Donald J. Waldron

Donald J. Waldron of Winter Park, Colo. passed away July 13, 2010 at his home.  A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 14, at the Church of Eternal Hills in Tabernash, Colo.

Don was born on Oct. 25, 1932 in West Union, Iowa to George and Dorothy Waldron.  He spent most of his childhood years in Sioux City, Iowa and Omaha, Neb. During high school he moved back to West Union and played basketball and baseball receiving full scholarships in both to the University of Iowa. During the summer months of college Don played for a semi – pro baseball team in Mason City, Iowa called the Legionnaires.  While playing for the Legionnaires, Don and his teammates would go to Witkes Café where he met his future wife, Janice.  Janice worked as a waitress and complained to Don about the team being horrible tippers.  Don and Jan dated while both were students at the University of Iowa. They were married on Dec. 28, 1954 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Ventura, Iowa. During Don’s senior year of college he was drafted by the Los Angeles (Brooklyn) Dodgers, “but” as he often said, “Uncle Sam had other plans for me in the United States Air Force.”  He graduated from the University of Iowa with a bachelors degree in marketing.   He was then sent to Texas, where he began training for the United States Air Force.  Texas was where Don and Jan’s first son, Scott, was born.

In 1957, the Air Force asked Don to travel to Lyon, France to be a navigator pilot with the Black Birds and play baseball for the Lyon Rangers.  The Lyon Rangers baseball team won the 1958 European Baseball Championships. During Don’s tour in Lyon, three more sons were born, Craig, Todd and Brian.

The family moved back to Clear Lake where Don worked at the Mason City Hatchery, owned by Jan’s parents. They began to travel out to Colorado to ski and decided it would be a good place to establish the Don Waldron family roots.  The Waldrons were in the market to buy a ski lodge and heard the Timber House Ski Lodge in Winter Park was for sale. After skiing one day, Don and Jan skied down the Billy Wood’s Trail to the Timber House and tried to negotiate a sale with Paul and Elsa Timmerhaus. The Timmerhaus’ told Don and Jan that they were going to Germany for a few months and would give them an answer when they got home.  One afternoon, while in Iowa, the Timmerhaus’ knocked on Don and Jan’s door, in Iowa, and offered them the opportunity to purchase the Timberhouse Ski Lodge.  Ten days later, Don, Jan and their four sons moved to Winter Park.  For over 35 years (prior to semi-retirement), Don and Jan fulfilled their dreams of operating a successful, family-style ski lodge.  In 2003, the town recognized the Waldron’s hard work and named the drive to the lodge “Timber House Road.”  The Timberhouse Ski Lodge continues to be operated by the Waldron Family.  After their move to Colorado, Don, Jan and their sons, frequently ed to Clear Lake during the summer months.

Over the years, Don served as a Board Member for the Winter Park Water and Sanitation District. He was instrumental in developing the Winter Park Information Bureau.  Don was an avid golfer at Pole Creek and Grand Lake, Colo. He enjoyed skiing at Winter Park Resort and playing tennis during their annual trips to Hawaii. Don was a mentor, teacher and symbol of strength to his sons, their spouses and his grandchildren.  He kept a golf club, baseball bat and baseball glove close by, just in case his grandchildren wanted to play.   In 2000, Don was recognized in Fayette County, Iowa on the “All Century Team” being named one of the Top 100 Best Athletes from 1900 to 2000.

Don may have been known throughout Grand County as a grumpy old man, always giving his opinion and telling you how it was; but those who knew Don well, knew him as a very kind, loving, and softhearted man who would do anything for his family and friends.

Don will be deeply missed by his wife of 55 years, Janice, of Winter Park; his sons, Scott (Dorinda), of Winter Park, Todd (Sherri) and Brian (Rita) of Ventura, along with his seven grandchildren, Carrie, Sarah, Anthony (Danielle), Kevin, Jessica, Janice and Dane, and one step-great-grandson, Jacob.  Also, his sister-in-law, Delores (Earl) Kotz, Clear Lake, many nieces and nephews.

Don is preceded in death by a son, Craig (2003) and brother, Richard.

The family would like to thank everyone for their thoughts, prayers and support during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Heart of the Mountains Hospice, PO Box 130 Hot Sulphur Springs, CO 80451.
