Lila Anderson Lila (Mrs. Earl)
Anderson, 100, a former resident of 902 Clinton St., Charles
City, died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001, at the 11th Street Chautauqua
Guest Home in Charles City. At her request her body was donated
to the anatomy department at the University of Osteopathic
Medicine in Des Moines. Memorial services for Lila Anderson will
be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 5, at the First Wesleyan
Church in Charles City. The Rev. Ted Clark, pastor, will
officiate. The Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City is in charge
of the arrangements.

MARBLE ROCK - Catherine C. Gerhard, 89, of Marble Rock, died
Tuesday, May 1, 2001, at the Salsbury Baptist Home in Charles
City. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 5,
at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Roseville, rural Marble Rock.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Adeline M. (Mrs. Glenn) Jackson, 97, of Sun City, Ariz., and

died March 29, 2001, at the Cook Health Care Center in Sun City.

May 5, in the Chapel of Riverside Cemetery in Charles City.

Doris LaVonne (Mrs. John) Geesman, 67, 2081 Quail Avenue,
Charles City, died Thursday, May 3, 2001, at the St. Mary's
Hospital, Rochester, Minn., of heart complications. A funeral
service for Doris LaVonne Geesman will be held at 10:00 a.m.
Monday, May 7, 2001, at the Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401
Blunt Street, Charles City. Pastor Mark A. Anderson of the Saint
John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Charles City, will officiate.
Burial will be at 2:00 P.M. Monday at the Riverview Cemetery,

Lyle S. Gaston, 91, a resident of 1360 Quail Ave., Floyd,
died Tuesday morning, May 8, 2001, at the Salsbury Baptist Home
in Charles City.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 11,
at the First Baptist Church in Charles City. The Rev. Ruth

MASON CITY - Harold Edwin Doescher, 73, died Wednesday, May
9, 2001 at the Good Shepherd Health Care Center, Mason City.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, May 11, at
the United Methodist Church, Rudd, with the Rev. Richard Pippert
and Rev. Deborah Stowers officiating. A graveside service will
be held at 3 p.m. at Memorial Park Cemetery, Highway 18 W.,
Mason City. The body has been cremated.

ROCKFORD - Donald William Gruis, 78, of 1974 Echo Ave.,
Rockford, died on Monday, May 7, 2001, at the Muse Norris
Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City. Funeral services will be

Lutheran Church, Rockford. Internment will be in Riverside

Caroline Baldwin
NASHUA - Caroline B. Baldwin, 83, of Princeton, Minn.,
formerly of Nashua, died Tuesday, May 8, 2001, at the Elim Home
in Princeton, Minn., of natural causes.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 12,
at the Little Brown Church with burial in Greenwood Cemetery,
both in Nashua.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today, Friday, May 11, at
the Chenoweth and Son Funeral Home in Nashua and one hour prior
to services Saturday at the church.
Living family members include her daughters and son-in-law,
Shirley Conley of Fairchild, Wis., and Verna and Ron Rankin of
Dayton, Minn.; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and
one brother, Michael Scott of West Union.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon in 1998; two
brothers, Little Charles and James W.; and two sisters, Florence
and a sister in infancy.
Memorials may be directed to the family.
Theodore Stewart
Theodore R. Stewart, 82, formerly of Charles City, died
Monday, May 7, 2001, at St. Mary Medical Center in Long Beach,
Calif. Graveside services will be held Monday, May 14, at 10
a.m. in Sunnyside Memory Gardens with Rev. Ted Clark of Wesleyan
Church officiating. Sunnyside Chapel Funeral Home is in charge
of the arrangements.
Ted Stewart was born Aug. 25, 1918, in Charles City to Chris
and Helen Stewart. He graduated from Charles City High School in
1936. He married Marian Lambert on his birthday in 1940. On July
30, 1943, two important events transpired: his first child was
born, a girl, and he received his draft notice. He joined the
Army Air Corps, where he became an instructor of navigation.
After the war was over, Ted returned home and went back to
work at Salsbury Laboratories. He was active in his church, the
Wesleyan Methodist Church of Charles City. His second child, a
son, was born May 24, 1947. Ted was active in the Boy Scouts,
was an Eagle Scout, and received the prestigious Silver Beaver
award. He was a scoutmaster for many years, and took frequent
canoe trips into the wilderness of Canada with the scouts.
Ted began selling insurance for the Preferred Risk Insurance
Company for non-drinkers only. Preferred Risk asked him to move
to California, and open up a new territory for them. In January
of 1956 he headed west with his family and bought a home in
Fullerton, Calif. He found a church home at the Whittier
Wesleyan Methodist Church, and eventually became the treasurer
of the Wesleyan church conference, a position he filled for many
years.
He was very active in the Los Angeles YMCA's volleyball
program. He coached the team for their tryout for the Olympics
in Mexico City, the very first year that volleyball was an
Olympic sport.
He is survived by his wife, Marion; his daughter, Robin
Lakes; his son, Craig Stewart; two grandchildren and one
great-grandchild; a sister, Jung Davis of Apache Jct., Ariz.,
and one brother, Kenneth of Houston, Texas.
DeLeroy F. "De' Connerley
DeLeroy F. "De" Connerley, 73, a resident of 304 15th Ave.,
Charles City, died Wednesday evening, May 9, 2001, at his home.
Funeral services for "De" Connerley will be held at 10:30 a.m.
Saturday, May 12, at the Trinity United Methodist Church in
Charles City. The Rev. Dianne Christopher, senior pastor, will
officiate. There will be a flag presentation by the Charles City
Ceremonial Unit at the church. Interment may occur at a later
date.
Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City
from 3 to 9 p.m. today, Friday, May 11, where the family will
greet friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Visitation will continue
Saturday morning an hour prior to the service at the church.
DeLeroy Fay Connerley was born Jan. 24, 1928, at Dysart, the
son of Fay Edward and Rosilla (Henkel) Connerley. He graduated
from Grundy Center High School and was involved with the U.S.
Army in occupation forces following WWII. On Aug. 7, 1950, he
and Donna M. Ritter were married at Bentonville, Ark. They moved
to Charles City where he was employed by Allied Redi Mix from
1958 to 1988.
He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church and
the American Legion. He was an avid collector of Minnesota
Viking and Iowa Hawkeye memorabilia.
Living family members include his wife, Donna of Charles
City; five sons: Dennis and his wife Donna Connerley and DeWight
and his wife Rachel Connerley, all of Floyd, Doug and his wife
Lynette Connerley of Gotham, Wis., Allen Connerley of Hayfield,
Minn., and Dave and his wife, Mary Connerley of Blacksburg, Va.;
two daughters and their husbands, Sue and Jim Ward of Charles
City and Dawn and Dale Swenson of West concord, Minn.; 21
grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two sisters,
Audrey Springer and Phyllis Connerley, both of Grundy Center.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister.
Memorials may be directed to the family.

NEW HAMPTON - Mary Louise Morgan, 77, of New Hampton and
Charles City, died Monday, May 7, 2001, at the New Hampton
Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, after suffering from
Alzheimer's Disease for seven years. Mary Louise Mann Morgan was
born May 29, 1923, in Chariton, to Harold and Ora Carpenter
Mann. She graduated from Chariton High School. She received a
bachelor's degree from Iowa State College in Applied Arts in
1952 and a master's degree in counseling from the University of

HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE, Ark. - George F. Edwards, 82, of Hot
Springs Village, Ark., died Sunday, May 13, 2001, at St.
Joseph's Regional Medical Center.
The family will welcome visitors on Tuesday, May 15, 2001, at
CedarVale Funeral Chapel in Hot Springs Village, Ark., from 6 to

The life of MariLi HeeYun Pooler, 31, of Brooklyn, N.Y., and
formerly of Charles City and Waverly, will be memorialized in a
graveside service at 3 p.m. Tuesday, June 5, 2001, in the
Riverside Cemetery at Charles City. Friends are asked to meet at
the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City and then proceed to the
cemetery for the service.

Darell Kock
Darell Kock, 60, a resident of 619 8th Ave., Charles City,
went home to be with his Lord on Thursday, May 31, 2001,
following a 17-month battle with a brain tumor.
Funeral services for Darell Kock will be held at 1:30 p.m. on
Saturday, June 2, at the Bethany Alliance Church in Charles
City. The Rev. Jim McDonald, pastor, will officiate. Burial will
be in Riverside Cemetery. There will be a flag presentation by
the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday where the family will greet friends from
5 to 8 p.m. Visitation will continue Saturday morning from 9 to
11 a.m. at the funeral home and at the church one hour prior to
the service.
Darell Duane Kock was born Sept. 18, 1940, at Vilmar, the son
of Ernest and Ruth (Berk) Kock. He received his education at the
Marble Rock Schools and in 1959 was in the first graduating
class from the combined Rudd-Rockford-Marble Rock schools. After
graduation Darell entered the United States Air Force serving in
Biloxi, Miss., the Okinawa Islands, and at Homestead, Fla., for
four years. On March 16, 1963, he married Barbara Neir at
Bethany Alliance Church in Charles City. He worked as an
electrician at White Farm Equipment Company for over 20 years
and at GMT in Waverly as an electrical desinger for 15 years.
Darell was a member of Bethany Alliance Church where he was a
board member and elder. He oversaw many "behind the scenes"
projects at the church.
Darell loved spending time with his grandchildren and they
will always have special memories of their time with Grandpa. He
was so anticipating the arrival of his two newest granddaughters
from Russia. Darell had a special love for children and
especially enjoyed being the Game Director at the Awana Clubs at
the church for the last seven years.
Living family members include his wife, Barbara of Charles
City; two daughters and their husbands, Kathy and Lyle Luppes of
Rosemount, Minn., and Sandy and Ayron Glynn of Eagan, Minn.;
five grandchildren: Amanda, Joshua and Jennifer Luppes, and
Elena and Natalia Glynn; three brothers: Alvin and his wife
Betty Kock of Marble Rock, Darwin and his wife Leola Kock of
Riceville, and Ronald and his wife Terra Kock of Newalla, Okla.;
a sister, Sharon and her husband Dale Laue of Elma; a
sister-in-law, Janette Kock of Greene; a half brother, Dennis
O'Rourke of Hurdland, Mo.; and his mother-in-law, Marie Neir of
Charles City.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter,
Jolene; an infant granddaughter, Danielle Glynn; two sisters:
Eileen Willsher and Evelyn Merriss; a brother, Alfred Kock; and

JoAnn (Mrs. Wayne) Miles, 67, a resident of 806 10th St.,
Charles City, died Tuesday morning, June 5, 2001, at her home.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the
Messiah Lutheran Church in Charles City. The Rev. Curt
Schneider, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the
Sunnyside Memory Gardens south of Charles City.

JoAnn Joyce Miles was born Feb. 26, 1934, in Hamilton County,
Iowa, the daughter of Thomas and Marie (Brown) Peterson. She was
educated in the rural system in Rose Grove #9, Ellsworth
Elementary and graduated from Ellsworth High School in 1951. She
attended Iowa State Teachers College (now UNI) from the fall of
1951 through the fall of 1953.On Jan. 31, 1954, she was united
in marriage to Wayne H. Miles at the Trinity Lutheran Church in
Ellsworth. While living there, she was a telephone operator and
bookkeeper for the telephone company, president of the PTA,
president of the Deb-Hart Club, a Sunday School teacher and was
active in scouting. She was president of the American Legion
Auxiliary unit (Ellsworth), county (Hamilton) and 8th District
(14 counties in north central Iowa).
On Dec. 1, 1970, the family moved to Charles City to what
would later be 1819 Timber Ave. to raise turkeys. JoAnn became
involved in many activities: Sunday School teacher, president of
Charles City Woman's Club, president of Double Dozen Club and a
member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.
She was very active in the Floyd County Democratic Party,
serving as chair from 1976 to 1982. She continued her work in
the American Legion Auxiliary serving as unit (Charles City),
county (Floyd) and 4th District (12 counties in northeast Iowa)
President. After serving in many Department (State of Iowa)
appointments, JoAnn was elected Department President for the
1997-98 year. She was a life member of the Floyd County
Historical Society and was an avid basketball fan, especially
the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Boston Celtics.
Living family members include her husband, Wayne of Charles
City; their three children and their families: Joyce and Tom
Hopfensperger and son Allan of Cedar Rapids, David Miles and
Loree of Des Moines, and John Miles and Linda, daughter Ahafia,
and son Kestrel of Kansas City, Mo.; three stepgrandsons; one
stepgranddaughter; a brother, Clifford Peterson of Des Moines;
and a sister, Darlene Levey of Des Moines/Kihea, Maui, Hawaii;
and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers,
Norman and David Lee; and one sister, Thora.
Memorials may be directed to the Hospice of North Iowa,
Charles City site; the Messiah Lutheran Church; or the Past

Donna Fenzloff
Donna (Mrs. Albert) Fenzloff, 62, a resident of 2797 290th
St., Greene, died Wednesday afternoon, June 6, 2001, at the
Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Monday at the Hauser
Funeral Home in Charles City. The Rev. Rick Magstadt, pastor of
the Christian Missionary Alliance Church in Osage, will
officiate. Burial will be in the Sunnyside Memory Gardens, south
of Charles City.
Visitation will continue Monday morning from 9 a.m. until
service time.
Donna Mae Matthews Fenzloff was born June 17, 1938, at
Glencoe, Minn., the daughter of Harold C. and Elvira O.B.
(Grenke) Matthews. She attended Lutheran School in Glencoe and
graduated from Charles City High School in 1956. She was a
bookkeeper at the J.C. Penny Store in Austin, Minn., from
1956-57 and was a wool presser at the Paris Cleaners in Charles
City from 1957-58. On March 7, 1958, she and Albert F. Fenzloff
were married in the Little Brown Church at Nashua. She was a
wool presser at the New Brighton Cleaners in New Brighton,
Minn., from 1967-74, worked at Sherman Nursery Greenhouse in
Charles City from 1976-77 and worked at the Charles City
Laundromat from 1991-2000. She liked various crafts, sewing and
knitting, and enjoyed gardening when she was able, and collected
chickens.
Living family members include her husband, Albert, of rural
Greene; two sons, Jeffrey of Elma and Scott and his wife, Susan
Fenzloff of Cedar Falls; a brother, Allan, and wife, Cindy
Rubendall, of Gibbon, Minn.; and two sisters, Debra (Mrs Mike)
Briese of Jordan, Minn. and Linda (Mrs. Steve) Martin of Gibbon.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Dale Boyer
Dale Boyer, 91, a resident of 905 Freeman St., Charles City,
died Friday, June 8, 2001, at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest
Home.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the
Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. The Rev. Mark Anderson,
pastor of the St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, will
officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery at Charles City.
Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 3-9 p.m.
Monday where the family will greet friends from 6:30-8 p.m.
Visitation will continue on Tuesday from 9 a.m. until service
time.
Dale Leland Boyer, the son of Samuel and Mildred (Rice)
Boyer, was born May 15, 1910, in Floyd County. He attended
country school and Charles City High School. On May 14, 1930, he
was united in marriage to Pearl Goodale at Charles City. He
farmed until 1942, then moved to Colwell where he owned and
operated the blacksmith shop. Dale then worked at the Colwell
school as a custodian and bus driver for 12 years. They moved to
Orlando, Fla., in 1961 where he serviced televisions, then they
moved to Charles City the following year at which time Dale
worked for Goodyear and later at Sears servicing television sets
along with other small appliances. After retiring in 1973 he
continued to repair sewing machines, lawn mowers, small
appliances, etc., for many years.
Dale loved to fly, taking lessons in earlier years and
receiving his pilot's license. He also enjoyed fishing in
northern Minnesota and Canada. At the time of the Charles City
tornado, which was also his birthday, he was all packed and
ready to leave for Canada.
Living family members include his wife, Pearl, of Charles
City; two daughters, Delores Haberkorn of Charles City and
Janice Groesbeck and her husband, Darwin, of Riverside, Calif;
three grandchildren, Craig Haberkorn and his wife, Cindy, of
Charles City, Angela Andreas and Shauna von Hanstein and her
husband, Phillipp, all of Madison, Ga.; six great-grandchildren,
Damon, Travis and Dustin Haberkorn, Angela Parsons, and Lindsey
and Brandy Andreas; a great-great-grandson, Dylan Parsons; and a
brother, Lyle Boyer, of Charles City.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Darlene
Boyer, in July 1946; a son-in-law, Kenwood Haberkorn, in June
2000; and a sister-in-law, Arlene Boyer, in February 2001.

MINNEAPOLIS - Roger A. Finch, 82, of Robinsdale, Minn.,
formerly of Charles City, died Friday June 8, 2001 at the North
Memorial Hospital, Minneapolis, Minn.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday June 12,
2001 at Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles
City. Officiating will be Pastor Dianne Christopher of Trinity
United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in Evergreen
Cemetery, Rudd. Military rites will be conducted by the Charles
City Ceremonial Unit. Visitation will be held from 4 until 8
p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Roger Finch was born August 3, 1918 the son of Archie and
Ethel (Hinman) Finch in Nora Springs. He grew up in the Rudd
area and later graduated from the Rudd High School. On May 31,
1941 Roger was united in marriage to Florence "Betty" E. Pace in
Faribault, Minn. Shortly after there marriage Roger was drafted
into the United States Army. He entered into active duty on
October 22, 1942. During his tour of duty Roger fought in two
major battles which included Normandy in Northern France and
Ardennes in West Germany. He was wounded in battle both times
for which he earned the following decorations and citations: a
Purple Heart with an Oak Leaf Cluster, World War II Victory
Medal, ETO Campaign Ribbon with 4 bronze stars, ADSM Ribbon, ATC
Ribbon, and a Combat Infantry Badge. Upon his completion of duty
Roger had earned the rank of Captain in the 330th Infantry 83rd
Division.
When Roger returned from serving his country he went to work
at Oliver-White Farm where he remained until his retirement.
After retiring Roger was asked to become the president of
Rockford Brick and Tile. He later helped close the facility and
went back to White Farm as plant manager. Roger was also
involved in the educational system in Charles City as he served
as president of the school board for several years. He was the
finance manager at the Methodist church and was very involved in
raising money for the educational wing that was later destroyed
by the tornado.
Roger loved the water, whether he was fishing or just
enjoying its movement. He was an avid golfer and a former semi
pro baseball player. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in
Charles City, Shriners in Hayward, and the American Legion.
Roger was also a member of the Hayward United Methodist Church,
Hayward, Wisc.
Those thankful for having shared in Rogers life include his
wife of 60 years Betty of Robinsdale, Minn; five children, Patty
Finch Guthrie and her husband William of Minneapolis, Penny
Moyers of Indianapolis, Ind., Robert (Bob) Finch and his wife
Sherry of Centerville, Ohio, Ron Finch and his wife Jennie of
Atlanta, Ga., Richard Finch and his wife Ann of Coon Rapids,
Minn; one sister Eunice Frevert and her husband Merrill of West
Union; two brothers, John Finch and his wife Bernadine of
Orville, Calif. and Randall Finch and his wife Laurel of
Bullhead City, Ariz.,; 12 grandchildren, Kristin, Jenny, Mike,
Ryan, Susan, Eric, Patrick, Nathaniel, Shelly, Jermaine, Lauren
and Marie; two great granddaughters, Megan and Amirah; and many
nieces and nephews.
Mr. Finch was preceded in death by his parents, one sister
Madeline and two brothers, Harold, and Melvin "Mully."

NASHUA - Verna Mae Bast, 75, of Nashua, died Friday, June 8,
2001, at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.
Services will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. John Lutheran
Church in Nashua. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens,
rural Charles City.

Irvineus Myren
NASHUA - Irvineus S. Myren, 87, of Nashua, died Thursday,
June 7, 2001, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital.
Services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Little Brown
Church in Nashua. Committal services will be conducted at the
Tipton Masonic Cemetery in Tipton.

died Friday, June 8, 2001, at the Liebe Care Center in Greene.
A funeral Mass will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's

City, IA, and formerly of Charles City, Clinton, and Des Moines,
IA, died Monday, June 11, 2001, from heart complications.

Friday, June 15, at the First Congregational United Church of

WATERLOO - Elvera Emma (Griner) Henning, 83, of Clarksville,
died Wednesday, June 13, 2001, at the Country View Care
Facility, Waterloo.
A funeral service will be held beginning at 1:30 p.m. today
at Schwartz Funeral Home, Clarksville. Interment will be in
Lynwood Cemetery, Clarksville.
Elihue Link IONIA - Elihue Harold "Beek" Link, 74, of Ionia,
passed away Friday morning, June 15, 2001, at North Iowa Mercy
Health Center in Mason City of natural causes.
Services will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 19, at St.
John Evangelical Church, with burial in Riverside Cemetery, both
in Charles City. Visitation will be Monday from 4-8 p.m. at the
Chenoweth & Son Funeral Home in Nashua and one hour prior to
services at the church on Tuesday. Memorials may be directed to
the family or to the charity of your choice.
He was born in Chickasaw County on Jan. 29, 1927, the son of
Elihu and Agnes (Jordan) Link. He attended Chickasaw country
schools and graduated from Charles City High School in 1945. He
served with the U.S. Army during World War II and received the
Army of Occupation, Good Conduct and W.W. II Victory medals.
He was united in marriage to Leona Florence Koeneke on Jan.
18, 1948, in Charles City. To this union five children were
born. Leona passed away April 20, 1979. Beek was married to
Leona Rowley on Sept. 18, 1982. She passed away in April 1990.
Glenda Hildebrand and "Beek" were united in marriage on July 13,
1992, in Charles City.
"Beek" worked at the Charles City Livestock Exchange and was
a self-employed cattle buyer and farmer. He was a member of
Trinity United Methodist Church and an associate member of
Messiah Lutheran Church. He also was a member of the Loyal Order
of Moose.
"Beek" is survived by his wife, Glenda; two sons and their
spouses, E. Michael and Dee Link of Ionia and Greg and Edie Link
of Sherman Oaks, Calif.; three daughters and their spouses,
Linda and Normand Klemesrud of Charles City, Debbie and Mike
Hayman of Bettendorf and Cindy Maag of LeClaire; seven
stepchildren, Gloria Palmer of Mason City, Joanne Boyd of
Loveland, Terri Allen of Cedar Falls, Karen Hagarty of Waterloo,
Richard Tibbits of Charles City, Joyce Boehmer of Charles City
and David Tibbits of Nashua; one brother, Louis Link of Iona;
seven grandchildren, Nathaniel Klemesrud, Jason Klemesrud, Kari
Prigge, Trevin Hayman, Alissa Maag, Courtney Maag and Ashley
Maag; two great-grandchildren, Tyler and Madison; and 15
step-grandchildren and 10 step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wives, Leona (Koeneke) Link
and Leona (Rowley) Link; his parents, Elihu and Agnes (Jordan)
Link; one sister, Nellie Crooks; and one great-grandson, Parker
Prigge.
Merrill Johnson
MASON CITY - Merrill L. Johnson, 81, a resident of 1170
Highway 218, Floyd, died Sunday morning, June 17, 2001, at the
North Iowa Mercy Health Center, East Campus, in Mason City.
Services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 20, at the
Grace United Methodist Church of Floyd. The Rev. Solomon Odoom,
pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the Oakwood Cemetery
at Floyd.
Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City
from 3-9 p.m. Tuesday where the family will greet friends from
6-8 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church Wednesday one
hour prior to the service.
Merrill Leland Johnson was born May 17, 1920, in Floyd
County, the son of Ben H. and Anna (Lesch) Johnson. He attended
rural schools and graduated from Floyd Consolidated High School
in 1938. He farmed with his parents and on Dec. 28, 1948, he and
Charline Rucker were married in Floyd County. They farmed near
Grafton for three years before moving to their farm north of
Floyd.
He was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Floyd
and the Floyd County Farm Bureau.
Living family members include his wife, Charlene, of rural
Floyd; a son, Maurice and his wife, Pam Johnson, of rural Floyd;
and two grandsons, Ben and Andy Johnson.
Memorials may be directed to the Grace United Methodist
Church elevator fund.
Leonard Klink Marble Rock - Leonard Klink, 84, of 1450 290th
St., Marble Rock, died Saturday, June 16, 2001, at the Ninth
Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.
Services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist
Church in Rockford. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery,
also in Rockford.

Wilma Ewald
A graveside service for Wilma Ewald, 88, a former Charles
City resident who died March 5, 2001, will be held at 3:30 p.m.
Saturday at Calvary Cemetery, Charles City. Friends and family
are invited to gather at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church's
Social Hall immediately following the service.
Jennie Henry
Jennie P. (Mrs. Ray) Henry, 90, 602 Eleventh Street, Charles
City, and formerly of 108 Park Ave., Charles City and 1250
Rampart Avenue, rural Floyd, died Monday, June 18, 2001, at the
Eleventh Street Chautauqua Guest Home, Charles City, following
an extended illness.
A funeral service for Jennie Henry will be held at 10:30 a.m.
Thursday, June 21, at the St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church,
Main and Gilbert streets, Charles City. The Reverend Dennis D.
Niezwaag will officiate. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery,
Charles City.
Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Fullerton
Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City. Visitation will
continue one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.
Mrs. Henry, the former Jennie Pearl Slinger, was born Feb. 9,
1911, in Riverton Township, rural Charles City, and the daughter
of Fred and Marie (Schneider) Slinger. She attended country
school and graduated from Charles City Community High School in
1928. Jennie then received her normal training to teach school.
She taught in rural schools prior to her marriage.
On Jan. 1, 1939, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church
Rectory, she was united in marriage to Ray L. Henry. For 54
years, the couple made their home in rural Floyd, where Jennie
was busy in all the activities of being a wife, mother and
homemaker. It was there that Jennie developed a fond love for
raising flowers, produce in her garden, chickens and sheep. Mrs.
Henry was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, the
Royal Neighbors, the Charles City Women's Club, the neighborhood
Birthday Club and the FCNB Heritage Club.
Those thankful for sharing Jennie's life are her husband of
over 60 years, Ray of Charles City; her two children and their
spouses, Elaine and Bill Springenburg of Charles City, and
Delwyn and Lois Henry of Floyd; a sister, Mrs. Bernice Hobert of
Charles City and a brother, Glenn Slinger of Charles City; five
grandchildren, Randall Knutson and his wife Michele, Curt
Knutson, Robert Henry and his wife Jill, Jana Henry and Grant
Henry; and seven great-grandchildren.
Her parents and two sisters and brothers-in-law, Dorothy and
Oscar Gabel, Grace Slinger, and Melvin Hobert, precede her in
death.

DES MOINES - Roberta J. Brewer, 84, of Des Moines, formerly
of Tripoli, died June 14, 2001, at Heather Manor in Des Moines.
Funeral services were held Monday, June 18, at Rettig Funeral
Chapel in Tripoli. Burial was in the Fremont Cemetery, rural
Tripoli.
