Clayton 'Buff' Bill RICEVILLE - Clayton 'Buff'
Bill, age 44, of Morristown, Minn., passed away on July
2, 2002, at his residence after an extended illness.
Funeral services will be held at the Immaculate
Conception Catholic Church in Riceville on Saturday,
July 6, 2002, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Ray E. Atwood
officiating. Military rites will be conducted by the
American Legion - Roy Gue Post 244. Burial will be in
the Sunnyside Cemetery in Charles City. Friends may call
at the Lindstrom Funeral home in Riceville today, July
5, during the hours of 4-8 p.m. and the morning of the
services at the funeral home.
Clayton Dean Bill, son of Harvey and Dorothy Chambers
Bill, was born Sept. 25, 1957, in Charles City. He
married Debra Renae Morrell on Jan. 3, 1991, in Cresco.
He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Army. He was
a mechanic.
Survivors include his wife Debra of Morristown,
Minn.; two sons: Anthony Bill of Burnsville, Minn. and
Harvey Bill of Morristown, Minn.; a daughter Amy Bill of
Houston, Texas; a step-daughter Randi and her husband,
Russell Bill, of Morristown, Minn.; three grandchildren;
Samantha, Carrie and Jennifer Bill, all of Morristown,
Minn.; his mother, Dorothy Bill of Riceville; eight
sisters: Nancy Grimm and her husband, Ronald of
Riceville; Judy McMaster and her husband, Thomas, of
Riceville; Janice Runnion and her husband, Virgil, of
Spencer, W.V.; Mary Olson and her husband, Wayne, of
Cresco; Tammy Loecher and her husband, John, of Adams,
Minn.; Sandy Runde and her husband, Dean, of LeRoy,
Minn.; Vickie Roethler and her husband, Lowell, of
Algona; and Linda Levorson and her husband, Keith, of
Riceville; and four brothers: Larry Bill and his wife,
Dorothy, of Hampton; Kenneth Bill and his wife, Diane,
of LeRoy, Minn.; Roy Bill and his wife, Joyce, of
Charles City; and Russell Bill and his wife, Randi, of
Morristown, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his father and two
brothers, David and Jesse.
Mary I. Henniges
CIRCLEVILLE, Ohio - Mary Henniges, 94, formerly of
Waverly, died July 4, 2002 in Circleville, Ohio. She was
born Aug. 24, 1907 in Bremer County to Ed and Minnie
(Briggs) Zwanziger.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, July 11 at
the Chenoweth & Son Funeral Home in Nashua with Pastor
Linda Myren officiating. Visitation will be from 10 - 11
a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Internment will be
private at the Sunnyside Memory Gardens in Charles City.
Mary taught school, was a graduate of Gates Business
College in Waterloo, worked as a secretary at the State
Hospital in Independence, taught Sunday School and was a
life-long homemaker, mother, grandmother and great
grandmother.
Mary is survived by two daughters: Ramona (James)
Edman of Circleville and Marilyn Cotton of Fountain
Hills, Ariz.; two sisters; Nellie Oberheu of Plainfield
and Nettie Dietz of Nashua; four grandchildren: Steven,
Kristine and David Edman and Sara Cotton; three
great-grandchildren: Joel Edman, Bailey Cotton and Grace
Ratkey and many nieces and nephews with special nieces:
Jeanette Schluter and Norma Biekert, both of Nashua.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond; a
sister, Ruth Hansen and a brother, Edward Zwanziger.

OSAGE - Marvel A. Lesch, age 87, of Osage and
Waterloo, died Thursday, July 4, 2002, at the Mitchell
County Regional Health Center in Osage. Funeral services
will be held at 11 a.m. today, Monday, July 8, 2002, at
Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Osage with the Rev.
Dennis Hanson officiating. Interment will be in the
Osage Cemetery.

Cletus P. Staudt
Cletus P. Staudt, 55, of 2405 Indigo Ave., died
Thursday July 4, 2002 at the Muse Norris Hospice
Inpatient Unit, Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday
July 8, 2002 at the St. Mary's Catholic Church,
Roseville, with the Monsignor Walter Brunken
officiating. Interment will follow in the St. Mary's
Catholic Church Cemetery.
Cletus was born August 29, 1946 the son of Clement
and Susan (Zeien) Staudt in Charles City. Cletus later
graduated from Rudd-Rockford-Marble Rock and continued
his education at Iowa State were he later graduated.
On August 18, 1966 Cletus was united in marriage to
Susan Ryner in Rockford.
Cletus enjoyed helping others, whether it was through
singing for the River City Barbershop Quartet and the
St. Mary's Catholic Church Choir or holding an active
role on committees such as the Floyd Co. Hospital Board,
the R-R-MR School Board, the Marble Rock Elevator Board,
the River City Barbershop Board and he coached Little
League Baseball. He was a member of the St. Mary's
Catholic Church. Cletus's greatest joy in life was
spending time with his family and grandchildren.
Those thankful for having shared in Cletus' life
include his wife Susan, three sons; Scott Staudt and his
wife, Jolene, of Osceola, Kyle Staudt and his wife
Jessica of Waterloo, Neb., and Troy Staudt and his
fiancee, Jana McBride, of Bellevue, one sister; Sister
Marjorie Staudt of Pocahontas, one brother; Dennis
Staudt and his wife, Patty, of Marble Rock, and three
grandchildren; Garrett, Alyssa, and Grant Staudt.
Mr. Staudt was preceded in death by his parents, one
brother Vince Staudt, and one grandson, Drew Lensing.
Jackie Johanns
OSAGE - Jackie Jean Johanns, age 17, of Osage, died
Friday, July 5, 2002, at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa
in Mason City of injuries she received in an auto
accident. She was born in Osage on March 13, 1985, the
daughter of Tim Johanns and Nancy (Brooker) Milbrandt.
Jackie was a student at the Osage High School. She
enjoyed music, writing poems and being with her friends.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday,
July 9, 2002, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage
with the Rev. Philip Recker officiating. Interment will
be in the St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery in New Haven.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Monday at the Champion
- Bucheit Funeral Home, 702 State St. in Osage where
there will be an Scripture Service at 8:00 p.m., and one
hour before services at the church.
Jackie is survived by her father, Tim Johanns of
Osage; mother, Nancy Milbrandt and her husband, Mark, of
Osage; a sister, Jessie Johanns of Osage; two brothers,
Jeremie Johanns of Minneapolis, Minn., and Taylor
Johanns of Russell, Iowa; paternal grandmother, Bonnie

Jackie is preceded in death by her paternal

Carrie C. Slinger
Carrie C. Slinger, 94, of Salsbury Baptist Home,
formerly of 202 15th
Ave., died Wednesday July 10, 2002, at the Floyd
County Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be held
at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, July 13, 2002, at St. John
Evangelical Lutheran Church. Officiating will be the
Rev. Dennis Niezwaag.
Visitation will be from 4 until 8 p.m. Friday, July
12, 2002, at Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St.,
and again one hour prior to services at the church.
Interment will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens Cemetery,
Charles City.
Carrie was born June 19, 1908, in Withee, Wisc.,
daughter of John Melbinger and Anna (Horn) Melbinger. On
Sept. 15, 1928, she was united in marriage to Harold
Wiltse in Bradley, S.D., where in 1932 Harold passed
away. She was then reunited in marriage to Harold
Slinger on Aug. 15, 1936, where Carrie and Harold began
there life together in Charles City. Harold Slinger
passed away in 1984. She resided in Charles City for the
past 66 years. She was owner of the Red Rooster
Restaurant, as well as a housewife. She was a member of
the St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church. Carrie enjoyed
her crossword puzzles in the Register, and playing
cards. Carrie's main interest however, was her family;
even the many miles to Colorado was not far enough to
separate Carrie from the comfort of her family.
Carrie is survived by four daughters; Patricia
McCauley, and her husband, Eugene, of Charles City,
Marilyn (Tootie) Kolb, and her husband, Harlyn, of
Charles City, Joyce Wittlike, and her husband, Ted, of
Yuma, Colo., Lois Heddens, and her husband, Ralph, of
Charles City; two sons; Jack Slinger, and his wife,
Zella, of Charles City, Terry Slinger, and his wife
Sandra, of Charles City; sister-in-law, Mae Melbinger;
uncle, Bart Horn; 18 grandchildren; 28
great-grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren.
Carrie was preceded in death by her parents, two
husbands; Harold Wiltse, Harold Slinger; two brothers;
Rodney and Ambros Melbinger; one grandson; Mark Allen
Christensen.

James A. McNeilus
MARBLE ROCK - James A. McNeilus, 91, of 121 South
Main Street,
Marble Rock, died Thursday, July 11, 2002 at the
Faith Lutheran Home in Osage. Funeral services will be
at 10 a.m. today, July 15, 2002, at Reid's Funeral
Chapel in Greene with Pastor Mike Carey of the United
Methodist Church of Riceville officiating. Burial will
be in the Westside Cemetery in Marble Rock. Following
committal services there will be a lunch served at the
Marble Rock United Methodist Church.
Visitation will be was from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday and
will be one hour prior to services today at Reid's
Funeral Chapel in Greene.
James Andrew McNeilus was born Aug.19, 1910, in rural
Butler County, north of Bristow, a son of William A. and
Ethel McNeilus. He received his education from the
Bristow High School graduating in 1928 and attended
Gates Business College. James worked at Chamberlain
Machine Works in Waterloo for two years. During the
Depression he rode the rails, baled hay on the prairies
of Oklahoma, and drove caterpillar tractors on a Gravel
Gang in the Dakotas.
On March 4, 1936, he was united in marriage to Violet
S. Dralle at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church at
Vilmar. They were blessed with four daughters, four
sons, 18 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. They
made a living in farming and masonry construction.
James and Violet moved to the town of Marble Rock in
1968. His great love and admiration for this small town,
nestled above the Shell Rock River, gave him inspiration
to help keep it alive and well. He was instrumental in
obtaining the Old Bank Building for historical
contributions and has been one of its greatest
contributors. He built seven new homes and remodeled
several others. Jim did masonry work on the Methodist
and Lutheran Churches as well as new fronts on several
town buildings. He built the steps on both sides of the
river bridge and oversaw the stone wall construction at
the Power House site. He also built the fireplace at the
local Scout Camp Field House of native limestone and
participated with others in restoring tombstones in the
two Marble Rock cemeteries.
He has published three books and was the Floyd County
Civil Defense Director from 1965 to 1975. He enjoyed
discussing politics and religion and was well known for
his love of the game of checkers. James was featured on
Paul Harvey in February of this year as the story of the
Checkers Champ traveled far and wide.
James is survived by four daughters: Marlene Noack of
Cedar Falls, Marilyn and David Myers of Grand Rapids,
Mich., Marjorie Tjebkes of Charles City, Marsha and John
Counsell of Riceville; four sons, Jim and Deb McNeilus
of Charles City, Larry and Debbie McNeilus of Sullivan,
Ill., Dale and Cindy McNeilus of Sleepy Hollow, Ill.,
Harlan McNeilus of Colorado Springs, Colo.; three
sisters and one sister-in-law, Laura and Gene Olson of
Arizona, Ardith and Orville Fox of Waverly, Aleece and
Bill Beetle of Bristow, Marian McNeilus (widow of Floyd)
of Waverly; 18 grandchildren; and 17
great-grandchildren.
James was preceded in death by his wife Violet Dralle
McNeilus; his parents, William A. and Ethel McNeilus;
two brothers, Archie and Floyd McNeilus; one sister,
Gladys McNeilus; one son-in-law, Virgil Noack; one
grandchild, Christina McNeilus.

Arnold A. Hill Arnold Albert Hill, 67, of 806 North
Grand, Charles City, died Thursday, July 11, 2002, at
his residence. Graveside services will be held at 10
a.m. Wednesday, July 17, 2002, at Sunnyside Memory
Gardens, Charles City. There will be no visitation.
Arnold was born January 13, 1935, the son of Vern and
Ruby L. (Thompson) Hill in New Hampton. He graduated
from Fredericka High School. Arnold enjoyed watching
baseball and Hawkeye Basketball. He was also an avid
reader.
Arnold is survived by two sons; Paul Hill of
Waterloo, and Lewis Hill and his wife Brenda of Cedar
Falls, three grandchildren; Trenton Wion, Lou Ann Hill,
and Kristina Hill, and his ex-wife Pauline Merrill of
Waterloo.
Mr. Hill was preceded in death by his parents, two
wives, Faye Ploeger Hill and Angie Hill, two aunts, and
three uncles.

Josephine Turner
Josephine (Mrs. Robert) Turner, 88, a resident of 205
Oliver Street, Charles City, died Tuesday, July 16,
2002, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles
City. Funeral services for Josephine Turner will be held
at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 19,2002, at Trinity United
Methodist Church. The Rev. Paul Wilcox, pastor, will
officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery at
Charles City.
Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in
Charles City from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, and an hour
prior to the services at the church on Friday.
Josephine Louise Nehls Turner was born March 28,
1914, in Floyd County, the daughter of Benjamin and Tina
(Katcher) Nehls. She graduated from the Charles City
High School. On April 1, 1939, Josephine was united in
marriage to Robert Turner at Charles City. She worked
for many years at J.C. Penny and Ben Franklin. Josephine
was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, United
Methodist Women-Grace Group, had taught Sunday school,
Midi's, Senior Citizens, Heritage Club, McKinley
Homecraft Club, various card clubs, and had been a Den
Mother. She enjoyed, gardening, fishing, sewing,
crafting, and playing cards.
Living family members include her husband, Bob of
Charles City; two sons and their wives, Don and Janie
Turner of Hot Springs Village, Ark., and Roger and Karen
Turner of Cedar Rapids; three granddaughters, Valerie
Sistern, Becky Horn, and Ami Turner; two great
grandsons; three step grandchildren, Lori Grofthoff, and
George and Ben Goudy, a brother, Richard Nehls of
Anchorage, Alaska; and a sister, Helen McSwain of San
Diego, Calif.
Her parents, a son, "Bobby Joe," and two brothers
preceded her in death.
The family suggests memorials be directed to Hospice
of North Iowa Charles City site.
Luella Burnett
Luella C Burnett, 94, of Rudd died Wednesday (July
17,2002) at the Nora Springs Care Center in Nora
Springs.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at
the United Methodist Church, 611 6th St. in Rudd, with
the Rev. Lisa Locoh and the Rev. Cecil Lackore
officiating. Interment will follow at the Evergreen
Cemetery in Rudd.
Visitation will be on Sunday from 3-6 p.m. at the
Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 North Hawkeye St., Nora
Springs and one hour before the service at the church.
There will be a prayer service at the funeral home at
5:00 p.m. on Sunday.

made to the Rudd United Methodist Church.
Luella C. Kling was born in Rock Grove Township in
Floyd County on March 30, 1908 to Louis and Anna
(Brandau) Kling. She was baptized on May 10, 1908 at the
German Zion ME Church.
She attended Rock Grove and Rudd Township schools and
graduated from the Rudd High School in 1925. Luella
attended Iowa State Teachers College for one year and
then started teaching at the Rudd Township School
District #7 in 1926. On June 16, 1929 Luella married
Grandon Burnett at the Rudd United Methodist Church
parsonage.Also in 1929 she started teaching in School
District #5 and was there until 1933 at which time she
became a Homemaker.
Luella has been a member of the Rudd United Methodist
Church since August 30, 1925 and was active in the
United Methodist Women, Dorcas Circle, and taught Sunday
school for 27 years. She also belonged to the Rudd
Culture Club, Royal Neighbors of America, Rudd Senior
Citizens (Jolly Rudd'rs), and the Woman's Society.
Luella was very proud of the Issac Walton State Award
she received for a windbreak she had planted.
Luella is survived by three sons: L. Boyd Burnett and
his wife Louise of Rudd, Duane Burnett and his wife
Shirley of Rudd, and Rodney L. Burnett and his wife
Marge of Ankeny, seven grandchildren: Dan Burnett and
his wife Becky, Carolyn Ewen and her husband Don, Alan
Burnett and his wife Amy, Jeanie Burnett, Brad Burnett
and his wife Darcy, Julie Liggett and her husband Steve,
and Sara Kobe and her husband Jack, Twelve
great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband
Grandon in 1965, two brothers: Herman Kling and Alvin
Kling, and a sister Katie Apel.
Jean Laurie Meyer
MASON CITY - Jean Laurie Meyer, 72, of 503 North
Joslin St., Charles City, died Thursday, July 18, 2002
at Mercy Medical Center--North Iowa, in Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on
Monday, July 22 at the First Wesleyan Church, 913 South
Main in Charles City with the Rev. Ted Clark
officiating. Interment will follow in Riverside
Cemetery.
Jean was born Jan. 8, 1930, the daughter of Mark and
Gladys (Swann) Ferguson in Hinsdale, Ill. The family
moved to Charles City in 1935 where Jean was raised and
attended school. She graduated from Charles City High
School in 1948. On Aug. 27, 1950 Jean was united in
marriage to Robert Charles Meyer in Charles City. To
this union two daughters were born.
Jean was a very active, generous and take-charge
person who enjoyed being involved in different clubs and
groups. She was active in the Floyd County Court House
Retirees Group, Christian Women's Club and volunteered
at the River of Live Christian School.
Jean was an avid reader and a collector of Dickens
Village pieces. She would normally set her village up in
November and invite people to come and see it. She would
begin the dismantling process in April.
Jean enjoyed visiting with family and friends, music,
doing crossword puzzles, watching professional football
and tending to her two cats, Teddy and Hannah. Jean was
a very efficient person who enjoyed sewing. She had sewn
her daughter's wedding dress and her granddaughter's
prom dresses. Jean's most precious time was spent with
her family, especially her children and grandchildren.
Jean was the church treasurer for many years at the
First Christian Church.
Those thankful for having shared in Jean's life
include her daughters; Laurie Jean Cocking and her
husband, Kent, of Marshalltown, and Nancy Marie Meyer of
Fargo, ND, two sisters; Lila Feltus and her husband,
Willard, of Charles City, and Helen Bullen of Iowa
Falls, three grandchildren; Kristin Cooper and her
husband, Jeremy, Aaron Cocking and his wife, Kristie,
and Shane Cocking.
Mrs. Meyer was preceded in death by her parents and
husband Robert.

CHARLES CITY - Herman Adam August Zimmerman, 86, of
509 8th Ave., Charles City, died Friday, July 19, 2002
at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday,
July 23, 2002 at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in
Charles City with the Rev. Dennis Niezwaag officiating.
Interment will follow in the Riverside Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 until 8 p.m. with the
family present from 5 until 7 p.m. Monday at Fullerton
Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City.
Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at
the church on Tuesday.
Herman Adam August Zimmerman was born March 16, 1916,
in rural Burt to Klaas and Mary Rath Zimmerman. On April
30, 1916 he was baptized at the Lutheran Church in Lotts
Creek. After the family moved to the Rockford area he
attended the rural schools.
In 1930 Herman was confirmed at the Zion American
Lutheran Church in Rockford by Pastor Bredow. The family
moved north of Charles City in 1936 where their father
passed away at an early age. The family continued
farming northeast of Charles City.
On Feb. 27, 1943, Herman was united in marriage to
Savera Renata Ross at St. John Evangelical Lutheran
Church in Charles City by Rev. Walter Fritschel.
He continued to farm, and in 1963 went to work for
Jacobs Elevator in Charles City. In 1995 after retiring
they moved to Charles City.
Herman is survived by his wife, Savera, two
daughters; Karen Weber and her husband, Jim, of
Gladstone, Mo., and Marlene Zimmerman of Richfield,
Minn., two grandchildren; Pam Bledsoe and Mark Weber of
Kansas City, Mo., one great granddaughter; Ali Nicole
Bledsoe, three sisters; Emma Mohring and Esther Meyne,
both of Charles City, and Mary Ann Steenhard of Waverly
and one brother Emil Zimmerman of Lansing.

RICEVILLE - Ellwood Merle Pettitt, 64, of Riceville,
passed away Sunday, July 21, 2002, at the Baum Harmon
Mercy Hospital in Primghar from a heart attack. A
memorial service will be held at the Riceville United
Methodist Church in Riceville on Sunday, Aug. 4, 2002,
at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Michael Carey officiating.
Internment will be in Riverside Cemetery following the
memorial service where military honors will be performed

Merlyn L. Townsend
BELMOND - Merlyn L. Townsend, 82, of Belmond passed
away Sunday, July 21, 2002, at his home in Belmond after
suffering from heart ailments. Funeral services will be
held at 10:30 a.m. today, Wednesday, July 24, 2002 at
the United Church of Christ Congregational in Belmond
with Rev. Lynne Spencer-Smith officiating. Burial will
take place in the Evergreen Cemetery, rural Rudd at 2:30
p.m. today, July 24. Visitation was held Tuesday, July
23 at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home in Belmond and will
continue one hour prior to services at the church today.
Merlyn, the son of Harold and Gladys (Noah) Townsend,
was born March 29, 1920, in Charles City. He grew up and
attended school in the Floyd County area. Prior to
entering the Army, he was employed as a welder with
Oliver Tractor Company in Charles City and later Walsh
Manufacturing, also of Charles City. He was inducted
into the United States Army at Camp Dodge on Jan. 16,
1943. He served with the 563rd Engineers Boat
Maintenance Battalion as a diesel mechanic and also a
rifle marksman, Tech 4. He was discharged from the Army
on Dec. 29, 1945. Following his discharged, Merlyn lived
in California for a time before returning to Charles
City to farm with his father.
Merlyn was united in marriage with Viola Blunt Uker
on Sept. 17, 1949, in Yankton, S.D. To this union one
daughter, Carol, was born. Following their marriage, the
couple lived and farmed in the Floyd Count region.
Merlyn and Viola moved to Belmond in the spring of 1961.
He raised capons and was known as the largest capon
grower in the state of Iowa. He retired from the poultry
business in March of 1982. He enjoyed playing cards with
Vi and friends. He loved to fish and hunt and would
often take the camper and boat to Lake Okoboji or Lake
Cornelia. He was a great kidder and really enjoyed his
grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was a member of
the United Church of Christ Congregational.
Living family members include his wife of 52 years,
Vi of Belmond; two daughters and their families, Carol
Steenblock and her husband, Bob of Belmond and their
children, Ryan Steenblock and his wife, Arianne of
Panora and Rusty Steenblock and friend, Crystle Asmus of
Alexander and Janet Smith of Omaha, Neb. and her
children, Debbie Zarybnicky and her husband, Dale of
Austin, Texas, Jerry Smith and his wife, Susan of
Weeping Waters, Neb., Cheryl Wickwire and her husband,
Jim of Charles City and Kevin Uker and his wife, Linda
of Tucson, Ariz.; several great-grandchildren; two
brothers, Noah Townsend of Charles City and Barton
Townsend of Charles City; sister-in-law Doris Townsend
of Rawlins, Wyo., and many nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons,
Gary Townsend and Don Uker; sister, Naomi Brooks; and a
brother, Marvin Townsend.
John Roby Hilpert
FORT MADISON - John Roby Hilpert, 85, of Fort Madison
died Tuesday, July 23, 2002, at the Fort Madison
Community Hospital. Services will take place at 2 p.m.
Thursday, July 25, 2002, at the Barr Memorial Chapel in
Fort Madison with the Revs. Gerald Hoenig and Bill
Willis officiating. Friends may call after 1 p.m. today,
Wednesday, July 24, 2002, at the Barr Memorial Chapel,
where the family will meet friends from 7-8 p.m. Mr.
Hilpert's body will be cremated following funeral
services with burial of his remains to be held at a
later date at the Troy Cemetery.
John was born Feb. 8, 1917 in Troy to Frank Robert
Hilpert and Esta Lou (Roby) Hilpert. He married Frances
Marie (Newton) Hilpert June 18, 1938 in Bloomfield.
Living family members include two daughters, Mrs. Jon
L. (Elaine Ann) Ploss of Highland Center, Mrs. Craig M.
(Mary Catherine "Cathy") Blanchard, of Charles City;
four grandchildren, Michelle, Dianne, Laura and Andrea;
one great-granddaughter, Krystal-Anne.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother,
Dr. Fern Robert Hilpert and one daughter, Frances
Roberta Witte.
A memorial has been established for the First United
Methodist Church or the Lee County Health Department
Hospice. Contributions may be made at the Barr Memorial
Chapel.

Fern C. Matson
BELMOND - Fern C. Matson, 93, most recently a
resident of Belmond, formerly of the Mason City and
Charles City area, died Friday, July 26, 2002 at the
Belmond Health Center in Belmond.
Funeral services will be held Monday, July 29, 2002
at the Tenold-Andrews Funeral Home, 516 1st Street S.E.,
in Belmond at 11 a.m. The Reverend Michael Druhl of
Belmond United Methodist Church will officiate.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the services at the
funeral home. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in
Charles City. Committal services will be at 2:45 p.m. at
the cemetery.
Fern Cecelia Bennett was born Sept. 3, 1908 in
Charles City, the daughter of Edward R. W. and Nettie
(Fitkin) Bennett. She graduated from Charles City High
School. Fern was united in marriage to Louis George
Matson on Aug. 7, 1929, at Mason City. Following their
marriage the couple moved to Long Beach, Calif. After a
few years the couple moved back to Iowa and settled in
Charles City. Fern and Louis had two children, Sharon
and Ron.
The couple had enjoyed traveling, playing cards and
spending free time with their family. Fern was also very
active in Rainbow and Sunshine Girls. She also enjoyed
making afghans for family and friends.
Following her husband's death, Fern moved to Mason
City where she resided for many years. There she worked
for Dr. Johnston's Orthodontics. She very much enjoyed
activities that included others. Fern was a long-time
volunteer at Mercy Hospital in Mason City and a member
of the YWCA and United Methodist Church.
She loved to spend time with her grandchildren and
enjoyed having them stay with her from time to time. In
1992, Fern moved to the Belmond Retirement Center where
she made her home for seven years before becoming a
resident of the Belmond Health Care Center at age 90.
She loved being out-and-about with all the other
residents. In her own little ways she was funny and
always had people laughing.
Those left to cherish the memory of her life include
her daughter; Sharon and husband, Larry Kinseth, of
Belmond, and son; Ron and wife, Dixie Matson, of Windsor
Hgts., Des Moines. Also surviving are her grandchildren:
Tamera Dorr, Baltimore, Md.; Dawn and husband, Rob
Breza, and their children, Parker and Cassandra, all of
Chanhassen, Minn.; Teresa Matson of Minneapolis, Minn.;
and Lori Cekoric and husband, Brian, and their son,
Nathan, all of Portland, Ore. Three step-grandchildren:
Rick Kinseth, Laurie Steenblock and Kim Kuester, all of
Belmond; and eight step-great grandchildren. Also
surviving are several nieces and nephews.
Fern was preceded in death by her parents, husband
Lewis in 1965, and seven brothers and sisters. The
family suggests memorials to the Belmond United
Methodist Church.

Marvin F. Bruns
GREENE - Marvin F. Bruns, 87, of 201 North Fourth
Street, Greene, died Saturday, July 27, 2002 at the
Liebe Care Center in Greene. Funeral services will be
10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 30, at St. Peter Lutheran
Church in Greene with Pastor Gary Hatcher officiating.
Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Reid's
Funeral Chapel in Greene where there will be a public
scripture service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue
on Tuesday one hour prior to the service.
Marvin Francis Bruns was born July 8, 1915 in rural
Scott Township in Floyd County, a son of Herman and
Martha (Abendroth) Bruns. He was baptized Aug. 22, 1915
at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene. He received his
education in Floyd and Butler County Schools. Martin
affirmed his faith on May 19, 1929 at St. Peter Lutheran
Church.
On Dec.11 1938 he was united in marriage to Rosamond
Sophia Dralle at St. John Ev. Lutheran Church at Vilmar.
During the Depression he worked for area farmers for a
dollar a day.
In 1935 he purchased a portable feed grinder that he
operated until he started farming in 1939. He farmed
southwest of Greene and was the Trojan Seed Dealer until
his retirement in 1979. They moved to their new home in
Greene in 1989.
Marvin and Rosamond were members of St. John Ev.
Lutheran Church at Vilmar, where he served on the Church
Council and was Chairman of the Congregation. After
moving to Greene they became members of St. Peter
Lutheran Church. Marvin served two terms on the Board of
Directors of the Farmers Coop Elevator of Greene and
nine years as the school director of Coldwater No. 9.
He enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
Marvin had a great love for nature and had many
memorable fishing trips to Canada. He spent countless
number of hours making gifts out of wood, which he loved
giving to his family and others.
Those thankful for sharing his life include his
loving wife of 63 years, Rosamond; three daughters and
their spouses: Virginia and Don Feldman, Sandra and Gene
Ross and Judy and John Oiser all of Greene; 10
grandchildren: Robin (Duane) Majewski, Troy (Teresa)
Feldman, Tim (Maria) Feldman, Todd (Teri) Ross, Traci
(David) Zvokel, Tara Ross, Jon Osier, Jan (Tom) Muench,
Jill Osier and Jess Osier; 12 great grandchildren; Tyler
and Melissa Majewski, Lisa and Jared Feldman, Brady,
Kelsey and Megan Feldman, Nicholas and Carter Ross,
Christian and Kinsey Zvokel and Dante Ross; one brother:
Dale and his wife, Minnie Bruns, of Greene and several
nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister: Edna
Akin; one brother in infancy and a great grandson,
Anthony Ross.

Theresa L. Hauer, 55, of Albert Lea, died Sunday,
July 28, 2002, at her home. Funeral services will be
held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 1, 2002, at Our Father's
House Church, Hwy. 69 South (2 miles south of Wal-Mart).
Pastor Kip Jentoft will officiate. Interment will be in
Graceland Cemetery.

Theresa L. Hauer was born January 21, 1947, to John
and Loretta (Kelley) Ruzicka in Hampton. She was raised
by Albert and Helen Shindelar. Theresa attended St.
Aloysius Grade School in Calmar, DeSalles High School in
Ossian, and Viterbo College in LaCrosse, Wis. On Dec.
29, 1969, she was united in marriage to Darrel R. Hauer
in Calmar. The couple moved to Albert Lea in 1985.
Theresa was co-owner of Desktop Media, Inc. She was a
member of Our Father's House Church.
Theresa is survived by her husband Darrel; two sons,
Corey M. Hauer and his friend Denise Duncan, both of
Albert Lea, and Eric J. Hauer and his wife Sunila of
Deerfield, Ill.; three brothers, John (Jack) Ruzicka and
his wife Virginia of Marble Rock, Bill Ruzicka and his
wife Penny of Nashua, and James Ruzicka and his wife
Mary of Marble Rock; from the family she was raised by:
sisters Marie Tieskoetter and Gertie Holtaus, both of
Ossian, and Helen Zbornik and her husband Adrian of Fort
Atkinson; and three brothers, Richard Shindelar and his
wife Joyce of Calmar, Joe Schindelar and his wife Arlene
of LeClaire, and Aloysius Shindelar and his wife Fran of

Thomas Edw Batty
Thomas Edw Batty, 95, a resident of Simpson Memorial
Home, West
Liberty, formerly of Rockford, died Monday, July 29,
2002, following a short illness. Graveside services will
be held at a later date. The body was cremated. The
Cremation Society of Eastern Iowa is in charge of the
arrangements.
Thomas Edw Batty was born July 10, 1907, in Gross,
Neb. He married Frances Munshower on June 17, 1937, in
Rockford. He was a graduate of the University of Iowa in
1933 and served with the Army in World War II in the
South Pacific. He was in banking for 42 years and served
as president of First State Bank in Rockford until his
retirement in 1975 after which he was chairman of the
grounds committee at Rockford Golf Course until 1990.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church
in Rockford where he served on the church board for many
years. He enjoyed golf and was an avid golfer until age
90. He also served as a member and treasurer of the
Rockford Telephone Company as well as a school board
treasurer for many years. He enjoyed fishing, golfing,
hunting, playing cards (especially Bridge), traveling
and bowling.
Thomas is survived by his wife, Frances Batty of
Charles City; two sons, John T. of Rockford, and Dennis
R. and wife Mari of West Liberty; one brother, Harry
Batty of Venice, Fla.; three grandchildren, Jeffrey
Batty and wife Jennifer of Columbus Junction, Jackie
Gould and husband Rich of Wheaton, Ill. and Jason R.
Batty and wife Amy of Johnston; five great-grandsons
including Javin, Jared and Colin Batty of Columbus
Junction, and Aidan and Damien Gould of Wheaton, Ill.;
two great-granddaughters, Skylar and Brooke Batty of
Johnston.
He was preceded in death by his parents H.C. and
Stella Batty.
