his parents and a loving step-mother
Myrtle (Randolph Reeves) Lynes.

Lola Pearl Shearer
was born to Walter and Mable (Acton) Shearer in Madrid,
Iowa, on February 8, 1917. Lola was raised in the Madrid and
Charles City areas and graduated from Colwell High School,
class of 1935. Lola was united in marriage to Lester William
Hoeft in April of 1938 at St. John Evangelical Lutheran
Church, Charles City. To this union three children were
born. Mrs. Hoeft worked several years as a nurse's aide at
Charles City Hospitals. She and her husband, Lester lived
and farmed north of Charles City until his death in 1982.
After her husband's death, Lola moved to Charles City and
lived there until 2001, when she moved to Wisconsin. Mrs.
Hoeft was a lifelong member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran
Church in Charles City and was an active member of the
Eastern Star, Pythian Sisters and White Shrine. She
participated in both the Colwell and Charles City Seniors
Club, Welcome Club and many other social clubs and
activities. Her greatest attribute was her family and
greatest joys were her grandchildren.
Grateful for having had the privilege of sharing in her life
are her two children, Ruth Ann Mullen of Loudon, Tenn., and
William A. Hoeft of Little Suamico, Wis. Mrs. Hoeft also
raised two grandchildren, Pamela Fisher Wilson of Johnston,
Iowa, and Michael T. Fisher of Kansas City, Mo. In addition,
she is the grandmother of six other grandchildren: Jeffery
L. Mullen of Atlanta, Ga.; Jody Mullen Freeman of Knoxville,
Tenn.; Scott A. Mullen of Roswell, Ga.; Sandie S. Mullen of
Kansas City, Mo.; Kaley Hoeft Bell of Plymouth, Minn., and
Joseph W. Hoeft of Bristol, Wis. Mrs. Hoeft is the great
grandmother of nine, including Abbie Onken, Molly Onken, Zoe
Wilson, Matthew Freeman, Jonathan Freeman, Kyle Bell, Kyra
Bell, Vaughan Hoeft and Audrey Mullen. Her two surviving
brothers are Richard Shearer of Parsons, Kan., and Earnst
Shearer of Adel, Iowa.
Lola was preceded in death by her husband, Lester; a
daughter, Leola Catherine Fisher; her parents; one sister
and six brothers.

Shirley Ann Hurst Pennington was born April 13, 1935, in
Floyd County, the daughter of Roy and Elsie (Hopkes) Hurst.
She was baptized and confirmed at St. John Evangelical
Lutheran Church. Shirley graduated from the Charles City
High School in 1953 and from Gates College with a
secretarial and accounting degree. She worked for Wise Baker
CPA in Waterloo and for Sunnyside Memory Gardens until 1959.
Shirley was united in marriage to Bruce Pennington on June
2, 1957 at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles
City. They farmed northeast of Rudd their entire lives. She
was an active member of the Lutheran Church where she had
taught Sunday School and catechism classes. She had held
many offices in the Floyd County Cattle Women, had served as
president of the Iowa Cattle Women from 1987-88, on the Iowa
Cattlemen's Board, the ANCW Executive Board and on a
Governor's Commission in 1994-97. Her interest in youth was
seen in her being a 4-H Leader, and serving on the 4-H
Foundation. Shirley was named the Iowa Outstanding Cattle
Women in 1984, and was chosen Iowa Master Farm Homemaker in
1992. She will be remembered for her cooking and baking,
winning entries of food at the state fair, her love of
traveling in the motor home, visiting, and keeping in touch
with her relatives and friends.
Living family members include her husband, Bruce of Rudd;
two daughters, Julie Westendorf of Gulf Breeze, Fla., and
Cindy (Mark) Snell of Ames; five grandchildren, Laura,
Patrick,
And Nathan Snell, and Elizabeth and Sarah Westendorf; and a
sister, Darlene (Jim) Dommel of Golden Valley, Minn.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Debra
Pennington, and a granddaughter, Andrea Snell.

2004, after a long battle with cancer.

Wilma M. Grant, 86, of

Wilma Mae Swab was born January 14, 1918, in Greene, the
daughter of Clarence and Elsie (Kivell) Swab. She graduated
from Greene High School, and on March 16, 1940, she was
united in marriage to LeRoy Grant in Allison. Wilma worked
for 20 years at Allied Redi-Mix with her husband while also
doing the bookkeeping for Allied Construction. Wilma was a
member of Trinity United Methodist Church. She was also a
member of Wildwood Country Club and Alden Pines Country Club
in St. James City, Fla., where she had a hole-in-one. She
enjoyed sewing and taught her granddaughters to sew and
always had cookies made for her grandchildren and
great-grandchildren. Wilma also enjoyed going on fishing
trips with LeRoy to Canada.
Wilma is survived and lovingly remembered by her husband, E.
LeRoy Grant of Charles City; her son, Gary (Mary) Grant of
Sedalia, Mo.; her daughter, Janice (Bob Martin) Grant of
Oregon, Wis.; her brothers Robert (Wreatha) Swab of Charles
City and Max Swab of Marshalltown; her grandchildren Tammy
(John) McBride of Mineral Springs, Ark., Kimberly (Michael)
Hemann of Fort Worth, Texas, David (Sheila) Grant of
Colombia, Mo., Lisa (David) Klade of Oregon, Wis., and Erik
Martin of Madison, Wis.; and eight great-grandchildren.
Wilma was preceded in death by her daughter, Barbara; her
parents; and her sisters, Ailene Samek and Marguerite Swab.

FLOYD - Randall L. Hoy,
49, a resident of 810 Pearl Street, Floyd, died Friday,
January 16, 2004, at Mercy Medical Center in Mason City.

Randall "Randy" Lee Hoy was born November 9, 1954, in
Charles City, the son of Donald Sr. and Dorothy (Nordman)
Hoy. He graduated from Charles City High School in 1974, and
on July 13, 1974, he was united in marriage to Gayle Tack at
the Grace United Methodist Church in Floyd. Randy worked for
Gil White Plumbing and Heating, and later for Iowa Mold
Tooling Co. in Garner as a certified welder, and also in the
Research and Development department. In 1988, Randy started
Hoy's Tin Shed in Floyd. Early on, Randy refinished
furniture and then worked mainly on the craft's circuit with
his woodworking for the past 15 years. Randy was a member of
the Grace United Methodist Church in Floyd, and was a past
member of the Floyd Lion's Club. Randy enjoyed woodworking
and camping trips with his family, and in his younger years,
enjoyed snowmobiling and was proud of restoring his 1969
Cougar. Randy always loved to share his new projects with
his family, and the time spent with them and his dog, Lucy,
were always most important.
Randy is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife Gayle
of Floyd; his son Eric (Michelle) Hoy of Ionia; his daughter

Dell I. Gifford, 83, of
100 Park Lane Dr., Charles City, died Thursday morning,
January 15, 2004, at the Odyssey Hospice Inpatient Unit in
Mesa, Ariz.
Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday,
January 22, 2004, at Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt
St., Charles City, with Rev. Paul Wilcox officiating and
inurnment will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, rural Charles
City at a later date.
The family will
greet friends on Thursday morning one hour prior to services
at Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home 401 Blunt St., Charles City.

Dell Irene (Johnson) Gifford was born October 25, 1920, in
Floyd, the daughter of Harold 'Heavy' and Florence (Hill)
Johnson. She grew up and attended school in Floyd, Clear
Lake and Cherokee, Iowa. On January 3, 1946, she was united
in marriage to Clyde Henry Gifford in Muskogee, Okla. Dell
and Clyde spent part of their married life in Oklahoma, then
returned to Charles City to make their home. Dell was
employed by City Motor Parts and Farm Fleet in Charles City
as a bookkeeper from 1960-1972. She was later employed in
Alamo, Texas, from 1972-1982, while residing there during
the winter months. In her later years Dell met Dale Schultz,
a very special friend.
Dell was a member of Trinity Methodist Church in Charles
City and the Women of the Moose.
Living family members include her son, Dennis and his wife
Glenda; two granddaughters, Brandy Mutch and her husband,
Cory; Lacy Zirbel and her husband, Nick; son-in-law, Jay
Mincks and special friend, Dale Schultz, all of Charles
City.
Dell was preceded in death by her parents; her husband,
Clyde; a daughter, Shari Mincks and a brother, Meredith
'Bud' Johnson.
Maurice Bunn, 74, a
resident of 2229 Walnut Avenue, Charles City, died Friday,
January 16, 2004, at his residence.
Funeral services for Maurice Bunn will be held at 10:30 a.m.
Wednesday, January 21, 2004, at the Hauser Funeral Home in
Charles City. The Rev. Terry Schoenfeld, pastor of the
Atlantic Evangelical Free Church, will officiate. Burial
will be in Riverside Cemetery.

Maurice Henry Bunn was born August 13, 1929, near Charles
City, the son of Clifford and Faye (Sweet) Bunn. He received
his education from the Charles City High School. Maurice
married Rose Brumond on September 28, 1947, at the Little
Brown Church. He farmed all his life on their Century Farm
on which he was both born and died. Maurice was a member of
the Moose Lodge. His interests included hunting of various
types, riding motorcycles, traveling and working in his
shop. Maurice looked forward to the time he could spend with
his family, especially his grandchildren.
Living family members include his wife, Rose of Charles
City; a granddaughter, Jill (Daniel) Leech of Charles City;
two great grandchildren, Sierra and Nola Leech; and three
step great-grandchildren, Autumn, Jon, and Destiny Leech.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Debera
Grove, and a son-in-law, Tom Grove.

Gerald L. Warrington,
81, passed away late Friday evening, January 16, 2004.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 21, 2004,
at 11 a.m. at New Life Community Church, 1960 Gilbert
Street, Charles City, with Rev. Michael McAbee officiating.
Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, rural Charles
City.

Gerald was born September 13, 1922 at Lyle, Minn., the son
of Clifford "Lavern" and Mabel (Basford) Warrington. Gerald
moved to Kensett at the age of 5 1/2 after his mother's
death, he was then raised by his aunt, attending and
graduating from high school there. When returning to Iowa
after serving in the Navy during WWII, he was united in
marriage to Irma Hoblit on May 24, 1944 in rural Little
Cedar. Irma passed away June 13, 1999.
Gerald was an Auto Parts Manager for 42 years at Standard
Battery Electric from 1950-1992. He belonged to The American
Legion and lived in Charles City for 58 years.
On July 15, 2000, Gerald and Anna were united in marriage at
the Little Brown Church, Nashua.
Survivors include his wife Anna; two sons, Jerry Lynn
(Cheryl) Warrington, Osage, and Donald Edward (Rebecca)
Warrington, Waverly; a daughter, Susan Kaye (Lynn) Spurbeck,
Forest City; four step-sons Timothy (Debra) Warrington,
Cincinnati, Ohio, Gerald Lee (Jennifer) Warrington,
Lawrenceburg, Ind., Kendall R. (Sarah) Warrington, West
Harrison, Ind., Len Warrington, Cincinnati, Ohio; 1
step-daughter Patricia (Perry) Vaught, Lawrenceburg, Ind.; a
sister Margaret Ebling, Mason City; three sisters-in-law
Francis Hundt, Charles City, Ona Maxwell, Charles City, Ida
(Jack) Schloemer, Nashua; six grandchildren; 11
step-grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a
step-great-grandchild.
Gerald was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife,
two sisters, Marilyn Erbe and Jacquelyn, in infancy, and
three brothers Cliff, Ken, Orville.

1989.
Rosa worked at Comp Systems and belonged to their union for
fifteen (15) years, retiring in the Fall of 2003. Rosa lived
in the Floyd and Chickasaw County area since 1968.
Survivors include her mother, Cornellia, Nora Springs; a
son, Ronald Bass, Ionia; one daughter, Shelly (Chuck)
Miller, Charles City; a step-son, Michael (Connie) Bass, 29
Palms, Calif.; three step-daughters, Connie (Mike) Driver,

JANESVILLE - Daniel John
Shelton, age 38, of Janesville, died Sunday, January 11,
2004, of injuries suffered in a motor vehicle accident near
his home.
Daniel was born in Janesville on August 2, 1965, the son of
Ronald and Kathryn (Holmseth) Shelton. He was baptized into
Christ in August of 1965, made the solemn vow of
confirmation on June 8, 1979 and renewed his vow of faith
August 24, 1997. Daniel graduated from Parker High School in
1983. He married Vickie Smith on July 5, 1997. Daniel
founded, owned and operated Air Climate Systems, Inc. since
1997 and had been in the heating and cooling business in
Janesville for the past 15 years. He was a member of Peace
Lutheran Church and Sheet Metal Workers Local #18. He loved
boating, motorcycling, hunting, fishing and trap shooting.
Dan is survived by
his wife, Vickie; a son Justin of Janesville; two
step-children, Bruce Winningham, Rice Lake, Wis., and Julie
(Ryan) Wilson, Janesville; three grandchildren, Justin,
Samantha and Alyson; his parents, Ronald and Kathryn
Shelton, 3241 S. Oakhill Road, Janesville, Iowa 53546; his
brother, Ron (Carrie) Shelton, Janesville; a nephew, Ryan
Shelton; two nieces, Samantha and Christina Shelton; aunts
and uncles Carolyn Walkup, Joyce and Keith Drahn, Ruthanne
and Rodney Ellis.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Howard and
Libbie Shelton, and John and Kathryn Holmseth; two uncles.

services for Cleland Jay Maxson, 94, of Port Charles
Assisted Living, Charles City, formerly of Marble Rock, will
be 11 a.m. today, Tuesday, January 20, 2004, at the First
Baptist Church in Charles City with Pastor Ruth Yeaton
officiating. Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery in
Marble Rock.
Visitation was 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., Monday, January 19, 2004,
at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Marble Rock and will continue
today, Tuesday, January 20, 2004 at the church one hour
before services.
Cleland Jay Maxson
was born May 10, 1909 in Union Township, Floyd County, a son
of Verne and Hattie (Kennedy) Maxson, and died Saturday,
January 17, 2004 at Port Charles in Charles City.
He received his education from the Marble Rock High School
graduating in 1926 and attended Iowa State University at
Ames. Cleland farmed north of Marble Rock. On January 1,
1942, he married Eunice Nash, who preceded him in death on
August 26, 1973. That same year, he moved into Marble Rock
to care for his mother.
On August 9, 1978, he married Coral Green Cross. They lived
in Marble Rock and were faithful members of the Bethel
Baptist Church there until it closed in 1983. They attended
the First Baptist Church where Cleland was a member and the
Christian Missionary Alliance Church, both in Charles City.
In March of 2001, Cleland and Cora moved to Port Charles
where Cora preceded him in death on November 4, 2001.
Cleland loved to sing and play hymns on the organ and
harmonica. He was an example of Christian brotherhood to all
who knew him. He read his Bible regularly and truly believed
in and worshiped his Savior.
He is survived by his brother Roy of Indianapolis, Ind.;
step-daughter Patricia Barton of DePere, Wisc.;
step-grandson Shawn Denny of Minneapolis, Minn.; several
cousins, nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.
Cleland was also preceded in death by his parents and
brother Darrell.

Dorothy Gifford, 72, a
resident of 606 Cedar Street, Charles City, died Wednesday,
January 21, 2004, at her residence.
Funeral services for Dorothy Gifford will be held at 10:30
a.m. Saturday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City.
Mr. Richard Tector will officiate. Burial will be in
Riverside Cemetery.

Dorothy Jean Hulick Gifford was born February 10, 1931, at
Waterloo, the daughter of Dewey and Maybelle (Meggitt)
Hulick. She received her education at Cedar Falls. On
February 20, 1954, she was united in marriage to Robert
Gifford at Waverly. Dorothy worked with the Charles City
Police Department, Salsbury Laboratories, and Hy-Vee. Bob
and Dorothy were avid campers and members of the CB Club and
also enjoyed spending time riding their motorcycles. She
collected dolls and elephants and liked to go to rummage
sales. Spending time with her family was her first priority.
Dorothy was known for her generosity and kindness as shown
in the opening of her home and being known as "mom" to many.
Living family members include five children, Michael
(Beverly) Luck of New Hartford, Debra Gifford of Floyd,
Michelle Ferch of Cedar Rapids, Robert D. Gifford, Jr. of
Charles City, and Cynthia (Ron) North of Ames; 13
grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
DES MOINES - Verna R.
Hagen of Des Moines died January 18, 2004, at Fleur Heights
Care Center. Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 20,
at 10 a.m. at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd.
Burial was at Graceland Cemetery in Buffalo Center, Iowa.
Verna was born March 25, 1919, in Scarville, Iowa, to Ole
and Agnes (Ergerdahl) Johnson. She was baptized in the
Bethel Lutheran Church in Vinje, Iowa on May 11, 1919, by
Reverend R.M. Fjelstad and was confirmed there also on May
21, 1933. She married Gordon O. Hagen on August 24, 1946, in
the Winnebago Lutheran Church at Lake Mills, Iowa, by the
Reverend H.F. Huseth.
Verna began
working in Charles City at the Oliver Corporation which
later became the White Farm Equipment Company on January 29,
1944. She retired from there on April 1, 1983. She later
moved to Des Moines to be closer to family.
Jesse "Jake" Venz, 89, a
resident of 1115 160th Street, Charles City, died Tuesday,
January 20, 2004, at his home.
Funeral services for Jake Venz will be held at 1:00 p.m.
Friday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. The Rev.
David Werges, pastor at Saint John Evangelical Lutheran
Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Carroll
Cemetery, Bassett.

Jesse Wilbur Venz was born November 19, 1914, in Chickasaw
County, the son of George and Lulu (Rose) Venz. He received
his education from rural Chickasaw County schools. Jake
farmed all his life on the family farm. He thoroughly
enjoyed spending time outdoors as seen in his interests in
hunting and fishing and his memberships in the National
Trappers Association and Iowa Trappers Association. Jake
also liked to play cards and also took great interest in
spending time with his nephews.
Living family members include two sisters, Daisy Wisher of
Waterloo, and Vera Lack of Orchard; and several nieces and
nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers,
Raymond, Vernon, Clifford, Walter, and Bernald Venz, and
three sisters, Pansy Larabee, Nellie Fisher and Wilma Venz
in infancy.

DeRock, 87, of 204 N. 7th St., Rockwell, died early
Wednesday, January 21, 2004, at Rockwell Community Nursing
Home.

Darvin Anderegg, 80, a
resident of 902 Cedar Street, Charles City, died Thursday,
January 22, 2004, at his home.
A funeral Mass for Darvin Anderegg will be held at 10:30
a.m. Monday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.
The Rev. Carl Ries, pastor, will celebrate the Mass. Burial
will be in Calvary Cemetery. The Charles City Ceremonial
Unit will conduct military honors.

Darvin Eugene Anderegg was born August 4, 1923, at West
Bend, the son of Harold and Rosetta (Williams) Anderegg. He
graduated from the West Bend High School. Darvin served in
the United States Navy during World War II receiving the
Pacific Theater Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon, Good
Conduct Ribbon, Victory Medal and Presidential Unit
Citation. On August 24, 1946, Darvin was united in marriage
to Virginia Rubino at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Basilica in
Brooklyn, NY. Darvin farmed for 10 years, worked as an
investigator for Retail Credit Company and provided security
for the White Farm Equipment Company. He was a member of the
Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, American Legion,
lifetime member of the V.F.W., and served as Little League
president for 16 years. His favorite pastimes included
baseball, gardening, playing cards and fishing. Family was
all important to Darvin and spending time with them was
always the focal point of his life.
Living family members include his wife, Virgina of Charles
City; four children, Patricia (Tom) Nockels of Des Moines,
Charlotte (Dave) Nehls, Eugene (Keri) Anderegg, and David
(Patrese) Anderegg all of Charles City; 13 grandchildren;
Kristin and Ehren Nockels, Jeff and Tricia Nehls, Casey,
Amy, Joe, Tyler, Cory, Sam, Alysse, Simon and Max Anderegg;
eight great grandchildren, Alex Jo, Anna, Ethan, Maranda,
Jordan, Hunter, Angel and Sydney; and three sisters, Joyce
(Charles) Marzen of Marble Rock, Phyllis Ferrier of Clear
Lake, and Mary Peter of Sheffield.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers,

January 22, 2004, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester of
natural causes.

Kenneth Clarence Roethler was born January 26, 1927, near
Elma, the son of Leo & Mae (Moosman) Roethler. He attended
Howard County Country Schools near his family's home. On
June 17, 1950, he was united in marriage to Evelyn Lockey at
the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Following their marriage
the couple farmed in the Davis Corners area. They later
moved to rural Alta Vista where he worked at the Equity and
farmed. He then went to work at Oliver-White Farm in Charles
City. Later he operated a stump grinding business in Elma
for nearly 20 years. The couple retired and moved to Charles
City in 1989, where they were currently residing.
Kenneth enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, wood carving
and wintering in Arizona.
Kenneth is survived by his wife of 53 years, Evelyn of
Charles City; three children: Dale and his wife, Tina, of
Alta Vista, Randy and his wife, Mary, of Elma, Debbie
Roethler and her special friend, Jim Halverson, of Cresco;
six grandchildren: Jennifer Schultschik, Brian Roethler,
Adam Roethler, Leon Roethler, Kenny Roethler, Jeremy
Roethler; five great grandchildren; five brothers: Milo of
Waterloo, Wally and his wife, June, of Waukon, James and his
wife, Anna Mae, of Riceville, LeRoy and his wife, Marjorie,
of Elma, Robert and his wife, Darlys, of Orchard; and a
sister, LaVonne Armstrong and her husband, Burl, of
Gilbertville.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Lucille
Roney, and twobrothers, Jack and Donald Roethler.
Friedrich "Fred" Ennen,
81, a resident of 1301 E Street, Charles City, died
Saturday, January 24, 2004, at USA Healthcare in Mason City.
Funeral services for Fred Ennen will be held at 10:30 a.m.
Tuesday at the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church. The
Rev. Dennis Niezwaag, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be
in Riverside Cemetery.
Friends may call
at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4 to 8 p.m.
Monday and at the church an hour prior to the service.
Friedrich Cassen Ennen was born July 29, 1922, at
Grossefehn, Germany, the son of Jacob and Antje (Tjaden)
Ennen. He received his education in Germany and was a
veteran of World War II. On October 17, 1948, he was united
in marriage to Hildegard Glomsda in Germany. They came to
the United States in 1952 making their home in Greene and
moving to Charles City in 1969. Fred worked for 25 years at
Oliver/White Farm Corporation retiring in 1984. He was a
member of Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church, the
Lutheran Brotherhood, Moose Lodge, White Farm Retirement
Club, AFL/CIO #1315, and the Senior Citizens. Fred liked to
work with his hands as seen in his wood carving skills and
gardening abilities. Leisure time would be spent reading,
playing 500 or swimming at the YMCA. He thoroughly enjoyed
spending time with his family and friends and will be
remembered for his desire to help his friends in whatever
way possible. Fred and Hildegard enjoyed traveling to
Germany where they visited their families.
Living family members include his wife, Hildegard, of
Charles City; six children, Monika (Robert) Teeple of
Greene, Erika (Thomas) Ennen of Deerfield, Wis., Ingrid
Ennen of Mason City, Jurgen (Marlene) Ennen of Homested,
Werner (Marian) Ennen of Eau Claire, Wis., and Manfred
(Kathy) Ennen of Raymond; ten grandchildren; seven great
grandchildren; and two sisters, Hanna (Harry) Johnson of
Allison, and Anita (Johann) Janssen of Germany.
His parents preceded him in death.

Bonnie Jean Banks, 77,
of #3 Lions Dr., Charles City, died early Friday morning
(January 23, 2004) surrounded by family at her home.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday
(January 27, 2004) at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church,
106 Chapel Lane, Charles City, with Rev. Carl Ries
presiding. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery in Charles
City.
The family will
greet friends Monday (January 26, 2004) from 5 to 7 p.m. at
Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City.
The rosary will be recited at 5 p.m. and the vigil wake
service held at 6:30 p.m. The visitation will continue
Tuesday one hour prior to services at the church. Those
wishing to extend memorials or an expression of sympathy may
direct them to Hospice of North Iowa or Immaculate
Conception Catholic School.
Bonnie Jean Banks was born in Mankato, Minn., July 15, 1926,
the daughter of Leonard and Ellen (Eustice) Synder. She
attended school in Charles City, graduating from Immaculate
Conception Catholic School, class of 1946. Bonnie married
her husband, Wes Banks at Immaculate Conception Church in
1946.The couple was blessed with five children. She took
great pleasure in providing for her family. Bonnie was
employed with White Farm of Charles City in the traffic
department for 24 years. From 1970 to 1973 she owned and
operated B.J.'s Shoppe, an affiliated Hallmark Gift Shop, in
Charles City.
Some of Bonnie's interests, passions and leisure activities
included dancing, socializing with friends at the Elks Club,
enjoying the peace and tranquility of living on the river,
watching the variety of wildlife prance through the
backyard, whether it be the deer curiously nibbling for
food, the birds singing in the trees or the terminally
lonely white swan that basked in the sun and floated
aimlessly on the water. She lovingly cherished time spent
with her entire family and looked forward to their
traditional "Family Biscuit Club" Sunday mornings after
church.
Bonnie will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by family
and friends who shared in her life. Those grateful for
having had the privilege of sharing in her life are her five
children, Vickie Shollenbarger and her husband, Dennis, of
Charles City, Karen Holzer and her husband, Ray of Charles
City, Robin Tegtmeier and her husband, Brian of Louisville,
Ky.; Denny Banks and his wife, Barbara, of Charles, City and
Faron Banks and his wife, Jill, of Charles City; 12
grandchildren, Tina Nelson and her husband, Bret, Tony
Shollenbarger, Jeff Holzer and his wife Angie, Jodi Page and
her husband, Jason, Jill Jespersen and her husband, Scott,
Kelli and Nick Tegtmeier, Nicole Davis and her husband,
Mike; Marty Banks and his wife, April; Kiley Banks; Cody
Banks and Caleb Banks. She will also be missed by fourteen
great grandchildren; a brother, Joe Synder and his wife,
Marion of Charles City; two sisters, Irene Field and her
husband, Paul of Charles City and Ann Aldridge and her
husband, Woody of San Marcos, Cal.
Bonnie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband,

LANDISVILLE, Pa. -
Donald R. Scott, age 80 of Landisville, Pennsylvania, died
on Saturday, January 24, 2004, at the Essa Flory Hospice
Center following a brief illness.
Born in Marble Rock, he was the son of the late William
David and Myrtle Parker Scott. He and his wife, Geraldine
Kopf Scott, celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary last
January 30th.
He was a graduate
of the Marble Rock High School, Class of 1940.
He was a partner in the D & J Scott Galleries for the past
fourteen years, having previously worked in sales for A. A.
Electric from 1983-1990. He was a realtor associate with
Caldwell Bankers and Engle, Hambright & Davies from 1980-83.
He was the owner of Donald R. Scott Barber Shop from
1948-80.
Mr. Scott was a member of St. John Lutheran Church where he
was a choir member, soloist, Sunday School Teacher and
Lector. He also was a Cantor at Temple Shaarai Shomayim. He
enjoyed building and flying model airplanes, had a pilot's
license, was a member of the Flying Dutchmen, the Lancaster
Area Soaring Society and the American Model Association. He
was also an actor with the Lancaster Theatre Arts
Association. He was a member of the Ephrata Cloisters Choir
and performed with the Vorspiel Summer Theatre.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WW II in India
and China. He was a drummer in the Military Band.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Scott is survived by a daughter
Vicki wife of Steven Brightbill of Littleton, Col.; two sons
David E. of Millersville and Daniel W. of State College;
eight grandchildren; and a brother, James R., husband of
Caroline Scott of Payson, Arizona.
He was preceded in death by two sisters Doris Benham and
Jean Annab and a brother Robert Scott.

Stiles, 78, died Sunday, January 25, 2004, at the Muse
Norris Inpatient Unit in Mason City, Iowa.
Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday,
January 28, 2004, at the Rudd United Methodist Church, 611
6th Street, Rudd. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory
Gardens, Charles City, with Military Rites conducted by the
Charles City Ceremonial Unit.
There will be no

Thola P. Bullen, 100,
formerly of 2102 Clarkview Dr., Charles City, died late
Sunday evening, January 25, 2003, at the 9th Street
Chautauqua Guest Home, Charles City.
Graveside Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday,
January 28, 2004, at Riverside Cemetery, Charles City, with
Rev. Paul Wilcox officiating. Interment will be in Riverside
Cemetery, in Charles City. Visitation is not planned at this

Thola Pearl Bullen
was born in Charles City, June 26, 1903, the daughter of
Wilson and Myrtle (Riley) Clark. Thola was an only child.
She grew up in and attended school in Charles City. Thola
had been a life-long resident of Charles City. On April 17,
1926, Thola was united in marriage to Roy A. Bullen at the
Christian Parsonage in Charles City. Thola was employed as a
kitchen aide at Fitzsimons Army Hospital in Denver, Colo. It
was there that she had the opportunity to meet Dwight
Eisenhower and General Clark, during World War II. Thola had
also been a homemaker and will be best remembered for being
a kind, gentle nurturing person. She was a member of Trinity
United Methodist Church, Charles City. Thola's interests
included reading and she enjoyed special moments dining out.
Thola will be fondly remembered by family and friends who
shared in her life.
Those grateful for having had the privilege in sharing in
her life are her niece, Mary Fisher of Charles City; three
nephews, Jerry Fisher of Charles City, James Nelson of
Sebring, Fla., and Jerry Bullen of Washington state. Thola
was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Bullen, and her
parents.

Floyd H. Lee, age 87 of
Charles City, died Thursday, January 22, 2004, at the Floyd
County Memorial Hospital after an extended illness.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m., today, Tuesday, January 27,
2004, at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua
with his son-in-law, Jim McAlees, presiding. Music for the
service will be provided by Nelda Shepherd as organist and
Janice Edson as vocalist. Interment will be in Oakhill
Cemetery, Nashua, with Brad Toebe, Curtis Lee, Marty Lee,
Lonnie Lee, Jimmy Lee and Tamara Lee as pallbearers.

Floyd was born November 8, 1916, in Marathon, Iowa, the son
of Frank Russell and Bernice Elizabeth (Beardsley) Lee. He
attended school in Clark, S. Dak. Floyd lived and raised his
family in Nashua from 1941 through the 1970's. After years
of being a carpenter and siding applicator, he worked for
Hydrotile in Nashua for 25 years, retiring in 1985. Floyd
had lived in Charles City since the death of his wife,
Beryl. He married Mildred Steffler in 1993.
Survivors include his wife Mildred; one daughter Barbara and
Jim McAlees of Bradenton, Fla.; one son Gary Lee of
Plainfield; two step-sons Allen and Linda Steffler of
LaGrande, Ore. and Steven and Lang Steffler of Anchorage,
Alaska; nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; and
one sister Izetta Lee of Mora, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife; two
sons: James Lee and Robert Lee; and four brothers: Donald
Lee, Russell Lee, Roy Lee and Fred Lee.

R. Hallberg, 88, of Cahokia, Ill., formerly of Charles City,
born June 30, 1915, in McGregor, died Sunday, January 25,
2004, at Cahokia Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Cahokia,
Ill.
Mr. Hallberg was a retired machinist for Oliver Tractor
Factory in Charles City. He was a member of Bethel United
Church of Christ, Cahokia, Ill. and was a World War II U.S.
Navy Veteran.
He was preceded in
death by his wife, Lucinda M. Hallberg, who died February
27, 1993; his parents, Carl Joseph Martin and Della Mae
Hallberg; and a brother, Norman Hallberg.
Surviving are two brothers, Virgil E. (Jo Ann) Hallberg of
Cahokia, Ill. and Delbert E. (Verla) Hallberg of Lewiston,
Idaho; four nephews, Steven R. (Patti) Hoock of Waterloo,
Ill., Larry E. (Sheri) Hoock of Pensacola, Fla., Marty
(Marilyn) Hallberg of Lewiston, Idaho and Del (Lisa)

Kenneth "Red" E.
Stiles was born January 14, 1926, at Rudd, to William E. and
Ruth (Wagner) Stiles. "Red" graduated from Rudd High School.
On December 13, 1945 he was united in marriage to Grace Edna
Hennick in Austin, Minn. Kenneth served in the U.S. Army
during WW II being Honorably Discharged as a Spec. Sergeant.
Kenneth was a lifetime resident of Rudd, being self-employed
all his life as a farmer, owner and operator of Rudd Lumber
and Hardware and Stiles Corp. Construction until his
retirement in 2000. Kenneth belonged to the United Methodist
Church of Rudd, the American Legion and Lions.
Survivors include Grace, his wife and friend for 59 years; 3
sons, William B. (Michelle) of Trauco Canyon, Calif.,
Randall Lee (Kathy) of Rockwell, Michael (Jackie) of Rudd;
one daughter, Sue A. (Stephen) Lockwood of Pompano Beach,
Fla.; a brother, Leland (Beverly) Stiles of Graettinger; two
sisters, Betty Laudner of Santee, Calif., Dorothy (Doyle)
Newton of Moline, Ill.; three sisters-in law, Marge Stiles,
Geraldine Stiles, Jo Stiles; eight grandchildren, Tamara
(Todd) Choate of Lake Forest, Calif., Ashley, Jared, Jordan
Stiles of Rockwell, Erin Lockwood of Pompano Beach, Fla.,
Joseph Peters of Floyd, Matthew and Allison Stiles of Rudd;

William "Willie" Rouse,
62, a resident of Cable, Wis., formerly of Charles City,
died Wednesday, January 28, 2004, at his home of natural
causes.
A funeral Mass for Willie Rouse will be held at 10:00 a.m.
Saturday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. The
Rev. Carl Ries, pastor, will celebrate the Mass. Burial will
be at a later date. There will be a flag presentation by the
Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

William Thomas Rouse was born December 10, 1941, at Elma,
the son of Leo and Maxine (Elliott) Rouse. He graduated from
the Colwell Consolidated High School in 1959. Willie served
in the United States Air Force from 1959 to 1964, received a
hardship discharge and returned to Charles City to help
raise his younger siblings, working for many years at
Oliver/White Farm Equipment Company. In 1981 he moved to
Cable, Wis., to "fulfill his dreams" and remained there
until his death. Willie was a true outdoorsman and lived off
the land. He served as a guide for fisherman and hunters,
produced maple syrup, and grew mushrooms. His interests
included visiting with people, teaching children the basics
of outdoor living, and playing cards. Willie will be
remembered for his ability to make the best out of any
situation. He was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church.
Living family members include his mother, Maxine Rouse of
Elma; four brothers, Elliott "Duff" (Patsy) Rouse of Charles
City, Eugene "Nick" (Kathy) Rouse of Denver, Colo., Tom
(Gail) Rouse, and Dennis (Kim) Rouse both of Charles City;
four sisters, JoAnn Chambers, Suzanne (Jerry) Hartwell,
Linda (Bill) Mitchell, and Lora (Monte) Millard, all of
Charles City; and many nieces, nephews and great nieces and
nephews.
His father preceded him in death on December 26, 1963.

Robert Kenneth
Strickler was born February 22, 1933, in Jenners Township,
Somerset County, Pa., a son of George Alfred and Neva
Virginia (Blair) Strickler. He died Wednesday, January 28,
2004, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital Hospice Unit in
Charles City.
He received his education in the public schools in Boswell,
Pa., and entered the United States Air Force on August 30,
1950, where he served with the 802nd Motor Vehicle Squad. He
was honorably discharged on September 5, 1953.
One June 25, 1952, he was united in marriage to Joan
Hartwell in Mason City. They made their home in Mason City
and later in Nora Springs, where they both were employed
with Northwestern States Portland Cement Co. in Mason City.
Bob retired in 1985 with 31 years service to the company.
Bob and Joan moved to Greene in 1995.
Bob was a member of the Nora Springs Volunteer Ambulance for
eight years, CPR instructor and served on the Nora Springs
City Council. He was a Little League coach, a Boy Scout
leader and a member of the Nora Springs H.D.S. Post 449
American Legion.
Living family members include his loving wife of 52 years,
Joan, of Greene; one daughter, Connie (John) Stone of
Ellenville. NY; two sons, Robert Jr. (Peggy) Strickler of
Bristow, and Jeff (Jan) Strickler of Waverly; five
grandchildren: Tonya (Sam), Jessie, Jonne, Justin and
Jennifer; two great-grandchildren: Sammy and Elena; and one
brother, George "June" Strickler, of Pittsburgh, Pa.; as
well as several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Violet
Koba; and two nephews: Carey and Glen.

72, of Nashua, passed away Thursday morning, January 29,
2004, at the Waverly Municipal Hospital in Waverly of
complications following surgery.

visitation will be Sunday, February 1, 2004, from 2 p.m. to

NASHUA - Leila L.
Conklin, 91, of Nashua, passed away Thursday morning,
January 29, 2004, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in
Charles City.
Funeral services are pending at the Hugeback & Chenoweth
Funeral Home in Nashua.
GREENE - A Funeral Mass
for Edward J. Roskup, 75, of 111 North Fifth Street, Greene,
will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 31, 2004, at
St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greene, with Rev. Msgr. Walter
Brunkan officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary's
Cemetery, with Military Rites conducted by Tack Barnett Post
268 American Legion of Greene.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday at Reid's Funeral
Chapel in Greene, where there will be a Scripture Wake
Service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue Saturday at the
church one hour before services.
Edward John Roskup
was born August 23, 1928, at St. Ansgar, Iowa, the son of
Joseph and Pauline (Winter) Roskup. He died Wednesday,
January 28, 2004, at his home in Greene under the care of
Hospice of North Iowa.
He spent his early childhood in St. Ansgar until the family
moved to Iowa City, where he attended and graduated from St.
Patrick's School. He was first employed as a waiter at the
University Hospital. On May 3, 1946, he was inducted into
the United States Army, where he served as a guard with
Company L 15th Infantry in Berlin, Germany, He was honorably
discharged on October 28, 1947.
Following his discharge, he was employed by the University
Laundry. In 1950, he became employed as a bus driver for
Iowa City Coach Company, and later Iowa City Transit, where
he retired with over 39 years of service. He received many
awards for safe driving and years of performance. He was
also awarded for lifesaving by Governor Robert D. Ray.
On June 30, 1956, he was united in marriage to Twyla Marie
Losee at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Iowa City. They made
their home at 1308 East Bloomington in Iowa City for 26
years before moving to Greene in September 1991. Ed and
Twyla were faithful members of St. Mary's Catholic Church in
Greene. Twyla died on October 23, 1998.
Ed will be remembered as an avid walker, often times up to
eight miles a day. He enjoyed fishing, eating ice cream and
spending time with his grandchildren.
He will be sadly missed by his daughter, Teresa Marie Van
Orden of Greene; one son, Edward Roskup Jr., and his wife,
Margaret, of Wellman; three grandchildren: Edward J. "EJ"
Roskup III of Wellman, Billy Van Orden of Greene and Karitta
Rae Van Orden of Mason City; his twin sister, Rosemary
Dahnke, of Iowa City; and a brother, Jake (Phyllis) Roskup,
of Iowa City.
Ed was also preceded in death by his parent; four sisters:
Paulina Roskup, Katherine Davis, Pauline Coder and Mary
Oesterricher; and three brothers: Andrew, Peter and Joseph
Roskup.
Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct
memorials to the Edward J. Roskup Memorial Fund in care of
the family.
Reid's Funeral Chapel, Greene, (641) 823-4457, is in charge
