March 6, 2010
Terry Harrison, archivist for the Mason City Public Library,
presented a PowerPoint program a few interesting events in Mason
City's history from the building of two settlements to combining
them to become Masonville and later Mason City. Forward from
that were murders, political arguments, scandals, street fairs.
He recommended reading historical newspapers for insights into
daily life in Mason City in the late 1800's right down to a
graphic description of the embalming process.

The February 6th program
was presented by Jerry Krieger. The three
parts of his presentation included the history of how
Germans (all from one village in Germany) came to
populate a village called Norka in Russia, their
emigration to the United States and the reasons for it
(mostly in Nebraska, Kansas, Oregon, etc.), and those
German immigrants in Cerro Gordo County, Iowa. |
