Floyd Bier Floyd C. Bier, 100, formerly of 308
2nd Ave. Charles City, died Saturday afternoon, June 1,
2002 at Riverside Chautauqua Guest Home.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday,
June 4, 2002, at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church.
Officiating will be the Rev. Dennis Niezwaag. Interment
will be at Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will be from
4-7 p.m. Monday at Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401
Blunt, Charles City and again one hour prior to services
at the church. Those planning an expression of sympathy

Floyd was born in Greene Iowa, on Aug. 16, 1901, one
of two sons to Charles and Alice "Bicknese" Bier. He
received his high school diploma there in 1921. He was
employed as a lineman for AT&T and then when the war
broke out he joined the Navy from 1942 until 1945. He
honorably served his country on LST landing craft in the
South Pacific and then was in the Port Directors Office
at the Panama Canal. After his discharge he worked for
the Oliver Plant in construction and maintenance until
his retirement in 1966. He was united in marriage to
Marie E. Schwab on June 5, 1937, at Cambridge, Ill.,
that lasted 64 years until Marie's death. They traveled
extensively throughout the United States and one of
their fondest trips was to the Holy Land. They both
enjoyed fishing for salmon and trout, playing cards and
square dancing. Their favorite time of year was at
Thanksgiving and Christmas when they could spend the
holidays with their family. Later in their years they
wintered in Texas, Florida, and Arizona. Floyd was a
member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church.
Floyd is survived by his niece Gloria Ann and her
husband Jim DeGroote, Shell Rock, Iowa; two nephews
Larry and his wife Alice Schwab, Allison, Iowa; and
Allen and his wife Dorothy A. Schwab, Shell Rock, a
sister-in-law Dorothy B. Schwab, Shell Rock and a
special son and daughter Leonard and Eleanor Bornstein,
Charles City, several nieces and nephews and great
nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.
He was proceeded in death by his Parents, his wife
Marie on March 14, 2002, and one brother Carlton Bier.
Clyde Shultz
Clyde M. Shultz, 72, of 1011 Hildreth St, Charles
City, died Monday morning, June 3, 2002, in the Hospice
Unit of Floyd County Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be held 2:30 PM, Thursday, June
6, 2002, at Trinity United Methodist Church, Charles
City. Officiating will be the Rev. Dianne Christopher.
Visitation will be from 4:00 until 8:00 PM, today,
Wednesday, June 5, 2002, at Fullerton Hage Funeral Home,
401 Blunt St., Charles City and again one hour prior to
services at the church. Interment will be in Riverside
Cemetery, Charles City. Those planning an expression of

United Methodist Church or Hospice of North Iowa.
Clyde was born the youngest of seven sons to Clinton
and Myrtle "Elfers" Shultz on August 6, 1929. He
attended rural school near Marble Rock and then
graduated in 1947 from Charles City High School. During
high school he was awarded the FFA State Farmers Award
and the American Farmer Award. Clyde was baptized at the
First Presbyterian Church in Greene, on April 15, 1949.
On March 5, 1950 he was united in marriage to Shirley
Marie Stock at the Little Brown Church near Nashua, To
this union was born four children. They farmed near
Powersville, for 25 years and then moved to Nashua where
they raised commodities such as corn, soybeans and
cattle, especially Angus. He had many transactions with
the family friends the Gabelmann's. The packing plant
buyers were very impressed with Clyde's ability to grade
his herd and many deals were completed on his word and
handshake. Clyde also was a giving man who would drop
everything to assist a neighbor or friend. He taught his
family the rewards of hard work, negotiations and fair
play. His love of tractors led him to enter the parade
of tractors where he won two trophies for his ability to
operate them. Clyde loved the farm and would do anything
to protect it including planting many trees. He also
prided himself on his red pickup. During his farming
years he was active with the National Farmers
Organization. Like most farmers it was difficult to
actually retire but he and Shirley moved to Charles City
in 1998. Clyde's mind remained alert and sharp to the
point of keeping abreast of the stock market,
investments, and the market. This he shared with his
friends during coffee at Hy-Vee and Farmer's CO-OP. Then
he would travel to the library almost daily to learn
more.
Those thankful in sharing Clyde's life include his
wife of 52 years Shirley, Charles City; his only son
Calvin and his wife Deborah Shultz, Charles City; his
three loving daughters Nancy and her husband Ray
Ehlebracht, Rudd; Christy and her husband Duane Wegner,
Charles City, and Janis and her husband Dave Skuster,
Stewartville, MN; eleven grandchildren, Kirk Shultz,
Stephanie Hanson, Tina Hudspeth, Travis and Tonya
Ehlebracht, Jesse, Tanner and McKenzie Wegner, Kimberly,
Kara and Andrew Skuster, and six great grandchildren,
and two brothers Lowell Shultz, Charles City; and George
and his wife Margaret Shultz, Greene.
He was proceeded in death by his parents, one
precious granddaughter Kelsey Skuster, and four brothers
Raymond, Lloyd, Don and Dean.
Bonnie A. Dohlman
HAMPTON - Bonnie A. Dohlman, 68, of Hampton died June
3, 2002,
at the Hampton Care Center in Hampton of natural
causes. Funeral services will be Thursday, June 6, 2002,
at 1 p.m. at the Sietsema Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton
with the Rev. Julie Poore-Christensen officiating.
Inurnment will be at a later date in the Hampton
Cemetery in Hampton. Sietsema Vogel Funeral Home is in
charge of the arrangements.
Eugene Lensing
NASHUA - Eugene G. Lensing, 69, of Nashua died
Tuesday, June 4, 2002, at his home.
Funeral services were held on Friday, June 7, at St.
Boniface Catholic Church in Ionia with Reverend John
Hemann presiding. Burial was in the church cemetery with
graveside military honors provided by the New Hampton
American Legion and VFW Posts. Tom Marpe, Steve Lensing,
Craig Lensing, Ron Orthaus, Richard Pursell, Brad
Schmitt, Glen Gerlemann and John Harris served as casket
bearers.
Visitation was held Thursday, June 6, at the Ionia
Funeral Home, which was in charge of arrangements.
Eugene George Lensing was born May 23, 1933, in
Jackson Junction, the son of George and Catherine
(Gilbert) Lensing. He graduated from Waucoma High School
in 1951. After his schooling he went to work for Fred
Carlson Construction until 1956, when he entered the
U.S. Army and served his country until 1958. Upon
returning from the service, he worked at John Deere in
Waterloo for two years.
On June 18, 1960, he was united in marriage to Glenda
Harris at St. Joseph Catholic Church in New Hampton.
Following their marriage the couple resided in Nashua
and later moved to rural Ionia. Eugene worked for
Hydrotile for 28 years until the operation closed. He
then went to work for Croell Redi-Mix. He was a member
of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Ionia, where he
served several terms on the Parish Council.
He was a long-time 4-H Leader for the Ionia Rustlers,
a member of the Chickasaw Trail Riders Saddle Club,
enjoyed coon hunting, horses, camping and especially
spending time with his family and telling stories.
Survivors include his wife, Glenda, of Nashua; a
daughter, Jeannie (Steve) Pfaffle, of Kingsley; four
sons, David (Deb) of New Virginia, Mike (Rhonda) of
Ionia, Jim of St. James, Minn., and Larry (Lori) of
Ionia; seven grandchildren; two brothers, Vincent
(Wilma) Lensing and Gilbert (Kathy) Lensing, all of New
Hampton; five sisters, Maurita Marpe of Charles City,
Margaret (Cyril) Bohr of Ossian, Mary (Bob) Beckley of
Bellevue, Grace (Virgil) Gerleman of St. Lucas and
Theresa (Bill) Orthaus of Ionia; and numerous nieces and
nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents and a
brother-in-law, Elmer Marpe.
Thelma Kleinschmidt
Thelma V. (Wiebke) Kleinschmidt, formerly of Greene
and Nashua, died at 11:48 p.m. on Thursday, June 6,
2002, at Heritage Care Center in Mason City. Visitation
was held Sunday, June 9, 2002, at Chenoweth and Son
Funeral home in Nashua. Funeral services will be held at
St. John's Lutheran Church/Western Douglas in rural
Plainfield on Monday, June 10, at 10 a.m. with Pastor
Kim Thacker officiating. Chenoweth and Son Funeral Home
is in charge of arrangements.
Thelma Violet (Wiebke) Kleinschmidt was born March
22, 1932, in Butler County, rural Clarksville. She was
the daughter of the late Paul and Clara (Spier) Wiebke.
She was baptized at St. John's Lutheran Church,
Clarksville, on May 1, 1932, and later confirmed there.
Thelma graduated from Plainfield High School in 1950 and
worked for Lutheran Mutual Insurance Company in Waverly.
She was united in marriage to Norman K. Kleinschmidt
at St. John's Lutheran Church in Clarksville, on
December 28, 1952. To this union, three children were
born. Norman and Thelma made their home and farmed east
of Greene for 37 years. They moved to an acreage east of
Nashua in 1989. Norman Kleinschmidt died Nov. 30, 1994.
In February 1995, Thelma moved to Heritage Care Center
in Mason City due to health reasons.
Thelma loved working on the farm next to her husband.
She excelled in cooking, loved to garden, and enjoyed
spending time with her family. Her faith in God and the
love of her family and friends kept her going.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Norman
Kleinschmidt, and her parents, Paul and Clara Wiebke.
Thelma is survived by her daughter and husband,
Christa Ann and Ronald Guthrie, of Mason City; two sons
and their wives: Robert and Vicki Kleinschmidt of
Holmen, Wis.; and Richard and April Kleinschmidt of
Nashua; her sister and husband, Eileen Jo and Lloyd
Korte of Cedar Falls; two sister-in-laws, Norma Noel and
Gladys Beninga of Greene; and seven grandchildren,
Christopher and Justin Witter; Kelly, Amy and Kyle
Kleinschmidt; and Seth and Alex Kleinschmidt; many
relatives and friends.
Memorials may be directed to the family or St. John's
Lutheran Church/Western Douglas in memory of Thelma V.
Kleinschmidt.
Kevin Reiter
ROCKFORD - Kevin Reiter, 28, 2002, of 800 13th St.,
West Des Moines, formerly of Rockford, died Wednesday
June 5, 2002, in Des Moines from injuries suffered in a
motorcycle accident.
Funeral services were held Saturday June 8, 2002, at
the First United Methodist Church, Rockford. Interment
took place in the Riverside Cemetery in Rockford.

Kevin was born May 28, 1974, the son of Merlyn and
Ramona (Jackson) Reiter at the Floyd County Memorial
Hospital, Charles City. He graduated from the
Rudd-Rockford-Marble Rock school with the Class of 1992
and went on to Hawkeye Community College to study turf
management. He was the golf course superintendent at
Sunny Brae Golf course in Osage and then at Rockford
Golf and Country Club. Kevin then became the second
assistant at Elmcrest Golf and Country Club. In October
of 1998 he moved to Des Moines and began working for the
Des Moines Golf and Country Club as first assistant
superintendent of the North Course. One of Kevin's
highlights of his career was working to prepare the
course for the 1999 Senior Open. Kevin loved the game of
golf and enjoyed every minute working on the course. He
often spoke of nature's beauty in the birds singing and
the animals busy at work, especially the swans.
Kevin had many passions in his life including trout
fishing, traveling (especially flying), watching sports,
attending Iowa Hawkeye Football games, going to the
health club and watching NASCAR. He looked forward to
the time he was able to spend with his friends, favorite
English Bulldog "Lucy," and his two very special nieces.
Kevin's pride and joy was the 1966 Ford Mustang he
refurbished.
Those thankful for having shared in Kevin's life
include his parents, Merlyn and Ramona Reiter, one
sister; Shelley and her husband, Michael Brunner, of
Hiawatha; grandparents, Eno and Isabelle Reiter of
Charles City, two nieces; Kaylyn and Hannah Brunner of

Darlene Swartzrock
Darlene Opal Swartzrock, 75, 2192 Old Highway Road,
Charles City, Iowa., died Thursday June 6, 2002, at
Floyd County Memorial Hospital.

June 8, 2002, at Calvary Baptist Church, 703 Milwaukee
St., Charles City, with the Rev. Steven Brudnak
officiating. Interment will be held at Riverside
Cemetery, Charles City. immediately following services

Darlene was born Oct. 30, 1926, the daughter of Verne
and Sarah Schoolcraft in Renwick, Iowa.
On Aug. 9, 1947, Darlene was united in marriage to
Harold V. Swartzrock in Charles City. To this union two
sons were born.
Darlene had been a longtime member of Calvary Baptist
Church and she enjoyed attending many church-related
activities. She worked at Swartzrock Implement for 50
years as bookkeeper and parts manager. She had enjoyed
going to antique tractor shows and the annual Steam
Engine Show. Her hobbies also included needlepoint and
embroidery.
Those thankful for having shared in Darlene's life
include her husband Harold; her son, Steven E. and his
wife Diana of Charles City; 3 grandchildren, Benjamin,
Leah, and Daniel Swartzrock; sister, Doris Bettesworth
of Ettrick, Wisc.; and brother, Edgar J. Schoolcraft,
Forest City, Iowa.
Mrs. Swartzrock was preceded in death by her parents,
son, Vernon A., and two sisters, Verna Skillen and Grace
Gray.
Marie Clancy
WINONA, Minn. - Marie Ellen Clancy, 92, of Callista
Court, Winona, Minn., died Saturday, June 8, 2002, at
Callista Court. She was formerly of Rochester, and Cedar
Rapids.
Marie was born in Dumont, Butler County, on Aug. 2,
1909, to John and Maude (Huss) Clancy. Shortly after her
birth her parents moved to Charles City, where she lived
until joining the American Red Cross in November 1943.
She was a graduate of Mt. Mercy College in Cedar
Rapids. She then read law under the guidance of attorney
William K. Carr of Charles City and Dean Mason Ladd of
the College of Law at the University of Iowa.
During her long career with the American Red Cross,
she served as a case working in military hospitals; as
executive director of the Dubuque County Chapter of the
Red Cross and in 1949 came to Cedar Rapids to serve as
the executive director of the Linn County Chapter, now
called the Grant Wood Area Chapter. She retired from
this position in 1974.
Marie worked with servicemen and women and their
families during three wars -- World War II, the Korean
Conflict and the Vietnam War. She was well known to
hundreds of servicemen and women, veterans and their
families for her Red Cross work on their behalf.
She served on numerous agencies, church and public
school committees and had been a board member of the
Council of Social Planning, Cerebral Palsy Center,
Public Health Nursing Assoc., Council on Aging and Camp
Fire Girls. She also headed the United Way Special Gifts
Cabinet in 1977, all in Cedar Rapids.
Marie was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in
Winona, and formerly a member of St. Matthew's Catholic
in Cedar Rapids. She was a 30-year member of Quota Club,
Tourist Club and Mt. Mercy Alumni, all in Cedar Rapids.
In 1981 she received the Distinguished Alumni Award of
Mt. Mercy College.
She is survived by a sister, Gladys (Paul) Roche, of
Emmetsburg; nephews, John (Connie) Roche of Winona,
James (Shiela) Roche of LaMars, John (Phyllis) Clancy of
Washaugal, Wash., and Joe (Lori) Clancy of Davenport;
nieces, Judy (Wayne) Latch of Charles City and Virginia
(Jerry) Bennet of Colorado Springs, Colo. She is also
survived by eight great-nieces and nephews and a
sister-in-law, Margaret Clancy of Colorado Springs.
Marie was preceded in death by her parents and two
brothers, Kenneth and Carl.
A Mass to celebrate Marie's life will be held on
Tuesday, June 11, 2002, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's
Catholic Church in Winona with Rev. Joseph L. Keefe
officiating. Friends may call at the visitation commons
of St. Mary's Church on Tuesday from 9 to 10 a.m.
Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery in Charles City
on Tuesday, June 11, at 3:30 p.m.
Casketbearers are nephews, John and James Roche, and
great-nephews, Joseph and James Roche.

Kathryn Hayes
MASON CITY - Kathryn Elizabeth Lindaman Hayes. 93, of
Charles City passed away on Saturday, June 8, 2002, at
the Muse Norris Hospice in Mason City.
Services will be held on Tuesday, June 11, at 11 a.m.
at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City with Mother
Kate Campbell, priest, officiating. Burial will follow
at the Riverside Cemetery at Charles City. A gathering
of family and friends will be held one hour prior to the
memorial service.
Kathryn was born Oct. 5, 1908, in Rockland, Mass.,
near Boston, the eldest child of Viva and Mable (Burns)
Lindaman. Her father was a practicing spitball artist
for the Boston Braves.
Kathryn attended school in Charles City. Upon
graduating from Charles City High School she attended
Mt. Mercy College in Cedar Rapids for one year to study
accounting. She also assisted the nuns teaching school
at Cedar Rapids.
She was a Floyd County Deputy Clerk of Court for many
years. Part of those years included the Great Depression
of the 1930s, where Floyd County would pay Kathryn in
script which the local banks would honor after taking a
10 percent discount. She also assisted the Floyd County
Sheriff in escorting female prisoners, and was involved
in the Soldiers and Sailors relief office.
On Dec. 6, 1941, Kathryn was united in marriage to
Boyd G. "Pete" Hayes in Princeton, Miss., The next day
her brother-in-law, John Hayes, was killed on the
battleship Arizona stationed at Pearl Harbor where he is
entombed.
During World War II, Kathryn drove used cars from
Minneapolis, Minn., to Charles City for local car dealer
'Doc' Vollum. After the war, she worked beside her
husband in his law office doing bookkeeping and tax
preparation. She was also the Floyd County Registrar of
births and deaths for many years.
From 1963 to the present she owned and operated
Hayes' Apartments at 201 Ferguson St. in Charles City.
During the Charles City tornado of May 15, 1968, a
building she operated on the corner of Blunt and
Milwaukee streets was totally destroyed, killing two
tenants.
Kathryn was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic
Church. Later, she was confirmed in the Episcopal
Church.
Kathryn was active in the City Improvement
Association and the Republican party. She and her
husband, Boyd, attended the 1952 Republican National
Convention in Chicago, where General Dwight David
Eisenhower was nominated. One of Kathryn's proudest
moments was working with her husband on the passage of
the bond issue for the Floyd County Veterans Memorial
Hospital.
Kathryn enjoyed traveling with her husband, Boyd,
especially their trip to England, and she liked Black
Walnut furniture.
Kathryn was one tough cookie, a classy person with a
sharp mind, and will be sadly missed by her son, John,
cat "Snoopy," sister, Doris Norelius, and brother,
Richard (Mary) Lindaman, all of Charles City, and
brother Robert (Maureen) Lindaman of Green Valley,
Calif. Locally she is survived by nephews, Steve (Becky)
Lindaman and Douglas K. Lindaman, and niece Viva (Bruce)
Boerschel, along with a number of out-of-town nieces and
nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Boyd,
brothers Ben (Hulda) Lindaman, Joe (Elaine) Lindaman,
Jack (Helen) Lindaman and an infant son.
The family wishes to extend a special thanks to Dave

John Jacobs
John A. Jacobs Sr., 87, of Nora Springs, died Sunday
June 9, 2002 at the
Nora Springs Care Center. Funeral services will be
Thursday, June 13, 2002, at 11:00 a.m. at the Rudd
United Methodist Church, with Rev. Terra Amundson
officiating. Interment will be in the Evergreen Cemetery
in Rudd.
Visitation will be today, Wednesday, June 12, from
5-8 p.m. at the Sheckler Colonial Chapel, Nora Springs
with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Family suggests

John was born Dec. 11, 1914, in rural Rudd, the son
of H. Royal and Myrtie (Berk) Jacobs. He graduated from
the Rudd High School in 1934. He was united in marriage
to Leona Lacour Feb. 28, 1940, at the Little Brown
Church, Nashua. They were married for 62 years.
John started his lifelong farming career at Bristow,
later moving to Rudd where they resided until moving to
Nora Springs at Summit Heights Assisted Living in Feb.

He loved nature, caring for his livestock, taking
grandkids for walks and in later years enjoyed reading
books and watching Iowa Hawkeye basketball games. He
lived life to its fullest and enjoyed his family. He was
a life long active member of the Rudd United Methodist
Church and was a 4-H leader for many years.

Esther, Mrs. John Gordon, 81, a resident of 1307
Missouri Avenue,
Charles City, died Monday, June 10, 2002, at the
Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City. Funeral
services for Esther will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday,
June 15, 2002, at Cross Lutheran Church. The Rev. James
Grabitske, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in
Howard Cemetery at Elma.
Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in
Charles City from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 14 and from 9
to 10:30 a.m. Saturday.
Esther Marie Michael Gordon was born March 27, 1921,
at Elma, the daughter of William and Emma Stueber
Michael. She graduated from the Elma High School in
1938. On June 17, 1946, she was united in marriage to
John Gordon in Elma. They moved to Charles City in 1946.
Esther worked as a secretary at Washington School for 23
years. She was a member of Cross Lutheran Church, and
the Big 4 Retired Teachers Association. Esther enjoyed
traveling to Florida, Colorado, and Europe. While
touring in Europe she particularly enjoyed attending the
Passion Play. Esther looked forward to spending time
with her family.
Living family members include her husband, John of
Charles City; a son David Gordon and wife Lori of
Charles City; and a daughter, Carol Laine of
Gainesville, FL; seven grandchildren; a great grandson;
a brother William Michael and wife Gloria of Hillside,
IL; and a sister, Elsie Thies of Sumner.
Two sisters, Alice and Rose Michael preceded her in
death.
Leland Fisher
Leland Everett Fisher, 78, of Nashua, passed away at
Mercy Medical
Center in New Hampton on Tuesday morning, June 11,
2002, of cancer. Funeral services will be held at 10:30
a.m. on Friday, June 14, 2002, at St. John Lutheran
Church with burial in Greenwood Cemetery, both located
in Nashua.
Visitation will be on Thursday, June 13, from 3 to 7
p.m. at the Chenoweth and Son Funeral Home in Nashua and
one hour before time of service at the church on Friday.
Memorials may be directed to North Iowa Hospice in
Charles City.
Leland was born June 18, 1923, in Chickasaw County.
He married Geraldine Austin on Aug. 21, 1953. Leland
served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1950. He retired
from Carnation in Waverly.
He is survied by his four children: Mary Dean of
Nashua, David Fisher of Ionia, Kevin Fisher of
Frederika, and Jeannie Tibbits of Nashua; three
brothers: Lyle and Mark of Nashua and Ben of Charles
City; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine
(Austin) Fisher on February 9, 1971; his parents: Earl
and Mary (Baldwin) Fisher; two sisters: Mona Newton and
Coral Fisher; four brothers: Loyal (Ollie), Edmund,
Donald and Lawrence Fisher.
Dr. Robert Jakoubek
Dr. Robert J. Jakoubek, 57, of Charles City died
Tuesday, June 11, 2002,
at his home. His funeral will be held 10:30 a.m.,
Thursday, June 13, at Immaculate Conception Catholic
Church in Charles City with Msgr. Stanley Hayek
officiating. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery,
Charles City.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m., today,
Wednesday, June 12, at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S.
Main St., Charles City with a vigil of christian burial
at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to
services at the church. Cataldo Funeral Home in Garner
is in charge of arrangements.
Dr. Jakoubek was born September 13, 1944 in Garner,
to John and Rose (Paca) Jakoubek. He was raised on a
farm northeast of Duncan. He attended school in Hayfield
and graduated from Garner-Hayfield High School in 1962.
On July 17, 1965 he was united in marriage to Mary Jane
Hayes at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner. They
made their home in Iowa City while Bob attended the
University of Iowa. Dr. Jakoubek received his Bachelor
of Science degree from the University of Iowa in 1969
and his D.D.S. degree from the University of Iowa
College of Dentistry in 1973. He was in private practice
in Charles City from 1973 until 1996, having to retire
due to a medical condition. He missed his practice and
all of his patients.
In addition to his private practice, Bob's
professional and community activities were numerous. He
has served in all offices of the North Central District
Dental Society, served on the Iowa Dental Association
Council on Dental Health and served as a delegate to
both the IDA and the American Dental Association House
of Delegates. He was a trustee to the IDA Board of
Trustees for six years and served in all offices. He was
president of the Iowa Dental Association for 2000-2001.
He was Dental Representative on the Scope of Practice
Review Committee and was on the Iowa Department of
Public Dental Advisory Council. He also served as chair
of the Iowa Dental Foundation. He was a member of the
Pierre Fauchard Academy; Fellow of the American College
of Dentists; and Fellow of the International College of
Dentists. He was a member of the University of Iowa
College of Dentistry Centennial Club and the University
of Iowa President's Club. Locally, his service included
the Floyd County Board of Health; Charles City Parks and
Recreation Board; Recreational Trail Planning Committee;
Community Revitalization, serving as board chairman;
Charles City Library Board, serving as president; Rotary
Club; United Way Board of Directors; YMCA Board of
Directors; Parents Advisory Board, Charles City
Community Schools; Immaculate Conception Church Parish
Council; Immaculate Conception School Board of
Education, serving as president; Charles City Chamber of
Commerce, serving as an ambassador; and First Citizens
National Bank Board of Directors, Mason City.
Dr. Jakoubek was the recipient of the Rotary
Community Service Award in 1998 and Rotary's Paul Harris
Award in 2002. He received the Main Street Iowa
Volunteer of the Year Award from Community
Revitalization in 1998 and the Iowa Dental Association's
Presidents Award in 1999. Bob loved reading, biking with
Mary Jane, gardening and woodworking with his children
and most especially, playing with his granddaughters.
Dr. Jakoubek is survived by his wife, Mary Jane; his
daughters, Amy Kloberdanz and her husband, Bob, of
Charles City and Kris Jakoubek of Denver, CO; two
granddaughters, Ellie and Kate Kloberdanz; four sisters,
Arlene Wellik of Woden, Marie Formanek of Garner,
Gertrude Wellik and her husband, Leo, of Garner and
Margaret Young and her husband, Paul, of Garner; a
sister-in-law, Sue Bowman and her husband, Jim, of
Geneva, IL; two aunts, Rose Brcka and Blanche Paca; and
several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and
Rose Jakoubek; his parents-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. Frank
Hayes; and two brothers-in-law, Paul Wellik and Leonard
Formanek.
Jack Spence
Jack L. Spence, 58, of 609 N. Jackson Ave., Mason
City, died Saturday, June 15, 2002 at Mercy Hospital
North Iowa.
Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m.,
Tuesday, June 18, 2002, at Fullerton Family of Funeral
Homes, 123 2nd St. SE. Mason City. A Moose funeral rite
will be held at 6 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. A
flag presentation and taps will be conducted by Mason
City Memorial Association following the memorial
service. Cremation was at Cremation Services of North
Iowa.
Gertrude Rodamaker
Gertrude Rodamaker, 86, a resident of 501 8th Avenue,
Charles City, died Wednesday, June 19, 2002, at her
home. Funeral services for Gertrude Rodamaker will be
held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 22, 2002, at the
Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Monsignor Stanley
Hayek, pastor of the Immaculate Conception Catholic
Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary
Cemetery.

a.m. until service time on Saturday, June 22, 2002, with
St. Catherine's Circle reciting the Rosary at 9:30 a.m.
Gertrude Edna Towne Rodamaker was born May 4, 1916,
at Plymouth, the only child of Ralph and Edna (Strunk)
Towne. "Honey", as her family and friends knew her,
later moved to Mason City where she graduated from Mason
City High School in 1934. To quote her high school
yearbook, "A scholar and an athlete a combination hard
to beat". This was a quote Gertrude was always very
proud of. Gertrude was working as a bank teller when she
met Leo P. Rodamaker of Charles City. On February 1,
1936, they were united in marriage. Gertrude was an
accomplished seamstress, an excellent cook, a loving
mother and grandmother, and a devoted wife of 50 years
who cared for her husband through a long illness until
his death in 1986. They had raised registered shorthorn
cattle and owned and operated Rodamaker Feeds, which
Gertrude continued operating until ill health forced her
retirement in 1994.
Living family members include a son, Ralph Rodamaker
and wife Ina Claire of Mill Creek, Wash.; two daughters,
Joanie Mincks of Charles City, and Mary Johnson of Iowa
Falls; 5 grandchildren, Leo Mincks and wife Lisa
(Schluter) of Ames, Marie Mincks of Tokyo, Japan, Roby
Winterink and wife Tara, and Michael Winterink and
fiancˇe Carla Berding of Charles City, and David Johnson
of Iowa Falls; three great grandchildren, Amanda and
Katelynn Winterink, and Michael Thomas Mincks; and her
cat, Calloway.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband in
1986, and a grandson, Jody Leo Winterink.
Marvelyn Pyle
Marvelyn, Mrs. Elden Pyle, 70, a resident of 1906
Owen Street, Charles City, died Thursday, June 20, 2002,
at her home.
Funeral services for Marvelyn Pyle will be held at
10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. John Evangelical Lutheran
Church in Charles City. The Rev. Dennis Niezwaag,
pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside
Memory Gardens rural Charles City.
Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in
Charles City from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday and an hour prior
to the service at the church on Tuesday.
Marvelyn Rice Pyle was born August 15, 1931, in Floyd
County the daughter of Leslie and Blanche (Tolle) Rice.
She graduated from the Colwell High School in 1948. On
Nov. 6, 1948, she married Bernald Venz and they later
divorced. Marvelyn married Arnold Voelker on Nov. 11,
1994, and he died shortly afterwards. It was on June 14,
1995, that she married Elden Pyle at Las Vegas, Nev.
Elden died on April 9, 2001. During her working career,
Marvelyn was employed at White Farm Equipment Company
for 25 years and then for T.C.I. of North Iowa as
manager, retiring in 1992.
Living family members include four daughters, Janice
Morehead and husband Ken of Peoria, Ariz., Connie Benson
of Iowa City, Carman White and husband Bruce of Charles
City, and Diane Jenc and husband Rich of Round Rock,
Texas; eight grandchildren; four great grandchildren;
three step grandchildren; four step great grandchildren;
four sisters, Velma Heck and husband Jim of Laramie,
Wyo., Eunice Green of Mesa, Ariz., Shirley Heinmiller of
Bethalto, Ill.; and Margaret Schwalb and husband Arnie
of Mesa, Ariz.; and a brother-in-law, Glen Pyle and wife
Sue of Charles City.
Her parents, husbands, a great grandson, and a sister
preceded her in death.

ELGIN, Iowa - Graveside services for LaFonda R.
Heins, 79, formerly of Nashua, will be held at 11 a.m.
Monday, June 24, 2002, at the Illyria Cemetery in rural
Elgin. Ms. Heins died on Thursday evening, June 20,
2002, at Maple Crest Manor in Fayette, Iowa, following a
lengthy illness.

James Michael Simpson
CRESCO -- James Michael "Mike" Simpson, 41, of
Cresco, died Saturday, June 22, 2002, at the Regional
Health Services Hospital in Cresco, of an apparent heart
attack. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m.,
Wednesday, June 26, 2002, at the Conway Funeral Home,
with burial in Calvary Cemetery, both at Cresco.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today, June 25.
James Michael Simpson was born on April 28, 1961, in
Houston, Texas, the son of Merle Bruce and Ella (McVay)
Simpson. He attended school in Houston and worked at
various jobs. In 1990, he relocated to Iowa, where two
of his brothers had already moved. He loved this area
because of its great hunting and fishing. Taking Josh
hunting, fishing and camping was his greatest love. He
worked for a short period of time at Featherlite
Trailers and about seven years ago, he started working
as a mechanic at Rick's Repair in Cresco.
Living family members include his special friend and
companion Lori Patterson, and her children, Jesse and
Joshua, of whom he has been a very important part of
their lives for the past eight years; his father, Merle
Simpson of Pasadena, Texas; three brothers, his twin,
Kenneth R. and his wife, Laurie, of Charles City, Joe
Dennis and his friend, Tina Gaubatz of Mason City, Bruce
Allen of Houston, Texas; one sister, Monica Lynn Simpson
of Phoenix, Ariz.; 11 nieces and five nephews.
Mike was preceded in death by his mother, Ella Modine
Simpson.
Robert M. Bryan
Robert Martin Bryan, 85, of Gilroy passed away June
22, 2002. Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 26,
2002, at 1 p.m. at the Habing Family Funeral Home in
Gilroy.
Robert was the oldest of eight children born to
Thomas and Ruth Bryan in Montezuma on March 23, 1917.
Robert graduated from Charles City High School in 1935
and was the doorman at the Charles Theater. He will be
remembered for his trumpet playing.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Nancy
L. and Bob Thombs of Nicholasville, Ky.; six
grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one sister, Betty
Bryan Weiss of Alameda, Calif.; a brother, James Bryan
of Geneva, Ill.; and many friends.
Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Tommy Lou,
his parents, three brothers, two sisters and a son.
Donald Thompson
Donald Thompson, 75, a resident of 807 5th Street,
Charles City, died Sunday, June 23, 2002, at the
Salsbury Baptist Home in Charles City.
There will be no funeral services per Donald's
request.
The Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City is in charge
of arrangements.
Donald Clifton Thompson was born December 20, 1926,
at Charles City, the son of John and Ina (White)
Thompson. Part of his early schooling was in Des Moines.
After his father's death in 1938 the family moved back
to Charles City where he attended McKinley School and
Charles City High School through the 11th grade when he
joined the Merchant Marines, serving from 1944 to 1947.
He then came home and finished his schooling. During the
Korean Conflict he was drafted into the United States
Army and served in Germany. Donald spent over 40 years
in California, returning to Charles City in September of
1997 where he lived at the Starr Home until February of
this year when he moved to the Salsbury Baptist Home.
He will be sadly missed by his two sisters, Dorothy
Ward and Virginia Thompson both of Charles City; and
four brothers, John Thompson of St. Paul, Minn., Robert
Thompson and wife Darlene of Jesup, Gordon Thompson of
Mason City and Douglas Thompson of Berea, Ohio.
His parents, a sister, Winnifred Zierath, a brother,
Russell Thompson, two sister-in-laws, and a niece
preceded him in death.

Kevin Robert Hepperly, 25, of Charles City, died
Tuesday, June 25, 2002, at Mercy Medical Center North
Iowa.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 am on Friday,

follow at 1:30 pm on Friday at Elmwood St. Joseph

Esther A. Erickson, 93, formerly of 1304 S. Main #1,
Charles City, died Thursday, June 27, 2002, at Salsbury
Baptist Home. Funeral services will be held at 10:30
a.m., Monday, July 1, 2002, at St. John Evangelical
Lutheran Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Dennis
Niezwaag and Wayne Weissenbuehler. Interment will be at

Maynard Steere
GREENE - Funeral services for Maynard R. Steere, 75,
of 19358 135th Street, Greene, will be today, July 2,
2002, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter Lutheran Church in
Greene with Pastor Mark Walker officiating. Burial will
be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene with Military
rites conducted by Tack Barnett Post 268 American Legion
of Greene officiating.
Visitation was held, Monday, July 1, 2002, at Reid's
Funeral Chapel in Greene, and will continue at the
church one hour prior to services.
Maynard Ray Steere was born April 28, 1927, on the
family farm in Coldwater Township, Butler County, a son
of Albert William and Mabel Caroline (Martzahn) Steere.
He died Saturday, June 29, 2002, at the North Iowa Mercy
Medical Center from complications of a stroke.
Maynard was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter
Lutheran Church in Greene, and received his education in
the Coldwater No. 5 Country School. He graduated from
the Greene High School in 1945.
Maynard has farmed in rural Greene his entire life
with the exception of the time he served in the United
States Army during the Korean Conflict. For several
years he was engaged in feeding cattle and in later
years raised chickens, packed eggs, and delivered them.
He enjoyed pheasant hunting, reading the newspaper,
and playing cards. He served on the St. Peter Lutheran
Church Council for several years.
Living family members include his brother Verle of
Greene; three sisters: Hilda and her husband Wendell
Michael of Waverly, Lorene and her husband Willard Wolf
of Charles City, Bernice and her husband Paul Wolf of
Greene, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

John Kellner
IONIA - John Joseph Kellner, 74, of 3080 Fayette
Avenue, Ionia, died Sunday afternoon, June 30, 2002,
after spending a day and a half at the 9th Street
Chautauqua Guest Home, of congestive heart failure.
Prior to this, he had been a patient for ten days at
Mercy Hospital in Des Moines. Funeral services will be
held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 3, 2002, at the
United Methodist Church in Nashua. Officiating will be
Pastor Marion Sindt. Burial will be in the Greenwood
Cemetery in Nashua.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. today,
Tuesday, July 2, 2002, at Chenoweth and Son Funeral
Home, Nashua, and again one hour before services at the
church.
John Joseph Kellner was born to John C. and Dorothy
(Hicks) Kellner on December 13, 1927, at the present
farm house in which he has lived his entire life. He was
educated at the McGregor Country School, rural Nashua,
through 8th Grade and graduated from Nashua High School
in 1945. Following graduation, John farmed on the family
farm in the Republic area until retiring in 1992. He was
baptized and confirmed at St. Johns Lutheran Church in
Nashua in 1942.
John was united in marriage to Lorraine Rogers of
Greene on September 23, 1956, at the United Methodist
Church in Greene, and to this union five children were
born: Leroy, Diane, Craig, Charles, and Cindy. John and
Lorraine recently celebrated last fall their 45th
wedding anniversary with a dance and reception at the
Moose Lodge in Charles City.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church of
Nashua, Moose Lodge #1011 Chapter 1095 of Charles City
and Polka Club of Iowa. John served on the Chickasaw
County Pork Producers, Bremer County D.H.I.A., Chickasaw
County Landfill, and the Chickasaw County Farm Bureau.
John enjoyed roller skating as an amateur in his
younger years. He enjoyed and loved his registered
Holstein dairy herd. He also enjoyed dancing for many
years at the Riviera Ballroom in Janesville, playing
cards, and spending time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Lorraine; two sons: Leroy
of Charles City and Charles of Ionia; two daughters:
Diane (James) Oltmann of Grimes and Cindy Kellner of
Waterloo; a daughter-in-law, Ruth Kellner Swinton of
Nashua; a mother-in-law, Iva Rogers of Waverly; five
grandchildren: Jimmy and Jamie Oltmann of Grimes,
Stacia, Krista and Austin Kellner of Nashua; two
sisters: Gerry (Stanley) Busching of Plainfield and
Margaret Wright of Ionia.
He was preceded in death by his son, Craig Kellner on
April 12, 1999; his parents, John and Dorothy Kellner;
his father-in-law, Burr Rogers; and a brother, Robert in
1934. |
